Mia Mottley honored at TIME Earth Awards for global climate leadership

Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley, long recognized as one of the most forceful voices for climate justice on the global stage, has once again earned international acclaim — this time at the 2025 TIME Earth Awards in New York City

At the ceremony on April 23, Mottley was celebrated for her unwavering commitment to fighting the climate crisis, particularly on behalf of small island developing states like her own Speaking before an audience that included world leaders, business executives, and climate advocates, Mottley invoked the late Pope Francis’ call for inclusive action, reminding everyone that “the environmental challenge concerns and affects us all ”

For Mottley, the honor from TIME is another milestone in a career built on firsts and fearless advocacy She became Barbados’ first female Prime Minister in 2018, but her political career stretches back much further Elected to Parliament in 1994 at just 29 years old, Mottley quickly rose through the ranks, serving as Attorney General, Minister of Education, and Minister of Economic Affairs before ultimately leading the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to a historic landslide victory

Her leadership style — direct, passionate, and deeply grounded in fairness — caught the world’s attention in recent years, particularly after her fiery speeches at international summits like the United Nations General Assembly and the COP26 Climate Conference in Glasgow At a time when many leaders spoke cautiously about climate change, Mottley called out global inequalities head-on, demanding greater action and financing for countries on the frontlines of the crisis

“The truth is that if we look back at history, we know that history doesn’t move in a straight line, but it is important that we keep the trajectory and the direction moving in the right way. There are people whose very existence depends on us finding ways of building bridges through this difficult and challenging time” – Mottley

Under her leadership, Barbados has committed to transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2030 — an ambitious target for any nation, but especially for a small island dependent on imports Beyond energy, Mottley has been a leading voice in reimagining global finance to better serve

the world’s most influential people in 2022, praised for reshaping not just her country’s future, but influencing the global conversation on climate justice

At the Earth Awards, Mottley didn’t mince words about the risks of complacency She warned that without urgent and coordinated investment, fundamental human rights — access to food, water, security — would be increasingly threatened worldwide She also pushed back against what she called “backsliding” from corporations and financial institutions on climate finance pledges

vulnerable nations Her 2021 Bridgetown Initiative proposed reforms to international financial systems that would give developing countries better access to funding for climate resilience and sustainable growth

This isn’t Mottley’s first recognition by TIME She was named to the TIME 100 list of

“The truth is that history doesn’t move in a straight line,” Mottley told the audience “But it is important that we keep the trajectory and the direction moving in the right way There are people whose very existence depends on us ” The 2025 TIME E a r t h A w a r d s , presented by Official Timepiece Rolex and Galvanize Climate Solutions, recognized leaders like Mia Mottley who are pushing the planet forward — even when the road ahead is daunting

Dominica Senator Delbert Paris resigns as

UWP deputy leader

In a surprise political development, Senator Delbert Paris has stepped down as deputy political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Dominica’s main opposition party UWP political leader Dr Thomson Fontaine confirmed Paris’ resignation to Dominica News Online (DNO) on Monday No formal reason was disclosed

Paris’ sudden exit comes amid growing tensions within the p a r t y , e s p e c i a l l y following his controversial vote in support of the Electoral Commission Act during a parliamentary session on March 19, 2025 The UWP, which is part of the

Reform Coalition (ERC), had been actively protesting the legislation, arguing it lacked adequate public consultation and transparency Paris’ decision to side with the government on the bill drew sharp criticism from within his own ranks

A civil engineer by profession, Paris was nominated to the Senate by independent MP Anthony Charles, who won the Marigot seat in the 2022 general election He joined the UWP leadership in December 2024 after losing a bid for the party’s top position to Dr Fontaine Despite that loss, he was elected deputy leader, defeating incumbent Ronald Charles

His resignation effective immediately comes just four months into his tenure and has ignited debate both within the party and among political observers Some see it as a reflection of deeper divisions within the UWP, which has been trying to regroup and present a united front ahead of future elections

With Paris’ departure, the party is now left to manage internal fallout and consider a new deputy leader, even as it maintains its role as the primary political counterweight to the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP)

Caribbean faces critical health worker shortage, PAHO warns

The Caribbean is among the regions most affected by a widening shortage of health workers, according to a new report from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)

The report, The Health Workforce in the Americas: Regional Data and Indicators, reveals that 14 out of 39 countries in the Americas including several in the Caribbean do not meet the World Health Organization’s (WHO) minimum threshold of 44 5 health professionals per 10,000 people

Haiti, with only 6 38 health workers per 10,000 population, is at the bottom of the regional scale Jamaica, Belize, St Lucia, Dominican Republic, and St Kitts and Nevis also fall below the WHO benchmark of 44 5 These figures reflect deep structural inequalities that, if left unaddressed, could severely compromise access to essential health services

“The health workforce is the backbone of our health care systems; without health care workers, it is simply not possible to speak of universal access or universal coverage, ” said PAHO Director Dr Jarbas Barbosa The Americas, he added, face a projected shortfall of between 600,000 and 2 million health workers by 2030

While the regional average stands at 6 6 5 7 h e a l t h w o r k e r s p e r 10,000 comfortably above the WHO target Caribbean nations tell a more troubling story In contrast to Haiti and others struggling to meet the standard, Cuba emerges as a leader, with one of the highest densities in the entire hemisphere over 160 health workers per 10,000 people

PAHO attributes these disparities to a combination of factors: limited training capacity, an aging workforce, and especially migration, which continues to drain the Caribbean of qualified professionals The report also

Number of Health Workers per 10,000 inhabitants

highlights the unequal distribution of workers within countries, which often leaves rural or marginalized communities underserved

Midwifery, for instance, shows a relatively strong presence in Englishspeaking Caribbean nations like Antigua and Barbuda, but remains underdeveloped elsewhere in the region Data on community health workers, key to delivering care in low-resource settings, is available in only a handful of Caribbean countries And while nurses who make up the majority of the region’s health workforce—are predominantly female, many Caribbean nations report nurse-to-population ratios far below the regional norm

The family of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge, whose body was found last Thursday in a pool at the Double Day Hotel in Tuschen, Guyana, is calling for an independent international investigation, following an autopsy that determined her cause of death was drowning

At a virtual press briefing on Monday, attorney Darren Wade, who represents the Younge family, confirmed that a team of pathologists found no signs of inflicted injuries or broken bones “Based on the findings, they determined that she died by drowning,” Wade stated “The pathologists conducted a meticulous and comprehensive examination going beyond the standard procedures ”

The forensic autopsy was carried out by a trio of international experts: Dr Glenn A Rudner from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, government-appointed Barbadian pathologist Dr Shubhakar Karra Paul, and Dr Gary L Collins, Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Delaware, selected by the family Family physician Dr Caleb McCloggan also witnessed the fourhour procedure

To address the looming crisis, PAHO is calling for targeted investment in training programs, better working conditions, and strategies to retain talent, particularly in underserved areas The organization also recommends strengthening health workforce data systems to guide evidence-based policymaking

“The challenge is not just to have more health professionals,” Dr Barbosa concluded, “but to ensure that they are where they are most needed and that they have the right skills to meet the demands of the population ” 6.38 34.5 36 38.5 48.5

PM Holness: Jamaica on track for under 1,000 murders in 2025

Jamaica is on track to record fewer than 1,000 murders in a calendar year for the first time since 2003, according to Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Speaking at the opening of Jamaica Packaging Industries Limited’s new $2 billion facility in Kingston on Tuesday, Holness said the country’s declining murder rate signals a turning point in the fight against crime

“We will go below 1,000 murders [for] the first time in almost 30 years,” the prime minister declared, noting that the milestone would demonstrate to both local and international stakeholders that Jamaica is serious about becoming a safe destination for tourism and investment

increase, rising 23 8% from 290 to 359 reported cases

Overall, major crimes have decreased by 18 2% nationally, with 1,120 reported incidents so far this year, compared to 1,370 during the same period last year. Several parishes—most notably Westmoreland, St James, and Hanover have seen sharp reductions in violent crime However, areas like St Andrew South and St Catherine South continue to struggle, with little to no improvement and slight upticks in some categories

The last time Jamaica recorded under 1,000 murders was in 2003, when police data showed 976 killings Now, based on current trends, the country appears poised to repeat or even improve on that statistic Between January 1 and April 26 this year, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) recorded 225 murders a 36 6% drop from the 355 homicides reported during the same period in 2024 That translates to 130 fewer murders

The national drop in murders reflects a broader decline in major crimes across the island. Shootings have fallen by 30 7%, from 352 to 244 incidents. Injuries from violent crimes are also down by 42 9% Rape cases have seen the steepest decline, falling nearly in half from 148 to 78 a 47 3% decrease Robberies dipped slightly by 4 9%, while break-ins were the only major crime category to

Still, the general trend paints a picture of a country moving in the right direction Holness framed the progress as part of a broader national effort to boost investor confidence and improve quality of life

“This is not just a statistic,” he said “It’s a message to the world that Jamaica is committed to creating a secure and prosperous future ”

Despite the findings, Adriana’s father, Subrian Younge, expressed frustration. “They say is drowning and to me that is no result,” he said The family remains unconvinced by the conclusions, especially given visible dark marks on the girl’s body, which pathologists attributed to post-mortem water damage and early decomposition

Wade emphasized that the pathologists could not determine the specific location where Adriana drowned and noted that expected drowning indicators like the presence of cotton wool in the airways were not observed

In the wake of the autopsy results, protests erupted nationwide, some devolving into looting, arson, and destruction of public infrastructure. In response, President Dr Irfaan Ali urged citizens to remain within the law while expressing their grief and outrage “If persons breach the law, there must be consequences and there will be consequences,” Ali warned during a Monday night press conference

The president acknowledged the right to peaceful protest but condemned what he described as politically motivated hijacking of the demonstrations “That is unfortunate,” Ali said “You will be prosecuted Stop now ” Meanwhile, the Younge family is pressing for outside intervention “I believe it is critical that the state acts,” Wade said, calling on President Ali to make good on his promise to the family The attorney said they hope either the FBI or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will be brought in to conduct a full, impartial investigation

Haiti repatriates of 720 nationals from the Dominican Republic

Haiti launched a voluntary repatriation operation for 720 of its nationals after Dominican authorities demolished homes in the Haitian settlement known as Mata Mosquito or “Pequeño Haiti” near Higüey, the capital city of the eastern La Altagracia Province

The affected Haitians, many of whom had been hiding in rugged terrain and ravines to avoid immigration raids, boarded buses for their return journey to Haiti The operation was overseen by the Haitian Consul in Higüey, Wenceslas Lambert, who coordinated the logistics until the nine buses rolled out along Boulevard de l’Est towards the official border crossings at Dajabón, Comendador, and Pedernales

The repatriation effort was supported by the Zilé Foundation, through former Haitian ambassador Edwin Paraison, and by Dr Joseph Chérubin and his team from the Social M o v e m e n t f o r S o c i o c u l t u r a l a n d Environmental Work (Mostha)

Nearly 300 agents from the Dominican

Republic’s Directorate General of Migration (DGM) were deployed to “facilitate” the departure, with a DGM unit leading the convoy

The operation comes amid rising tensions in the Dominican Republic over the presence of undocumented Haitians On Sunday, demonstrators gathered near the presidential

palace in Santo Domingo, backing President Luis Abinader’s hardline immigration policies Protesters waved signs reading “Expel them already,” “The Dominican Republic is for Dominicans,” and “We’re fed up ” Since taking office in 2020, President Abinader has tightened immigration controls, particularly targeting Haitian nationals Earlier this month, he introduced a controversial new protocol requiring hospitals to request identification documents, proof of residence, and payment from foreigners seeking medical care

The clampdown has already seen results: last Monday, Dominican authorities reported the arrest of 87 women and 48 children in hospitals and maternity wards across the country — with more than half being pregnant women or new mothers

As the situation between the two nations remains tense, Haiti’s move to organize voluntary repatriations highlights the deepening humanitarian and political challenges along the Hispaniola border

UN applauds Haiti’s push for greater female representation in elections

UN Women is hailing recent progress in Haiti’s electoral process, emphasizing that the meaningful participation of women is essential for strengthening democracy in the country The organization called the recruitment of women to communal (OECs) and departmental electoral offices (OEDs) “ a step forward” in the push for greater inclusion and equality in Haitian elections

In a statement, UN Women praised the resilience and commitment of Haitian women, noting their vital role in advancing democracy and human rights even while facing persistent barriers like gender-based violence, which often limits their public engagement “Their participation ensures inclusive and

representative electoral governance, guaranteeing the country’s democratic legitimacy,” the agency said

According to UN Women, data from the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) shows encouraging signs: some departments are surpassing a 30 percent threshold for women ’ s participation in electoral management roles

The South department recorded 38 1 percent female participation, followed by Les Nippes with 33 33 percent, and the Centre with 32 5 percent Notably, nine women were appointed to lead offices in the South, and two women in Ouest 1

While these gains are significant, UN Women noted that progress is uneven across

the country In the Ouest 1 department and Artibonite, women ’ s representation hovers around 27 percent still below the minimum quota of 30 percent Several municipalities, particularly in areas like Lascahobas, Ducis, and parts of the North-East and West, reported no female candidates at all

The situation in more insecure areas like Cité Soleil, Petit Goâve, and Cap Haïtien is especially troubling UN Women suggested that high levels of violence could be a contributing factor to the low participation rates in those regions

Highlighting the ongoing disparities, UN Women urged Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council and government to intensify efforts to

meet the 30 percent quota across all levels of governance, including candidate nominations

The agency stressed that real progress will require institutional reforms, incentives to boost women ’ s involvement, and national awareness campaigns to tackle systemic, cultural, and political barriers

UN Women reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Haitian women ’ s political engagement and pledged continued collaboration with national and international partners

“Women’s full participation in public affairs management is a fundamental pillar for the consolidation of democracy and sustainable development in Haiti,” the group said

April 29 marked the end of the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s second term a milestone that has become a traditional measuring stick for new administrations While some question the relevance of focusing so early in a 1,461-day presidency, the first 100 days remain a useful barometer for assessing a president’s initial approach to governance, especially in times of change or crisis

The significance of this early phase traces back to Franklin D Roosevelt, who took office in 1933 during the depths of the Great Depression With banks collapsing, unemployment soaring, and public morale in freefall, FDR moved swiftly to stabilize the

country In those first 100 days, he pushed through 15 major pieces of legislation under the New Deal That burst of action not only addressed the immediate crisis but also set a tone for bold, activist government Ever since, historians and political analysts have looked to the 100-day mark as an early indicator of a president’s momentum and priorities

The idea is that newly elected presidents—especially those entering with a mandate have a brief window of heightened political capital Congress may be more cooperative, and the public more optimistic

The first 100 days often become a testing ground for how efficiently a president can translate campaign promises into policy,

manage public expectations, and define the tone of the administration Across modern history, that window has produced mixed results John F Kennedy earned an 81% approval rating after his first 100 days despite early foreign policy challenges, including the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba His charm, poise, and launch of the Peace Corps helped him maintain public support Ronald Reagan, who survived an assassination attempt just 69 days into office, won praise for his economic focus and strong leadership style, finishing his first 100 days with a 73% approval rating Barack Obama also faced a turbulent

beginning taking office during the 2008 financial crisis His $787 billion stimulus package and steps toward health care reform earned him a 65% approval rating Other presidents like George W Bush (62%) and Lyndon Johnson (75%) also started strong, though their long-term legacies were shaped by later decisions and unforeseen crises

Still, a strong start doesn’t guarantee smooth sailing Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and George H W Bush all posted solid early numbers but struggled to maintain support Gerald Ford, who had an approval rating of 48% after his first 100 days, failed to win election in his own right Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s 41% rating after his first 100 days in 2017 didn’t prevent him from mounting a successful comeback in 2024

That raises an important point: while the first 100 days can offer insight into a president’s readiness and strategic direction, they are not a crystal ball A presidency is a marathon, not a sprint Unanticipated events from economic shifts to international conflicts can redefine any administration The 100-day milestone is often less about accomplishment and more about perception, a snapshot of how a leader is handling the opening chapter of their term In the end, the continued attention to this tradition reflects a broader truth: Americans want to know early on whether their vote was well placed The first 100 days won’t make or break a presidency, but they do give the public and history a first impression that’s hard to shake

Medical Cannabis Offers

Relief from MS Symptoms

While traveling some years ago, Natasha Acoff experienced a pronounced numbness on the left side of her body that led her to seek emergency medical care After undergoing an initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and receiving a preliminary diagnosis, Ms Acoff left the ER with an informational pamphlet on multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease she knew little about

“I went back to my hotel, and I started reading it, and I mean, I boo-hoo cried I boohoo cried because I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I'm about to die!’ " she recalls Her stark conclusion was understandable MS is a chronic, autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, causing symptoms such as blurred vision, balance and coordination problems, cognitive impairments, muscle weakness, bowel and bladder issues, fatigue, and numbness and tingling Its cause is unknown, although some research points to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection as a leading candidate. While a diagnosis is typically delivered between the ages of 20 and 40, people of all ages can be affected Women are also more likely to receive an MS diagnosis than men

Since that traumatic day, Ms Acoff has devoted herself to raising awareness of MS and helping people afflicted with this invisible disease She is an ambassador, self-help group leader, community engagement council chair, and district activist leader for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and an active MS Walk Champion She is also the founder and president of On My Nerves Inc , a Tallahasseebased nonprofit that supports MS patients through advocacy, education, community outreach, and fundraising MS is treatable with a range of pharmaceutical options, and Ms Acoff has been on a disease-modifying therapy — a once-a-day pill for 11 years She’s never tried medical

marijuana to help relieve the symptoms she experiences, including trouble sleeping, but a discussion with Dr Terel Newton helped educate her about the possible benefits of cannabis for MS patients

“It's definitely something that I'd think about or will think about for my spasms, for potentially sleeping, or for even pain,” she emphasizes

Dr Newton is a board-certified physician specializing in anesthesiology and interventional pain management, with his practice located in Jacksonville He’s also a medical marijuana qualified physician, the Florida medical director of Trulieve, the largest regulated cannabis dispensary in the country, and the author of the book Endocannabinoid Medicine & Pharmacology: A Guide for Physicians and Pharmacists

The Florida Department of Health’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use lists MS as one of the qualifying conditions for treatment, and Dr Newton claims medical cannabis is

effective at relieving pain and inflammation stemming from MS symptoms

“Cannabis can serve as a rescue treatment for many patients and potentially slow the progression of MS,” he explains “Because our body has a type of cannabis [receptor] in it, we can supplement that cannabis with cannabis from the plant This is the endocannabinoid system, and part of it regulates inflammation and nerve function So, by using cannabis as an anti-inflammatory and to supplement our body's endocannabinoid system, it can help regulate the immune system and improve the symptoms and potentially slow the progression of the disease ” He adds that this approach could also benefit the mental health of MS patients, as reducing pain and discomfort often helps ease symptoms of depression and anxiety Medical cannabis treatment options include cannabidiol (CBD), known for its antiinflammatory and pain-relieving effects, as well as low-THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

products like topicals, edibles, capsules, and smoked or vaped flower

“The great thing about cannabis is there's more flexibility,” Dr Newton advocates “It's not like you can only have one route of administration You could have one type of cannabis that you take in daytime that maybe helps you function and another type you take at nighttime that can help you sleep ”

Dr Newton and Ms Acoff both suggest that MS patients interested in using medical cannabis consult their healthcare providers first Ms Acoff adds that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society states that people living with MS should work with their doctors to decide if medical cannabis is the right treatment for them

For those living with MS, Dr Newton also recommends exercise to help keep stress levels low, which reduces flare-ups and improves the immune system’s health To lower the risk of contracting the disease, he suggests taking vitamin D, getting out in the sunlight, and consuming an anti-inflammatory diet and Omega-3 fish oil supplements

Such information and knowledge, like the kind Dr Newton offers, “is really helpful for a lot of people with MS,” says Ms Acoff It’s “good to understand the best way we can treat ourselves ”

PAHO urges stronger action to eliminate malaria in the Americas

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is calling on countries across the Americas to step up their fight against malaria, warning that progress toward elimination has stalled

While the region has made notable gains over the past few decades, recent figures show a troubling plateau In 2023, 505,600 malaria cases were reported in the Americas, with South America accounting for a staggering 92% of them Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia alone made up 80% of all cases, with Colombia leading in infections caused by the more dangerous Plasmodium falciparum parasite

Particular challenges remain in high-burden zones like the Amazon and parts of Haiti, where reaching affected populations remains difficult Issues such as isolated Indigenous communities, transient workers in gold mining, and security risks continue to block access to early diagnosis and treatment

Indigenous groups have been hit especially hard: they made up 31% of malaria cases and 41% of malaria-related deaths in the Americas last year. PAHO emphasized that tackling structural barriers whether geographic, cultural, legal, or financial is urgent to closing the gap in care

“To address this situation, a transformative change is needed to ensure access to malaria diagnosis and treatment in all areas where transmission occurs,” said Dr Sylvain Aldighieri, Director of the Department of Communicable Disease Prevention, Control, and Elimination at PAHO

Despite the challenges, there’s good news too. Since 2018, four countries—Paraguay, Argentina, El Salvador, and Belize have been certified malaria-free Suriname recently celebrated three consecutive years without local transmission, and Costa Rica, Mexico, and Ecuador are also showing strong progress toward stopping the disease

A-Fib And Striving For A Stroke -Free Life

One of several health focuses in the month of May, is stroke awareness

This is extremely important in our Caribbean community, as so often, men and women who otherwise seem healthy, are victims of a stroke Some stroke victims are left physically impaired and unfortunately die as the result of a stroke

What Is A Stroke?

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds, or when there's a blockage or a blood clot in the blood supply to the brain The rupture or blockage prevents blood and oxygen from reaching the brain's tissues

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States. Every year, more than 795,000 U S people have a stroke

One of the unknown factors that causes a stroke, according to local cardiologists, is a cardiac condition known as Atrial Fibrillation or A-Fib

This condition affects some 2 2 million people in the U S annually, and pertains to an irregular heartbeat, often caused when the two upper chambers of the heart beat unpredictably and sometimes rapidly

These irregular heartbeats can cause blood to collect in the heart and potentially form a clot, which can travel to a person's brain and cause a stroke

Some people have pronounced symptoms of A Fib, as they will sense a pulsating, rapid heartbeat over a period of time. But A Fib can also be asymptomatic, that is without any symptom

This type of A-Fib, paroxysmal A Fib, can be quite dangerous, resulting in blood clots that cause a stroke

A Fib is more common in people over age 60, and more common in those with diabetes and high blood pressure Without

symptoms some people are not aware of the problem until they have an electrocardiogram (ECG) done, during an annual or bi-annual physical, when an irregular heart beat is determined

Cardiologists caution that people with A Fib are several times more likely to have a stroke

Symptoms Of A-Fib

The symptoms of A Fib may include the following:

• Frequent heart palpitations

• Feeling tired and out of breath with little exertion

• Unusual sweatiness

• Feeling dizzy and light headed, or having fainting spells

• Pain or pressure in the chest

• Experiencing anxiety or feelings of panic

If these symptoms reoccur, visit your doctor as soon as possible, so the appropriate tests can be conducted to determine the cause

The Tests

The first, and more common test to determine if one has A Fib is the ECG, which will measure the rhythm of your heartbeat for a few minutes If the readout of the ECG detects any irregularity, one is usually referred to a cardiologist, who will conduct more advanced tests

These tests will likely include a stress test, which includes another ECG, but is normally conducted while you walk on a treadmill or take a medicine that causes your heart beat faster

The cardiologists may also prescribe that the patient wear an Holter, a small device attached to the chest, which is in effect a portable ECG that measures one's heart rhythm during a period, normally at

least 24 hours

If A Fib is confirmed, the cardiologists will recommend treatment

Typically, the first course of treatment is to be prescribed with blood thinning medication to prevent clots, which could cause a stroke One of the more common blood thinner is aspirin, preferably Baby Aspirins that are 81mg and are chewable, and can be taken at least once daily

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy arrested

for false imprisonment, battery

A deputy with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Chala, has been arrested on charges of false imprisonment and battery following an alleged assault incident at his apartment on Monday morning The arrest was made by the City of Miami Police Department, Local 10 News confirmed Tuesday

According to an arrest report, officers were called to Chala’s apartment building after receiving a report of an assault Upon arrival, police found the victim, who claimed that Chala had assaulted her

A witness in the building told officers that she was lying in bed when she heard someone banging on her door and shouting, “This guy is trying to kill me He has my bags!” When the witness looked through her peephole, she saw t h e v i c t i m b l e e d i n g f r o m t h e mouth standing outside The witness let her in and called the front desk to request police assistance

The report states that the victim later returned to Chala’s apartment to retrieve her belongings, which Chala placed at his door, including her purse and tennis shoes The witness recorded the exchange

The victim told police she met Chala earlier that morning at E11EVEN Miami nightclub After socializing, he reportedly

invited her to his apartment, telling her, “Let’s go to my place I live alone ”

While at the apartment, the two were “making out” when, according to the report, Chala asked the victim a question she had already answered, which confused her When she attempted to leave the bedroom, Chala allegedly placed his arms around her neck and kissed her She initially thought it was part of a sexual encounter but became alarmed as his grip tightened

The victim said she told him, “Babe, you ’ re

hurting me Stop, stop,” before dropping her weight to the floor Chala allegedly continued to hold her neck as he leaned down over her She then managed to crawl toward the front door, yelling, “Stop, stop, stop Let me go,” and ran to several nearby apartment units seeking help before one resident responded Officers noted visible red marks on her neck and chin, as well as a broken pinky nail and a partially broken ring fingernail

Chala, 54, admitted to bringing the woman home but denied any physical contact beyond “kissing her on the hand ” When asked about a makeup stain on his shirt, he responded, “Maybe I hugged a girl I don’t know ”

He was arrested and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond set at $3,500

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz issued a statement:

“I am disappointed to learn that one of my deputies has been arrested I expect every member of this office to conduct themselves with integrity, professionalism, and respect for the oath they have taken When someone falls short of those expectations, it tarnishes our profession and the public’s trust ”

An investigation is ongoing

Outgoing Prime Minister Stuart Young, who had taken office just 43 days earlier on March 17 following Dr Keith Rowley’s retirement, now becomes the shortest-serving leader in Trinidad and Tobago’s history The previous recordholder, ANR Robinson, served for four years and 363 days

“The members of the population have spoken, and despite tonight I will fight for Trinidad and Tobago,” Young, 50, said in his concession speech on Monday night

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) reported a 54 per cent voter turnout, with the UNC winning 26 out of the 41 constituencies The PNM took 13 seats, while the Tobago People’s Party (TPP) secured two

The UNC has also requested recounts in three constituencies The EBC emphasized that the results remain provisional until the recounts are completed and results validated A total of 1,153,850 citizens were eligible to vote in the general election, which featured 161 candidates from 17 political parties and three independents For Persad-Bissessar, 73, the victory marks a political resurgence more than a decade after she first served as Prime Minister from 2010 to 2015 She will become Trinidad and Tobago’s eighth Prime Minister and the second after Patrick Manning to return to office after losing a general election Manning had lost to Basdeo Panday in 1995 but reclaimed power in 2001

She will officially be sworn in as Prime Minister on Thursday

Addressing jubilant supporters, Persad-Bissessar promised a government that would be responsive and peoplecentered “No one will be left behind, because when UNC wins, everybody wins,” she said “You will now have a prime minister who cares, a prime minister who loves you serve the people, serve the people, serve the people ”

Persad-Bissessar will also make history as the oldest person to assume the nation’s highest office, entering at age 73 If she completes her full five-year term, she will leave office at 78, surpassing the previous age record held by Dr Keith Rowley, who retired at 76 Before Rowley, all previous prime ministers ranged between 50 and 65 years of age during their tenures

The PNM, which had governed since 2015 and sought a third consecutive term, had hoped to extend its legacy of over 50 years in power since Trinidad and Tobago’s independence. Instead, the electorate opted for change

Flanked by members of the UNC coalition, Persad-Bissessar described the moment as “ a tremendous blessing,” and thanked candidates and voters across the country “Let us rejoice and celebrate this day in our history,” she said

She listed a series of priority actions for her incoming administration, including restoring pensions for seniors, increasing public servants’ salaries, and reopening the shuttered Petrotrin refinery and the Children’s Hospital The Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU), a key coalition partner, had lobbied heavily on the Petrotrin issue Union leader Ancel Roget said the refinery’s closure under the PNM had brought “immense suffering” and promised that a UNC-led government would change that

At the PNM headquarters, former Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley admitted defeat, telling reporters, “It is clear we have lost the elections Sometimes you win some we wish all the winners well ” He said the party would announce a new Opposition Leader on Wednesday Young, for his part, emphasized that the PNM would not disappear into political irrelevance “The PNM is not the sour grapes type,” he said “We will bounce back ”

As Trinidad and Tobago turns the page following the election, PersadBissessar’s political comeback not only reshapes the country’s leadership but underscores her enduring influence in the nation’s political history an arc spanning more than a decade and now entering a remarkable second chapter

Nearly 800 undocumented immigrants arrested by ICE in Florida

Nearly 800 people were arrested in Florida during the initial days of “Operation Tidal Wave,” a large-scale immigration enforcement effort jointly conducted by U S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and local law enforcement agencies, ICE officials confirmed

The operation took place from April 21 through April 26 On the social media platform X, ICE said: “In a first-of-its-kind partnership between state and federal partners, ICE Miami and Florida law enforcement arrested nearly 800 illegal aliens this week during the first four days of #OperationTidalWave — a massive, multi-agency, immigration enforcement crackdown ”

“Operation Tidal Wave is a preview of what is to come around this country: largescale operations that employ our state and local enforcement partners to get criminal illegal aliens off our streets,” President Donald Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a press conference Monday Florida Governor Ron DeSantis commented on the effort Saturday, stating: “Operation Tidal Wave is an example of FL and DHS partnering to deliver big results on

immigration enforcement and deportations Florida is leading the nation in active cooperation with the Trump administration for immigration enforcement and deportation operations!”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem added in a post on social media: “This is a warning to all criminal illegal aliens: We’re coming for you @DHSgov, @ICEgov, and our state partners will hunt you down, arrest and deport you That’s a promise ”

The White House has set a national goal of

removing 1 million people annually On April 21, Trump posted on social media: “If we don’t get these criminals out of our country, we are not going to have a country any longer ” Operation Tidal Wave was carried out in coordination with local sheriffs and police departments across Florida, utilizing ICE’s 287(g) authority, which permits local law enforcement to be deputized for federal immigration enforcement duties

The operation targeted areas with high immigrant populations, including Miami-

Dade and Broward counties, as well as the cities of Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Stuart, Tallahassee, and Fort Myers, according to records reviewed by the Miami Herald

ICE has not released a list of individuals arrested or detained However, Leavitt stated that “ among those arrested were a Colombian murderer, alleged MS-13 and 18th Street gang members, and a Russian with a red notice for manslaughter ”

According to the Miami Herald and Tampa Bay Times, the records do not detail how targets were selected but indicate that authorities are seeking to detain “criminal individuals or immigration violators” who have final deportation orders

Florida is home to a significant immigrant population, with around 4 5 million foreignborn individuals as of 2023, representing about 20% of the state’s total population These immigrant communities come from a variety of Caribbean nations, including Cuba, Colombia, and Haiti Florida has the largest concentration of Cuban Americans in the U S , with over 2 million residing in the state, including more than 1 2 million in Miami-Dade County alone It also boasts the largest Colombian American population, with around 826,000 individuals Additionally, Florida is home to the largest number of Haitian Americans in the U S , particularly in South Florida

New York man convicted for murder of Ricky Trooper’s daughter

A three-judge panel of the Superior Court has convicted Derrick Francis, 43, of Bronx, New York, of murder in the 2023 shooting death of his child’s mother, who was also the daughter of Jamaican selector Ricky Trooper

The panel, composed of Judges Earl B Richards III, Eliot D Prescott, and Peter A McShane, unanimously found Francis guilty of murdering 34-year-old McKoy inside the Bridgeport apartment they shared on April 6, 2023 The judges rejected Francis’ claim of “extreme emotional disturbance” as a defense

According to the arrest affidavit, officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault at the Coachlight Square condominium complex shortly before 11:30 a m that day When police arrived, they found McKoy dead from gunshot wounds in her bedroom

A neighbor testified during the trial that she heard Francis and McKoy arguing loudly, McKoy screaming “Stop, stop, stop,” and then a loud gunshot When the neighbor went to check, she reportedly saw Francis leaving the apartment

Following the killing, Francis fled Connecticut and made his way to Solon, Ohio He was apprehended two days later after officers stopped the vehicle he was riding in during a traffic stop Francis ran from the police but was captured after a short foot chase Officers recovered a gun from under the

passenger seat, which forensic testing later confirmed had fired the cartridge cases found at the murder scene Francis, who was already being sought in connection with a prior domestic incident involving McKoy at the time of the killing, was extradited back to Connecticut with the help of the U S Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force

During the trial, State’s Attorney Joseph Corradino argued that Francis’ shifting stories to police first claiming he

wrestled the gun from McKoy, then saying he found it in a drawer while looking for money showed that his actions were not those of someone overcome by emotion, but of someone trying to cover his tracks

“What comes out of the evidence is a defendant concerned with what is his,” Corradino said during closing arguments Francis’ attorney, Gerald Klein, maintained that Francis had “reached a breaking point” in a turbulent relationship and described the killing as a “crime of passion,” but the judges were not persuaded, according to a report by CT Post

The courtroom was filled with emotion Friday as the verdict was read McKoy’s mother shouted “Murderer!” as Francis was led out in handcuffs

Corradino, who tried the case with assistance from Inspector Edward Zack and Paralegal Christina Bennett, praised the professionalism of law enforcement in both Connecticut and Ohio for their role in capturing Francis and securing the evidence needed for conviction

Francis now faces up to 60 years in prison Sentencing is scheduled for June 5, 2025

McKoy’s death shook the Jamaican diaspora, as her father, Ricky Trooper, shared his devastation in a series of Instagram posts mourning his daughter’s loss

Danielle Williams dazzles, Jordan Scott soars at Diamond League opener

Jamaica’s stars blazed into action as the 2024 Wanda Diamond League season roared to life in Xiamen, delivering moments of brilliance, grit, and undeniable promise on Saturday

Leading the Caribbean charge was two-time world champion Danielle Williams, who exhibited the poise and power of a seasoned champion to seize the women ’ s 100m hurdles crown Clocking a sparkling 12 53 seconds (-0 2m/s), Williams held off a spirited challenge from America’s Grace Stark (12 58) and South Africa’s Marione Fourie (12 62) In her first Diamond League triumph since her glorious run in Budapest last year, Williams showcased not only speed but supreme control

“The focus was on the last half of the race, trying to finish strong I think I did that, so I am satisfied,” Williams reflected Despite acknowledging that her time was still shy of the world lead, she remained positive: “It is early in April, and the season is over in September, so we are not even halfway into the training cycle It is definitely a good sign ”

Jordan Scott finds his breakthrough moment

Jordan Scott added to Jamaica’s celebration with a dramatic, career-best victory in the men ’ s triple jump After fouling his first two attempts, Scott showed remarkable composure, unleashing a stunning leap of 17 27m (+0 9m/s) on his third try to clinch the title over China’s Zhu Yaming (17 03m) and America’s Donald Scott (16 85m)

“Based on how the third one felt, I knew I had a big one in there,” said Scott, visibly proud “Unfortunately, my coaches are not here, so those adjustments had to be made on the fly by myself I’m very proud of myself for getting it together, but I do not think it’s all the way there yet We will look at the film and figure out what we can do better for next week ”

Veteran Grenadian Kirani James clocked 44 89 to place fourth in the men ’ s 400m, still fighting to stay with the new wave of quarter-milers led by Botswana’s Bayapo Ndori, who claimed victory with a sizzling 44 25
