Village is ‘Going Green’

BY CINDY LERNER Mayor, Village of Pinecrest We are hearing quite a lot lately from our President about energy efficiency programs as economic stimulus and as an environmental principle. It is time the Village of Pinecrest makes a commitment to do our part to protect our planet and focus on reducing carbon emissions; in short, to “Go Green.”

I am excited to announce the creation of the Pinecrest Going Green Advisory Council. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at the Pinecrest Community Center and the public is invited to attend and participate.

One of my first official acts as your mayor was to sign the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ “Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement” committing that under my administration the Village would begin to take actions to reduce our carbon footprint and preserve the environment.

Since signing the agreement, I have been listening and learning, and looking at how we operate. It is time to engage the community, and I invite you to join us in this effort. −−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−

Positive PEOPLE in Pinecrest

NATALIE TORRENTE Natalie Torrente is a senior at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy and is interested in helping people as someone working in the public health arena.

That’s a change of thinking for her because until recently she was certain that she was going to be a doctor.

To start preparation for a life in medicine, Torrente volunteered to work at South Miami Hospital and the Baptist Hospital Outpatient Surgical Center.

“I worked with the nurses, helping them make the beds,” Torrente says.

Last summer she also interned in State Rep. Juan Zapata’s office for a couple of weeks doing clerical work and helping with his re-election campaign.

Torrente’s family is friendly with State Rep. Julio Robaina.

“I talked to him about the political arena because I’m interested in that,” Torrente says.

Robaina set up the internship for her in Zapata’s office.

Her community service includes volunteering in the soup kitchen at St. Anne’s and working at the St. Louis Festival for the Poor. She has also helped out at the Lourdes annual tennis tournament fundraiser.

“I’m on the tennis team,” she says.

“That’s why I help with the tennis tournament.”

Torrente is also in the peer ministry.

Currently she is planning an encounter to be held in West Palm Beach.

“It’s a religious retreat with Christ,” she says.

Torrente has been in the Model United Nations during her four years at Lourdes. She is on the Model UN executive board and helps plan logistics for the competitions. She also does fundraising to help give other girls the opportunity to attend and assists with competition preparations.

“In February I went to the University of Florida Model UN competition and I won an award there,” she says.

Because of the research she has done to be an award-winning delegate, she has become interested in international health issues, which is why she hopes to work for the World Health Organization or the Center for Disease Control.

One organization that she has invested a lot of energy in is the Focus on the Nation Club, which meets to talk about conservation. Last year, she was one of the students who participated in the Fairchild Tropical Gardens Challenge, which promotes saving the environment. The students studied ways to make Lourdes more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. They looked at the school’s power bills and found ways to conserve energy, such as having teachers turn off their computers each night and switching to fluorescent light bulbs. They also promoted recycling. The students decided to continue their efforts by creating the club and pushing more cultural changes to make Lourdes greener.

“We sponsored a teach-in,” Torrente says. “All the teachers had to give some sort of presentation on how to save the planet.”

Torrente is also a member of the National Honor Society and is vice president of the Pre-Med Club. She has been accepted to 11 colleges and universities, including George Washington, Villanova, Emory and the University of Maryland. During spring break, she went to Washington D.C. and Philadelphia to visit her top choices.

GABRIELLE KNIGHT Gabrielle Knight, a senior at Westminster Christian School, spent a week in Tallahassee working as a messenger for the Florida Legislature. Only 240 students from throughout the state are selected for the program and they must be chosen by their state representative. Knight was picked for the program by Rep. J.C. Planas.

“I thought it was a very interesting experience,” she says, adding that she learned how the legislature works. “We got to sit in committee meetings and to see how bills passed or didn’t pass. We also got to sit in the chambers and see all the artwork and learn the ins and outs of things.”

Knight’s job for the week was to relay messages from one office to another.

Unlike pages, messengers do not work on the floor of the chamber.

“We delivered documents to the Pepper Building,” she says. “Whatever they needed us to do, we were happy to do it.”

That included mail delivery to the offices as well. The job allowed her to observe the representatives at work.

“I didn’t go in with pre-set expectations,” Knight says. “Everything was new for me.”

Knight was in Tallahassee in midMarch, before the budget battles got

heated, although the legislators were tackling some controversial subjects.

“Everyone is very civil with each other, very polite,” she says. “You would think there would be high tension, but there wasn’t.”

Knight was there for the pro-school rally, which attracted many people from South Florida. She says the legislators were very respectful, although the representatives are so busy they can’t give everyone as much attention as they would like.

The messengers did meet with Gov. Charlie Crist who spoke to them about the school funding situation and other issues, although not in detail.

“I remember my last day there I went to the chamber and took a few pictures sitting in my representative’s seat,” she says.

At Westminster Christian, Knight is an active member of the Homeless Ministry Club. The club makes sandwiches on Fridays and on Saturdays they visit Camillus House to pass out the sandwiches and talk to people.

“I really like working with all sorts of people,” Knight says. “A lot of them are very interesting.”

Knight says she has learned from that experience that every human being has basic needs, and if they are not able to fulfill them on their own, we have a duty to help them in any way we can.

Knight has volunteered to work at South Miami Hospital in the burn center. She also reads to blind people there, works in the gift shop and does clerical work in the risk management department. She worked at South Miami Hospital over three summers volunteering a couple of days each week.

Knight’s future includes returning to Tallahassee because she has been accepted at Florida State University.

So far, she has not declared a major, although political science does interest her. Another potential area of interest is in communications and public relations.

“I like working with people,” she says.

Positive PEOPLE in Pinecrest

BRETT GERSON Palmetto High School junior Brett Gerson already has accumulated about 1,000 hours of community service. He earned those hours in a variety of ways, but many of them came from working

directly with kids as a coach in the Howard Palmetto Baseball Softball Association.

Gerson is an assistant coach for the team that his brother plays on in the HPBSA, a position he has held for the last three years. He also works as an umpire.

When he was younger, he also played for a team in the HPBSA. Gerson has also been involved in the Junior Orange Bowl Sports Ability Games.

“It’s for kids who are disabled or have mental disabilities,” he says. “They all come together and play. They have races.”

At the games, Gerson passes out water and food and sometimes he is even able to pass out medals to the winners.

“My aunt and my grandmother are on the board for Sports Ability and I help them out,” he says. “I also have friends who do it.”

Gerson says it is rewarding to see the smiles on the faces of the children when they win their medals.

“They practice real hard, so it’s nice to see them accomplish their goals,” he says.

Gerson has also coached youth soccer

teams. He volunteered for two years for the Dade County sports program at Howard Drive Elementary, working with fourth and fifth grade girls and boys.

“We did very well,” he says. “You learn that a lot of practice and a lot of hard work pay off in the end.”

The kids even learned how to lose gracefully.

“They held up their heads when they lost,” he says. “The learned that they could work hard and come together as a team.”

Another place where Gerson worked hard is on the stage at the annual Kids2Kids show. Teens from several schools come together to lip sync and dance at a Broadway-type show that raises money to send children who are tied to ventilators to a special camp. Gerson’s sister was one of the founding members of the organization. He says that seeing the children who attend the camp at the show is one of the most rewarding aspects of his involvement.

“Seeing them is probably better than the show we put on,” he says.

Gerson also helps his mother with her

non-profit organization Mother’s Voices.

The organization teaches people about HIV and AIDS. “I help them with mailing out about 1,300 invitations to the luncheon,” he says. “At the actual luncheon, I sell some raffle tickets. I just do as much as I can.”

At school, Gerson was recently elected vice president of Key Club.

“We’re just starting to make our plans for the upcoming year to see what we can give back to the community,” he says.

Key Club members put together candy bags at Halloween and distribute them to children. They also make peanut-butterand-jelly sandwiches and take them to Camillus House to help feed the homeless.

Gerson is also a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the Science National Honor Society and the National Honor Society.

He is just beginning his college search and has already visited the University of Texas, his top choice. He plans to major in business.

GREEN, Because you have a choice

Last week, I attended the City of Miami sponsored “Gateway to Green” conference, where I heard speakers, spoke to vendors and many experts and learned about the Florida Green Building Coalition’s local government certification for adopting green practices. I also learned that there are significant federal stimulus dollars and other grants available for cities to implement programs to reduce greenhouse emissions and grants that provide assistance to its residents to implement such practices in their homes.

These initiatives will not only protect the environment, they are cost-effective measures that will save money.

“That’s none of your business,” the man said angrily. “Why do you ask such a thing?”

“I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?”

“If you must know, I make $50 an hour.”

“Oh,” the little boy replied with his head down. “Daddy, may I please borrow $25?”

The father was furious.

“If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don’t work hard every day to pay for such childish frivolities.”

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and began to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions just to get some money? After an hour or so, the man calmed down and started to think about what had happened.

Maybe there was something the boy really needed to buy with that $25, and he really did not ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the boy’s room and opened the door.

“Are you asleep, son?” he asked.

“No, daddy, I’m awake,” the boy replied.

“I’ve been thinking; maybe I was too hard on you earlier. It’s been a long day and I took out my aggravation out on you. Here’s the $25 you asked for.”

The little boy sat straight up, smiling broadly.

“Oh, thank you, daddy!” he cried.

Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out a wad of crumpled up bills.

Seeing that the boy already had money, the man felt his anger rising again as he watched his son slowly count his money.

As he carefully placed the last bill in place, he looked up at his father with a broad smile.

“Why do you want more money if you already have some?” the father grumbled.

“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” said the little boy. “Daddy, now I have $50, so I would like to buy an hour of your time. Please come home early tomorrow, I would like to have dinner with you.”

The man was crushed. He put his arms around his son and begged him for forgiveness.

This story is a reminder to all of us who work so hard in this modern, fastpaced age that we should not let life slip through our fingers without spending time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts.

Remember to share $50 worth of your time with someone you love. If we die tomorrow, the company we work for will easily replace us in a matter of hours. But the family and friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

Kids should make their own decisions about college

BY KARA BISCEGLIA There has been a lot of talk about parents being too involved and not letting go of their kids. Nowhere is that more visible than in the increasingly competitive college admissions process. Ambitious parents are becoming more and more involved in their children’s college choices. A girl I know did not know where half of the schools she applied to were located.

So, I thought to myself, is it the kids or the parents applying to college?

We all know that just because kids want something doesn’t mean it’s always good for them. I think that many parents are struggling to find the balance between helping and, well, doing it all for their kids. Today, parents can join support groups, even organizations to help them get through their children’s college admissions process. When did it become so hard for students to apply to college themselves? I understand parents wanting to help make sure deadlines are met, fees are paid, calls are made and appointments are scheduled on time. But, I don’t understand why some of those responsibilities are not given to the children. For me, applying to college was a step into adulthood and independence.

Maybe I am lucky that I had working parents who were too busy to hover over me or stay online all day researching what colleges fit me the best. But to me, this made me feel like it was my time to shine. I think the best investment my parents made for my future was not

COLLEGE LIFE butting in and just letting me get on with it. I feel that those parents who don’t or can’t are robbing their children of the satisfaction of doing it on their own and are delivering the message that they are incapable of doing it themselves.

A parent wanting to help their child in this stressful process is understandable because every parent just wants the best for their kid. But I do think there is a line they should not cross. I read an article about a mother quitting her job so she could stay at home and help her daughter with her college applications.

You might find this shocking, but surprisingly it isn’t rare. I couldn’t fathom the thought of either of my parents quitting their jobs to stay at home and work on my applications with me. I started to get annoyed when my mom would just remind me about deadlines; I could not imagine her hovering over me, nor would I want that.

I feel that if my parents hovered over me all the time about my applications, it would have affected my ability to be independent. How can children be expected to act independently if their parents are so vigorously supporting them? And is it the kids work or the parents that got them into college? It would be unfair if children were judged not on their own merits, but on their parents. Children need to learn about adulthood, not perpetual dependence and applying to college on their own is a perfect time to do so.

In these tough economic times, people are looking for comfort. That’s why Jesse Vazquez opened Cine-It Burger & Grill in the Suniland Shopping Center featuring such “comfort foods” as mouthwatering burgers, delicious shoestring French fries, chicken sandwiches and a variety of salads.

Vazquez is familiar to Pinecrest area residents. He used to own two Chicken Kitchen restaurants in the area.

“My first store was the one in Pinecrest,” he says. “Back in 2008 I decided to retire and I sold my restaurants.

Eventually I got bored and I had a concept I always wanted to do. Being that times are tough for people, I wanted to open a restaurant that brought back happier days. That’s where Cine-It was born.”

Vazquez says the concept is simple – serve only such “comfort foods” as burgers, shakes, fries, and salads.

“We also feature the original sliders (mini-burgers),” he says. “The sliders are made the old fashioned way.”

Everything is made fresh to order, including the shoestring fries. The burgers are big and juicy and made of 100 percent beef. The toppings are included in the price of the burger.

Customers order at the front registers, then sit down while the orders are cooked.

“While you eat, we entertain you with 1950s science fiction classics such as The Incredible Shrinking Man, Dr. Cyclops and The Mole People, to name a few,” Vazquez says.

Cine-It also shows episodes of the classic Flash Gordon serial and Vazquez says today’s teens get a kick out of the special effects filmmakers used in the 1950s.

“They love the sparklers that show from behind the spaceship as it flies into space,” he says with a laugh. “Families can enjoy the movies while the kids watch Popeye, Betty Boop or the Little Rascals in their own kids’ section.”

Vazquez also used some creativity in developing the menu. The “Main Event” includes four types of burgers. The sliders are called “Honey I Shrunk the Burgers.”

Hot dogs are “Slum Dogs.” And for those who like soup, there’s “Yes, Soup for You,” a tip of the hat to the classic episode from the Seinfeld television series. Cine-It also has “Creature Feature” Kids Meals that lets youngsters choose from sliders and fries, hot dogs or a cheese sandwich.

Future plans call for a breakfast buffet on weekends, delivery service to Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and The Falls areas, a kidsmeal pizza and birthday parties.

“We will cater to the individual,” Vazquez says. “We’d like to film the parties and later show it on the kids’ TV.” At the birthday parties he’s considering having kids play scenes from old movies.

“We’ll get some costumes and role play,” he says.

Adults and teens will enjoy the Godzilla Nights starting in May. Vazquez says the restaurant will feature Godzilla movies from 8 p.m. to closing and serve Godzilla Burgers made of double beef patties, cheddar cheese, grilled mushrooms and onions.

“There’s a little something for everyone here,” he says. “This is a family-friendly place.”

Dade Heritage Trust leads move to restore Marine Stadium

BY BECKY ROPER MATKOV President/CEO of Dade Heritage Trust The Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key — now fenced off and in disrepair — will be restored and re-used if the Dade Heritage Trust succeeds in its latest campaign to save another of Miami’s unique historic places.

As Miami’s largest nonprofit historic preservation organization, Dade Heritage Trust has fought for 37 years to rescue Miami’s most important — and usually oldest — landmarks. Projects have included the 2000-year-old Miami Circle, the 1855 Cape Florida Lighthouse, the 1858 Wagner Homestead, the 1897 City Cemetery, the 1905 original office of Dr. James Jackson, the 1917 Dice House, the 1925 Freedom Tower and the 1905 Old Miami High.

The Marine Stadium is less than 50 years old, the usual minimum age for being deemed an historic site. However, the structure is such an icon of mid-century modern design that the City of

Miami, which owns the stadium, designated it an historic site last fall, protecting it from demolition.

The Marine Stadium and Basin project was designed by Hilario Candela, a 28year-old Cuban architect with the Miami firm of Pancoast, Ferendino, Grafton, Skeels and Burnham. The 6500-seat stadium was constructed of poured concrete with a dramatic cantilevered roof. It was completed in 1964 and named for Coconut Grove pioneer Commodore Ralph Munroe.

For over two decades the Marine Stadium was internationally known for its power boat racing, movie shoots and concerts of all kinds, from the Boston Pops to Jimmy Buffett. Its waterfront setting and floating stage, with the beautiful view of the Miami skyline across Biscayne Bay, made it a one-of-a-kind venue for neverto-be forgotten memories.

The Marine Stadium was damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and has been vacant and vandalized since, with plans being floated by the City over the years for demolition. Engineering reports have since shown that the structure was sound, though in need of major repairs.

In April 2008, the Dade Heritage Trust launched an initiative called Friends of the Marine Stadium, led by Don Worth and Jorge Hernandez, to return the stadium to use for rowing regattas, boat races, concerts and water-related activities.

Since then, the Marine Stadium has received endorsements from national and international groups, including the National Trust and the World Monuments Fund.

On May 8 at the Miami Rowing Club, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to hear presentations on design plans for the stadium basin and Virginia Key proposed by a studio from the University of Miami School of Architecture. For more info, go to <www.marinestadium.org>.

My counselor said I only need to take two years of math. I think this is great because math is my weakest subject. Some of my friends said that’s not true. What is the truth?

The truth is that the State of Florida requires only two years of math.

However, all major colleges prefer four years, and many require four years of math.

What do I wear to college interview?

Be natural, be yourself. Boys do not need to wear a suit and tie. If the interview is directly after school and you have a school uniform, by all means, wear it. If not, make sure your clothes are neatly pressed. Girls, have your nails clean without nail polish. Same thing for boys, clean nails. Do not wear anything outrageous. Girls, play down the makeup and jewelry. Very little makeup is best. Take a pen and paper because that shows the person interviewing you that you are ready to take notes. Come prepared with at least three questions about the college that you are interviewing for; this shows that you are really interested. Never be late. Tardiness shows that you really don’t care about being there. Being on time or early shows that this is a priority in your life.

Look the person directly in the eyes (eye contact). Turn your body towards the interviewer, not away. Shake hands firmly at the start and end of the interview. It is important to thank the person for his or her time.

My parents are nagging me about taking the SAT. I’m a junior and I don’t see what the big deal is. I’ll take it in my senior year and not have to stress this year. What do you think of that strategy and what’s the big deal

about the SAT anyway?

I don’t know enough about your situation to give you a personal strategy, but my best suggestion for any student would be to take the SAT at the end of your junior year, May and/or June. And why is it so important? Because the SAT is a predictor of how well you will do in college. It is a 5 hour test that is used to compare you to thousands of other students taking the same test. I’m a senior and really, really need financial aid. Every little penny helps and I can’t go out of town to a state school because I don’t have the money for housing or trips back and forth. What do you think I should do? Go to University of Miami and try to apply for scholarships there and earn money, or go to Miami-Dade College? I want to become a teacher.

I think we are very lucky to have Miami-Dade College right in our own backyard. Your best bet, in my opinion, is to go to Miami-Dade College and get a teaching degree. Also, I’m almost positive that you could get a full tuition reimbursement if you want to be a teacher. There are many scholarships for students aspiring to be teachers.

What do you know about Barnard College?

Barnard College is located at 3009 Broadway, NY and was founded in 1889.

Their regular application deadline is Jan 2 and they are an all-women’s college. The cost for room and board is $11,392. The cost for tuition and fees is $33,078. The student faculty ratio is 10:1. The 3 most popular majors are Public Administration and Social Services, Psychology, and English.

Ninety-one percent of students live oncampus and there is no affiliation with the Greek System. Barnard is a small school with 2,350 students.

The mayor, along with Councilmember Bob Ross, Palmetto principal Howard Weiner and students planted two native Dade County slash pine trees at the school to commemorate Earth Day. “Pinecrest is committed to the protection and preservation of our environment,” said Mayor Lerner, who

recently established a Going Green Advisory Council.

Ross and Councilmember Nancy Harter attended a similar event at Palmetto Middle School later that day where students also planted native pine trees.

Earth Day was founded in 1970 with the goal of inspiring environmental awareness and encouraging the conservation, protection and appreciation of our natural resources. Earth Day has become an international event that annually sees more than one billion people participating in over 180 countries.

Gold frenzy fuels growth of Countrywide Gold Buyers

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD With today’s deflated economy, many people are looking for ways to turn unused household items into cash. One certain method of doing that is by selling unwanted gold jewelry.

Some companies require people to send in their gold items in specially marked envelops for evaluation and a price quote. But Countrywide Gold Buyers is different; they buy the gold on the spot.

Countywide Gold Buyers has set up kiosks at Dadeland Mall, Miami International Mall and in a store at the Falls Shopping Center. Plans call for opening additional locations.

“We’re looking for used, broken and outdated gold jewelry,” says Edwin Carrion, the company’s chief financial officer “We buy gold, silver and platinum.

We recycle your gold for cash. Everybody is doing the green thing, but they are forgetting to recycle the most precious metals — gold, silver and platinum.”

Countrywide president Luis Junco adds that his company is exploring a new market, while at the same time helping people who need cash.

“Our two goals are to help the community and help the environment,” Junco says. “We’re not a pawn shop. We provide a safe, secure environment for people to come and sell their jewelry.”

Countrywide Gold Buyers works directly with refineries where the jewelry is melted down for re-sale to jewelers. They weigh and test the jewelry, cutlery or even gold teeth in front of the customer.

“We actually show the prices to the

customer,” Junco says. “People come in and say this is 10 carat gold and we tell them no, it’s 18 carats, and pay them for 18 carats.”

Carrion adds that Countrywide Gold Buyers will not deceive customers with shady tactics like purchasing a valuable piece of jewelry with a lowball offer and then re-selling the item for a huge profit. He says if a customer comes in with antique jewelry that could be more valuable as is, they will suggest that the owner try selling the pieces at antique shows or look for other places where they might get the value they deserve.

“We tell them what it’s worth,” Junco says. “We are fair. We do what we do because we want people to trust us. Not many people know about jewelry. We don’t resell anything. We are not estate brokers.”

Junco and Carrion say they want the public to understand that they are not like pawnbrokers who buy jewelry for far less than its value. They post their prices and weigh the jewelry in front of the customers. And they immediately give the customer a check. They also report everything they buy to the police, which is why they require identification from sellers.

Carrion says the average customer sells $800 to $1,000 in gold items. And those hosting a gold party at National Gold Buyers can make even more.

“We’ll close the store and purchase the gold, and you get 10 percent of the sales,” Carrion says. “You can come here and drink some wine and eat some cheese.”

“Every month we do a promotion,” said Erin Koppel, whose grandfather founded Maurice’s Jewelers. “Pandora is the No. 1 selling line in the nation.”

Recent giveaways have included a Pandora umbrella and a one caret solitaire valued at $4,000.

For every $100 spent on Pandora, customers will get a chance at the drawing.

Student creates ‘Teens Against Domestic Abuse’

BY LEE STEPHENS Emily Martinez-Lanza is just like most high school juniors; she’s thinking about what college to attend, studying hard, doing family chores and meeting with friends after school.

In spite of a full schedule, the 17-year old Gulliver Preparatory School student found time to create the organization Teens Against Domestic Abuse (TADA).

“I was inspired to start TADA following the death of a close family friend that resulted from domestic violence,” says Martinez-Lanza. “I became aware of the suffering she endured, as well as the devastating affect this tragedy had on her family.”

Losing someone to domestic violence influenced Martinez-Lanza to fully delve into the problem.

“Throughout the course of my research, I realized the destructive nature of domestic violence,” says Martinez-Lanza. “I was determined to make a difference, hence the formation of TADA.” Martinez-Lanza founded TADA in 2008 to raise domestic abuse awareness, encourage victims to seek help and assist in rebuilding their lives.

TADA has since gained momentum through Martinez-Lanza’s determination and leadership, having raised over $5,000 to provide basic needs for victims and to support educational programs.

Martinez-Lanza’s most recent TADA campaign is called Break the Silence – Break the Cycle, an initiative designed to raise funds to assist abuse victims in their everyday lives once they have ended a violent relationship. She says that silence is not an option when it comes to domestic violence.

“Silence only serves to accelerate and aggravate the cycle of abuse,” says Martinez-Lanza. “I believe that celebrities who serve as role models for our youth need to convey the right message.

In addition to guiding TADA, Martinez-Lanza makes time for other campus activities, including serving as president of the Mercy Hospital Teen and College Student Auxiliary, vice president of the Key Club International chapter and memberships with the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and English Honors Society. So how does Martinez-Lanza find the time to squeeze all of these activities into her busy schedule?

“Mom told me long ago that time is my most precious commodity, so never waste it,” says Martinez-Lanza. “Even in my busiest days, I find time to play the piano, watch a TV show with my family and talk to friends on the phone, or text them. I faithfully follow her advice each day, from the moment I get out of bed each morning until I fall asleep that night.”

• Free Internet access — Any teen with an active library card may use our desktop or laptop computers for up to two onehour sessions per day. Our computers are equipped with 2003 Microsoft Office software, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Publisher. It’s a perfect opportunity to work on that college entrance essay, fine-tune your resume or simply play catch-up with your friends online.

• Gaming@Your Library — Pinecrest has joined the gaming craze and now carries more than 30 different video games for X Box360, Playstation 3 and Wii! The library recently hosted a Rock Band tournament with more being planned, so stay tuned.

Bariatric surgery: A life-changing approach to weight loss

BY DR. JORGE L. SOSA It is estimated that more than 60 percent of American women are overweight, according to the National Center for Health Statistics of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Many women battling obesity often find that their weight leads to fertility problems.

Today, doctors see more than 50,000 women a year age 18 to 45 who undergo weight-loss surgery in hopes it will help improve menstrual regularity, ovulation, and pregnancy rates.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery, is an option for women who are severely or morbidly obese and whose health, and possibly fertility, is at major risk because of their weight. Bariatric surgery refers to various surgical procedures to treat obesity by making changes to the gastrointestinal tract to reduce the amount of food that can be eaten.

Gastric bypass, a common form of weight loss surgery, is a procedure that shrinks the stomach and allows food to bypass the initial part of the small intestine. Gastric bypass has been shown to result in significant weight loss in addition to improving or curing diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and decreasing the risks of developing certain forms of cancer.

Although scientific evidence on fertility after bariatric surgery is limited, data does suggest that fertility can improve with significant weight loss. It is believed that having weight-loss surgery changes the way hormones in the body are regulated after the cells empty of fat stores.

The less fat in the cells, the less metabolic and hormonal effects they produce. Therefore, helping women to stabilize circulation of hormones triggering normal ovulation each month can help lead to an increase in fertility.

The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute recommends determining Body Mass Index (BMI) as the best way to assess if you are overweight or obese.

BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight, and it applies to both men and women. Not everyone is a candidate for bariatric surgery. To be a successful surgical candidate, you must:

LET’S TALK CARS I really like the 2009 Suzuki Equator, the company’s all-new entry into the midsize pickup truck segment.

It has a bold look and offers a nice combination of style, utility, comfort and offroad capability. In fact, the Equator recently was named “4X4 of the Year” by 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine.

Developed in a joint effort with Nissan North America, the new Equator is available in both Extended Cab and Crew Cab body styles and in rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations. It has a contemporary design, with a number of unique Suzuki elements, including the hood, front fenders, grille, bumpers, front fascia and tailgate. The large “S” over the honeycomb mesh grille denotes that this truck is a Suzuki product.

To accommodate loads ranging from ATVs to motorcycles, Suzuki offers Crew

A 4.0-liter, V-6 DOHC engine that produces 261 hp with 281 pounds-feet of torque is an available option. The V-6 has an aluminum block with cast-iron cylinder liners, Teflon-coated pistons, a micro-finished forged steel crankshaft, micro-finished camshafts driven by a silent two-stage timing chain and variable valve timing.

BY MORGAN LEVY I have had the pleasure of speaking about conservation for many years. I have talked to chambers of commerce, homeowner associations, religious groups, and school and university organizations.

My message always reminds the audience that our greatest scientists — many of them Nobel Laureates — are warning us that Global Warming that will cause severe damage to our planet. You have heard many times that ocean levels in the next 50 years may rise as much as three feet. That would place much of our Florida Coastline underwater, along with many hotels, businesses and homes. We can no longer afford to ignore this warning.

We in the United States of America have become the most wasteful society ever to inhabit this planet. Recycling will certainly help to manage our tremendous waste stream. However, until we learn to conserve our resources and not be so wasteful, our waste stream will continue to be a major problem.

Let’s review our options for reducing the solid waste stream in Miami-Dade County: • Recycling plastic, metal, glass and news paper — The Miami-Dade Solid Waste Department has recently begun a collection program that includes, a wheeled container for these co-mingled items that is collected every two weeks.

This system is working well in other areas and it will succeed here. There must be a market for these recyclables. This recycling provides jobs both in the collection, separation and reuse of these valuable products.

• In-vessel composting of organic waste – A success all over the world. It works and now is the time to begin this process in Miami-Dade County. In-vessel composting is environmentally sound and can recycle up to 40 percent of our solid waste stream.

It reduces the volume of organic waste, eliminates odors, vermin attraction and produces a valuable end product that is immediately marketable. It not only provides jobs, but it sustains jobs in local agriculture that is fighting to survive. The bumper sticker that reads No Farms, No Food should remind us that if we permit our local farms to disappear we will then be dependent on foreign food to survive, much like we are dependent on foreign oil now. We must not permit local agriculture to disappear either through development or failure to compete with foreign imports.

Conservation Counts • Landfilling — A present and future hazard to our health, our environment and our pocketbook. Landfills do not work well for us. The sooner we close down all landfills, the better off we all will be. There are better alternatives and we must insist that we begin now to close down and mine the present landfills for the valuable materials that are in them. Closing down landfills will create lots of jobs in the recovery and reuse of those materials.

We need to create those jobs right now and federal funds available. We must collectively, with a very strong voice, call on Miami-Dade County and Waste Management Inc., the owner of the only local operating landfills, to apply for environmental protection funding from the President’s Economic Stimulus Plan to close down and mine these landfills, and replace them with in-vessel composting facilities.

This will create thousands of jobs and protect and preserve our environment. The funding is available, the present administration favors environmental protection and the Economic Stimulus Plan wants to create jobs. What are we waiting for?

• Electr onic Waste — E-Waste is still a major problem. Some computer companies will take back your old computer, but be sure that they do not downstream the computer to a vendor who will ship it overseas.

There is an urgent need for more research followed by legislation to safely dispose of E-Waste. As science advances, it is entirely possible that the hazardous materials used in electronics today will be replaced with safe, alternative materials that can accomplish the better electronic programs and better electronic products. The regulatory compliance and record keeping remain a major problem. We cannot even regulate the safe production of peanut butter in this country, so how can we hope to regulate EWaste under the present conditions. There is much to be done here.

None of the good solutions available to us right now will ever be completely realized until we all understand that reducing our waste stream is everybody’s job.

The spinal cord in the body is being linked to pretty much your overall health and fitness. For example, if you are having a problem with depression, a pinched nerve can cause it. Same for sinusitis, fatigue, migraines, and so many more symptoms that most doctors just prescribe drugs for. Chiropractic medicine is being looked at more and more for help with common ailments.

This is starting to take trend due to the unnecessary drugs most doctors prescribe which may help the symptoms, but do not take care of the underlying problem. In research, it is found that your spinal cord is the traffic point for all your nerves. If one of them becomes pinched, or blocked, then you will begin to experience different types of ailments. So how does one go about finding the right Chiropractor for them? Well here are a few tips to help you when shopping

These chiropractors will give you a complete work up, from doing a spinal reading, to x-rays, to a full medical questionnaire and history. During these visits, the chiropractor will first meet with you to see where your trouble areas are and begin to address these areas. He/she will also begin to formulate a routine treatment plan to help readjust any spinal shifts and realign your neck as well to keep the nerves from pinching and ending in medical symptoms.

Now that you know what type of chiropractor you are looking for, begin asking around (ask friends, neighbors, co workers, and family members) if they recommend any one that fits in your requirements. However, remember, just because your mom may love her chiropractor, it doesn’t mean that he/she will be a good fit for you. After receiving your recommendations, call the office and ask some questions on their policies and areas pertaining to the type of care you would like to receive. First impressions are always the most important, so if you do not feel like they will best complete your needs, then keep shopping around. Another thing to remember, is that most chiropractors accept insurance, so make sure yours will be compatible with them prior to setting your appointment.

Some chiropractors offer free consultations and x-rays when starting up as a new patient. Use this time to ask more questions of your chiropractor and describe to him/her what you hope to receive from their care. A lot of chiropractors will be upfront and let you know if they can provide the type of care you are looking for and will even refer you to another if they cannot. Make sure to check on licenses and school credits prior to allowing the chiropractor to begin any adjustments on you. A good rule of thumb is to make sure they have been in their own practice for at least two years prior to becoming their patient. You don’t want to go see an intern that just graduated from his/her schooling and is looking for fresh meat to begin practicing on.

Ask family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers for the names of agents they know and would recommend. A dual agent works for the broker who carries a seller’s listing but also works with a buyer who wants to purchase the listing.

How to Know if You Need a Personal Injury Lawyer

BY CHARLES HOFFMAN We’ve all heard the story: a little old lady drives through a fast food restaurant and orders a cup of coffee. In the process of....transporting the coffee it spills and, because it was served at such a dangerously high temperature, the little old lady received massive, painful and disfiguring burns. She sues the fast food restaurant and a jury awards her millions and millions of dollars in punitive damages, 2.7 million dollars, to be exact. But here, according to the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers web site, are some things you don’t know. For years this fast food restaurant had had a problem with the temperature of their coffee – having settled more than 700 incidents of scalding coffee burns previously. The little old lady, who had never sued anyone before in her life, did indeed have very serious burns, which required skin grafts and a 7day stint in the hospital. And finally, on appeal, that 2.7 mil awarded by the jury was reduced to just $480 thousand even though 2.7 million dollars represented just two days of the entire corporation’s coffee sales. Yet this case is often cited as “the problem with our legal system,” where undeserving plaintiffs squeeze millions of dollars out of beleaguered corporations resulting in, well, the high cost of everything. As is readily apparent from the facts above, however, the woman had a legitimate claim, and the fast food restaurant was indeed, as the jury described “willful, reckless, malicious and wanton,” in other words, negligent of the little old lady’s and quite a few other people’s safety.

However legendary and however often misconstrued, the “fast food coffee lawsuit” is a great example of when someone did indeed legitimately need a personal injury lawyer. To simplify the whole thing greatly, according to the American Bar Association, most personal injury cases are based upon situations deriving from negligence – like auto accidents, the most common of personal injury cases – or from intentional wrongdoing or what is called “strict liability,” a situation like that old Saturday Night Live skit where Dan Ackroyd is selling bags of broken glass as toys for tots: as the

Bar Association says, “unreasonably dangerous when used as intended.” These are the bases on which you can file a civil suit: if you’re out for revenge, remember that a personal injury case isn’t a criminal proceeding, so you can’t put that guy who ran over your bike in jail. Actually, one of the best ways of deciding whether you want to become involved in a personal injury lawsuit is by watching some televised court proceedings.

Judge Judy, The People’s Court and others all basically deal with small claims and personal injury. Unless you are seriously out-of-pocket or you have ongoing expenses or other problems directly related to someone else’s negligence, intentional wrongdoing or strict liability as described above, either settling out of court with the threat of a lawsuit or finding some other way to solve your problem, including going on Judge Judy, may be the way to go.

Though we’ve all heard it said that in America you can “sue anybody for anything,” remember that there are also penalties for misusing the court’s time and energies with frivolous lawsuits, so before you decide you’ve been wronged to the extent of legal action, you should probably contact a good personal injury attorney to evaluate your claim. Since, in many cases, personal injury lawyers operated on a contingency basis where they only get paid if they win your case and then take a reasonably substantial (but fair, considering their risk) portion of whatever judgment or settlement is reached. Remember, again according to the bar association, that only a very small percentage of personal injury cases ever go before a jury, most are settled out of court, so be aware and ready for that suggestion from your attorney. Also, remember to shop around. Like other professionals, not all attorneys will give the same advice on every situation. And make sure you have a complete understanding of all the fees and potential expenses that can result from your lawsuit. For example, if you lose your case, you may end up paying costs of the defendant as well as your own.

How accessible is the pharmacist?

Is he or she easy to talk to and willing to hear your concerns?

During what hours is the pharmacist available to answer your questions?

It is important to choose one pharmacist with whom you can establish an ongoing relationship. Also, by choosing one pharmacy, a complete record of the medicines you take is in one place, making them easier to coordinate and manage. Your pharmacist can alert you to possible drug interactions - particularly if you take a number of different medications - help you track refills on important prescriptions, and provide any necessary detail on short notice.

It is wise to consider your entire family’s pharmacy needs. Often, a pharmacist can help you with special circumstances, such as when you are taking care of an elderly relative. If you have aging parents that live nearby, you might ask, for example, if it is possible to deliver prescriptions to their home and send the bill to you.

Not all pharmacists and/or pharmacies provide the same services. All pharmacies

are required to meet minimum standards.

Most, however, offer services and conveniences beyond the minimum requirements.

When choosing a pharmacist and/or pharmacy, you should evaluate your needs and make a selection to meet those needs.

Here are some other suggested questions to consider: Does the pharmacist take time to answer your questions in a manner that you understand?

Is the pharmacy open during hours that fit your schedule?

Does the pharmacy deliver? If so, are there restrictions or additional charges?

If there is an emergency, does the pharmacy provide after-hours service or a special emergency telephone number?

Are charge accounts available?

Does the pharmacy handle the drugs you expect to be taking?

There may be a higher cost for additional services or conveniences such as delivery, charge accounts, and emergency service.

Real value, however, comes not only from the price of your prescriptions, but from having your specific needs met at a fair price.

It is also very helpful to become thoroughly familiar with your insurance benefits as they concern your prescriptions. For example, some prescription benefits plans will only pay for the dispensing of a certain days supply of your medication. If your physician issues a prescription for a larger supply of medication, the pharmacy will have to decrease your quantity dispensed or your insurance company will not pay for the medication.

Obviously, since your physician is issuing the prescriptions, it is important to advise your physician concerning any prescription restrictions under your prescription benefits plan.

Not every pharmacy will accept your prescription drug card. A pharmacy must sign a contract to provide services for each prescription benefit plan. The owner of the pharmacy must review each contract and decide which insurance plans the pharmacy will accept. If the pharmacy does not accept your prescription card, the pharmacy probably does not have a signed contract with your health insurance provider. In some cases, pharmacy owners may take steps to add your prescription benefit plan if asked to do so.

Once you weigh all the factors and choose a pharmacy, it is strongly recommended that you use this pharmacy for all of your prescriptions needs. This allows you to receive the greatest benefit from the “screening” for drug interactions, etc., by your pharmacist since this one pharmacy has all of your prescription drug records.

How to Choose an Air Conditioning Contractor

BY SHEILA JOHNSON When the time comes to install or replace a new central air conditioning system, look for an air conditioning contractor who has had several years experience diagnosing problems and performing installations and repairs.

Ask friends, neighbors and coworkers for the names of contractors they would recommend. It is always better to hire someone who comes with a good referral than to pick someone at random from the phone book. If you can’t get a dependable referral, call at least three different contractors for estimates.

Make sure the contractor that you hire complies with state and local codes and regulations and that he has current business and workers compensation insurance.

Talk with the contractor about your home’s specific needs and listen carefully to any recommendations that are made. Ask about similar jobs the contractor has performed in the past and request the names of previous cus-

tomers you can call as references. Take the time to follow up and talk with the references.

Ask if they were happy with the quality of the work, if the contractor was dependable, and if there were any problems with installations or faulty equipment.

Try to find a contractor who has several years experience performing repairs and installations.

You want someone who not only can service your equipment but who can recommend and install a complete new system if necessary.

Don’t give the job to a company that makes an estimate over the phone without inspecting your home first. Get estimates from multiple contractors but be skeptical of bids that are much lower than the others. A company offering a very low estimate may be trying to scam you with outdated or unreliable equipment.

A good contractor will make recommendations based on the cooling-load calculation that is determined by the size of your home and other factors that impact efficiency. Once the coolingload calculation has been made the contractor should be able to estimate the annual operating cost for the equipment to be installed.

Quality contractors offer prompt, courteous and professional service.

Check to make sure they have an office or shop that has been in business for a few years. If you have any doubts about a particular contractor, check with your local Better Business Bureau or your state attorney general’s office to see if the company has any complaints on record.

How to Choose a Bank

BY MIKE DUNN Choosing the right bank that fits your needs is much easier today because there are many more options available to consumers.

The first thing you may want to consider is the type of banking business that fits your needs. If you travel a lot and need quick access to branch offices in other locations, then a national or regional bank will be the best one to choose. If you don’t travel that much, however, and you place an emphasis on customer relations and like the idea of personally knowing the personnel at the bank, then a small, local bank will suit you just fine. A lot of times, people prefer smaller banks for their friendliness.

Once the issue of local or regional bank is decided, consider the convenience factor. Look for a bank that is close geographically to where you live or work and offers the same or similar services as other banks in town. Or you may want to gauge your choice on the bank’s accessibility. If you are on the road every day, for example, and a bank is located in a convenient spot along your regular travel routine that might be the best one for you.

Most banks have similar services these days, but there are some differences. A good way to check the services a bank offers is to look up its Web site. That will supply you with information about the types of checking and savings accounts that are offered, interest rates on loans, what special services might be available, etc. Know ahead of time what kinds of things you are looking for in terms of service and penalties and perks. Does the bank you have in mind offer online banking and/or ATM service? Does it offer free checking?

Does it offer direct deposit? Is the bank’s interest rate lower than its competitors? Answers to these and other pertinent questions can usually be found online. If you have narrowed your choice down to two or three banks in terms of convenience and the type of banking business you do, then visiting the Web sites of the banks could help you make your final decision.

If you have just moved to a new location, you may want ask neighbors which bank they would recommend. Use that to narrow your choices, and then do your own research based upon the factors listed above.

Something else that is important in terms of choosing a bank is to know yourself. What is your purpose in opening an account? Do you have a plan to build a savings account or do you just want an

account so that you have a place to have your paycheck deposited or where you can get your paycheck cashed? Is earning interest important to you? Answering these questions honestly can help you not just in choosing a bank, but in gauging your own personality in terms of finances.

If you’re serious about savings, then you will want a bank that offers the best opportunities to its customers for keeping money deposited there. But beware.

Before you make any arrangements, be aware of what the penalties are for early withdrawals. If you know you might have difficulty leaving the money untouched, then you may want to consider a contract where the penalties are less severe even though the interest is not as high. Your banker can help you with these decisions, but in the long run, it is best to know yourself and make decisions accordingly.

The best way to see a return on the money you deposit in a bank is either through a certificate of deposit or a money market account.

The big advantage of a certificate of deposit (CD) is that it offers a greater return than any interest that may be earned in a traditional savings or checking account. Typically, the longer you agree to keep your money in a CD, the higher the interest rate. A CD can range in length from six months to five years or more. Often the interest rate will go up with the amount of money that is invested, as in the case of a jumbo CD. For any type of CD, there are substantial penalties for early withdrawal. (Typically, the penalty will be three months’ interest.) The nice thing about a CD is that the interest rate is locked in, no matter what the market does. But that can be a doubleedged sword; if the interest rates go up while your money is in a CD, you are still locked into the same rate.

A money market account is money that the bank uses to invest in short-term loans to government agencies and corporations. These accounts offer some of the benefits of both savings accounts and checking accounts, but they require a rather high minimum balance, usually $2,500 or more. The interest rate is generally higher than what a traditional savings or checking account, however, and the money market account is usually free because of the high minimum balance that is required. One disadvantage is that checks written against a money market account have a minimum standard of $100 or more. A regular checking account does put any restriction upon the amount written for a single check.

With the fees associated with traditional savings and checking accounts, such as the charge per ATM visit, the cost per check, the monthly fee, and the cost for a bounced check, it might be a good idea to talk to someone at your bank about investing in a CD or a money market account.

How to Choose A Hair Salon

BY CURT HAGEDORN Hard on the heels of picking a doctor, lawyer or accountant, choosing a hairdresser (or barber, or stylist, or whatever) is one of the most critical decisions you can make these days, whether you’re male or female.

Ignoring for the moment that the individuals who cut our hair, like bartenders, often also stand in as informal life coaches, today your hairdresser’s vision of who you are (and how well they and their team execute that vision) can catapult you to the head of the pack in the power/money/fashion matrix that dominates our culture, whether it’s in the boardroom or the singles bar. If you believe in the term “perception is reality” then hairdressers are kung fu masters in the ever more complex world of appearances.

If you’re unfortunate enough to have lost your stylist, or have never really found one who rocks your world, appearance wise, if only for the sake of your future happiness and success you need to make some time to concentrate on the search for the perfect hairdresser. A friend of mine and I recently joined

forces to plan a makeover for an extremely attractive but “hairstyle challenged” friend of ours who is embarking on an exciting new career, and I can tell you from personal experience that in many ways it’s really more about you, the client, than it is about the barber. So first things first, do your homework. Talk to all your friends and friends of friends, pore over your newspaper’s society pages and find out where those people get their fabulous hair cut. Whenever the local (or even national) talk shows are doing makeovers, write down who’s doing the hair. From this, you’ll be able to develop a hit list of potential choices. Next, set up an appointment: not for a cut (not yet) but for a ‘consultation for cut and color.’

Before you go, have at least some idea of what you absolutely do not want (like a buzzcut with green highlights.) Not only will this rule out the salons which seem to be turning out rainbow hair-dos on a regular basis, but you’ll at least be able to communicate the outer limits of your imagination to your stylist even if you don’t know what you do want. ion magazines, you can find your “celebrity twin” whose facial features and coloring most closely match your own and mimic their obviously expensively purchased “look,” but ultimately you need to create that bond of trust with a hairdresser that stands the test of time and fashion, so communication is key.

In your consultation appointment, be honest with the stylist (who may also bring in a colorist or other colleague) about everything. For example, if you prefer your hair long to the point of bursting into tears at the thought of having an inch of it removed, make that clear. Though they may eventually (and probably should) talk you into a short haircut, at least you’ll have had the conversation and know what’s coming. Never, ever, be intimidated by a hair professional or feel that your opinion isn’t important. If they’re the kind of hairdresser you’re looking for, they will be more than capable of using the information you give them to convince you to do the right thing, hair-wise. So let it all hang out, insecurities, childhood hair traumas, anything that might help them bring out your best self as opposed to the combination of self delusion, desperate clinging to youthful fads and other bad choices that has resulted in far to many Farrah-do’s and mullets walking the streets. Then, pick the stylist you feel most comfortable with, who’s taken the time to listen and who seems to understand that finding the right cut is a professional process, not a $100 bucks for 20 minutes transaction.

And my “hair challenged” friend? We eventually found her a salon whose owner had been feature on “Oprah,” right around the corner from where she lives. Her consultation with the stylist luckily resulted in an instant bond between them. She was confident enough to go ahead with what turned out to be a spectacular cut and, after a period of adjustment, has another appointment to consult about color. Inexpensive? No, but the confidence the transformation has already wrought is priceless.

While most people experience back pain at sometime in their life, in many cases back pain can be managed by keeping back muscles strong by staying active and making healthy choices.

Walking, swimming and stationary bike riding in conjunction with proper stretching and strengthening exercises are important in any workout routine. Exercise in conjunction with healthy eating and staying active are all ways to maintain your body’s optimum health. Before beginning any new diet regimen or exercise routine it is recommended that you consult your health care provider.

Unhealthy behaviors such as smoking impact many parts of the body, including reducing the blood supply to your back, reducing the nutrients to your muscles.

PRACTICE PROPER POSTURE In many cases back pain or injury can be avoided by maintaining good posture and when possible avoiding certain activities that may trigger back pain. This will vary by individual. Being mindful of good posture by not slouching, slumping or hunching over and sitting straight and standing tall go along ways to improving the health of your spine.

Avoid lifting and carrying health objects.

When lifting always bend at the knees instead of bending your back and keep your feet apart for stability and carry objects close to your body. At the office keep your muscles working by alternating positions frequently and using proper ergonomics while working on the computer and using your keyboard.

When doing household chores and gardening, avoid stooping, awkward bending and lifting heavy objects. Warm up muscles with simple stretching exercises before doing any physical activity.

SELF CARE REMEDIES Back pain should not and most often cannot be ignored. Unless there is a serious, underlying cause for the pain you are experiencing the best thing for treating back pain is to stay as active as possible. While bed rest was once believed to be an effective method of treatment, bed rest is no longer recommended. After an injury occurs, reducing physical activity for the first few days is recommended to help reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms, but gradually resuming your regular activities is the best medicine to

Below are some quick reminders for responding to a back injury or flare up: Ease pressure on the back by placing pillows under and between your knees while resting or sleeping.
