Classical Numismatic Review Volume XLII, No. 2 Spring 2017
Welcome to the Spring edition of the Classical Numismatic Review, offering 237 coins and medals. This list opens with a selection of Greek coins, featuring a small group of interesting fractions from Thrace and Macedon, as well as a small number of important gold issues, including ten Persian gold darics. Collectors of RomanEgypt have a handful of well-pedigreed billon and bronze issues from which to choose, all hailing from the AK or Dattari Collections. Gold and bronze pieces again feature in the Roman Imperial section, with an impressive offering of sestertii and aurei available. These are accompanied by our second major offering of siliqua from the 1887 Harp Tree Hoard, a rare opportunity to own coins from a documented hoard uncovered 130 years ago. In the British series, several attractive Anglo-Saxon issues are on offer, as are several rarities from the Lord Stewartby Collection. Victor England Eric J. McFadden

Very rare, only one in CoinArchives. $775 The attribution of this rare issue has been the subject of much debate. While the types mimic issues in the name of Olynthos (cf. SNG ANS 466), some scholars believe that the legend on this piece is only logical for an issue from Chalkis in Euboia, since there is no evidence for a Chalkidian League prior to 432 BC, a date certainly too late for this issue. W. Greenwell, who first published the issue in NC 1897, though, suggested that this coinage may be the sole evidence extant of an earlier league, noting the close similarity of the Olynthos-named issue, and the unlikeliness of it being an issue that fit into the scheme of coinage at Chalkis. H. Gaebler, in AMNG, dismissed Greenwell’s theory and said the issue was certainly from Chalkis, noting also that the eagle is flying right as a Chalkis, rather than upward as on the issues of Olynthos. On close examination, though, this stylistic distinction is almost certainly incorrect. Robinson & Clement noted the weakness of Gaebler’s arguments, and placed the issue at Olynthos, based on the similarity to the Olynthos-signed tetrobols, but also admitted that “the series is still an enigma.” Greenwell’s argument still seems to be the most persuasive, especially given that our knowledge of the corpus of coinage at Chalkis is much better today; this issue simply does not seem to have a place at that city, and other than the “enigmatic” legend, there is no compelling reason to assign it elsewhere. This issue was most recently discussed by S. Psoma, who places the issue at Olynthos in the mid-5th century, and notes that the legend references “the Chalkidians of Olynthos” (cf. S. Psoma, Olynthe et les Chalcidiens de Thrace [Stuttgart, 2001], Appendix, pp. 253–61).

The Daric The ‘Regal’ Coinage of the Persian Empire The Achaemenid series began in the mid-late sixth century BC, contemporary with the famous Kroisid coinage, and lasted until the conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great in the 330s BC. The term “daric” dates from the fifth century BC, and was used by the Greeks as a term for Persian coinage, particularly the gold (see Herodotos 7. 28). Its name derives from that of the Persian king Darios I, under whom the Persian coinage began. Ian Carradice’s study, “The ‘Regal’ Coinage of the Persian Empire” (in Coinage and Administration in the Athenian and Persian Empires [Oxford: BAR, 1987]) forms the modern basis for our understanding of this interesting coinage. The Persians did not traditionally use coinage; instead, they employed the age-old systems of barter and trade-in-kind. Their eventual adoption of coinage was related first to their conquests of Lydia and then to their conflicts with the Greek city states in the sixth through fourth centuries BC. During these wars, the Persians employed Greek mercenaries, who, unlike their eastern counterparts, were accustomed to receiving payment in coinage. Type III coinage was struck during the reigns from Darios I to Artaxerxes II, a period in which Persia suffered internal divisions and rebellion, events recorded by the Greek soldier-author, Xenophon, in his work, the Anabasis (The March Upcountry). The reign of Artaxerxes II was notable also for Persia’s increased involvement in the affairs of Sparta, an unsuccessful expedition against Egypt, and the Revolt of the Satraps 372-362 BC).

Bendall offers a tentative typology and chronology for the confusing and little studied late Roman anonymous silver fractions. He accepts the generally agreed conclusion that the earliest, finest style issues were struck for the occasion of the formal dedication of the new capital of Constantinople on 11 May 330. At this time, the first Roma head series was struck, as well as the female bust types that probably represent one or more of the prominent women associated with the family of Constantine. Bendall further analyses stylistic variations and reported hoard finds, and suggests that further issues in the series appeared on the anniversary dates of the founding, in AD 430 and 530, and in addition that variations continued to be struck for other events during the reign of Justinian I, all celebrating his re-conquest of Italy.

A unique variety of a very rare type with CONOR in the exergue. $5750 Ex Triton VI (14 January 2003), lot 1186; Tkalec (19 February 2001), lot 434; Dr. Anton C.R. Dreesman Collection (Part I, Spink [142], 13 April 2000), lot 372; Numismatic Fine Arts XVIII, Part II (1 April 1987), lot 635. Based on the CONOR in the exergue, Lacam assigned this issue to the reign of the Ostrogothic king Theoderic, an attribution which catalogers of these coins have generally adopted. M.A. Metlich, in his recent study of the Ostrogothic coinage (COI), however, states that no solidi in the name of Zeno can be attributed to Theoderic, implying that such issues must be official coinages of the emperor. In fact, P. Grierson noted a Zeno with Leo tremissis with the CONOR mintmark in Dumbarton Oaks (DOCLR 628), which he assigned to Constantinople. While CONOR is suggestive of an unofficial or imitative issue, examples with this mintmark are recorded with one of seven different officina letters – A, B, Γ, Δ, Є, Z, and Θ. So many officina letters are unknown in contemporary Germanic issues that imitate imperial coinage, and rather suggest a well-structured official mint whose identification is not yet certain. Our coin is the only known example to date of the Є officina.

Selection from the Harptree Hoard of 1887
CNG is pleased to present a selection of coins from the Harptree Hoard of 1887. This hoard was discovered in the village of East Harptree, located approximately 16 miles southwest of Bath. The hoard consisted of 1496 silver coins, five silver ingots, and a Roman silver ring set with a carnelian intaglio stone. The coins are 4th century, covering the period of Constantine the Great to Gratian (circa AD 306 to 383). The landowner, Mr. William Kettlewell, made the hoard available to the British Museum, and it was first written up by John Evans in The Numismatic Chronicle of 1888 (pp. 22-46). The British Museum kept 25 of the most interesting coins from the hoard, and the rest of hoard was returned to the owner. A portion of the hoard, along with the original jug that contained them, was given to a local church for display by William Kettlewell’s son, Colonel Kettlewell. These were eventually stolen. Many years later, the balance of the hoard, nearly 1200 pieces, was given to the father of the individual who subsequently consigned the hoard to Spink, where they were sold last year. Spink wrote up the hoard for their INSIDER Magazine (Summer 2016 issue). Overall, the quality of the Harptree Hoard is exceptional. The coins exhibit beautiful surfaces with lovely dark toning, with very little clipping – remarkable condition for coins of this period. A rare opportunity to own a coin from a documented hoard found 130 years ago.

456135 456072. CELTIC. ‘Ring Money’. Circa 1150-750 BC. AV Plated Æ (20mm, 13.18 g). Thick gold-plated bronze band with thin silver inlay pattern. Van Arsdell 1-3; ABC p. 202; SCBC p. 117; cf. Quiggin p. 279-81; Opitz p. 280. VF, splits near terminal. Rare this large. $2250 Prior to the use of regular round struck or cast coinage, the Celts employed items of various shapes and metals for trade. Although not conclusively identified as an early form of money, these rings have been found in coin hoards and do bear some resemblance to other Celtic objects accepted as “proto-money”, such as small bronze or potin wheels. R.D. Van Arsdell, in his book Celtic Coins in Britain, notes that precious-metal rings such as this “may have had multiple functions; as items of personal adornment (many were hair ornaments), as a means of displaying wealth, and as a medium of exchange. The weights and diameters vary, making it difficult to establish whether denominations existed.” The authors of ABC, on the other hand, regard these as jewelry and ornaments, albeit some ceremonial wealth-storage value attached.

Moreover, CGB MBS 28, lot 793 has a three annulet reverse, but an obverse clearly of Series B1A. If this is correct, the present issue may come from a heretofore unrecognized issue bridging Series B1B with B1A.

Very rare issue reusing Post-treaty obverse die of Edward III with Richard II Type III reverse. $675 Ex Lord Stewartby Collection. Ex Gordon V. Doubleday Collection (Glendining, 7 June 1972), lot 659 (part of); L. A. Lawrence Collection (English Part IV, Glendining, 28 November 1951), lot 1153 (part of). MHG (p. 45) only notes mules of Edward III obverses with reverses of Richard II Type IV, though Lord Stewartby notes such. This muling has been the subject of long debate, with some scholars suggesting they are the first coinage of Richard II (no halfgroats are known for his Type I coinage), while others suggest they are among the first coins of Henry IV. The fact that the muled coins use reverses late in the reign of Richard II, though, seems to indicate the latter are correct.

EF, toned. $3750 Johan (Jan) and Cornelis de Witt were brothers and members of a prestigious Dutch regenten, or ruling family. Associated with the great families in Dordrecht and Amsterdam, they were key figures in Dutch politics of the mid- to late-seventeenth century. The de Witts were republicans opposed to the stadhoudership and the House of Oranje, in particular Willem III. During the period known as the Eerste Stadhouderloze Tijdperk (1650-1672), or period of rule without a Stadhouder, the Dutch Republic was governed by the States General with Johan de Witt as raadpensionaris, or grand pensionary, who was its chief executive, in whom political and military power would be entrusted. Johan’s older brother Cornelis, who served as burgemeester of Dordrecht as well as a member of the States General, closely supported his younger brother’s rule. The mercantile interests of Johan de Witt’s administration prompted the First and Second Anglo-Dutch Wars (1652-1667), to the benefit of the Dutch Republic. By 1672, however, known as the Rampjaar, or “disaster year”, the fortunes of both the Dutch republic, and Johan and Cornelis de Witt, were reversed. A Third Anglo-Dutch War was begun, but a land war had also broken out between the Dutch Republic and Louis XIV of France and his allies. The Dutch Republic was woefully unprepared for a land war, due to the reduced military spending of the de Witt administration. With the successful invasion of the eastern portion of the Dutch Republic, the remaining states sided with the Orangists, who had been marginalized from power during the Eerste Stadhouderloze Tijdperk. Although Johan de Witt resigned as raadpensionaris, his enemies remained unsatisfied. He was charged as a traitor and sentenced to exile. When his brother Cornelis went to assist him, both were seized and brutally lynched by members of the Den Haag militia along with a mob of the citizenry. The event was renowned for its brutality, which included cannibalism (see the paintings by Pieter Frits [1627-1708] and Jan de Baen [1633-1702], as well as the novel The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas for renditions of the events).

The Handbook of Greek Coinage Series by Oliver D. Hoover
More than three decades have passed since David Sear published Greek Coins & Their Values, his revision of Gilbert Askew’s A Catalogue of Greek Coins published by B. A. Seaby in 1951. Since then, the field of ancient numismatics and the hobby of collecting ancient coins have changed so much that now Greek Coins & Their Values would require a complete revision to include all of the most current numismatic information available, list the many new types and varieties unknown to Sear, and determine an approximate sense of rarity for all of these issues. In order to encompass this new material and create a viable reference for the beginning and specialized collector, such a handbook would have to be more than the two volumes which Sear found necessary. As a result, Classical Numismatic Group is publishing The Handbook of Greek Coinage Series, written by Oliver D. Hoover, in a series of 13 volumes, each covering a specified area of Greek coinage with the first being The Handbook of Syrian Coins: Royal and Civic Issues, Fourth to First Centuries BC (Volume 9 in the series). This series is designed to aid the user in the quick, accurate, and relatively painless identification of Greek coins, while providing a cross-reference for each entry to a major work, which will allow the inquirer to pursue more in-depth research on the subject. The subject-matter of each volume is arranged chronologically for royal issues, and regionally for the civic issues; within each region, cities are listed directionally, depending on the region. For those rulers or cities that issued coins concurrently in all three metals, these issues will be arranged in the catalog with gold first, followed by silver, and then bronze; each metal is arranged by denomination, largest to smallest. Known mints for the royal coinage are listed below the appropriate type, making an easy search for a specific mint. Each entry will include a rarity rating based on the frequency with which they appear in publications, public and private collections, the market, and/or are estimated to exist in public or private hands. No valuations are listed, since such values are generally out of date by the time of publication. An online valuation guide at will allow interested individuals the opportunity to gauge the market, and reduce the need for repeated updates of this series. Whether one purchases the entire set for their reference library, or the individual volume pertaining to one’s area of specialization, The Handbook of Greek Coinage Series should provide a useful staging-point from which collectors and interested scholars can pursue their research and interests.
