Health Care Deserves Corporations Co-opt Local Food an Honest Debate

BY MICHAEL B. KEEGAN Today, America is in the midst of an important struggle to reform our health care system. It's not surprising that a national debate about such a personal issue can raise passions, but health care reform demands an honest debate. So far, it hasn't been getting one.

Extremists opposed to the President's agenda have spent millions to cloud the real issues by claiming that President Barack Obama is a socialist and that health care reform is a plot by Democrats to turn America into some sort of Stalinist state.

Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey's lobbying firm has been paid to put out memos urging opponents of reform to shout down members of Congress who support reform to keep them from speaking.

On television, Pat Robertson took to Glenn Beck's show to warn Americans that President Obama is taking advantage of health care reform “to insert socialism and government control.” For his own part, Beck has accused Obama of hating for whites, stoking paranoid fantasies about "FEMA internment camps.” And Rush Limbaugh, Lou Dobbs, and others have decried the rise of "liberal fascism," and compared the Democratic Party to the Nazis and health care reform to the Holocaust.

In important debates like this one, it's more crucial than ever that we address our concerns with honesty and respect. So it's deeply disappointing that right-wing extremists and hatemongers interested in handing President Obama a defeat by stopping health insurance reform are propagating misinformation, fear, and distrust.

Anti-reform leaders have enthusiastically embraced the politics of fear to mobilize their base against sound measures to correct major problems with our current health care system, invoking outrageous scare tactics like the false claims that providing health care for all Americans will lead to “rationing” or that the President's initiative demands so-called “death panels.”

The health care debate has provided a forum for the right-wing to express its antigovernment, anti-reform views in the interest of supporting the status quo--an expensive and inefficient system in which 47 million people have no insurance at all.

But we shouldn't be surprised that there's a raucous minority attempting to

thwart change that can benefit all of us.

After all, we've seen it before.

When civil rights legislation passed in the middle of the last century, finally granting all Americans the ability to cast a vote that counts, many on the far right claimed that it would lead to the enslavement of white people. And before that, there were those who accused Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman of surrendering outright to communism.

It's disappointing that there are those who will react violently and aversely o any kind of change, but the lesson of our history is that if we pull together we can deliver the changes that are needed. After all, the 1960s civil rights movement is now, rightfully, considered one of the proudest moments in American history. FDR and Truman are now considered to be two of our finest presidents who, far from pushing communism, fought hard to protect democracy.

No matter how one feels about particular legislative proposals, we can all agree that the health care system we have now is broken. In the richest country in the world, few of us can be entirely certain that we'll even have health insurance just a year from now--jobs disappear, premiums rise, and insurance companies can drop coverage seemingly without reason.

That situation is intolerable, but fixing it will be hard work. A noisy and extreme minority will work hard to block any change at all. And it's a testament to our freedoms that their right to do so is unquestioned. But the rest of us can't be held hostage to the lies, the fear, and the misinformation of a few.

We need an honest conversation about health care, and although it would be best to be able to exchange ideas with those from across the political spectrum, it's clear that there are those who have shown that they have no interest in sitting at the grownup table. Yet our debate about health care is too important to be held up by those who are unwilling to participate in a meaningful way.

The big demand in food these days is that it be locally-produced. A new term has even been coined - "locavore" - to describe consumers who want the freshness and sense of community that comes from eating the bounty of small-scale, local producers.

You know, hometown guys like Frito-Lay and Hunt's Foods.

Proving that no standard of integrity is so pure that it can't be perverted by corporate profiteers, these giants of industrialized food production are reaching out with their deep-pocket advertising budgets to co-opt the locavore label.

Frito-Lay - a multinational, multibillion-dollar, agribusiness giant, that buys two billion pounds of spuds a year from hundreds of very large farmers to make Lay's potato chips - is presently running national television ads trying to convince viewers that its farmers are just local folks.

"We grow potatoes in Florida," declares one of its corporate providers in an ad imbued with bucolic, down home imagery. Not mentioned is that the potatoes he grows on a sprawling 800-acre spread end up as chips that are sold in New York, California... and beyond. Local?

ConAgra, the conglomerate that owns Hunt's tomatoes, concedes that it can't literally be local in the geographical sense. So, says a consultant working on Hunt's current locavore ad campaign, "the question is, how do we take [local] to that next level?"

In Corporate World, you see, "local" is not a place, but a figment of marketeering imagination.

Jessica Prentice, the food writer who coined the "locavore" tag, begs to differ with that definition. The local food movement, she explains, represents an ethic of small-scale production, ecologically-centered in a place, and based on personal relationships within a community. "Large corporations peddling junk food," she says, "are the exact opposite of what this is about."

The best advice for returning students begins with "be passionate" and ends with "be practical." Before making a decision, explore the possibilities by speaking to local colleges and universities and weighing all options.

BY BOB DIAMOND THE JEWISH EXODUS FROM VENEZUELA According to recent reports, the number of Jews in Venezuela has dramatically decreased, as “they no longer feel safe.” This is the second Jewish flight from Venezuela. The first started in 1825, when the Dutch Government of Curacao, anxious for mercantile trade, urged a group of Jews to emigrate to the nearby port city of Coro, Venezuela. Thirty years later, the Jews fled from Coro: victims of anti-Semitism and a corrupt, inept government. A few years after Jewish arrival in Coro, Creole merchants (born in the region but of Spanish ancestry), fearing competition, rioted to protest the rapid economic success of the Jewish merchants; thus setting the stage to drive the Jews from Venezuela. To settle the protest, the government imposed additional taxes against Coro’s Jewish merchants.

Despite the hostile environment, the Jewish merchants still prospered.

In the 1840’s, the “Jews lent the Coro municipal government advances in their taxes to battle certain shortcomings. The

national government found out and asked the Jews to stop advancing payments to Coro, as it was worried that the local military (where some of the money was going) was growing too powerful at the expense of the civilian rule. On January 30, 1855, unable to pay soldiers, the military dismissed the troops at Coro.” Two military officers fomented a riot that backfired, by distributing incendiary anti-Semitic pamphlets intending to intimidate the Jews into renewing loans.

A pamphlet blamed the Jews for the “misery and helplessness” of the populace. It warned the Jews to leave, claiming that “many daughters of Coro, previously models of virtue,” were being “prostituted by the Jews.” Two nights later, a band of armed men began “shooting at Jewish homes, tearing their doors down and looting their shops.”

Without government protection, the Jews fled Coro. The Dutch government protested that the law-abiding Coro Jews had the right to protection under international treaties. A cornered Venezuela agreed to pay damages and guaranteed the safe return of Coro’s former Jews. Few Jews returned.

There is a reminder of the past in a Coro cemetery where some of the original Jewish settlers are buried.

Investors continue worrying recovery may take longer

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Wall Street’s investors are expected to continue worrying about growing signs our economic recovery may take longer than first predicted.

But the Federal Reserve still insists the recession definitely is ending.

The latest job numbers from Payroll Processor ADP show private companies cut another 298,000 positions last month. That’s almost another 300,000 pink slips and we should never forget each one represents a real-live person who lost his or her job. And that had some analysts worried that the official unemployment numbers could be worse than expected. But, on the

upside, the latest private job losses still are the fewest since September 2008.

However, unemployment could be slowing down the housing recovery, which is one of the first solid signs of our possible national turnaround. The Mortgage Bankers’ Association reports that despite near-record low interest rates, mortgage applications dropped about 2 percent in August.

But overall U.S. economic productivity got a good boost last month because it was still up by about 6 percent.

Likewise, new factory orders, another key economic indicator, dropped at the end of August.

If investors start feeling a little better about the economy, we may start seeing some moderate gains again on Wall Street.

When dieting ‘timing is everything’

BY BARI AUERBACH According to a new study, choosing the right time to eat could make a difference in the amount of weight people gain. After noticing the tendency of shift workers to be overweight, a team of researchers from Northwestern University decided to investigate whether eating at times that conflict with the body’s natural circadian rhythms could be contributing to weight gain.

They conducted an experiment on two groups of lab mice; both groups were fed a highfat diet containing the same number of calories and both had about the same amount of exercise.

The difference came in the timing of their meals; one group was fed at night, which is the normal feeding time for mice since they are nocturnal, while the other group was fed during the day, which would be their normal resting time.

After six weeks, the mice fed at the “right” time had a 20 percent gain in their body weight, but the mice fed at the “wrong” time had a 48 percent gain. The wrong-time group also gained about 8 percent more body fat than the right-time feeders.

The researchers suggest eating late at night, when our body says we should be sleeping, disrupts our circadian rhythm, or internal clock, which governs not only our sleep cycles but feeding and activity cycles as well. It’s also important not to lose sight of the importance of total caloric intake. If you’re taking in excess calories daily, the time you eat probably doesn’t matter - you’ll still gain weight.

Eat this... drink that...

Great Presentation Excites Foodies - So why not do it all the time?

BY SHARI LYNN ROTHSTEIN-KRAMER Who says the summer is slow in Florida? Food events never stop. In the past few months, I have attended three Taste of the Nation events including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, NACE events (which stands for the National Association of Catering Executives) including a 3rd Annual Taste of NACE (where proceeds went to breast cancer) , the Marlins Community Foundation’s 3rd Annual Fish ‘N Chips event, The Sand Bake at Fairmont Turnberry, sampled various restaurants’ Miami Spice menus (okay, not an event, but still a $35 three-course meal at BLT Steak or Meat Market is a special occasion) and others too numerous to mention.

So, I go to all of these events—and many of the restaurants do the same circuit—so I became quite familiar with the chefs, the cuisine styles, how they set up their tables, and most of all, the overall presentation of the food. Some are impressive, some, well, not so much. I believe if you have a look, a style, a standard—never deviate. What you serve in your restaurant should look and be presented as close to “the same” no matter where it’s being served. After all, the same foodies who’ll attend these food and charity events are more than likely, the same folks who are or will be frequenting your eatery.

Restaurants need to constantly brand.

We, as patrons, recognize colors, logos, signature foods. We associate certain things with certain types of restaurants. With that said, let me give examples. Let’s say, for example, you are a classic steakhouse: please represent. At Taste of the Nation, Bourbon Steak cooked a seared yellowtail, which was good, but I want meat. If the logo is a cow, I want…meat. If I had never

eaten there before, I’d expect…meat. Filet, strip, a bite of rib-eye, even braised short ribs would do just fine!

Bar Rosso does a nice job (new on the scene and showcasing everywhere) of taking its concept of pairing Modern Italian food with wine by creating wine vignettes, grape displays, using lots of red and black (their colors, as well as always serving “new Italian” dishes. One of my favorite restaurants in all of South Florida, Timo, served Peach Cobbler at the Fish ‘N Chips event. While it was delish, it is Chef Tim Andriola’s exquisite savory dishes that will get people in the door. They do not do that much in the way of table design, but plates are artfully prepared and the food they serve never disappoints.

Bulldog Barbecue is one that works.

Howie Kleinberg serves up (get this)…barbecue. (imagine that). There are no surprises. It’s not too frou-frou, it’s not too plain, it is true to the brand and the food is great.

And while not in our beloved city of Aventura, the Miami Beach-based relative newcomer, Au Pied de Cochon, hit it on the head at the Taste of the Nation, with escargot Provencal and Meringues, delicate table coverings, and all things distinctly French.

If the time and expense of going to these events is taken, how can restaurants not give it their best effort? Sure, free food makes for a feeding frenzy, but think of it as an investment. I know I will, as will many of my friends, go to the places that impress us the most. So, take pride in serving the masses you do not think you’ll ever see again. You just might be pleasantly surprised.

Label Maker

BY PATRICIA C. FRANK There is a gadget that prints your name or any message you want on a selfadhesive strip of plastic that can be attached to almost anything. This gadget is called a label maker.

Some people use it more than others and some people never use it at all. Once attached to something it can be difficult to remove.

Even if you do not use this machine, you are still labeling things in your life, all the time, all day long. A label is a descriptive word or a short classifying phrase that is attached to an object, event, situation, behavior or a person. These labels may be positive or negative, good or bad, happy or sad, a blessing or a curse.

As a label maker you have tremendous power. You assign everyone and everything to a category. As a boss you name each employee. One may be conscientious, another unreliable. Co-workers label each other as well. As a parent you label all of your children with certain traits. You label your family members and their behavior. You label your friends and everyone in your life be it the waiter or the shoemaker. You also label everything that happens to you.

It is possible that these labels are not true

or accurate.However, you will respond to the person and the situation based on the interpretations and judgments you make. As a result, you may react inappropriately.

It is the label you give to someone or something that makes you happy or sad. All objects, events, situations and people are basically neutral. Nothing of itself is one way or another. You are the one who provides a particular emotional or psychological name to them. You are the one who decides if it hurts you or upsets you or if it pleases and delights you.

If you want to increase your happiness and inner peace, you can avoid labeling and you can also re-label things. Labels are limiting and they should not be permanent. Just like the plastic strips, from the machine, that are hard to remove, the labels you have assigned to people and events, may be hard to remove. But, they can be removed. New labels can be made.

Try going a whole day without labeling anyone, any behavior or any event. Suspend your interpretations and judgments. Remove the emotional and psychological connotations and implications. Notice the difference it makes.

HOA and Condominium Associations in Cash Crisis BY: BEN SOLOMON, ESQ.

Many homeowners and condominium associations throughout South Florida are experiencing a cash crisis as a result of owners failing to pay their required maintenance assessments.

Without this necessary income, the associations bills pile up quickly leaving important services such as insurance, lawn care, management, and maintenance unpaid for, with some vendors unwilling to provide further services. Severe cases can leave associations without enough money to maintain basic necessities such as fire and safety equipment, security gates, and even water and garbage services. To make matters worse, some lenders are refusing to issue loans on the units within these communities and condominiums due to the severe delinquency rates of the associations, essentially putting a freeze on the marketability of such units. Much of the problem can be attributed to investors, many of whom own multiple units in the same community or condominium, not paying their assessments (some of whom receive income from tenants living in their units but still refuse to pay their assessments).

An association’s best course of action is to find a competent, diligent and aggressive attorney. Legal incompetence (including not utilizing effective legal strategies for the current market), an attorney’s inability to communicate with the board and manager of the association, and/or the failure of an attorney to proceed aggressively and diligently on behalf of the association, can cause unnecessary delays and additional financial suffering. For instance, some attorneys advise their clients to follow the passive approach of not filing liens against delinquent units and not proceeding with association foreclosures, thinking that lenders will eventually foreclose their defaulted borrowers and pay the association its money. The reality is that in today’s market, lenders are stalling their foreclosures until they find buyers first, so the process can take an unreasonably long period of time. Meanwhile, if the first mortgage holder does finally take title to the unit through its foreclosure, it is then entitled by law to a sizeable write off of the prior owner's past due amounts, resulting in significant bad debt to the association. This bad debt is then absorbed by the association and eventually paid for by the responsible owners who are paying their assessments.

To succeed in the current market, associations need an aggressive attorney who files liens against the delinquent unit owners quickly and, in applicable cases, files foreclosure complaints (lawsuits) against the delinquent unit owners to collect the amounts due to the association. There is also a new blanket receivership approach where, by law, associations can petition the court to appoint a single receiver to collect the rents from all tenants living in units that are under foreclosure by the association or which come under foreclosure in the future (which prohibits investors from collecting income from tenants while failing to pay their assessments).
