School-Based Programs

Woodwind Quintet at Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Center

Musical Ambassadors Program (MAP) Five chamber ensembles of the Richmond Symphony perform over 125 concerts annually for more than 45,000 school children in Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Powhatan, and Richmond Public Schools as well as private and home schools. Performances for students of all ages are upbeat and informal. Programs are ageappropriate, last 30–45 minutes, and relate to the theme of the Elizabeth G. Schneider Discovery Concert. Elementary school programs are most effective when presented to audiences of 300

students or less; same day, back-to-back ensemble performances at one location are available to accommodate larger school audiences. MAP performances are offered to Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, and Richmond Public Schools at no charge and are available to other districts, and private or home school groups at affordable rates.

School-Based Programs

Powhatan County Schools at Discovery, Spring 2018

Elizabeth G. Schneider Discovery Concerts Discovery Concerts, held during the school day, engage young minds through exciting full-orchestra performances. These morning performances by the Richmond Symphony correlate with Virginia Standards of Learning. Both Discovery programs presented in the 2018/19 Season will focus on exploring the elements of music and improving students’ listening skills. Participating schools receive student listening guides, a teacher guide, and concert repertoire in advance of the performance.

Concerts serve city, county, private, and home-schooled students. Tickets are $6. One free chaperone ticket with 10 paid student tickets. Tickets are $4 for Title 1 Schools.

Richmond Symphony “Top Ten” | Grades 3–8 Dominion Energy Center October 24, 2018 @ 10:30am October 25, 2018 @ 9:45 and 11:30am October 26, 2018 @ 9:45 and 11:30am Inspired by a well-known series called “What Every 1st (2nd, 3rd…) Grader Should Know” by E. D. Hirsch, the Core Knowledge Sequence and the BBC series “Ten Pieces,” this concert program attempts to answer the question: what are the important compositions that we want every student to hear? What are the best pieces for getting young listeners interested in music?

This 50-minute performance will introduce listeners to the “classics” of orchestral music. The concert repertoire, curated with the help of RSO musicians and local music educators, features the works of art that every child should have the opportunity to hear. Featured composers include Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Copland, Rossini, and more.

The Story of Babar, The Little Elephant | Pre K–Grade 3 Dominion Energy Center February 28, 2019 @ 10:30am* March 1, 2019 @ 9:45 and 11:30am** For very young listeners, this 40-minute concert serves as an introduction to the orchestra and families of instruments. Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra, Spring 2018

Youth Orchestra Program (YOP) The Richmond Symphony’s flagship educational program consists of four youth orchestras and a wind ensemble providing beginning to advanced musical training. As the premier orchestral training program of Central Virginia, students participate in weekly rehearsals, coachings, and masterclasses by Richmond Symphony musicians, chamber music performances, mentoring, and other musical and social activities.

The Youth Orchestra Program is open to elementary through high school students. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday afternoon, September through May. Learn more about YOP! YOP Rehearsal, Fall 2017

String Sinfonietta

Entry-Level Strings, no audition required

Christie-Jo Adams, conductor (Instructional Specialist for Fine Arts, Richmond Public Schools)

String Sinfonietta is the entry-level string ensemble of the Youth Orchestra Program. Unlike the other orchestras in the YOP, there is no audition requirement for Sinfonietta. In this ensemble, students learn the basics of playing in an orchestra. They learn about their section within the orchestra, and their role within the section. Students learn to watch and follow a conductor, and how to listen to other sections in the orchestra. Above all, the young musicians in String Sinfonietta learn the joy of making music with others.

Camerata Strings

Intermediate-Level Strings, audition required

Rebecca Jilcott, conductor - (Orchestra Director, Matoaca Middle School, Chesterfield County)

Camerata Strings is the intermediate-level string ensemble of the Youth Orchestra Program. To gain entrance into Camerata, students must pass an audition, the first such experience for many students. In this ensemble, students learn proper rehearsal etiquette, how to make music as an ensemble, and take seating auditions regularly.

Students’ skills are challenged with increasingly difficult repertoire and attention to phrasing, bowings, dynamics, and articulations.

Wind Ensemble

Intermediate-Level Winds, Brass and Percussion, no audition required

Christopher Moseley, conductor (Band + Orchestra Director, Varina High School, Henrico County)

The Wind Ensemble is designed to attract motivated middle school and high school students who are eager to challenge themselves and are comfortable playing music at the level of the VBODA district band audition requirements. Wind Ensemble is a first access point into the Youth Orchestra Program for many wind, brass, and percussion players. Enrollment in each instrument is limited to ensure that student musicians get sufficient attention from the conductor and sectional coaches. In this ensemble, students focus on developing solid rehearsal habits, tone quality, range, and confidence.

Youth Concert Orchestra

Intermediate-Level Full Orchestra, audition required

Sandy Goldie, conductor (Assistant Professor of Music Education, Virginia Commonwealth University)

Youth Concert Orchestra (YCO) is a full-orchestra experience (the first of its kind for many students in the group).

Players generally move into YCO with experience playing in other string orchestras or wind ensembles. Listening, blending, and making music within the full orchestra setting is an exciting challenge met by all students in YCO. In this ensemble, principal players learn what it means to effectively lead a section and all players learn to play together with unity, passion, precision, and musical excellence. Students refine musical skills by performing original masterworks, arrangements, and pops favorites.

Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra

Advanced–Level Full Orchestra, audition required

Daniel Myssyk, conductor (Associate Professor and Director of Orchestral Studies, Virginia Commonwealth University)

The Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) offers a pre-college orchestra experience for the serious student musician. Nearly all members of RSYO study with private instructors and all are leaders in their school programs.

RSYO performs masterworks of the orchestral repertoire and, once each season, performs side-by-side with the Richmond Symphony. In RSYO, students hold themselves to a high level of discipline, preparation, and musicianship.

String Intensive Chamber Concert, Summer 2018

Summer Camp: Orchestra Project The Richmond Symphony and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) have partnered to create Orchestra Project, unique orchestra camps for string musicians in grades 2–12. Students study with VCU professors and full-time musicians from the Richmond Symphony. The camps are designed to immerse string players in making great music together.

String Intensive Sunday, June 23–Saturday, June 29, 2019 | VCU campus Designed for advancing string players currently in grades 8–12, String Intensive provides a week of workshops, chamber music, and string orchestra. Audition required.

String Odyssey Sunday, June 23–Saturday, June 29, 2019 | VCU campus This program welcomes students who have been playing their instruments for a minimum of one year and are ready to advance their skills by working with professional musicians. Open to middle and high school students.

Odyssey Jr. Monday, July 8–Friday, July 12, 2019 | Dominion Energy Center A half-day string camp for elementary students in grades 2–6 who have been playing their instrument for a minimum of one year. The day begins with ensemble rehearsal and sectionals, then wraps up with a fun, interactive music class away from their primary instrument, creating a well-rounded musical experience.

Music Together® classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical.

A Lemony Snicket Mystery Saturday, January 19 @ 11am Chia-Hsuan Lin, conductor If you have ever heard an orchestra play, then you know that musicians are most certainly guilty of something. Where exactly were the violins on the night in question? Did anyone see the harp? Is the trumpet protesting a bit too much? In this perplexing mystery, everyone seems to have a motive, everyone has an alibi, and nearly everyone is a musical instrument. Help the Inspector solve the crime as he interrogates all the unusual suspects with great music from the Orchestra. Hear for yourself exactly what took place on that fateful, “well-orchestrated” performance.

MARCH 16 @ 8PM Classical Mystery Tour: The Music of the Beatles Chia-Hsuan Lin, conductor | Imagine The Beatles playing in concert with a symphony orchestra. The four musicians in Classical Mystery Tour look and sound just like The Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than just a rock concert. The full show presents some 30 Beatles tunes sung, played, and performed exactly as they were written.
