EveryyearwhenwedevelopourAnnual Report,wealsousethisopportunitytostep backandreflectonourpositiveimpactin thedevelopingworld.

Inreviewingthecumulativeresultsofour workinCNFA’s25countriesofoperation overthepastyear,weareproudofour achievements,andoftheprofoundeffect wehaveonourbeneficiariesbyoffering technicalandbusinesstraining,facilitating business-to-businessdialogue,and engaginginruralandagriculturepolicy reforms.

Ourendeavorsonthesemultiplefronts coalescetoachieveonemajorgoal: Improvingthelivesofmillionsofsmallholder farmersandruralentrepreneurs.

Attheendof2018,wewereeagerto welcomeandapplaudUSAID’snewPrivate SectorEngagementPolicy,whichlaysthe groundworkforUSAIDtocollaboratemore closelywiththeprivatesectorinallphases oftheagency’sapproaches—fromproject designtoimplementation.

This“new”approachcloselyfollows ourown,asdemonstratedbythemany examplesofCNFA’sengagementwiththe privatesectorreviewedinthisreport,afew ofwhicharedetailedbelow.

InRwanda,theUSAID-fundedFeedthe FutureHingaWezeprojectimplemented byCNFAsupportssmallholderfarmers toimproveproductivityandconnect

directlywithmarketactors.In2018,Hinga Wezehelpednearly5,000micro,small andmedium-sizedenterprisestoreceive agriculture-relatedcredit,providingthem withworkingcapitaltopurchaseproduce fromfarmersandfundagriculturalinputsfor bothfarmerorganizationsandagro-dealers.

InSeptember,weproceededwiththecloseoutofourRestoringEfficiencyofAgriculture Production(REAP)projectinthecountry ofGeorgia.From2013to2018,REAP co-investedalongside70agribusinesses throughits$6milliongrantsportfolio, created2,017jobs—andadded$37.5 millioninnewprivate-sectorinvestment. REAPalsohelped43companiestoreceive internationalstandardcertificates.

InAugust,USAID/GeorgiaawardedCNFA thefive-yearUSAIDAgricultureProgramin Georgia.Thisnewprogramwillcapitalize onmorethan13yearsofcontinuedCNFA presenceinGeorgiatocreateatleast3,000 newjobswithinsomeofthemostpromising high-valuehorticulturalvaluechains.The programalsoaimstogeneratemorethan $60millioninnewsalesofhorticultural productsinboththedomesticand internationalmarkets.

InNigeria,CNFAcontinuesitspartnership withUSAIDandNestléthroughtheFeed theFutureNigeriaandNestléMaizeQuality ImprovementPartnership.In2018,the projecttrainedatotalof18,622peoplein themitigationofaflatoxin,fumonisins,and aluminumacrosseachlevelofthemaizeand

soyvaluechains—resultingin660metric tonsofmaizeandsoymeetingthehighest qualitythresholdsforcontaminantssetby Nestlé.

Otherhighlightsof2018includedthe conclusionofthefive-year Farmer-to-FarmerPrograminSouthern Africa,andthestart-upofasimilarprogram thatcoversfiveSouthernAfricancountries, aswellasMoldovainEasternEurope. DeployingAmericanvolunteersin developingcountries—astheseprograms do—is partofCNFA’sDNA,andoneofourcore approachestointernationaldevelopment. Since1991,CNFAhasfielded2,913 volunteers—representing40,000days oftechnicalassistancein22countries. Altogether,ourvolunteerprograms benefited3millionpeoplelivinginrural areas.

Yes,2018wasanothersuccessfulyear. Thankstothesupportofourmainpartners, includingUSAIDandUSDA,weonceagain accomplishedourmissiontostimulate economicgrowthandimprovelivelihoods

bycultivatingentrepreneurship. Andofcourse,noneofthiswouldhave beenpossiblewithoutthehardworkand steadfastdedicationofourCNFAteam aroundtheworld.Someofourteam membersperformtheirworkunderarduous andchallengingconditionsinremoterural areas,whileotherstoillonghoursbehind adesk—butwecommendthemallfor theireffortsinmakingCNFAthetop-tier organizationwearetoday.

Aswenowreviewthesuccessesof2018 chronicledinthisreport,wecanrest assuredthattheseaccomplishments—while inthepast—nonethelesspointourway forward,andwillserveasthefoundationon whichtobuildevenmoreachievementsin 2019.

Tofillcriticalservicegaps,CNFA’sFarm Servicemodelprovidesone-stop-shop accesstoagriculturalinputs,machinery services,training,credit,veterinaryservices andproducts,andmarketingassistance foragriculturaloutputs.CNFAsupports improvementsacrossexistinginputand servicenetworks—fromvillage-level agro-dealers,regionalwholesalers,as wellasmajorinputmanufacturersand distributors—andfacilitatesinvestmentsin businessexpansionsandstartups.

Women’sempowermentisfundamentalto CNFA’smissionofstimulatingeconomic growthandimprovingrurallivelihoods. Bybuildingprogramsaroundmeasurable targets,CNFAworksnotonlytoincrease women’sparticipationandbenefits fromprograminterventions,butalsoto increasewomen’sempowermentinthe agriculturalsector.Bysupporting women-ownedandwomen-operated businesses,andtrainingwomeninbusiness skillsandentrepreneurship,CNFAhelps increasewomen’saccesstoinputs, informationandmarkets,boostwomen’s shareofhouseholdincome,andincrease women’scontrolofincomeandhousehold decision-making.Thisleadstoincreased spendingonnutritionandschooling, improvedfoodsecurity,andbetterqualityof lifeforwomenandtheirfamilies. Constructivemaleengagementisalsoa criticalpieceofwomen’sempowerment. CNFAworkswithmen,women,and caretakerstoincreaseunderstandinginall membersofthehouseholdoftheelements thatenablewomen’saccesstoresourcesthat improveeconomicandnutritionaloutcomes forthewholefamily.

CNFAintegratesamarket-systemsapproach acrossallofitsprogrammingbyfocusing oninclusive,resilient,andsustainable interventionsthatidentifysystemicgapsin marketsandreflectadeepunderstanding oftheincentivesandbehaviorsthat motivatemarketactors.Aspartofthis approach,CNFAensuresthatactorsare competitiveinthelocalandglobalsystem, thatthebenefitstoactorsareinclusiveof smallholderfarmers,women,youth,and otherdisadvantagedgroups,andthat programsareabletoovercomemarket shocks.CNFA’smarketsystemsinterventions correspondtotheareasofgreatestneed, closelymonitoringresultstoensure evidence-basedapproachesandleveraging newtechnologies,partnerships,and practicestomaximizeimpacts,therefore improvingtheabilityofhouseholdsand communitiestoaccessincome.

CNFArecognizesthatagricultural developmentandnutritionareintimately interconnected.Topromotetheinteraction betweenagricultureandnutrition,CNFA presentsopportunitiesforpractical andeconomicallysoundagricultural diversificationsystems.Weadoptagender lensandusesocialbehaviorchangeto improveaccessibilityandaffordabilityof food.CNFAenablesprogrambeneficiaries toimprovetheirintakeofnutritiousfoods criticalforhumandevelopment,particularly forpregnantandlactatingwomen,and childrenundertheageoftwo.

CNFAengagesprivatesectorpartners tobuildinclusivemarketsystemsand drivesolutionsthatachievelasting impact,facilitatingimprovedcapacity, sustainability,andwealthcreationacross theagriculturalmarketsystem.Toachieve this,CNFAworkswiththeprivatesector tobuildandstrengthenmarket-based agriculturalsystemsindevelopingcountries byharnessingexpertiseandcapital resources,facilitatingbusiness-to-business connections,developingthecapacityof smallandmediumenterprises,andbuilding theentrepreneurialskillsetsoffarmersand communities.

CNFA’sworkenhancestheabilityof individuals,households,andcommunities tomitigate,withstand,andrecoverfrom crisesresultingfromsocial,economic,and environmentalchallenges.CNFAsupports smallholderfarmersandtheircommunities toincreasefoodsecurityandmanagerisk bydiversifyinglivelihoods,improvingaccess tofunctionalmarkets,buildingsocialand systemicsupportsystems,andpromoting disasterriskreductionstrategies.CNFA buildshouseholdandcommunityassetsas wellaspartnerswithgovernmentsandthe privatesectortoimprovethecapacityofall actorstowithstandshocks.

CNFApromotessustainableagricultural practicesbysharingexpertisethatenables farmerstoincreaseproductivity,improve quality,andenhancemarketvalueoftheir cropstomeettheeconomicandnutritional needsoffamiliesandcommunities.By utilizingitstechnicalexpertiseandcorporate partnershipswiththeprivatesector,CNFA providesaccesstoinputsandinformation onclimate-smartnaturalresource managementsuchasimprovedwater conservation,soilfertility,andintegrated pestmanagementpractices.

CNFArecognizesthevalueoftechnology inincreasingagriculturalproductivityand competitivity.Aspartofourprogram design,weforgepartnershipsthatscaleup technologyandinnovationtoimproveglobal foodsecurity.

InOctober2018,CNFA’sVicePresidentof ProgramDevelopment,EdKeturakis,spoke aboutincreasingagriculturalqualityand efficiencythroughtheuseoftechnologyat theU.S.ChamberofCommerceFoundation’s FoodForwardSummit,afuture-looking platformthathighlightstrailblazerswho arereimaginingthefoodsystemtofeeda growingandchangingpopulation.Keturakis explainedhowCNFAteamedupwithMobile Assay,thecreatorofarapiddiagnostictest foraflatoxins,toimprovethesoyandmaize supplychaininNigeria.

Smallholderfarmersindevelopingand emergingeconomiesoftenhavelimited accesstoagriculturalinformationfor improvedfarmmanagement,planning, andcoordinationforinformeddecision making.IntheirsubmissionfortheJohn H.CostelloAward—anawardbestowed uponthewinnerofanorganization-wide competitionthatprovidesfinancingfora fieldlevelinnovationtobedevelopedand tested—CNFAemployees,NegaBerecha andValeriGulbani,aimedtoaddressthis issuebydevelopingaFarmers’Appreciation andRewardsManagement(FARM)database, anICTbasedcustomermanagement andrewardmanagementsystemthat providessmallholderfarmerswithaccessto agriculturalinformationthroughmobile phoneSMSsupport.TheFARMdatabase waspilotedwithcustomersofFarmService Centers—CNFA’smarket-orientedmodel fordeliveryoffarmservicesandsupplies–inEthiopiaandinGeorgia,resultingin improvementsinaccesstoinputsandprice informationthatiscriticaltoincreasing agriculturalproductivityandquality.

CNFAcreatesopportunitiesforyouthby providinghands-ontrainingstobuildbusiness andprofessionalskills,offeringinternship programstogainpracticalexperience,and fosteringleadershiptoempoweryouth tobecomeproductivemembersoftheir communities.

ThroughtheUSAIDStrengthening AgriculturalValueChainsandYouth (SAVY)projectinGuinea,CNFA teamedupwithpartnerstolaunchthe AVENIRprogram—aneight-month apprenticeshipprogramthathelps buildentrepreneurshipskillsinGuinean youththroughtrainingandinternships intheagriculturalvaluechain.Sinceits inception,theAVENIRprogramtrained 143youthinagro-businessskills.These traineeshavedevelopedmorethan100 businessplansandestablished12formal companiesthatprovideagricultural servicesandproductsinruralareasof Guinea.

TheFeedtheFutureHingaWeze ActivityprovidesRwandanyouthwith theopportunitytogainprofessional experienceandskillsthroughinternship programs.In2018,HingaWezehired 36internstosupportterracingand irrigationactivitiesthroughoutthe project’s10targeteddistricts.Interns

alsoprovidedsupporttoextensionand livestockactivities,nutritionandsocial behaviorchangecommunication,and programmaticfinancialmanagement. Internsgainedskillsworkingwithagrodealerswhileplayingafundamental roleinassistingagro-inputmarketing anddeliveringsuchinputstofarmersin remoteareasofRwanda.

11universitystudentsreceivedfinancial supportfromtheUSAIDRestoring EfficiencytoAgricultureProduction (REAP)project’sMariamKuteliaResearch Grantfortheirresearchaimedat advancingagricultureinGeorgia.Nine studentsalsoparticipatedinresearch onthebrownmarmoratedstinkbug infestationthatthreatenshazelnuts andothercropsinGeorgia.Duringan internationalscienceconferencehosted byREAP,U.S.andGeorgianscientists commendedthesestudentsfortheir insightfulfindings.

Inearly2018,CNFApilotedanew assessmenttooldesignedtoevaluatethe professionalismofagro-retailers.Thenew SCOPEInputRetailertool—developed byCNFAincollaborationwiththeDutch firmSCOPEinsight,theWorldBank’s InternationalFinanceCorporation,and Bayer—measuresandscoresskillsranging fromfinancialandinventorymanagement tobusinessplanningandmarketing strategy.Thescoreshelpretailersidentify

gapsintheirowncapacityandaidsglobal agribusinesscompaniesindecidinghow andwheretodistributeproductsthrougha reliablenetworkofretailers.CNFApiloted theuseofSCOPEInputRetailerwith60 agro-retailersinEthiopiaandusedthe findingstoinformthestructureofthefinal assessmenttool.CNFAisnowworking withtheInternationalFinanceCorporation todesignasuiteoftrainingmaterialsthat correspondwiththeassessmentcriteriain ordertodelivertailoredtrainingprograms foragro-retailersinemergingeconomiesin LatinAmerica,Africa,andAsia.

InJuly2018,PatomEnterprise—a100 percentfemale-ownedfoodprocessing businessinPaynesville,Liberia—obtained avarietyoffood-processingequipmentdue totheeffortsofCNFA’sLiberiaAgribusiness DevelopmentActivity(LADA).LADA,a USAIDFeed-the-Futureinitiative,provided equipmentthatwillhelpthecompanyscale upitscapacitytopackageanddistribute driedfruitsandvegetables,aswellas diversifyitsproductofferingsfordomestic andinternationalmarkets.LADAalso assistedPatomincreatingamarketingand rebrandingplanandaidedthecompany inpitchingitsbusinessplantoLiberia’s ChamberofCommerce.Theseeffortsled toPatomCEOPatriciaGanta’sselection toparticipateintheAfricanGrowthand OpportunityActExpoinNewYorkin September2018,wheresheestablished businessrelationshipsthatwillleverageher company’snewproductioncapacity.Thanks toLADA’sefforts,PatomEnterprisenow hasthecapacitytostartexportingdried pineappleandspicestotheUnitedStates.

Amalima—aUSAID-fundedprogramthat aimstoincreaseanddiversifytheincomes ofvulnerablehouseholdsbyimproving agriculturalproductivity,strengthening disasterriskreductionsystems,and improvinglinkagestomarketsandfinancial services—workedwithcommunitygroups tosupportfemaleownershipofassetsin Zimbabwe.TheHananigroup(whosename means“happiness”)isaVillageSavings andLending(V&SL)group,agroupwho savetogetherandoffersmallloanstoone another,thatraisesimprovedbreedinggoats asanincomegeneratingprojecttosupport theempowermentofwomenandtheir households.ThroughAmalima,theHanani GoatProjectreceivedtrainingsontheV&SL model,businessplanning,conservation agriculture,livestockmanagement,and farmingasabusiness.TheHananiGoat Projectreceivedamatchinggrantto expandtheirprojectfurtherbybuilding agoatbreedingandservicecenter.Their projectnowservesasasourceofimproved goatbreedsinthecommunityandasmall livestocklearningcenter.

Côted’Ivoireisthelargestcacao-producing countryintheworld,andearningsfromthe cultivationandsaleofcocoasupport3.5 millionIvorians,includingmanysmallholder farmersandtheirfamilies.Thesesmallholder cocoafarmershavelimitedcapacityto increasetheamountofqualitybeansthey cansell,whichwouldotherwisebeaviable meansofincreasingtheirincomeand improvingtheirlivelihoods.

Tosupportthecocoasectorinaddressing theseandotherchallenges,CNFAis implementingthethree-yearMaximizing OpportunitiesinCocoaActivity(MOCA). ThisUnitedStatesDepartmentof Agriculture(USDA)FoodforProgress activityprovidescapacity-building,training,

andsupportservicestococoaproducers, cooperatives,andexportersinCôted’Ivoire withtheaimofimprovingthesupplyof high-qualitycacaobeansandincreasing farmincomes.Activitiestoimproveand expandthetradeofcocoaandcocoa productsfocusonimprovingthequalityof thecrop,theprocessingandpost-harvest handlingtechniques,andstrengthening themarketlinkagesandorganizationof producergroupstowardsmoreadequately meetingexistingmarketdemand.The projectisalsoimprovingmarketaccessby targetingsupporttounorganizedfarmers, associations,andcooperativesthatdonot currentlyhaveformalrelationshipswith exportersandfacilitatinglinkageswith reputablecocoaprocessorsandbuyers,all withtheaimtoboostfarmers’incomesfrom thesehigh-valuecommodities.

AlthoughRwandahasmadestridesin improvingnutritionalintakeforwomenand children,therearestillnumerouschallenges toovercome.Tocombatthis,USAID’sFeed theFutureRwandaHingaWezeActivity, implementedbyCNFA,creatednutrition caregroupsthatfocusondisseminating nutritionmessages,encouragingmembers tosaveincomeforthepurchaseof nutritiousfoods,andimprovinghygiene andfoodsafetypractices.Asamother andcommunityleaderinGatsibo,Denyse Nyirabakunzijoinedthelocalcaregroup establishedbyHingaWezeinordertolearn moreabouthowtomobilizehercommunity toimprovetheirnutrition.“Ihavelearned toprepareabalancedanddiversifieddiet andhowtopreservevegetablestobeused duringdryseasons,”Denyseshared.She createdakitchengardennearherhome toserveasamodelforothercommunity membersaswellastoprovidevegetables forherownfamily.

Denyse’sgroupisjustoneofthe1,326 nutritioncaregroupsthatHingaWezehas established,reachingmorethan37,000 householdsthatarecoachedbycommunity healthworkersandfarmerpromoters. Througheducationandextension programs,caregroups,andSocialBehavior ChangeCommunication(SBCC)messages

relatedtonutrition-sensitiveagriculture,the projectisontracktoincreasethenutritional statusof200,000householdsintheten Activitydistrictsby2022.Afterjustone year,theprojecthasincreasedthedietary diversityscoreforwomenofreproductive ageby8%,theaveragepercentageof children6-23monthsreceivingaminimum acceptablediet(MAD)by5.8%,the incometopurchasenutritiousfoodsfor 9,015households,andtheabilitytoadopt improvedfoodsafetybehaviorsfor6,493 households.

Alaa,Hajar,andMariamarejustthree oftheyoungwomenhiredbyElBaiaho AgriculturalCommunityDevelopment AssociationinEgypttosupporttheir post-harvestoperationssorting, packagingandstoringavarietyofcrops, includinggrapes,pomegranates, tomatoes,andgarlicforexport.

InJuneof2018,thesethreeyoung womenpausedtheirworktoparticipate inatrainingfocusedonnutritionfor womenintheagro-processingworkforce. AcrossEgypt,undernutritionandstunting ratesforchildrenremainhigh,which resultsineconomiccoststhathinderthe developmentofthenation.

Toaddressthisissue,USAID’sFeed theFutureEgyptFoodSecurityand AgribusinessSupport(FAS)project organizedtrainingsaimedateducating participantsonthetypesoffoodthat arecriticalforimprovinghealthandchild developmentaswellasgoodhygienic practicestoensurefoodsafety.“Ilearned aboutthefoodpyramidwhichhelpedme toknowwhattypesoffoodandhowmuch toeattostayhealthy,”saidAlaa.

In2018,theFASnutritionteamdelivered trainingsoneffectivenutritionpractices toover2,000FASparticipants,including womenandgirlsworkingatsimilarpacking housesandattendinginputsupplyfairs andeventshostedbyFAS.Theproject planstocontinueoutreachtoimprovethe nutritionalstatusparticularlyofwomenand childreninEgypt.

AccessibilityandEfficiencyCNFA isworkingwithleadingU.S.and multi-nationalagricultureandtechnology companiestoensurefoodsecurityfora growingglobalpopulation.In2018,CNFA signedaMemorandumofUnderstanding withCortevaAgriscience,apartofthe AgricultureDivisionofDowDupont–a globalproducerofseeds,cropprotection products,anddigitaltoolsforgrowers. TogetherCortevaandCNFAaimtoimprove smallholderfarmerlivelihoodsbyfacilitating marketaccess,enhancingagribusiness competitiveness,increasingproductivity,and improvingaccesstoinputs.

CNFAisalsoteamingupwithInnové, aVirtualReality(VR)firmthatdesigns solutionsfortrainingandoperations.At CNFA’sfirsteverSmallBusinessDayevent, InnovéprovidedalivedemooftheirVR goggles.InRwanda,Innovéisworking withCNFA’sFeedtheFutureHingaWeze Activitytoconductatrainingpilotforagrodealersusingtheirvirtualrealitytraining systemtobuildskillsonthebusiness managementofretailoperationsand inventorymanagement.

Throughout2018,theUSAID-funded AmalimaprogramsupportedVillageSavings andLending(VS&L)groups,likethewomen ofThembisaVS&LGroup,incommunities thatwereimpactedbythetropicalcyclone Dineowhichdestroyedcommunityassets likeproperty,livestock,andpersonal documents(nationalidentificationcardsand healthcards)inWesternZimbabwe.

AmalimaworkswithVS&Lgroupsto improveaccesstodisasterriskreduction knowledgeandsavings,especiallyfor women,andtobuildcommunityresilience toshockslikethe2017cyclone.The disasterriskreductiontrainingisfocused onhazardidentification,mapping,ranking, andstrategizingofmitigationmeasures andplans.Additionally,Amalimatrains groupsonmanaginggroupfundsand providingcommunityloans.Through assistancefromtheAmalimaprogram, membersofThembisaVS&LGrouphave beenabletoraisefundstoconstruct flood-proofhousingworth$1,105USD eachtobetterprotectthemselvesagainst futureflooding.Sevenothergroupsinthe villagearealsointheprocessofsavingup fundsfortheconstructionofsimilar flood-proofstructures.

InBurkinaFasoandNiger,theproduction ofpoultryandsmallruminantsplaysamajor roleinlivelihoodstrategiesandincome generation,particularlyforwomen,tosave, invest,andmanageriskforhousehold needsandemergencies.Inaneffortto improvethisresilience,theUSAIDResilience EconomicGrowthintheSahel–Accelerated Growth(REGIS-AG)programisscalingup aprivatesectorledmodelforestablishing animalhealthservicenetworkstotrainand strengthenanimalhealthknowledgeand capacity.Eachnetworkprovidesservices suchastechnicaladvice,vaccination, deworming,andwoundcarethrough CommunityAnimalHealthWorkers,female village-levelvaccinators,andveterinary stores.Additionally,theprojectfacilitates opportunitiestoaccessfinancebyhelping veterinariansdevelopbusinessplansand linkingthemtofinancialinstitutions.Since 2015,REGIS-AGhelpedestablishnine animalhealthnetworksandstrengthened thecapacityoffourothers.

InAngola,constraintstoimprovingthe qualityandmarketabilityofhorticulture productsexistacrossthevaluechain.In responsetothesechallenges,USAID’s Farmer-to-Farmerprogram,implementedby CNFAinSouthernAfrica,fieldedvolunteers AnnSavage(Oregon)andCourtneyJallo (California)toprovidetechnicalassistance toimprovethemanagementpracticesand overallstructureoftheLukungaAssociation, afarmerassociationthatproducesa varietyofcropsforlocalconsumption.Ann Savage,smallbusinessdevelopmentexpert, providedassistancetotheassociationby advisingonimprovedadministrativeand financialskills.CourtneyJallo,anagricultural developmentspecialistandpostharvest educator,trainedtheassociationmembers onsoilregenerationandtesting,andhelped thefarmersconstructacompostpitwhich wasusefulinimprovingsoilstructure, fertility,andwaterretention.TheLukunga Associationhassincerestructuredandis utilizingimprovedmanagerialskillsand soilregenerationtechniquestoimproveits businesspractices.Atitscore,Farmer-toFarmerisaimedatgeneratingsustainable economicgrowthandfoodsecurityby fosteringsuchpeople-to-peoplediplomacy.

USAID’sFarmer-to-Farmer program,implemented byCNFAinSouthern Africa,fieldedvolunteers AnnSavage(Oregon)and CourtneyJallo(California) toprovidetechnical assistancetoimprovethe managementpractices andoverallstructureofthe LukungaAssociation.

TheTwigireMuhinzinationalextension model,launchedinAugust2014bythe GovernmentofRwanda,wasdeveloped toensurethatallfarmershaveaccessto agriculturaladvisoryservices.Underthe RwandaHingaWezeActivity–a USAID-fundedprojectthatsustainably increasessmallholderfarmerincome, improvesthenutritionalstatusof Rwandanwomenandchildren,and increasestheresilienceoftheagriculture andfoodsystemstothe changingclimate–CNFAcollaboratedwith theGovernmentofRwandatoconduct theTwigireMuhinziNeedsAssessment andidentifythemodel’sstrengthsand opportunitiesforimprovement.The assessmentmaderecommendationsto improveattendanceatexistingandnew

demonstrationplots,increaseinput-supply deliveryandoutreachtodisadvantaged communities,andstrengthenFarmerField Schools(FFS),agroupoffarmersthatmeet undertheguidanceofatrainedfacilitator tolearnagriculturalbestpracticesthrough hands-ontrainingsanddemoplotplanting. GuidedbytheresultsoftheTwigireMuhinzi NeedsAssessment,HingaWezetrained over400government,non-profit,and privatesectorextensionagentsandover 2,000FFSfacilitatorsandfarmerpromoters onIntegratedSoilFertilityManagement, Climate-SmartAgriculturepracticesand technologies,nutrition,andgenderand youthinclusion.TheTwigireMuhinziNeeds AssessmentcontinuestoguidetheHinga Wezeobjectiveofsustainablyimproving agriculturalproductivityintheproject’sten implementationdistricts.

WithsupportfromGIZ,theGerman developmentagency,CNFAEuropeis strengtheningtheresilienceofagropastoralistsagainstdroughtandclimate changeintheAfarregionofEthiopiaby increasingaccesstomarketsandimproving agriculturalinputs.Toaccomplishthis,CNFA Europepilotedactivitiesthatbuildthe capacityofprivatesectoractorsintheareas offorageproduction,charcoalproduction, oilcropproductionandprocessing,andthe tradeofveterinarydrugs.

CNFAEuropeservesasoneofthree partnersintheAgriconsultingEurope SAconsortiumforthemarket-driven “TechnicalAssistancetoSupportthe ImplementationofInvestmentPromotion andBusinessLinkagesinGhana”project fundedbytheEuropeanCommission.In theirrole,CNFAEuropeprovidesoversight andbackstoppingsupport,aswellas administrativeandmanagementcounsel.

FundedbytheMillenniumChallenge Corporation,CNFAEuropeconducted alivestockstudyinNigertoassess thedifferenttypesofcomplementary investmentswhichwillmodernizeup to22livestockmarketsinNiger.The studyanalyzesincomeopportunitiesfor herdersinlivestockmarketsaswellasthe availabilityoftechnologiesandresources forherderstoobtainmoreaccurate livestockweighingandpricinginformation.

CNFAEuropeissupportingAgriconsulting EuropeSAonthe“TechnicalAssistance fortheCoffeeandCocoaValueChainsin Uganda”projectfundedbytheEuropean Commission.Intheirrole,CNFAEurope providesoversightandbackstopping support,aswellasadministrativeand managementcounseltothefieldteamin Uganda.
