Aventura Marketing Council recognizes Det. Anthony Angulo Det. Angulo was assigned to investigate a case of a suspicious death that occurred in November of 2007. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Captain that originally responded to the scene, along with hospital personnel noticed inconsistencies and advised same to police units. Angulo immediately took charge of the lengthy investigation, speaking with the victim's husband, following up with Aventura Crime Scene units and personnel from the Medical Examiner's office. The detective met with some resistance from the husband, who had become the focus of the investigation, when he retained counsel and refused to speak with him. Both the families of the suspect and the victim also declined to speak with Angulo. Undeterred, he continued to gather information that exposed flaws in the suspect's tale and was able to piece together his actions on the night before the victim's death. Angulo conducted countless interviews, obtained statements from Fire-Rescue personnel, directed Crime Scene's process at the

site of the crime as well as the hospital. After many months of hard work and dedication to this case Det. Angulo drafted an arrest warrant for second degree homicide and the suspect was taken into custody, without incident.

Biscayne Academy music showcase pits rap against violence

A special performance of music held recently at the Biscayne Institutes marked the culmination of a two-year program underwritten by The Children's Trust.

“The program is focused on writing and music skills to teach non-violence," said Dr. Marie A. DiCowden, a nationally known healthcare psychologist who is founder and program director for the Biscayne Institutes, which oversees the Biscayne Academy, a fully accredited school for children living with disabilities.

The grant program was called "Rappers for Peace." Dr. DiCowden said participants are at-risk children and youth faced with the increased violence, drugs and gang activities that plague Miami, especially in northeast Miami-Dade County. The program was launched, she said, because youths with disabilities from economically disadvantaged areas have been shown to be the most vulnerable as targets of violence and

gang recruitment.

"Participants were taught through didactics, group therapy and music," Dr. DiCowden said. "They were encouraged to write music celebrating violence-prevention and then perform it for their peers and interested members of the community.”

"The program provides an opportunity to reinforce learning about violence prevention through a well recognized medium to reinforce positive, rather than simply negative, values."

She said Biscayne Institutes is looking for ongoing sponsorships for such programs. Biscayne Academy participates in the Florida Scholarship Opportunity program, and accepts John McKay scholarships for children with varying exceptionalities and disabilities. Admissions are on a quarterly basis and require an interview.

Aventura Hospital appoints Denise J. O'Connell as director of behavioral health services Aventura Hospital is proud to announce the appointment of Denise J. O'Connell as the new director of behavioral health and detoxification services.

O'Connell is a State of Florida licensed mental health counselor with a master's degree in counseling psychology from Nova Southeastern University and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

She returns to Aventura Hospital having previously served as the director of behavioral health services from 1998 to 2002.

Treatment for these patients takes place in a safe, private and nurturing hospital-based setting under the supervision of specially trained physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. The quality treatment provided at the Renewed Hope Center precedes rehabilitation at any 12step program facility.

As director of behavioral health services, O'Connell's responsibilities include managing the Renewed Hope Center and also overseeing the two in-patient behavioral health treatment programs that make up the high-risk behavioral health services department, designed to care for patients suffering from severe psychoses.

Every day, injured and sick Floridians worry about whether they will be able to get better—and whether they can afford to. Millions of Americans across the country wonder if they can even continue to pay for routine care to stay healthy and prevent disease before it starts.

Some American families are lucky enough to have health care. Others don’t have that luxury right now. But even the most fortunate of us are still paying high premiums, co-pays and deductibles.

You deserve access to the same kind of insurance that I have as a Member of Congress. I get to choose from a variety of plans from a number of companies, so that I can choose the level of coverage that is right for my family.

Since 2000 alone, average family premiums have increased by 88 percent in Florida. Roughly 9.8 million people in Florida get health insurance at work, where family premiums average $12,780 – about the annual earning of a full-time minimum wage job.

Twenty-one percent of middle-income Florida families spend more than 10 percent of their income on health care. Even families with a steady income can’t hope for reasonable premium costs.

And we cannot forget the millions of uninsured in this country. Twenty-one percent of Floridians are uninsured, and 73 percent of them are in families with at least one full-time worker.

For these uninsured families this isn’t just a matter of cost or inconvenience.

A recent study shows that more than six working age Floridians die every day because they don’t have health insurance (study by Families USA released 3/2008).

The number of Floridians who get health insurance through their employer continues to decline - by three percent between 2000 and 2007 alone. Much of the decline is among workers in small businesses: While small businesses make up 78 percent of Florida businesses, only 39 percent of them offered health coverage benefits in 2006 – down 7 percent since 2000.

All of these statistics can only lead me to the conclusion that our health care system is broken. We may have the best health care in the world, but when tens of millions of Americans don’t have access

to that health care and millions more are under-insured or in danger of losing their health insurance, then the system has stopped working.

We need to work together to build a better way to take care of our citizens— one that covers every American and guarantees you have coverage whether or not you have a preexisting condition, or a job.

That is why I am fighting in Congress for a better health care system that costs less, covers more, and leaves no American without health care. Our goal is to make a competitive, fair marketplace for health care.

Let me be clear: if you like your current plan, you’ll be able to keep it. Rather, we will build on our current system, so we can give you the freedom to choose what works best for you and your family. If you like your doctor, keep your doctor. If you like your current plan, keep your current plan. If you don’t, or if you don’t have one, then get one that works for you.

Our goal in Congress is to offer you a choice of doctors and plans, and guarantee affordable, quality health care for all. The program will ensure every American child is covered with the health care they need to grow up strong and healthy, with the assurance that they will never get turned away from the care they need and deserve.

We need this change for several reasons.

Right now, you can be denied health care coverage for a preexisting condition.

With our new system, a preexisting condition won’t disqualify you.

Right now, you can lose coverage if you lose your job. With our new system, health needs will be covered by insurance that can never be taken away, even if your employer drops your insurance, you change jobs, or you’re out of work.

Right now, health care costs disadvantage American companies in the global economy—small businesses are sometimes forced to choose between coverage and layoffs. With our new system, this will not happen.

The solution we are proposing in Congress is uniquely American because it builds on the best of what works, fostering competition among insurance plans, while still focusing on patients’ needs, not corporate profits.

To truly have the best health care in the world, we need to insure that every American has access to it and that’s precisely what we are working on in Congress.

Reading Alison Weir’s article “Saving Americans by saving money” (Aventuranews, June 24-30), one cannot but be amazed at what is a magnificent mix of fact and fiction all intertwined in an essay that represents, more than anything, the flight of fancy. To try and disassemble, piece by piece, the different elements of pure invention and imaginary statistics would necessitate a 20 page reply.

Rather than debunking the heap of nonsense lavished upon the reader by Ms. Weir, I will limit myself to stating a number of obvious points. I repeat: by not attacking her ludicrous data and statistics, I am not legitimizing them – I am simply ignoring them, much as one should ignore the ranting of a village idiot, shouting that the earth is flat and the sun is in fact an egg (sunny side up).

It is a fact that Israel is the only true democracy in the Middle East. It is America’s staunchest ally in the world, and the only country between Western Africa and the Far East that shares America’s ideals and values. For America, Israel is a strategic ally whose partnership strengthens American presence in the region – clearly a matter of US national security interest.

It is a fact that approximately 75% of US aid to Israel is spent in the American market, by law. Thus, the money America sends to Israel comes back to the American defense sector, promoting growth and expansion and creating employment for Americans.

It is a fact that every Israeli government has put peace with our neighbors on the top of its agenda. Every opinion poll ever taken in Israel shows the vast majority of Israelis wish to live in peace with their

neighbors, even at the cost of making painful concessions – as Israel has done many times. The vast majority of Arabs, on the other hand, would like to destroy Israel.

Most refuse to even recognize Israel’s right to exist. Thus, blaming Israel for all the wars in the region is ridiculous at best, malevolent and blatantly false – at worst.

In fact, Arab and Muslim terrorism began in the early 20th century – as a movement against western values and democracy. It has nothing to do with Israel.

But let us go back to the main premise of Ms. Weir’s article. She claims that if only America stops aiding Israel, there will be peace in the Middle East, the world will be safer and there will be no more international terrorism. Actually, the only result of such a move will be to make Israel weaker, thereby strengthening the hand of terrorists all over the world who will realize that America is unable to defend democracy and human rights. Peace will not be achieved by taking away Israel’s shield of defense: that will create more war and bloodshed. Global terrorism will not end.

Al Qaeda will not abandon its hate of America. Iran will not stop its homicidal development of a nuclear weapon. On the contrary: they will be emboldened. Peace will be achieved when the Arabs realize that Israel cannot be destroyed and that they must live in peace.

Alison Weir is deceiving her readers by saying that US aid to Israel should be eliminated in order to make this a better world. What she really means is that Israel should be eliminated in order to make this a better world. Despite your wishful thinking, Ms. Weir, the US-Israeli alliance will continue, guaranteeing Israel’s existence and providing America with its only loyal ally in a strategic region, thus preserving American national security interests.

Aventura artist Marlyn Klepach extends "Multifaceted" business to include handmade jewelry

BY JEREIMA FERRER At first glance, Marlyn Klepach's paintings might seem bold and straight forward. Then they jump and grab at you in an emotional entanglement by her use of vibrant hues and semiprecious stones that convey luminous and embellished mystical scenes.

Most people recognize her giant oversized 6-8 foot hearts of which 15 finished works are currently the centerpiece in her design studio.

"The bigger the heart, the better," she jokes.

Her paintings have a Spanish flare. She has even given many including "La Alegria Alarga la Vida" and "Alcanza Quien no Cansa" Spanish titles to celebrate her Cuban heritage. Her paintings illustrate collages of tangible items including newspaper cuttings, pearls, semiprecious stones, coral and turquoise. But Marlyn is truly inspired by the numerous heart pieces she has created on canvas by using semiprecious stones and her unique collage technique.

"Like Picasso's blue period, I'm going through my red heart period now," she says.

Marlyn also adds the sense of touch to her paintings for the blind. Her embellished creations are three dimensional and were inspired by a friend. "I feel like it is important for people who can't see my art, to feel it," she said.

Her creations have garnered her recognition from early on. In high school, she accepted the keys to Miami Beach for her first creation, "Batiking" which is a textile piece that took her nine months to complete.

She attended Parsons School of design in New York where her talent flourished.

Marlyn's business, Multifaceted, has grown to include not only her paintings but also stunning handmade jewelry.

Her jewelry creations range from whimsical to classy pieces including bracelets and necklaces out of onyx, turquoise and for a more vintage look, she uses rubies and pearls.

"I design my jewelry to suit each unique individual taking into consideration the personality and taste of the client," she says.

IDB Bank hosts Bnai Zion Foundation networking event

BY JEREIMA FERRER IDB Bank recently hosted Bnai Zion Foundation for a dynamic evening of networking in their Aventura Corporate offices located in Aventura Harbour Center at 18851 NE 29th Avenue, Suite 600. Bnai Zion's local president Gerald Schwartz along with IDB first vice president and head of private banking Ed Smith mingled with over 40 attendees including bankers and local business owners.

"This event brought new exposure for both organizations," said Bnai Zion regional director Eileen Glastein.

Glastein along with IDB's assistant vice president Kevin Wolnik organized the event for these two Israeli organizations.

Both organizations benefited greatly from sharing their friends.

After tasting a selection of wines from Israel, a bazaar with unusual items was available for purchase with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the foundation.

Bnai Zion is a humanitarian organization whose work spans over a century. The foundation raises money for several projects including a school, hospital, home for at-risk children and a library in Israel. With divisions throughout the world, the Foundation works hard to insure the success of its projects.

LC: Aventura Worldwide Transportation Services is well-known for its charitable work. How do you choose the charities you support?

LC: Have you made any changes to the company's marketing and planning strategies?

ST: Based on the present economic climate, we have shifted our marketing to focus on new areas of potential revenue, including a stronger emphasis on providing service for weddings. Furthermore, we're concentrating on our current client base by developing various value packages. For example, if multiple couples in the Aventura area are attending a social event, it's very cost-effective and socially responsible to share in the price of chauffeured transportation while maximizing their evening's experience. We have an extensive fleet of extended Lincoln Town Cars, SUVS, vans, limousines, specialty vehicles, buses and motorcoaches.

We're also developing shuttle relationships that promote our new social responsibility campaign to combat drinking and driving. Our slogan is, "Play Responsibly. When You Drink, Let Us Drive."

This will end badly Q: I am 21 years old, and I have a big crush on a man who is 36. We work at the same college police department, where I am a secretary and part-time student and he is a sergeant, so we are around each other all day long. No one at work knows about it, but we have become intimate.

The reason I’m writing is that I am worried about his past. He has been engaged three times, and I also know he just ended an affair with a married woman. My friend tells me I am too young for him and a fool if I get involved in a serious relationship with him. She also said that most police officers end up divorced because they are always stressed out. I don’t have anyone older that I can talk to about this, so I hope you can give me some advice before I do something I am going to regret, or get hurt very badly.

A: It sounds to me like you have already done that “something” since you have a crush

on him and are intimate. There is no way that you are going to just walk away from him without feeling miserable, especially since you see him all the time. But I think your friend is right, and you probably also realize that this is going to end badly. The odds that the two of you are going to get married and live happily ever after are very slim.

Of course many relationships wind up ending, and I always tell people that while they can’t forget what happened, hopefully they have enough good memories from when they were both in love that they don’t regret the experience. And that’s the crux of your problem. You love him, but does he love you? Or is he simply using you to satisfy his own needs as he did with those other women - and eventually will just move on the way he has in the past?

This has nothing to do with being a policeman, as most policemen make very good husbands. Yes, they are under more pressure than those in other professions, and it can affect their marriages, but the situation isn’t so bad that you should write off every police officer. But it does seem to me that this one sergeant has demonstrated a pattern of behavior that should make you suspicious. I believe that if you can find the strength to break this off now, you will avoid some pain in the long run. More importantly, you’ll give yourself the opportunity of finding a new boyfriend who really will love you.

Similarly, eat baked potatoes without the butter or sour cream. *If you have a craving for sugar or junk food, eat a serving of a naturally sweet fruit like strawberries or a melon. *Avoid excess sodium, such as in salt, dietetic foods, and artificially sweetened drinks. Sodium retains excess water in the body. Instead of a diet soda, drink iced tea with lemon. *If you must drink milk or eat milk products, use only those made from nonfat milk. *Fry nothing. Broil, boil or bake fish and chicken. Try broiling fish or chicken over a charcoal fire for added flavor. Before cooking poultry, remove the skin, which contains large amounts of fat. *Steam vegetables instead of boiling them.

Boiling leaches out too many vitamins and minerals. Do not add butter or margarine to the steamed vegetables. *Cook with herbs and spices as much as possible. By using different kinds, you can easily make chicken breasts taste different every day of the week.

BY DENISE RUBIN Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd, buy me some peanuts and …. Hooray for baseball and its stars! One of the brightest new stars in baseball is Jose Miguel Cabrera.

Cabrera, born in 1983, in Venezuela. The one-time shortstop for the Florida Marlins is undeniably meant for greatness in the Professional Baseball League. Cabrera is a Major League Baseball first baseman for the Detroit Tigers. He is a 2x Silver Slugger Award winner, a 4x All-Star selection, a World Series champion, and a home run champion. He is the third youngest player to accumulate 500 RBI. Hall of Famers Mel Ott and Ted Williams were the only players to precede him in this feat. In March 2008, Cabrera reached an agreement with the Tigers on an eight year, $153.3 million contract extension. At the time the fourth largest in baseball history behind Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, and Manny Ramirez. It is the largest in Texas history.

For trivia sake, Deion Sanders was the first player in history to hit a homerun in the MLB and score a touchdown in the NFL in the same week (1989). A feat even Michael Jordan couldn’t realize. A past client referred me to Sanders for his Real Estate goals and that is my home run.
