The seniors have landed By Mary Rathman Park News editor

Fall is here, winter is right around the corner, and that means we can look forward to cooler weather, holiday gettogethers and the arrival of our seasonal friends to the best senior communities in our state. I’m speaking, of course, about the northern residents returning to Zephyrhills and Dade City. We at Park News would like to take a moment to welcome you back to your Florida home. We’ve put together this special “Welcome Back” issue of Park News in order to acquaint — or reacquaint — you with some of the local events, churches and clubs that are offered in east Pasco. Inside, you will find important phone numbers, information on health, area shopping, libraries and more. And, as always, we’ve included news that is submitted by local parks. Park News is all about our seniors and the communities you live in. It is published every other week, and anyone from any park can

write and take photos for this publication. This year, we’re hoping to get even more parks involved. We want to hear about you and your neighbors, and we want to see what’s happening in your parks through your pictures. So, pull out a pen and paper, dust off that camera lens and computer and get started! Send your news and digital photos to mrathman@cnewspubs.com. You can also fax news to (813) 909-2802 or send it to Park News, P.O. Box 479, Lutz, Fla. 33548. Thanks to those of you who have been submitting your news throughout the seasons. We appreciate you showing us the fun seniors have and the exciting events happening in your neighborhood. If you happen to visit any of the businesses that advertise within these pages, be sure to thank them for helping make this paper possible. Need more information? E-mail me at mrathman@cnewspubs.com or call the office at (813) 909-2800. Park News is distributed to mobile home parks every other Wednesday. If you aren’t receiving it, call us. Here’s to another great southern winter in the company of our northern friends!

BAKER ACRES

Baker Acres is spruced up and ready to welcome back its seasonal ranchers. (Photos courtesy of Charlotte Cote)

Something for everyone By Charlotte Cote Baker Acres

Don and Marla Johnson, Baker Acres resort managers, along with our famous and friendly Paul Bunyan at our entrance, are welcoming back our regular ranchers as well as many new ranchers for the winter season. Don has kept the park crew sprucing things up all summer with new sidewalks in front of the recreation hall, painting re-

strooms and doors and additional perimeter fencing. Marla tells me she has been busy registering and welcoming new ranchers to the park with only a few seasonal lots left open. This certainly speaks well of the hospitality they continue to extend. Carefree Resorts and the Baker Acres activity committee joined forces and rebuilt the entire bocce court. The area has been resurfaced with new sideboards added. New permanent carpeting has been ordered and should be in within a couple of weeks.

Bench parts have been ordered and will be installed within a few weeks as well. All bocce players are looking forward to a terrific bocce season. Activities in the park continue to expand this year. With a new projector installed at the end of last year that provides large screen viewing, there will be the addition of Sunday night at the movies. Some of the other activities include two water exercise classes each day, horseshoes, shuffling, poker, cribbage, pinochle, euchre, bingo, ceramics, line dancing classes, bible study, church services, table tennis, music jam sessions, chair volleyball, all of which are held at least on a weekly basis if not daily. There

Paul Bunyan greets all ranchers at the entrance to Baker Acres.

are also many other activities not listed that happen on a seasonal basis such as yard sales, craft sales, luncheons, holiday meals and much, much more. With all of the above to do and participate in, the ranchers at Baker Acres certainly have a full and active season ahead.

Why is the weather so unpredictable? We had such fantastic cooler weather, then the rains came and now the cold front.Time to get the “hoodies out and put the shorts away for a while at least. But, it can change so quickly. So many people are asking about the tree with those beautiful pink flowers — we always called them rain trees, but I still don’t know the proper name for them. They really give our area something beautiful to look at. If anyone knows what they are, let me know. We still haven’t located the missing yard ornaments that have disappeared from the Newland and Michaud yards. Keep your eyes open for a concrete figure of a raccoon holding an ear of corn and several gnomes. Rusty and Betty Siler served coffee and doughnuts for our recent coffee social last weekend. Dee and Vic Botting, along with Loretta Green, served this week.Thank you all! Our attendance is really picking up fast and it’s exciting to see who is returning next. Several families returned last week — John Bowens, Lee and Randal Smith, Otto and Marge Reinbold, Clayton and Helen Martinson and Joan Clate. Welcome back! Mert and Lois Wyant are celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary, and Otto Reinbold celebrated his birthday on the 11th. We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Johanna Ott and send our condolences to her husband, Les, and the family.

Russ Heffelfinger is chairing the Thanksgiving dinner once again this year. We always have great helpers and so no one has to work that hard. We’ll have the usual dinner with roast turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, candied sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls and butter and for dessert‌it should be pumpkin pie. What a super menu and all this for $6. Tickets must be obtained before Nov. 21 or no dinner. Call Russ at (813) 780-1012 for tickets and information. Carol Cooper has volunteered to work up the monthly calendar for us again and that is quite a job. All the chairmen should call Carol with your projects and plans so she can get it on the calendar for that month. Carol is very busy designing and printing the tickets for our entertainment. The first show will start right after the New Year with Ronnie Prophet on Jan. 14.Tickets will go on sale before the Christmas holidays. Ed Snow and Eddie Morehouse sponsored a Welcome Back doggie roast You and many people enjoyed the friendship and hospitality. What a nice way to get together to meet your neighbors and new residents. Our bus trips are going great. Hard Rock Casino at Immokalee has been the favorite trip so far, with the Gasparilla Parade a very close second. I’ve even started taking reservations for the Railroad Museum and the Strawberry Festival. Our longest trip this season will be to New Orleans in February. If you would like to hear more about these trips, call me and I will send you a tour schedule.

Kicking off the season Jim’s RV Park decided to celebrate the beginning of this winter season with a great Halloween party. Good food, awesome music, and lots of dancing filled the evening. Great costumes were the icing on the cake. Winners for best costumes were Bob McElroy and Kathy Briggs. Everyone had a wonderful time. (Photo courtesy of Linda Brownell)

GROVE RIDGE RV RESORT

Grove Ridge residents are ready By Diane Richards Grove Ridge RV Resort

Here at Grove Ridge, across the street from Southfork, winter residents are returning daily.Activities are starting — sewing on Monday, golf on Monday and Wednesday, and bingo will begin Wednesday evenings. Our first fall coffee social was Nov. 5 with rolls furnished by carefree. Upcoming events were discussed with this list of entertainment scheduled: Jan and Joe Edwards in Dec., Rick Chapman

and Tony and Trish in Jan., Kid Fiddlers in Feb., and Trey Drees in March. Dances are scheduled for New Year’s Eve,Valentine’s, St. Patrick and end-of-year parties. Residents are reminded to get their crafts ready for the craft sale on Feb. 12 and also store items for the park-wide yard sale that day. Thanksgiving Dinner is being planned and volunteers are needed to help Dorothy Sobier cook and serve those turkeys. Our clogging instruc-

tor, Polly Pflepsen, will be back in Dec. to start those lessons. Bob and Bunny Posar, line dance instructors, will start in Jan. Regis Norris will get the bowling league going and Mike Hartzler, the bocce gang. Shuffleboard needs a leader this year and Doug Dixon will lead the pool hall games.

Our Euchre evening will begin soon. Special events scheduled include a spaghetti dinner, baked potato dinner, Horserace Afternoon, Holey Holey games, burgers/brats lunch, bean soup supper, strawberry social, silent auction, pancake breakfasts and ice cream socials. We are also hopeful water aerobics will take place this winter. You can tell from these lists, residents are ready to volunteer, like to play, be entertained and of course eat!

PALM VIEW GARDENS

Hearty food and friendships By Lynda Warner Palm View Gardens

First of all, I would like to welcome our snowbird residents back for the winter season. Our park is gradually returning to its seasonal status and the fun and activities are well on their way to beginning. Our first calendar for the month of November has been produced by Sherry Christopher and she once again has listed new and old activities for each day of the month. A big thank you goes out to Sherry as she produces this calendar each month of the season for our use. Ladies golf is already beginning and although it is a bit chilly, I am sure the ladies will be warming up the golf courses with their game. Cribbage players will be gathering in the hall on Monday nights at 6:45 p.m. so feel free to join in the fun. Shuffleboard players are meeting each day of the week so if you can only join in on a certain day, be sure to come on down and join them. Several craft classes are to be held in the back buildings so if you are interested in stained glass methods, ceramics, or wood carving, be sure to check the dates on the calendar for your choice and time. Food and friendship are always impor-

tant items around Palm View Gardens and this season will not be neglected. Already Arty Harberts began the season with his Saturday hot dog lunch and already, this was a big success. Pancakes are a once a month dinner here at our park and ready to begin. On Sundays, once a month in the afternoon, residents gather at the pavilion (weather permitting) to have our “Happy Hour.” Snacks are always available and be sure to join your friends for this fun time. Thanksgiving Dinner for park residents will at 1 p.m. Nov. 25. If you would like to attend, you will need to sign up with a hostess for your table. Sign up sheets are always posted on the bulletin board in the back of the hall. Mary Smith is the chairperson for this event.Turkey is furnished by the Friendship Club in connection with the Wilder Corporation. Already our Saturday morning coffee and donut hour has grown with many park residents meeting at the hall to get the weekend started. At this hour,Arty Harberts, Friendship Club president, announces activities for the week and any other interesting items. New residents are always welcome to join in and be sure to be introduced. A note of neglect on my part. In the first issue of the paper I wrote an article about

the Michigan Picnic and the committee members. I inadvertently missed the name of one of the members, Beth Burton. Sorry about this Beth. I know it takes a lot of folks to put this summer activity on to make it such a success. Good job to all of you. Throughout the season Palm View Gardens has guest performers appear for our entertainment enjoyment. In the past, Cathy Keating was the park activities director; however, this last season, Cathy announced that she would be resigning. Bonnie Pratt will now be in charge of the Sunday night entertainment schedule. Cathy did one fine job throughout the years and we sincerely thank her for all of her efforts. In the same thought, we wish Bonnie the best. Watch the special entertainment bulletin board at the front of the hall for future entertainers, date and time. Just a reminder. It is not too early to begin thinking about New Year’s Eve Dance and celebration so gather up your buddies for a fun filled evening. Tickets will be $30 per couple and will be on sale shortly. Be sure to keep watch for this event.A poster is located on the bulletin board in the back of the hall. During this past summer we lost several of our good friends. Our sympathy goes out to their families. Also, to those who are ill and not able to participate in our activities we wish you a speedy recovery. You are missed. On a lighter note, a celebration of 50 years of marriage took place for Harold and

Harold and Karen Heck celebrate their Golden Anniversary with friends and family at Palm View Gardens. (Photo courtesy of L. Warner)

Karen Heck recently. Many of their friends and family joined them for dinner at Maine-ly New England and then returned to the PVG Hall for cake and snacks. Our sincere congratulations to Harold and Karen for many more years to come. It should be noted that Harold and Karen have been married for 50 years and that they have lived in Palm View Gardens for 25 of those years. Thanks go out to their daughter Lynn and other family members for putting on such a lovely celebration for a terrific couple. Guess that is about it for this issue of the Park News. If you have anything “newsy” you would like me to include, please contact me. One last word to the wise: “You can’t reach 80 hale and hearty, by driving 80 home from the party.” Burma-Shave-1940

Cool weather, free turkey dinners and correspondents By Diane Kortus Publisher

Those of us who come from the north adore the cool weather of the past week. It was glorious going through the fall ritual of putting away sundresses, shorts and T-shirts and replacing them with sweaters, long sleeve shirts and corduroy pants. Heck, I even have a friend who put flannel sheets on her bed. Here at The Laker and Park News, about half of our staff comes from the north — Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Nebraska. No matter how many years we have lived in Florida, we still relish November’s drop in temperatures and subtle changes in color. Even my dogs have been a bit giddy on their walks, pulling at their leashes and urging me to pick up the pace as the cooler weather invigorates them. It is an interesting oxymoron that as we dream about wearing sweaters and scarves

our seasonal residents are arriving from the states we left behind praying for sunny days and 80 degrees so they can wear tank tops and flip flops. It doesn’t really matter whether it is tank top or sweater weather. November is the perfect backdrop for our annual Great Turkey Giveaway, which you will find on the next page. This is the third year Park News has sponsored this contest, which gives readers a very good chance of winning a turkey dinner for six from Sonny’s Bar-B-Q in Zephyrhills. The contest is a fun way to check out local businesses you may have missed before. Plus chances are pretty good that you could win because 14 local businesses are participating and every one will be drawing a winner from their entry box on Nov. 22. If you like contests with good odds, you’ll want to play our Great Turkey Giveaway. As publisher, I must admit that it is exciting that this Welcome Back issue of Park News is our biggest edition of the year. We have 36 pages of “up close and personal” news from our parks and lots of stories and lists of information to make your stay here fun and fulfilling. We have pages of things to

Lucy Powelson, resident at Betmar Park, stopped by her favorite repair shop, Bob’s Auto Repair in Zephyrhills, to drop off her entry in The Great Turkey Giveaway. Shop owner Kelli Lopez smiles from behind the counter. Drawings for 14 free turkey dinners from Sonny’s Bar-B-Q of Zephyrhills will be Nov. 22. (Photo by Tammy Sue Struble)

do, places to go, groups to join and churches to visit. We’ve designed this issue for you to hang onto all season long and we hope you do. I want to thank our many contributors to Park News, especially our correspondents who do such a fabulous job writing stories and sending us photos about the amazing events happening at our parks and the fascinating people who live there. Park News is a well-read publication because of the great contributions from our correspondents. I also want to thank the many small busi-

nesses that support Park News. These local stores and service companies gear up every year for the return of our seasonal residents. It’s their financial support that allows us to publish Park News between October and April. Our Park News staff hears all the time how much folks enjoy Park News. Often they ask how they can help. One big way is to patronize our advertisers. An easy way is to play the Great Turkey Giveaway and get to know the businesses that have products and services geared to seniors.

SOUTHERN CHARM

SOUTHFORK

M&Ms fill the need By Mary Ann Stephens Southern Charm

If you thought only the young, small kids went trick or treatin’ on Halloween, you found out that wasn’t the case in Southern Charm. The happy “older kids,” Jack and Kay Lynn Rider, dressed in M&M costumes and went begging. Every year, the Riders dress in their M&M costumes and give out bags of M&Ms to friends and neighbors in the park. This year, they made a slight change in their giving. Helpers Pearl Smith and Audrey Pitcher recently learned of the need for food items at Zephyrhills Neighborhood Care Center. Collecting food has always been an ongoing project at Southern Charm, but because the need is so great right now, the idea of begging for food on Halloween was formed. So this year. the Riders collected a food item in exchange for the M&Ms they gave out. Going door to door between 5 and 7 p.m. on Halloween, people were generous with their offering. Driving golf carts throughout the park, the carts quickly filled up with food items. Drivers Judy Linton, Pearl Smith and Audrey Pitcher made several trips back to unload. When finished, a total of 340 items were collected for the care center. There is a shortage in all food pantries

right now. With so many individuals out of work, the pantries may be their only source of food. If we are able to give back during these difficult times to those in need, let us do so. Southern Charm is thankful to have this couple plus the many other volunteers who give their time and energy to make our park what it is. During this Thanksgiving season, many Zephyrhills residents will be thankful to receive food for their Thanksgiving Dinner. Not only was it a good night for begging, it was a fun time to be a “little” kid again! Thanks, Southern Charm family, for coming through once again. And many thanks to Jack and Kay Lynn Rider, Judy Linton, Pearl Smith and Audrey Pitcher. PATIO NOW OPEN

A bevy of characters at Southfork By Jim Morvatz Southfork

It was a boo-ti-ful evening at Southfork when a group of characters descended on the clubhouse for an evening of festivities. There were cowboys, cowgirls, convicts, angels, doctors, demented patients, witches, goblins, gypsies, hippies, witches, wenches, pirates, an old geezer pretending to be a pumpkin and a rapper. The evening started off with vittles of beans and wienies, fried chicken, cole slaw, chips and soft drinks followed by some spook-tacular cake.

The party really got groovin’ with the Southfork Jammers taking center stage with a few rousing renditions of their favorite selections. The whole group was entertained by the Southfork Line Dancers followed by a skit including two of Southfork’s favorite cross-dressers who led the group in a SF favorite, “The Chicken Dance.”They went into the crowd to pick out some “victims” for an impromptu combination waltz, square dance and the bossa nova. No one qualified to make a guest appearance on “Dancing With The Stars.” Prizes were awarded to the funnies, silliest and scariest costumes.

Southfork maintenance staff members, Andrew Davidson, at left, and Dwayne Best, plant flowers and shrubs in front of the recently remodeled Southfork main entrance signs. The original signs had begun to deteriorate so the old wooden letters were stripped off the cement block structure and new stucco was applied to smooth out the face of the signs. The entire background was then painted and new architectural foam letters were applied. A crown molding was added to the curved section and capitols were applied to the tops of the columns. The recently remodeled signs add a classy touch to the already well-kept streets of Southfork and are expected to maintain their new look for several years to come. (Photo courtesy of Jim Morvatz)

History of Zephyrhills rich and plentiful By Kyle LoJacono

“This city is just rich in history that you can never know it all,” said Zephyrhills historian Madonna Wise.“I was so interested in When Howard Jeffries bought 35,000 the history that I wrote two books on it.” acres of land, he would not have been able Her first book is “Tapestry-Zephyrhills:An to envision what the area would be like 100 Anthology of its History Through Education,” years later. and the second is “Zephyrhills: Images of Today that land is the city of Zephyrhills, America,” which was released this year. which turned 100-years-old March 10, 2010. Before it became Zephyrhills, the area was called Abbott, named after a local doctor named J.M. Abbott. The word station was added to the town’s name after two train depots opened. Jeffries, who was a retired Union Army captain, first came to central Florida looking for a place to farm. “A lot of soldiers moved to Florida and started farms because Union Army pensions were small,” said Margie Partain, member of the Zephyrhills Historical Association. “They could get two harvests each The first Zephyrhills High School opened in September year, which many people could1910. (Photo courtesy of Madonna Wise) n’t pass up.” klojacono@cnewspubs.com

Howard Jeffries founded Zephyrhills on March 10, 1910. He is seen with his wife Helen. (File photo)

Jeffries bought the land in 1909 from James Lee Greer, who owned Greer Sawmill. Jeffries first planted the property in 1910. “The reason people say the town was founded in 1910 is because that’s when Capt. Jeffries divided up the land and started selling it to people,” Partain said. “That allowed other people to move to the area. You can’t very well have a town if no one can buy land and move in.” Zephyrhills was officially incorporated as a city in 1914 when the Zephyrhills Colony Company was formed. How the city got its name is not clear, but two main stories are generally accepted among the historical association. The first is

that there was a strong breeze on top of LeHeup Hill, which is where Jeffries signed the contract for the land. The word Zephyr actually means breezes, so the name Zephyrhills stuck. The other speculation is the first person to survey the city had either a first or last name of Hill. The city is not the only thing turning 100-years-old in 2010. The original Zephyrhills High School was founded in September 1910. It was first located on Gall Boulevard where the Clock Restaurant is today. It stayed there until 1926 when it moved to the present location of Raymond B. Stewart Middle School and finally to 12th Street.

What are you thankful for? With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us, we all look forward to sharing a scrumptious meal with our loved ones and friends. But what are we truly thankful for in our lives? Here are some of the responses we received when we asked readers and community members to complete the sentence “I am thankful for…” “...the foundation of faith and love my parents gave me to build my life upon. I have a wonderful husband of 26 years and love being the mom to three smart, generous, funny children.” –Mary Rathman, Park News editor “…Morningside friends that have become like family.” –Marlene Williams, Morningside “…life, as I am a cancer survivor. I am thankful for my husband as he is the best; our marvelous son and daughter, our daughter-in-law and son-in-law who we love as if they were our own children, our two grandsons who bring us so much joy and happiness and all our grand-animals on our farm.We are both thankful for this little three-legged cat, Willow, who belongs to

our neighbor Jean across the street because he keeps us from getting too lonesome for all the animals down on our farm. In this week of Remembrance we should all be thankful for our troops. They stand up for us and protect us from our enemies. Lastly I am thankful for our time at Sunnyside Park as we have lots of good friends here and several activities that keep us healthy, happy and young at heart.” –Jane Thertell, Sunnyside Park

“…the fact that I found such a nice place to live here in Florida. I moved to Southfork about three years ago when I retired and I could not be happier anywhere else. The community here is very active with many things to do everyday and the circle of friends that I have made here are beyond comparison. Happy Thanksgiving to all of the readers of the Park News.” –Jim Morvatz, Southfork

“…many things — a long life, good friends, a loving wife and a sense of purpose that I have accomplished something.” –Leo Sattler, Crystal Lake “…for being able to enjoy my later years living in a relatively wholesome town like Zephyrhills for the past 42 years. I’m thankful for the wonderful doctors and medical facilities that took care of my husband’s cancer problem. I’m thankful for our good friends, especially Ray and Clara, for giving us the opportunity to spend our summers living on their farm in Pennsylvania. How wonderful to enjoy the best of two worlds — north and south. And most of all, that we still have our freedom to live and worship as we choose.” –Lee Heffelfinger, Gem Estates “...the sound of my children arguing, it means that I am able to hear; my huge power bill, it means that we’ve been comfortable; our property taxes that are too high, it means I have a home; my clothes that are a bit too tight, it means I have had enough food to eat; the big mess I have to clean up after a party, it means I’ve been surrounded by loved ones; the alarm clock early in the morning, it means I’m alive to enjoy a new day.” –Melody Staving, co-chair Zephyrhills Relay for Life

“…being the owner of The Laker and Park News, which allows me to publish newspapers that give a voice to our community and to share with our readers compelling stories about our neighbors who care deeply for one another.” –Diane Kortus, publisher

Around 40 ladies gathered in the clubhouse at Sundance Park Nov. 8 for the monthly meeting and luncheon. Before the speakers, President Sara Lawson read an article about the history of Veteran’s Day. It was quite interesting, as we all know it was first known as Armistice Day honoring WWI veterans.Through the years, it was changed to Veteran’s Day honoring all veterans. Veteran’s Day is celebrated every year on Nov. 11 with ceremonies at 11 a.m. A Thanksgiving theme was used to decorate the tables, etc. A loaded potato/salad luncheon was organized and prepared by Connie Soule and her committee. Everyone enjoyed the luncheon. The business meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag led by Sara Lawson. The usual business meeting continued with Deb Cross, secretary, reading last month’s minutes as well as reading the treasurer’s report upon the absence of the treasurer. The meeting consisted of discussing the upcoming Health and Wellness Expo, as well as future events. The need for volunteers to read to children at the West Zephyrhills school was mentioned. Jean Popp reminded us to save box tops and labels for education. These items will be donated to that school. This is an ongoing project to help the school. It was also mentioned that there is a need for a volunteer to help in the school’s media center. New attendees, birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged. Connie Soule mentioned that there is an immediate need

for volunteers for each month’s food committee. These luncheons are prepared and served by these volunteers. There was a cancer donation table available with volunteers Dottie Mertz and Lucille Satterly accepting donations for that great cause. The Sundance Park Women’s Club of Zephyrhills will host a Christmas tree decorating party at 6 p.m. Nov. 21 to decorate the main tree in the clubhouse and a smaller tree in the lobby. The women’s club ladies will be donating cookies for the refreshments. The annual Christmas bazaar is from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Dec. 4. This is always a very large event for the women’s club. There will be baked goods, crafts, books, white elephants and the usual table with donated items to be won by some lucky individuals. This event is open to the public and welcomes all people in surrounding communities. Ladies will be decorating and filling Christmas bags for the kindergarten students Dec. 2. These bags will be passed out to the children in our meeting Dec. 13.At this meeting, the kindergarten children from West Zephyrhills Elementary School will be present to entertain us with Christmas music, etc. There are many exciting speakers lined up for the New Year; a class in self-defense in February and a presentation about a trip to Haiti in March. There will be a Heart Healthy Eating seminar March 3.The speaker will be explaining how to read food labels. This will be very helpful information to aid in proper healthy eating. All ladies of Sundance Mobile Home Park are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings and activities.

Health and Wellness Expo a success Over 80 people from Sundance Park participated in the Health and Wellness Expo provided by East Pasco Medical Center and sponsored by the Women’s Club of Sundance Park Nov. 9. A big thank you to Katie Bryant, marketing coordinator from Pasco Medical Center, and club president, Sara Lawson, for their work in organizing the event. The plan is to have this as an annual event at the park. There were 32 vendors and people were able to get blood pressure checks, check out healthcare facilities,YMCA programs, food programs and more. Door prizes were awarded to various winners and refreshments were available. Hourly seminars were offered so people could pick and choose what class to attend for their individual interests. SUNNYSIDE PARK

Put on your game face By Jane Thertell Sunnyside Park

More activities have started in our park. Bingo continues every Monday night at 6:30 p.m. and all are welcome. Euchre started on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. and 15 people came down to the clubhouse to play.Tannis Jackson got the highest score for the women and Bill Wright had the highest men’s score. Throughout the summer the park has had a morning get-together for coffee and donuts each Tuesday morning. Hopefully now that our president has arrived in the

park, we will have a meeting next time around. There was a lot of activity at our pool when the temperature was in the 80s, but now that it has dropped down into the 50s, activities there will probably come to a standstill. Cribbage should start on Wednesday nights. Shuffleboard will probably start up when more players return to the park for the winter. We hope to start bridge soon in the clubhouse. Well that is all the news.Till next time…

Winters Park Shuffleboard Club is now back in session. Tom Churchill and Wayne Church looked after the courts beautifully during the summer months. I would like to extend my thanks to both of these gentlemen who did a great job. One set of blocks was cleaned last year and have been working extremely well over the summer season. It is our intention to have the remainder cleaned this year to have them all run the same. David and Dini Rushton of Winter’s Park went to Germany this summer for eight days of shuffling with the International Shuffleboard Association. The shuffleboard venue in Honanroda, Germany was awesome. The hotel was one of the top ten conference centers in Germany and has well earned its good name. The meals were out of this world with everything from veni-

son to wild boar for dinner, and the noon meals that they said would be light lunches consisted of a buffet comparable to Golden Corral. So, we spent the three weeks in England eating! The American men took first place in the world tournament and Canadian men took second place. The Canadian women took first place. David Earle, who learned to shuffle in Winters Park under the tutelage of Marshall and Dee Leigh, went undefeated in the world tournament and was the only person to do so this year. The ISA singles will take place next summer in Dieppe, New Brunswick, Canada. Betmar Acres hosted the singles last year and it was a great success. We will be having the ladies shuffling on Thursday morning, and lessons will be given if there are enough people wanting to learn the great game of shuffleboard. Shuffleboard will be played every day a 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 23.The Golden Corral Shuffleboard Tournament is Nov. 18 and 19 and lunch can be purchased at the activities hall on the 18th. (Submitted by Wilma Eshenour)

Zephyrhills swells as seasonal residents start migration By B.C. Manion bcmanion@cnewspubs.com

Every year, about this time, the population of Zephyrhills begins to swell. At first, it is barely noticeable. There are few more cars on the road and some recreational vehicles begin to show up bearing Michigan or Minnesota tags. They may arrive in a trickle, but by the end of the year thousands of seasonal residents will have settled into the city’s plentiful mobile home and RV parks. “The population rises to anywhere between 85,000 and 90,000 in the greater Zephyrhills area up from around 50,000. It almost doubles,’’ said Vonnie Mikkelsen, executive director of the Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce. “I look at our community calendar in October and November and it is packed with activities. People are coming back. The traffic picks up. Businesses start ringing in more dollars, and then events just start happening all over,” she said. Jen Tuttle, manager at the Golden Corral at 6855 Gall Blvd., is familiar with the annual influx. “We look forward to it. We certainly appreciate our local regulars, but definitely the winter residents help support the business. I would say our volume doubles.”

In a normal week, the restaurant’s salad bar goes through about seven cases of lettuce. “I would say we go through another seven or eight cases a week when we’re in full swing with the Northerners,”Tuttle said. Steve Lopez, general manager at Pin Chasers, at 6816 Gall Blvd., said the winter residents make a huge difference for the bowling alley too. “Our daytime business, as you can see right now, is slow. In another month-and-ahalf we’ll be full during the daytime, Monday through Friday, with senior park groups,” Lopez said. He estimates as many as 750 people join the daytime leagues during the winter. “We obviously enjoy having them here. We have some events that cater to them, and we cater to their individual communities,” Lopez said. Christine Winters, of Winters Mobile Home Park, has been watching the annual migration of seasonal residents for more than 40 years. Her father-in-law bought the mobile home park in 1952, and before that it was Eastman’s Trailer Park. The park, at 38022 Winter Drive, has 270 rental spaces. Its seasonal residents come from Quebec, Nova Scotia and Alberta, Canada, as well as Minnesota, Michigan and

other northern states. They typically begin showing up around the middle to the end of October and stick around until about the beginning of April, she said. Once they arrive, they get busy with card games, coffee hours, exercise classes and dances at the mobile home park’s recreation hall and in games on its shuffleboard court, Winters said. Their presence is also noticeable around the city, she said. “You can tell a difference in the winter time,”Winters said, particularly at the local

churches and restaurants. “Most of the churches here put on an extra service.” Dawn Smith, an assistant manager at the Twistee Treat at 36305 SR 54, loves seeing the flock of winter residents arrive.“We stay busy pretty much all day in the winter time,” she said. The ice cream stand starts getting busier in December and gets busier each month through March. Some of the people who start out as winter residents decide to become full-time residents of Zephyrhills, said Bryan Toll, who is one of them. Toll is the activities director at Betmar, 37145 Lakewood Drive, the city’s largest mobile home park. For years he and his wife, Donna Sue, made the annual trek south from their home in Indiana. In 2006, they decided to settle in Florida full-time. Now,Toll keeps busy at the mobile home park, which has more than 30 clubs including everything from bridge club to bingo, shuffleboard to Bible study, computer club to cribbage. He estimates that roughly one-quarter to one-third of Betmar’s residents live there year-round, with the rest coming for the winter. They begin arriving in October and generally stay until spring. Some come down, return to their other home for the holidays and then return.
