Sparks fly as Karyn Adamek grinds the surface of a rusted railroad spike as she works to create Fancy Dancer, an equestrian metal sculpture. Smoothing metal surfaces is a basic part of the artist’s job. “You can’t weld rust on rust,” Adamek explains, as she prepares the surface for welding. “Since I work with found metal objects, everything is usually rusted. So, I try to get it into some welding condition,” she said. The makings for her artworks include brake pads, nails, hammers, nuts, bolts, screws, springs, sheet metal, horseshoes, rods and other items. The stuff comes from all sorts of places. Flea markets. Thrift stores. Friends’ yards. Even from junk piles Karyn Adamek is careful to protect herself when she welds her metal sculptures. (Photos by Glenn Geffers of she sees on the side of the road. All of the railroad spikes in www.photosby3g.com) Fancy Dancer, for instance, came from an abandoned railroad track on a friend’s private land. “They had torn up some track on his property and it was in a big pile rotting away,” said Adamek, 52. “Most of the stuff that I work with – that’s what is happening to it. So, I recreate it and reincarnate it. Certain pieces of metal will inspire me to make a certain creation,” she said. Recently, she spied a metal chair that had been set out for trash collectors. She plucked it up and gave it new life. She turned it into a plant holder and took it to sell at Annie’s Garden Shed in Lutz, where she works part-time. Carolyn and Joe Sentelik of Zephyrhills had just bought a boat and were scouting out a marina where they could use it. They decided they would spend part of their Sunday just watching boaters at a marina and then grab a bite to eat. They had intended to go to Clearwater, but while en route decided instead to go to Dunedin. “There’s some sort of divine intervention as to why it happened the way it did,” Joe said. “I think things happen for a reason,” Carolyn agreed. The couple had spent some time on the morning of Aug. 29 looking at boats and watching people launch them, before heading to Bon Appetit Restaurant for lunch, Carolyn said. They had just ordered their drinks when they heard a terrible noise, she said. “We heard a screech and a thump. It was a very odd sound,” she said. It was the kind of sound that signals “something very, very horrible had happened.” “We heard a woman scream, “Someone call 911.” Joe, a former police officer, didn’t hesitate. He took off running toward the sound, and when he got there, he saw a 1995 white Mercury Marquis had plunged over the seawall into the water. The driver was 89-year-old Joseph Schlesselman, who was accompanied by his 86-year-old wife, Ruth. As the car began to sink, Joe Sentelik dove into the water to attempt a rescue.Another man also jumped in, and as both men attempted to get into the sinking car, a third man with a boat came along and hurled a fire extinguisher through the rear window – creating a hole the size of a dinner plate, Carolyn said. Hillsborough fixes school calendar again By Elizabeth Gwilt Special to The News
Admitting to an oversight, the Hillsborough County School Board last week made yet more changes to the school calendar. After the board passed a new calendar earlier this month that included 15 early release days and a last day of school that fell on a Monday, members met again to edit the calendar. Fearing a large percentage of absences, members approved a compromise that pushes the last day of school up to a
Friday, June 10. And in response to parental backlash about the early release days, the board also slashed two from the slate, leaving 12 days in which students will depart two hours early. On the last day of school, students are dismissed 2 1/2 hours early. The board will also turn Feb. 11, the Florida State Fair student holiday, into a teacher workday. Hillsborough High School sophomore Manash Ramanathan, of Lutz, is satisfied with the board’s decision. “It was smart of them to move the last day to a Friday. There’s no way anyone

Collier Parkway 200 days from completion By Kyle LoJacono klojacono@cnewspubs.com
The stalled and long awaited extension to Collier Parkway began to move forward when the Pasco County Commission approved a contract with a replacement contractor. Ripa & Associates was picked to complete the project that has been in limbo since the county fired WDG Construction from the job in February. The job was about 40 percent complete at that time. The company resumed work on the road this week and is scheduled for completion in less than 200 days, according to Chris Laface, Ripa’s executive vice president. “The project still has a long way to go,” Laface said. “We should be finished by March or April of next year.” The project was first scheduled for completion in May. The original contract with WDG was for $4.3 million to extend Collier from where it stops a Hale Road 1.8 miles north to connect with Parkway Boulevard.

A future project will further extend Collier to connect with Ehren Cutoff, but Deborah Bolduc, program administrator for Pasco’s engineering services, said it will not be planned until 2013 or 2014 and will not be completed until at least 2015 or 2016. WDG stopped work on the project in part because it lost some of its insurance coverage.About $2.5 million remains on the contract. Zephyrhills Bypass promises a more connected Pasco By Kyle LoJacono klojacono@cnewspubs.com
Those driving through the eastern edge of the construction zone to widen SR 54 may have noticed what looks like another road headed toward Zephyrhills. What they are seeing is the future Zephyrhills Bypass, which will make travel easier between the east Pasco County city and the rest of the county. “This is one of the biggest road projects in the history of the county,” said James Widman, Pasco chief engineer.“For now we are planning for it to be done in three phases and that portion near Curley (Road) is the first.”
The final plans for the Bypass are not set in stone as its completion will not be until at least 2016, but the overall plan is as follows. The highway’s construction starts where SR 54 turns south just east of Curley. A fourlane highway will be built through the northern edge of New River Town Center and Harrison-Bennett commercial development in Wesley Chapel. The width will be reduced to two lanes through the more rural areas to the east. It will connect with Eiland Boulevard near Handcart Road in Zephyrhills. The construction is projected at nearly $12 million plus $2.5 million each for design and engineering and right-of-way land acquisition. The second and third parts will widen
that case it would be the new (SR) 54 and the county would take control of the existing portion of (SR) 54.” Widman said if FDOT takes control of the bypass project, the county would continue the widening of the existing SR 54 to US 301 in Zephyrhills. If not then FDOT would do the widening of the existing SR 54 instead. “Everyone at the county’s economic development council wants easier ways to connect Zephyrhills, Dade City,Wesley Chapel and the rest of east Pasco with areas to the west,” said John Hagen, Pasco’s president of economic development.“…A connected Pasco is a more economically viable Pasco.”
Eiland to US 301. Several million dollars have already been paid for the project, which brings the total projected cost at more than $50 million. Construction would be completed for the first two phases between 2016 and 2017, while the third will be finished in 2019 or 2020, according to Deborah Bolduc, program administrator for Pasco’s engineering services. There is still the possibility that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will step in and change the county’s plan for the bypass. “We are actually hoping FDOT takes jurisdiction of the Zephyrhills Bypass and do the project themselves,” Widman said. “In

Volunteer drivers give a lift to people afflicted by cancer By B.C. Manion
Nethery said part of the problem in attracting volunteers is that many people assume it requires a substantial time commitment, but that’s not the case. “When we go to recruit these volunteers, we try to make it very clear to them that we don’t have any expectations about the number of days in a week that they drive,”she said. If a volunteer can only help one morning a week, between 9 a.m. and noon, that’s fine, she said. They may also want to limit where they drive, she said. For instance, some may prefer driving only to nearby treatment centers. The volunteers simply need to let the coordinator know when and where they can drive, and the coordinator will match them with a patient. Volunteers do not need to worry that they will have to give up their other activities, Nethery said. The program is very flexible. “We are very challenged right now, especially in Pasco County, to find new drivers,” she said. The program helps reduce the stress of caregivers, Moorman said. “The only bad thing is that they need more people.” The need is great, Nethery said. “A lot of patients are too ill to drive. They’re too elderly to drive. At this time, right now, they’re economically challenged,” she said. Some don’t have a car, don’t have money for gas or can’t afford to register their car, she added. When a cancer patient needs a ride, they just need to get in touch with the American Cancer Society, Nethery said.An assessment will be done to be sure that are no other means of transportation. Patients participating in the program must be able to walk on their own, Nethery

Eileen Moorman suffers from fibromyalgia, a condition that is debilitating and unpredictable. “I’m not reliable,” the Land O’ Lakes woman said. That’s why she’s so grateful for the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program. Moorman said her mother has colon cancer and experiences confusion. Moorman relies on volunteers to take her mother to her chemotherapy treatments near the University of South Florida. Rob Roberts, a 67-year-old retired tax manager for the Florida Department of Revenue, is one of the volunteers who give cancer patients rides to their chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The Lutz man began volunteering about 18 months ago, after reading a notice in a newspaper seeking volunteer drivers. “I just wanted to do something to help others,” Roberts said.“It’s quite a good feeling to know that I’m doing something for others, rather than just sitting around.” More volunteers are needed, said Nancy Nethery, a patient services manager for the American Cancer Society. Currently, there are nine volunteer drivers to cover Pasco County and 21 to cover Hillsborough County, Nethery said. The organization has set a goal of 50 volunteer drivers for Pasco and 75 for Hillsborough. The program is simple, Nethery said. Volunteer drivers come to a short training session, which lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. Then, a volunteer coordinator pairs up drivers who are willing to help with patients who need a ride.

Coastal Cleanups extend beyond shorelines Volunteers to beautify Land O’ Lakes and Lutz By Kyle LoJacono klojacono@cnewspubs.com
For the last 25 years people have been participating in the International Coastal Cleanup each September to protect the planet’s waterways. That effort transformed into on overall cleanup effort of all outdoor areas and several groups will be participating in north Hillsborough and central Pasco counties.

“It’s the largest volunteer effort to help protect the oceans, lakes and rivers,” said Jennifer Seney, Pasco County’s recycling coordinator. “More than 7.8 million people have removed more than 135 million pounds of trash from the shoreline since it started 25 years ago.” The first Coastal Cleanup in Pasco was 23 years ago, according to Seney. About 500,000 volunteers removed 7.4 million pounds of trash around the world last year. This year in Pasco, the event will be from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 18. The first inland event in Pasco was in Land O’ Lakes and its original organizers, Betsy Crisp and Kurt Conover, have participated in all 21 of them. Crisp said the Land O’ Lakes site has about 500 volunteers each year, making it the largest Pasco site. “Last year, we picked up 6.25 percent (one ton) of the total 16.1 tons collected that day,” Crisp said.“We had 429 volunteers in 38 teams turn out, 30.5 percent of the 1,400 total volunteers county-wide.” Before 1990, the cleanups were only on Pasco’s Gulf coast. At that time, Joanne Hurley was the county’s recycling coordinator and worked to bring the project inland to help the rivers and lakes.

Jewish faithful celebrate High Holy Days By Molly McGowan
ourselves and repent for the new year.” He explains that while the Holy Day is about atonement, it is not simply a one-time chance to make up for all the mistakes one has made. The first step, he says, is to approach the people wronged and make amends.“Then being in Synagogue is the icing on the cake, a chance to work things out with God.” Since Yom Kippur is a 25-hour period generally spent in synagogue and fasting, Congregation Beth Am will hold a service the evening of Friday, Sept. 17 and will have multiple services on Saturday, Sept. 18.As one of the holiest days of the year in the Jewish faith, Rosenberg expects a large turnout. “It’s the busiest time of the year, for sure,” he said. Associate Rabbi Larry Johnson of the Shoresh David Messianic Synagogue in Wesley Chapel said he, too, expects to see a large congregation for Yom Kippur services, though the heavy downpours last week thinned attendance for Rosh Hashana.

On a rainy Wednesday night, temples throughout the region — and the world — reverberated with the sounds of shofar trumpets blowing, celebrating Rosh Hashana and ushering in the fall season. The shofar, usually made of a ram’s horn, is traditionally sounded during Rosh Hashana to serve as a wakeup call to Jewish followers, encouraging them to shatter complacency and prepare for the Day of Atonement,Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish faith. Rosh Hashana began at sundown Wednesday, Sept. 8 and Yom Kippur will begin the evening of Friday, Sept. 17. Rabbi Jason Rosenberg of Congregation Beth Am, a reform synagogue in Tampa, says that one of the ways his congregation honors the High Holy Days is by making the special services particularly beautiful.“We welcome the new year together,” Rosenberg says, and Yom Kippur is “where we focus on
Those who did brave the rain, however, took part in a very special “Shofar Service,” where liturgical readings and prayers were punctuated by the sounds of trumpets blowing. Johnson explains that Rosh Hashana is the “feast of trumpets” in Leviticus, and the shofars help to remind followers that the archangel will come at the sound of trumpets.“No man knows the time, or the day, or the hour,” Johnson said.“But we’re to know the season.” Another special highlight of the service was the reading of the Torah, which was first taken out of its ark and carried through the congregation by Kelsie Buller. He says he has never before had the privilege of carrying Shoresh David’s torah, which is over 400 years old and is originally from Kelsie Buller carrying the Torah during Rosh Hashana services at Shoresh David Messianic Poland. Buller, who has been attending Synagogue in Wesley Chapel. (Photos by Shoresh David for the past few years, Molly McGowan) said he was “an eager and willing participant,” adding that since the congregation explaining that seasons and the High Holy is small, the torah usually only comes out on Days were designated as specific times to reHigh Holy Days. member God, and relates it to a courtship. 9/11 riders celebrate freedom Photos by Glenn Gefers of www.photosby3g.com
Hundreds of riders hit the streets of Pasco and Hillsborough counties on Saturday, Sept. 11 to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Dan Turner, part of the organizing group Pasco County Choppers, said the goal was to “visit local firefighters in remembrance of all those who lost their lives on Sept. 11.”
At Firehouse 23, Michael Plate attaches the American flag to the boom of his company’s fire truck so that those fallen heroes can be remembered in a moment of silence at the time of the first attack on the World Trade Center.
More than 300 bikers met on Saturday behind the Big Lots in Land O’ Lakes to be part of a 9/11 tribute ride throughout the region.
Riders and firefighters gather at Firehouse 37. From left: Chris Councilor holding Jackson and Maya Councilor; Fire Chief Mark Spudie; Rick Rodriguez; Dan and Cheryl Turner; Robert Iglesias; firefighter David Schaffer; Joe Donahue; Carla Austin; and firefighter Quinn Byrd.

Pasco County Firehouse 23 was the start zone for the ride, aimed at helping to remember those who gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Here are some of the county’s recommendations: Develop a family plan. Know how you will respond should a disaster be declared or an evacuation recommendation given.Time is of the essence, so you should plan ahead so you’ll know what to do. Assemble an emergency kit. It should include your medications, important papers, items to occupy your time, and some clean clothing. Know your evacuation zone. There are five designated evacuation levels that are vulnerable to storm surge. Know if you live in one of these zones and have a plan for where you will go, if you need to evacuate. Be aware that everyone living in a mobile home must evacuate at all evacuation levels. Plan to have enough food, drink and medicine to last at least three to five days after a disaster hits. The roads may be blocked by debris and water and sewer and power may be knocked out by storm damage. If you have physical or mental conditions that require special care, be sure to pre-register for a Special Needs (Medical) Shelter, where professional medical care can be provided during the emergency. Have a plan for your pet. A Fritz Institute Survey found that 44 percent of the people who did not evacuate for Hurricane Katrina stayed, at least in part, because they did not want to leave their pets behind. Call your county’s emergency management office to find out where the pet shelters are in your jurisdiction. There are four pet-friendly shelters in Hillsborough County. The Institute for Business & Home Safety also offers a number of suggestions for ways that business and homeowners can prepare their property to better withstand natural disasters. For a list of ways to harden your home or business against natural disasters, go to DisasterSafety.org and click on the “Get Prepared tab.

Free Community Lectures Fighting Flu Season
It’s midway through this year’s hurricane season and so far, Floridians have been lucky. No major threats have forced wide-scale evacuations or caused people to board their windows, fill up their gas tanks and get out their generators. But that doesn’t mean that residents should treat potential threats casually. “We always fear complacency, said Zoe Boyer, a project manager for the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes.“That’s when you get caught off-guard. The alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting disaster safety and property loss mitigation, offers a wealth of information aimed at helping homeowners to help themselves. Go to www.flash.org to watch how-to videos and to learn ways to better protect your home and property. It may be too late this year to make substantial changes to fortify your home, but there are ways to reduce potential damages. It’s a good idea to inspect your trees to see if any have insect damage or weak branches that need to be trimmed, Boyer said.“Look for anything that is dead, a crack in the trunk, insect infestation, she advised. If a hurricane threatens, be sure to move your lawn furniture and pool equipment into a place where it can’t become airborne and pose a danger to people or property, Boyer said. The Hillsborough County Commission has proclaimed September as National Preparedness Month. Historically, records show that September is the peak month for hurricane activity. Nov. 30 marks the end of hurricane season. Hillsborough commissioners want to remind residents to take precautionary steps to help them weather the storm, if one should hit here.

In my 30 years of practicing criminal law, I’ve dealt with a wide variety of personalities and personality disorders. I am one of very few people who have actually sat down, face-to-face, with a person whom I know to be a killer. Not someone you think is a little kinky. Or even someone you believe to be so weird as to possibly be an R/M (My wife’s term: Rapist/Murderer.). But someone known to be, accused and convicted of actually taking other people’s lives, a murderer. We’re a small group - homicide detectives, psychiatrists, defense attorneys and the like. As an assistant public defender, and later as a court-appointed alternative to the PD’s office, I represented people who had killed other people. That’s usually the way it works. Most people charged with that serious of a crime can’t afford to hire a lawyer. Unless you’re O. J. Simpson, or otherwise have a ton of money, you get a court-appointed lawyer. And there’s nothing wrong with that from either point-of-view, but that’s another article. Some of my murder cases were a “heat of passion” type thing. Others were love triangles that ended badly. Some were just stupid. And then there were the “serial murderers.” Before Oscar Ray Bolin — and much more prolific as far as we know — there was Bobby Joe Long. And why do mass murderers always have 3 names? But I digress. I was one of two attorneys in the Pasco/Pinellas Public Defender’s Office who represented Bobby Joe in his first of nine confessed-to murder charges in the Tampa Bay area following his arrest in 1984. The reason I started thinking about this recently was a series of stories on ABC’s Nightline Prime that included a piece about brain damage from injury or birth that seemed to be a common denominator among sociopathic murderers. The show featured studies on convicted murderers who showed no sign of remorse or of
even having a conscience and the way they cavalierly killed. When I represented Bobby Joe, there were also signs of brain damage.Although he had a difficult childhood and an extra X chromosome, he was only marginally criminal before an accident that caused some damage to his brain and, after which, his behavior changed drastically. For one thing, his libido and sex drive went through the roof, according to his exwife. It was also about then that his criminality escalated, over time, from mere “contract disputes” with prostitutes to rape and murder. As his defense team, we tried every avenue, including the brain damage route. We had an expert who studied serial killers and their brains examine him and testify. As far as I know, she still wants to examine his brain after death, especially since it will no longer be fried in “old Sparky,” but instead, poisoned and presumably, pickled and preserved. Nowadays, according to the ABC story, MRIs and other advanced imaging techniques are able to do a virtual “dissection” of the brain of the living and seem to show deficiencies in the same area among convicted murderers. I have no doubt that Bobby Joe has some serious brain malfunctions and so do many murderers, but should that be a defense, much less, an excuse? But here’s a better question: One of the scientists studying this issue, is, I kid you not, Lizzie Borden’s distant cousin, and he has the same brain deficiency as the mass murderers that he is studying. But he’s never committed a violent crime and is a loving and attentive son, sibling and parent. But what about that brain pattern and his genetics? Is it nature or nurture, or both? Shouldn’t we keep an eye on him? Maybe lock him down? Get some DNA from him and others we think might be a risk? It’s a slippery slope and we know so little about it. The more we know, the more that we know we don’t know. Sounds Rumsfeldian, don’t it?

The funny thing is that I went to Pizza Villa because someone suggested I feature their roasted vegetable dish, which sounded great because it was a huge bowl of assorted roasted vegetables with olive oil that I could eat instead of pizza. Pizza Villa put it up on their menu, but doesn’t necessarily advertise it as a healthy dish. Although it sounds healthy, this is a perfect example of a dangerous concoction of calories when it is prepared the way it is. It is actually a delicious dish, but the problem is that the healthy content of the vegetables is wasted away on the massive olive oil they are drenched in, which is too bad. Even if you scooped the vegetables out of the oil and ate only half of it, you’d be consuming at least 30 grams of fat! However, I tried a dish that I can recommend to you —pizza on pita bread crust topped with vegetables. You may already know from my other reviews that I am a fan of pizza although I developed distaste for white flour. It’s odd because foods cooked with white flour started to taste “pasty” when I would eat them and I was shocked; this happened because I was raised on white flour. This was the reason I discarded my old favorite:a personal pan – deep-dish-type pizza. To make this pizza healthier, I had them go easy on the cheese to cut the fat in half,

not add fattening meat like sausage and pepperoni and add veggies such as tomatoes, green peppers and mushrooms. I was happy with the outcome because it was absolutely delicious! It was nice eating a thin-crust pizza that didn’t taste weird like the personal pan white dough. If you order it with less cheese and no fattening meat, you are looking at around 400 calories, which is perfect for one meal. Or you could be really disciplined and get a small salad and eat only half of the pizza and save the rest for later. I dare you to try having half that pizza and a salad but say, “No, thanks”to the feta cheese on the salad unless you can discipline yourself and have only a little. Order it on the side. AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS
LOL Transport & Moving gets big thank you
Princess likes to hunt lizards Princess is almost 1-year-old and a wire-haired Dachshund. She is very friendly but a ferocious lizard hunter. She enjoys play fighting with her “brother,” a 2-year-old smooth, red Dachshund. She also loves to snuggle with her family and long walks. She has quite an appetite for dog treats. Princess’ proud owners are the McGuire Family, Marv, Victoria, Marvin, Tanner, Sofia and Chloe of Land O’ Lakes.
Chris Weller (l), parent volunteer for the Sunlake High School Band, presents LOL Transport & Moving owners, Rene and Wes Van Hout, with a plaque that reads "Thank you for your support. We would have been nowhere without you.” Sunlake High School is new and the band hasn't had enough time to raise funds for a trailer to transport band equipment. They were stuck with the inconvenience and expense of a rental truck that they could barely afford. The owners of LOL Transport & Moving heard of the band's troubles and offered their trailer for free. "With the school district cutting the budget more and more, we just had to do something. Our daughter, Robin, is a band member at Land O Lakes High. We see how hard they work and struggle to put on such wonderful performances," stated Rene Van Hout. “I feel so different than I did two years ago. My body now craves healthy food instead of sweets and junk food. I’ve maintained my weight loss for 30 months and it’s become pretty easy because I am in control of myself and like the person I’ve become. I USED to go shopping to look for clothes that would make me look good. But guess what – nothing really did. I had to change my body to do that. I am in the BEST shape of my life. Your health affects your moods, emotions, energy. As women, we look after everyone else in our lives before we look after ourselves. But if you don’t also take care of yourself, you won’t have much left over to give to others. And you won’t feel good about yourself physically or emotionally. When I finally called Samantha in March of 2007, it was after reading her
articles in the paper for many years. I was in the worst shape of my life physically and it was affecting me on many levels – my health, mentally, emotionally and in my relationships. I tried to lose weight MANY times but I could never keep the pounds off. I would always go back to my old way of eating and the weight would come back on – and more. Calling Samantha was the best decision I’ve ever made. I needed help to change. Samantha told me if I put time and effort in her plan, it would work. After seven months of following Samatha’s program, I had lost 55 lbs and 7 sizes and have kept it off for almost 3 years! Thanks Samantha!”

Veterans urged to claim benefits U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor is urging local veterans, military personnel and beneficiaries of service members who were involuntarily extended on active duty between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009, to apply for retroactive supplemental payment. Although thousands of veterans nationwide are eligible for these payments, many benefits have gone unclaimed, according to national news reports.
Castor is calling on the community to help spread the word to ensure that military personnel and veterans receive the benefits they are due. “The Tampa Bay community values the service and sacrifice of our veterans, military and their families,” Castor states in a news release issued by her office. “For many, the involuntary extension known as ‘stop-loss’ was a significant disrup-
tion in their lives,” Castor says.“They are due a $500 per month extra payment, but many have not applied. Family members, churches, veterans’ organizations and neighbors should proactively inquire on behalf of veterans and service members they know.” Stop loss refers to a practice of the military to force troops to serve beyond their separation date. Those wishing to claim the retroactive payments must submit a claim by Oct. 21. “Unfortunately, many service members and
veterans have missed letters informing them of retroactive pay or think it is a scam,” Castor states. “The retroactive pay is not a scam.’ She encourages veterans to seek more information about benefits they are entitled to receive. More information about eligibility can be found at the Department of Defense website, www.defense.gov/stoploss. Veterans with questions or needing help to sort through the process are encouraged to call Castor’s office at (813) 871-2817.

METAL, from page 1 “They’re a little surreal in a way, in that they are not exactly proportioned, she said. She also makes the horse in a modular form, so the head and the tail come off. That makes it easier to transport if she’s taking one to an art show, or if one of her patrons wants to move the horse into a different place in the yard. Adamek also makes much smaller versions of horses and other sculptures, and she makes functional art, too. For instance, she made a round table from a circular piece of glass, supported by three giant leaves that she cut from metal and bent to hold up the glass. Through the years,Adamek has explored several artistic mediums including throwing clay, painting and doing sculpture, stained glass and murals. She doesn’t use mechanical drawings to create her metal art, but instead works from sketches, photographs and paintings. When she is welding or grinding metal, she is careful to protect herself. She wears gloves, a helmet, long pants, boots and a fire retardant shirt. She also uses good tools to help prevent injuries. Adamek said she comes by her love of metal work naturally. “My grandfather worked at J & L Steel in Pittsburgh, she said.“That’s where I grew up. “My dad was an amazing auto body man. He made things in our driveway that looked like they came out of the factory. The artist did not fully appreciate her father’s or grandfather’s skills when she was

young. Indeed, it was just a few years ago when she studying welding that she realized the opportunities she had missed. She laments the fact that she did not recognize their talents and did not tap into their expertise while they were alive. “They had all of this knowledge. I didn’t even pay attention to it,â€? Strange as it may seem, her work with hard metals began with an interest in gardening. Adamek was studying horticulture when someone handed her a topiary book. She decided she wanted to learn how to weld, so she could create topiaries – which are metal structures designed to support plants. It was like an entirely new world had opened up for her. She went from learning how to weld at a trade school into working in the real world as a volunteer at a shop in Channelside where they make gates and railings. She wanted to hang out at the shop so she could learn more about working with metals. Gradually, she began buying pieces of equipment and creating her workshop at home. She still makes topiaries, but has branched out into all sorts of garden dĂŠcor, yard art and creative pieces intended for juried art shows. She won an honorable mention at the Wesley Chapel Celebration of the Arts, a show sponsored last year by the Wesley Chapel Chamber at the Shops at Wiregrass. At the 43rd Annual Fine Arts for Ocala, she won best of show, picking up $3,000 in prize money. Prices for her pieces range from around $75 to more than $5,000 for the large equestrian pieces.Adamek also does custom work on request. While her love for gardening led her onto a new path,Adamek still enjoys working with plants and creating artworks that go well in gardens. “Plants and metals – I like those two mediums,â€? she said. BOATER, from page 1 “I could see a person in the car, in the front, Carolyn said.“I thought I was going to see a man die right in front of me. It made me feel sick. After the fire extinguisher broke through the window, Joe used his hand and his fist to break away enough glass to get his body through, Carolyn said. Once he got in, he tried unlocking the backseat doors, but was only able to get the backseat door on the passenger seat unlocked. “It was chaotic and crazy and traumatic, Carolyn said. “He went down three times, she said, tugging at the driver – but couldn’t get him loose. “I was screaming for him to get out. I was afraid he was going to be killed, Carolyn said. She was especially worried because Joe suffered a heart attack in May and because he’s on blood thinners, he was bleeding profusely from cuts that he got from the glass. Joe said everything happened so quickly he’s not sure exactly who did what. He knows another rescuer was able to get in and to cut the driver and his wife free from their seatbelts. That man also helped to push the driver out of the car, and Joe pulled the driver out the rest of the way – loading him onto a nearby boat. Someone else pulled the woman to safety. The elderly woman was so small, Carolyn didn’t even realize there was anyone else in the car. Once the couple was safe, Joe used a rope to pull himself out of the water. He cut his feet on the barnacles as he climbed the marina wall. There was blood gushing everywhere, Carolyn said.“It was kind of gory. After the rescue, the driver told deputies he had pulled into a handicapped parking space and his foot slipped from the brake pedal onto the gas, causing the car to plunge into the water, according to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office report. The report also identified the other rescuers. They were Eric Corum, 42, of Tarpon Springs and Courtney Douthit, 32, of Dunedin. Once they were out of the water, the couple was transported to Mease Dunedin Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Joe was taken to the same hospital, where emergency room personnel scrubbed out the tiny pieces of glass that were embedded in his skin, and used tweezers to take out the larger pieces. Carolyn said they received a thank you note from the couple’s son. The Aug. 31 letter, from James J. Schlesselman, of Pittsburgh, Pa., expressed deep appreciation from himself and his brother. In part, it notes that without the rescuers’ intervention,“Our mom and dad would have undergone a terrifying death, drowning while trapped in their car under water. “I’m just glad they’re all right, Joe said. “For the last 10 seconds their heads were under water. The rescuers barely got the couple out before the car was totally submerged. The entire rescue probably lasted about three minutes, he said. Carolyn, executive director of the Florida Hospital Zephyrhills Foundation, said she told Joe:“You are a much better person than I could ever hope to be because I’m not sure I could do what you did. She’s still in awe.“It was incredible,’’ she said. By the way, over Labor Day weekend the Senteliks took their 22-foot angler out for their first spin. They launched it from the Dunedin Marina.

It doesn’t take long to realize that A Cup of Organic, a coffee shop in Lutz, isn’t your typical place to get a cup of Joe or a fancy coffee drink. There’s live music there three nights of the week, free wi-fi and a menu offering a selection of organic coffees, teas, smoothies, milkshakes, sandwiches, muffins, cupcakes, cookies and other pastry items. It has a clean, contemporary feel – and a relaxed vibe. It also wants to be more than a place where people rush through to get their morning java. “We want to be the community coffee shop,” said J.D. Lane, one of the company’s five partners. “We don’t want to be a place where we’re simply in someone’s traffic pattern – they’re heading to work, they’re Pete Davidson prepares one of his creations called grabbing their morning coffee Caramel Macchiato Dream. because they have to have it.” They appreciate that kind of business, like something ethereal.” Lane said, of the Lane said. One night fishing for snook By Capt. Scott Keith Fishing Columnist
While most people are headed for bed, or already there, the hardcore snook angler is just getting ready to go. We navigate in pitch darkness, guided by the occasional flashing beacon of a channel marker. The night sky lights up as the 1 million candlepower spotlight fires a beam on that hazard you know is there, but you can’t see. Guiding the boat at night is relaxing, yet all the while one’s nerves are on end. Finally the ride is done and we drop the trolling motor and prepare to slip into a residential canal. I like the Tierra Verde area myself with its deep-water canals where the tide rips through on the dark new moon night. Even in the so-called cool of night, the air is heavy with humidity and you sweat as if it were noon. Quiet is key, and the near silence is only broken by a dog that comes running out onto a dock as you pass. The goal is to find the prized dock light shining a snook’s invitation to feed deep into the water. Light is good, but the shad-

ows on the outskirts are often better. The boat is in place and the anchor is quietly set. Gary, my best friend and long-time night fishing buddy, grabs a jumbo live shrimp out of the bait well.We know the odds are against us when we hook the shrimp on the 20-pound test fluorocarbon leader, which is attached to thread-like 10pound test braided line. Gary knows he’s got one shot to get the shrimp into the strike zone. He skillfully side arms his free-lined shrimp up under the dock. The shrimp skips twice along the surface and begins its descent into the strike zone. There’s not a snook swimming that can resist a live shrimp. Sure enough the line goes taut and the battle is about to begin. We’re using circle hooks so there’s really no dramatic hook set required. Gary pulls the rod down and away from the dock to gain leverage on the fish. The drag sings as the snook masterfully tries to wrap the line around every barnacle-laden piling, rope or any other escape device she can find. The drag continues while Gary and I both wonder aloud just how far back under that dock the water goes. It doesn’t seem that far. Amazingly, Gary is able to work the fish from under the dock. What we fail to account for is the sharp fin on the base of the motor. The snook, big and wise as she is, makes a final run behind the boat and slices the line on the motor. While we’re disappointed, it’s a battle we knew up front we probably wouldn’t win. It’s the challenge and thrill that draws us out in the middle of the night. We pick up the anchor and move on until daybreak signals it’s time to go home. Land O’ Lakes resident Capt. Scott Keith can be reached at (813) 760-6735, scott@tampabayinshore.com or visit www.tampabayinshore.com.

Land O’ Lakes cross country: two squads, one team By Kyle LoJacono klojacono@cnewspubs.com
While Land O’ Lakes High has two cross country teams, it is hard to tell from the way the boys and girls squads train and get along. “They train together and everyone really gets along,” said Kris Keppel, who coaches both Gators squads.“They’re like brothers and sisters who all support each other. It helps them get better and also creates a nice rivalry too.” Keppel has coached the boys team the last 17 years and the girls the last 12 seasons. He also coaches boys track and field. Both of Keppel’s teams reached the state meet the last two seasons. The top runner on the boys team is senior four-year runner Hendrix Lafontant. “He’s definitely our overall best runner,” Keppel said of Lafontant.“He’s also in the (International Baccalaureate) curriculum, so he can handle the stress of being a leader on our team and being a good student.” Lafontant wants to get back to states, but also wants to make his teammates better in his last campaign. “I’m just going to try and push myself and my teammates as hard as I can,” Lafontant said.“I’m going to make myself a goal for them. I want the other runners on the team to be able to beat me by the end of the season. Just because I’m the fastest right now doesn’t mean they can’t catch me. I want them to strive to pass me.” Lafontant’s person best time in the 5K (five kilometers) is 16:52. “I think our team will do very well,” Lafontant said.“We have a few freshmen like Travis (Nichols) and Tyler Stahl who are very good runners and I see a lot of potential in them.” Keppel said that Nichols is the most improved runner from the summer. He has improved his personal best time from 20:02 to 18:06 in a six-week time span. He moved

to Land O’ Lakes from Ohio before starting high school and his teammates have helped him get faster. “They all help push me to do as good as I can,” Nichols said.“Tyler Stahl, the other freshman, is always right next to me and always helps. “It’s also great to get to practice with the girls team because it’s more teammates to push you and make you better,” Nichols continued. The No. 1 runner for the boys team is set, but there is a lot of competition on the girls side. Senior Ashley Ford starts the year as the fastest, but Keppel said senior Alea Basulto and junior Alyssa Lonsway are not far behind. “It definitely keeps us all motivated because we are all a team and want to do

Orange cones are spread out on the football field each with a different color magic marker under it.The runners are broken into two teams and each runner on the team has to mark a card with the right color in the correct order. “It builds speed, but also communication and strategy,” Keppel said.“They should send the fastest runner to the farthest cone and let the slower runners mark their cards first because we only give them one color at a time. They have to all run back before we give them the next one.” Games like that help break up the long hours of pounding the pavement that have gotten Gators teams to state meets consistently during Keppel’s time as coach. All the younger runners want to get back to states to send the seniors out as winners. “I just don’t want to disappoint them,” Coach Kris Keppel said freshman Travis Nichols said.“They’ve worked hard to get to Nichols is the most improved runner from states and I want to make sure I can help the summer. them get back there.”

Last start of the season for coach Alan Black Wesley Chapel team looks for first trip to states By Kyle LoJacono klojacono@cnewspubs.com
Alan Black has been the only boys golf coach at Wesley Chapel High and the Wildcats are looking to send him out a winner. “He’s probably the coolest guy I know,” senior Matt Wynne said of Black.“He’s laid back most of the time, but gets really serious with us when he needs to be. He’s just a good guy and a great coach. “All the seniors want to make this our best year, but we also want to send him off with some hardware,” Wynne continued. “We’re all trying our best to get to states.” Black came to the school when it
opened in 1999. He previously coached at Land O’ Lakes and Pasco highs. In total he has coached golf for 24 years in Pasco County. “I’ve been coaching for a long time,” Black said. “It’s a matter of having children and grandchildren that I’d like to spend some more time with. Cowboys defeat Warriors in battle of north Hillsborough By Kyle LoJacono klojacono@cnewspubs.com
The Gaither High football team won the first meeting with Steinbrenner High 20-7 in Lutz Sept. 10. The Cowboys (1-1) defense harassed the Warriors (0-1) offense all night, limiting them to 42 yards and three first downs. Steinbrenner quarterback Christian Carriere was 1-for-16 passing with two interceptions and was also sacked three times, twice by linebacker Josh Scarberry. “It was huge to get this win,” Scarberry said.“To us this is a rivalry game. The whole defense really played well coming out getting sacks, tackles for losses. They really weren’t doing anything on us.” Steinbrenner coach Floyd Graham said of his offense, “We made so many bad mistakes. We’ve got to get better on the offensive line.We were just really atrocious is the best word to put it. It’s just inexperience and we weren’t ready to play tonight.” One of the few highlights for Steinbrenner was recovering an onside kick to start the game. Graham said he knew Gaither would not look for it on the opening kickoff, but the Warriors could not manage a first down on the drive.
Steinbrenner quarterback Christian Carriere.
THIRD ANNUAL
Gaither took its opening possession 58 yards, ending with a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Shug Oyegunle. The Cowboys also scored on their second drive on a 21-yard pass by Oyegunle to wide receiver Josh Bultron. Oyegunle finished with 172 passing yards and two touchdowns while adding 43 rushing yards. “The more experience I get the more comfortable I feel in the offense,”Oyegunle said.“Getting the first win is so good because it lets everyone know we’re ready to hunt. We’re ready to go get anyone.” Gaither struggled to produce after the first two drives, losing a muffed punt, throwing an interception, fumbling the ball on the Steinbrenner one-yard line in the fourth quarter and having a punt blocked that eventually led to the Warriors only touchdown. “I would’ve liked to put a few more points on the board, but we got it done,” said Gaither coach Mark Kantor.“We’ll go back to the drawing board and prepare for Wharton (High) next week.” Despite the difference in yardage, Steinbrenner kept the game close until Mitch McNall came down with a 9-yard touchdown pass to seal the win for the Cowboys. McNall also caught a 10-yard pass on fourth down in the fourth quarter that gave Gaither a first down. “When I caught that touchdown I felt like the game was ours,” McNall said.“It was a great team effort to come out with this win. I think this is Shug’s best game he’s ever played. He’s been getting better and better and the offensive line protected him, the running backs got the job done and the defense shut the door.” Steinbrenner’s lone score came on a 5yard run by Kendall Pearcey. The Warriors will try to get their first varsity win Thursday, Sept. 16 at Blake High while Gaither will go for two in a row that

I was born in New Orleans. My family still lives here. We have to restore the Gulf communities for the shrimpers, fishermen, hotel and restaurant owners who live and work here. - Iris Cross, BP Community Outreach
Making This Right Beaches Claims Cleanup
Economic Investment Environmental Restoration Health and Safety Wildlife
No oil has flowed into the Gulf for weeks. But we know this is just the beginning of our work. BP has taken full responsibility for the cleanup in the Gulf and that includes keeping you informed. Restoring Gulf Communities We can’t undo this tragedy. But we can help people get back on their feet. We have been working with impacted communities since day one. Partnering with local governments and community organizations, my job is to listen to people’s needs and frustrations and find ways to help. We have 19 community centers and teams in four states, listening and helping. Restoring The Economy BP is here in Gulf communities with shrimpers, fishermen, hotel and restaurant owners, helping to make them whole. More than 120,000 claim payments totaling over $375 million have already gone to people affected by the spill. We have committed a $20 billion independent fund to pay all legitimate claims, including lost incomes until people impacted can go back to work. And none of this will be paid by taxpayers. BP has also given grants of $87 million to the states to help tourism recover and bring people back to the Gulf beaches. Restoring The Environment We’re going to keep looking for oil and cleaning it up if we find it. Teams will remain in place for as long as it takes to restore the Gulf Coast. And we’ve dedicated $500 million to work with local and national scientific experts on the impact of the spill and to restore environmental damage. Thousands of BP employees have their roots in the Gulf. We support over 10,000 jobs in the region and people here are our neighbors. We know we haven’t always been perfect, but we will be here until the oil is gone and the people and businesses are back to normal. We will do everything we can to make this right.
