While Continental also goes to bat for Aventura by sponsoring the city's little league program, Mike Dee, Dick Anderson and Tony Segreto explained Super Bowl XLIV paired with the Pro Bowl was played in South Florida for a record tenth time this year and now – an “all-star” community effort can help bring the game back to Sun Life Stadium in 2014 and beyond.

Mount Sinai Medical Center teams up with Classic Residence by Hyatt for community lecture series

Mount Sinai Medical Center teamed up with Classic Residence by Hyatt on April 20th for a special community lecture series. It was the first time both organizations collaborated and resulted in an outstanding opportunity to continue to educate our community on various medical issues.

Almost 90 people attended the lecture held in Aventura given by Dr. Daniel Varon, one of Mount Sinai Medical Center's top neurologists as he spoke about memory disorders.

Though it was a serious topic, Dr. Varon lightened the mood with anecdotes as he presented vital information on dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and even forgetfulness. Classic resident Rabbi Sy Friedman said, “It was great learning that the many times I don't remember things, for my age (88), it is

expected. I was pleased to know that I am in good shape, and as a matter of fact, I realized that I am less forgetful perhaps than I should be."

Evelyn Aimis of Evelyn Aimis Fine Art, recently held a high-end warehouse art auction to raise funds to support the humanitarian efforts of American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA), which provides Israel's pre-hospital emergency medical needs including disaster, ambulance and blood services. It was after attending a fundraising dinner at Porto Vita for the AFMDA Emergency Disaster Fund that Evelyn was moved to use her art to help save lives.

Justice James C. McReynolds: an anti-Semite, Racist and Misogynist

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Despite the established custom of having an annual official photograph of the justices of the Supreme Court, none exists for 1924. Chief Justice William Howard Taft cancelled the portrait that year because Justice James C. McReynolds, a blatant anti-Semite and a racist, refused to sit next to Justice Louis D. Brandeis (where he belonged that year based on seniority) because Brandeis was the first Jewish Justice. Although McReynolds and Brandeis were both appointed years earlier by Democratic President Woodrow Wilson, McReynolds refused to speak to Brandeis for three years following his appointment and habitually left the conference room when Brandeis spoke. When Brandeis retired in 1939, McReynolds refused to sign the customary retirement dedicatory letter. When President Herbert C. Hoover was considering appointing Benjamin Cardozo to the Supreme Court, McReynolds urged Hoover

not to “afflict the Court with another Jew.” McReynolds would often hold a document in front of his face when Cardozo delivered an opinion from the bench and, reportedly, never spoke to Cardozo during their many years together on the bench. McReynolds refused to sign opinions authored by Brandeis or Cardozo. He did not attend the Supreme Court Memorial Ceremonies in honor of Cardozo and refused to attend Felix Frankfurter’s swearing in, stating, “My God, another Jew on the Court.” In 1922, he refused to attend a Court ceremonial function, advising Taft in writing that he did not wish to be with a Hebrew.

McReynolds was also a misogynist. He would often leave the bench when a woman lawyer rose in court to present her case. He refused to accept “Jews, drinkers, blacks, women, smokers, married or engaged individuals as law clerks.” His judicial opinions opposed President FDR’s New Deal legislation, including the Social Security Act. Taft considered McReynolds to be an “able man,” but found him to be “selfish to the last degree…and fuller of prejudice than any man I have ever known.” McReynolds, who served on the Court from 1914 until 1941, died a lonely death in 1946 without a single friend or relative at his bedside. No member of the Court attended his funeral.

Quebec-Florida Chamber helps promote trade

BY JEAN FRANCOIS GERVAIS Just a beginning The Quebec-Florida Chamber of Commerce was created by a group of entrepreneurs from both Quebec and Florida in June 2009 and the main goal is to promote and facilitate trade and business development. Since then, the Chamber has accomplished several realizations.

Among other things, the CCQF has successfully led a trade mission to Florida from February 23rd to 26th with 9 Quebec entrepreneurs. Ros-Lehtinen condemns Syria’s “Grave Violation” of United Nations Security Council Resolution

Ileana RosLehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on reports that Syria is furnishing Hezbollah with Scud missiles that could strike Israeli cities, in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Statement by RosLehtinen: “If Syria is indeed arming Hezbollah with Scuds, it would be a grave violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

“This news reiterates the threat posed by the Syria-Iran-Hezbollah axis, and reinforces why responsible nations cannot sit idly by as violent extremists enhance their capabilities and become more and more dangerous by the day.

“Instead of sending an Ambassador to Damascus, we should quickly impose the full range of existing sanctions against Syria. Congress must also quickly pass pending legislation to ratchet up the pressure on the Syrian regime.”

Note: United Nations Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) called for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon and prohibited the sale or supply of arms and related materiel to any forces in Lebanon other than the Government of Lebanon.

Ros-Lehtinen is the author of H.R. 1206, the Syria Accountability and Liberation Act which, among other measures, strengthens sanctions targeting Syria’s energy infrastructure. This legislation currently has over 80 cosponsors. Ros-Lehtinen was also the co-author and lead Republican cosponsor of the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003 (Public Law 108-175).

Fragile Handle with Care

Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING If something is fragile it is breakable, and it can be easily broken. Some things by their very nature are fragile. Humans Beings can also be fragile and breakable.

Physically their bodies can break down and they can become sick. Emotionally their hearts can break, they can become brokenhearted. Psychologically their spirit can break or be broken by others. People underestimate how fragile they are.

People should have the same words that you see stamped on boxes, stamped on them “Fragile handle with care.”

Because you are fragile, you are also very vulnerable. You can be easily wounded or harmed emotionally and psychologically. When you are vulnerable you are unprotected and you are defenseless. When you are vulnerable you are exposed to the possibility of being damaged. When your spirit or your heart is broken you are literally shattered.

It is not uncommon to have a miscon-

ception about how strong you are as a person during certain life events. How many times have you heard, “Be strong.”? So much importance is placed on being strong that it is only natural to try to hold up, hold on and hold it together no matter what.

Strength is highly valued in our society that there is a tendency to ignore the reality of the situation. It is not uncommon to pretend to be stronger than you actually feel.

People forget that placing stress or tension on anything or anyone over time makes it more susceptible to breakage. It doesn’t matter how hard or strong it is to begin with, eventually it will break. At certain times in your life you may be more fragile than at other times in your life. It is important to recognize and be aware of those times. It is important to accept those feelings in yourself and to handle yourself with care.

It is also important to tell those around you that you are feeling fragile. People seldom see your vulnerability so they may harm you and hurt you inadvertently. They have no way of knowing how fragile you may feel or how fragile you truly are. It is a good idea to tell them, “Please, be gentle I am feeling very fragile right now.”

Seniors to benefit from new Health Reform Law

BY CONGRESSWOMAN DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ MAmerica’s “Greatest Generation” has truly seen the ups and downs of the last century. Through the Great Depression, World War II, the Civil Rights era, and the Great Society, our seniors have faced hardships and worked to defend and build our nation. America’s seniors also understand the importance of the economic and health safety net established during their lifetime.

They have earned the retirement security that seniors enjoy today through Social Security and Medicare.

Recognizing the success of these programs and how they complement our society, we used them as blueprints to write the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, comprehensive health care legislation that will grant health security to all Americans while strengthening Medicare for future generations. This new law provides American families and small businesses more control over their health care by reducing costs, increasing choice, and instituting common sense rules that will keep insurance companies honest. At the same time, it puts our budget on a more sta-

ble path by reducing our deficit by $143 billion over the next ten years and an additional $1.2 trillion over the following decade.

There has been a lot of misinformation specifically targeted at seniors. But, let me assure you: the bill makes NO cuts to current payments or guaranteed benefits in Medicare. In the meantime, this legislation makes quality investments in seniors’ health by strengthening preventative care, prescription drugs, and the financial stability of your coverage.

Some of the most substantial changes will immediately improve Medicare for the 102,000 beneficiaries in my Congressional district. For example, in the next 90 days, seniors who hit the Medicare Part D prescription drug “Donut Hole” will receive a $250 rebate to make life-saving drugs more affordable. Then, significant discounts of 50% and higher will close the “Donut Hole” completely by 2020. This translates to typical savings of $250 in 2010, $700 in 2011, and over $3,000 by 2020.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act also eliminates out-of-pocket expenses for preventative services in Medicare, so that no senior will ever have to skip a colonoscopy, or immunization because of prohibitive co-pays. In the

meantime, this legislation returns fiscal responsibility and careful oversight to the program, by targeting rampant waste, fraud, and abuse. It roots out overpayments to insurance companies that are robbing the system of funds that could be used to improve benefits for everyone. In doing so, we protect and strengthen Medicare for today’s seniors and future generations of retirees by extending the life of Medicare by an additional nine years or more.

Medicare has been a lifeline for America’s seniors for the last 44 years, and for all 44 of those years, Democrats have been staunch supporters of the program.

One of the most misleading suggestions out there is that this legislation we passed will take away Medicare Advantage from seniors satisfied with their coverage. That is simply not true. Rather, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires these private plans to give seniors the security they deserve – by ending overpayments, waste, and high cost-sharing for expensive medical procedures. Currently, subsidies to fund Medicare Advantage cost $11 billion a year; this results in $90 in higher premiums per couple for traditional Medicare beneficiaries to cover the cost of Medicare Advantage.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

requires that all Medicare Advantage plans spend at least 85% of revenue on medical care and improving the quality of care, rather than on profits and overhead costs and no longer be permitted to charge more than traditional Medicare for expensive services.

This legislation also provides immediate help for older Americans age 55 to 64, who have become the fastest growing demographic of the uninsured in America.

This legislation ends discrimination for pre-existing conditions. This is vital for older Americans between retirement and Medicare, when they are most likely to have acquired a pre-existing condition during the course of their lifetime and are struggling to find insurance on the individual market.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act does all of this without cutting Medicare’s guaranteed benefits that are so important to the health and vitality of our Greatest Generation.

Celebrate Art of Storytelling at Miami-Dade County Library

Storytellers from around the world will take center stage in downtown Miami on Saturday, May 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the Miami-Dade Public Library System hosts its 10th annual Art of Storytelling (AOS) International Festival, at the Main Library, 101 W Flagler St. A magical adventure awaits the entire community during this free event where storytellers from Argentina, Canada, Ireland, Brazil and the U.S. will join the cast of the Bit’s ‘N’ Pieces Puppet Theatre; Mother Goose, Little Red Riding Hood, Madeline, Geddy the Gecko, and many others to share stories from a wealth of cultures and traditions.

The festival also will feature the Geeta Dias: Bollywood Indian Dancers, Momentum Dance Company, Ife-Ile Afro-Cuban dancers, Esquilo Prieto’s Capoeira Dancers, steel band music, a Bahamian Junkanoo parade, a Teen Zone with video gaming competition and Cosplay contests. And how long does it take to recoup the cost?

A local CBS4 viewer recently bought a GMC Sierra hybrid to try and stretch his gas money. The Delray Beach resident said his dealer claimed it could get as much as 25 miles to the gallon. With money so tight today and people trying to pinch pennies, he thought he was making the right move.

He bought the truck to replace an older pickup that was not as fuel efficient as the mileage he saw noted in his new Sierra Hybrids’ fuel economy ratings. His old truck only got about 17 miles per gallon, so he hoped his new hybrid would be a lot more cost efficient. But he said it wasn’t, and that 17 mpg is still about the highest mileage he gets no matter how he drives.

He wanted us to know about his trucks’ real-world gas mileage.

“It’s really not fair and that’s why I called you guys,” he complained. “They’re taking money from people and they’re selling something that’s really not what they’re saying it is.”

Hybrid technology remains popular with most carmakers who are trying to give consumers more fuel efficient vehicles in these days of rising gas prices. But some hybrid owners say they are disappointed they’re not getting the fuel economy they thought they were paying for. It turns out some of the latest fuel economy ratings on the most popular hybrids list their gas mileage at more than 50 miles per gallon.

But do they really deliver the fuel-savings they advertise?

The Southeast manager for GM’s Chevy Division says he got better-than-expected gas mileage from his hybrid truck. But he warns that hybrids get their best gas mileage under some very specific driving condi-

tions, adding, “Hybrids perform better in the city, and for anyone who’s environmentally sensitive, it’s the right vehicle?”

Who else has experience with Hybrids?

Miami-Dade County has a fleet of them and may have more long-term experience than anyone else around South Florida. The fuel economy of its 319 hybrid Toyota and Honda cars ranges from 26 to 50 miles per gallon with a combined fleet average of about 40 miles per gallon.

And what about its much smaller hybrid truck fleet? Figures obtained by CBS4 News reveal it only gets a combined average of about 11.5 miles per gallon on its six hybrids. Because of consumer complaints about inflated EPA fuel ratings, fuel economy testing was recently changed to reflect more real-world results.

In many cases, the new testing lowered vehicle mileage ratings. And that leaves a lot of potential car buyers confused.

I spoke with a new car shopper in Hollywood who isn’t so sure a new hybrid is in his future.

“If you look at the extra costs, it’s still too expensive and doesn’t make much sense,” he said. “But if I wanted to go green for the environment and spend the money to do it, it’s the way to go.”

Several class action lawsuits are making their way through the courts, claiming hybrids didn’t deliver the great fuel economy consumers expected. Fortunately though, there are other options for consumers looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Thanks to new technology, some carmakers confirm their conventional engines are just as clean to operate, get almost as good gas mileage and are cheaper to buy than a hybrid. In fact, carmakers around the world are rushing to start marketing the first mass-produced, affordable electric car, although that may still be several years away.

LET’S TALK CARS The 2010 Mitsubishi Galant continues as an economical family sedan with nice styling and lots of advanced technology, but don’t look for it with a six-cylinder engine anymore.

The front-wheel drive Galant — built in the Mitsubishi plant in Normal, IL — is offered this year in only two trim levels, ES and SE, both powered by a 160-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a four-speed automatic transmission with a Sportronic manual shift mode.

The V-6 Sport and Ralliart models have been dropped from the lineup, though the MIVEC four-cylinder engine has been revised and has an improved highway fuel economy rating (21/30 mpg).

Since the Galant got an extensive redesign last year, there are few styling changes in the 2010 edition. Galant rides on a 108.3-inch wheelbase and has an overall length of 191.1 inches. It delivers a respon-

sive performance and crisp handling.

Both the ES and more upscale SE models have a new silver painted mesh front grille, better aerodynamics and a more upscale look, while interior sound insulation has been improved to reduce cabin noise.

All 2010 Galants come with a host of standard handling aids for improved driver control in virtually all situations, including anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), traction control (TCL), and Active Stability Control (ASC). The Galant also has advanced dual-stage front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side front- and rear-curtain airbags, an engine immobilizer, and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

The ES comes with 16-inch wheels, auto-off headlights, air conditioning, cruise control and a CD player, while the SE gets 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a colorkeyed rear spoiler and a chrome exhaust finisher. The SE also comes standard with gray and black sport fabric-trimmed heated front seats, automatic climate control, eight-way power driver’s seat, steering wheel audio controls, fog lights, heated side view mirrors, and theft-deterrent alarm system.

Galant models have a silver painted mesh front grille, improved aerodynamics and upscale styling.

All Galants come with an auxiliary audio input jack for iPod and MP3 playback, while SE trims get an upgraded 650-watt Rockford Acoustic Design premium audio system with six-disc CD/MP3 playback and eight speakers and a standard DVDbased navigation system with a rear-view backup camera. Included with the system is SIRIUS Satellite Radio with a three-month pre-paid subscription and Bluetooth wire-

less connectivity.

“Oxygen’s Pick It Kick It,” the new fatloss book promising “little changes for big results” is packed with tons of information and more than 1,000 simple but effective food substitutions that make losing fat easy.

The May issue of “Oxygen” women’s fitness magazine features a preview of the book by Diane Hart, the magazine’s executive editor, which includes easy swaps for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and even fast –food options. There are also healthy recipes as well as informative nutritional tips to help readers shop, eat and lose fat in the easiest way possible.

Just some of the “Pick It Kick It” examples are as follows: Pickk It: Buckwheat – This satisfying whole grain provides 4 ½ grams of fiber for just 155 calories per cup cooked. Two-thirds of a cup can keep you feel until your next meal.

Kickk It: White rice – Higher in calories than buckwheat (around 200 per cup cooked), white rice “wimps out” in fiber content with about one gram per cup, which can than lead to rapid insulin spikes that bring on cravings and unwanted extra calories.

Pickk It: Edamame – Packed with 9 grams of fiber and 11 grams of protein per half-cup serving, the protein and fiber in edamame are satiety-boosting nutrients that contribute to long term weight loss.

Kickk It: Dried fruit – This snack may be convenient, but it lacks protein and falls short on fiber, both of which are key to feeling full for long stretches of time.

BY DAVID GEDANSKY If you enjoy watching the powerful, graceful moves of big game in the confines of your local zoo, imagine how thrilling it is to see them in the wild, following their instincts and interacting with other animals in their native habitats.

To view a pride of lions, a herd of elephants or a crash of rhinoceros, vacationers from all over the world visit the national parks of Africa. You can also see cheetahs, hippos, elands, giraffes, hyenas, zebras, antelopes and gazelles – to name a few – plus, a seemingly endless variety of exotic birds.

Kruger National Park in South Africa is home to the greatest number of mammal species of any park in Africa. It’s also one of continent’s largest game parks, with a varied landscape that includes savannahs, forests, rivers and mountains. Kruger has all of the “Big Five,” so named because they are the five most difficult animals to hunt – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and cape buffalo. With a bit of luck, you could see all five in a single day.

In Swaziland, Mkhaya Game Reserve

is a refuge for endangered species. With the exception of lions, the rest of the Big Five are residents here, too, but it is a particularly good place to view the elusive rhinos. First established to save Nguni cattle, the reserve is now known for its white rhinos and very rare black rhinos.

Through one of the reserve’s walking safaris, it is even possible to come within a very short distance of many of its animals while on foot.

Chobe National Park in Botswana has an amazing population of elephants – approximately 50,000 Kalahari elephants live there and are often seen in their favored drinking spot: on the banks of the Chobe River, which separates Botswana and Namibia. By taking a boat ride along this river, you may also get up close to view hippos and crocodiles. Chobe is also home to cape buffalo, warthogs, kudus, impalas, wildebeests and unusual birds like the colorful bee-eater. The park is also just over an hour away by car from one of the natural wonders of the world: the spectacular Victoria Falls that straddles the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Have you prepared a business I.T. disaster recovery plan addendum?

With hurricane season just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about a disaster recovery plan. There are many credible, free resources available on the Internet to help you get started, including the Florida Division of Emergency Management, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA (more about these later).

As a business owner or manager, you should consider developing a detailed I.T. addendum to your overall disaster recovery plan. The addendum would include a complete hardware, software and password inventory. An experienced I.T. company can run a software agent on your network that will automatically collect all of the relevant information in a matter of minutes, as opposed to having one of your staff spend hours going from computer to computer.

Your I.T. addendum should also include a plan for getting your staff functioning as quickly as possible after a disaster. You might consider moving your company to a

“cloud” or “hosted” infrastructure as your primary I.T. business model, or at the very least have a “cloud” backup plan. This is especially apropos for those businesses that have customers located outside their immediate geographical area.

Business continuity depends on your ability to provide products and services to your customers after a natural disaster. At the very least, purchase business continuity insurance in case it takes you a while to get the company back on its feet.

Like so many others, Hurricane Andrew destroyed our offices forcing us to work in temporary quarters for months.

Subsequent hurricanes have shut down both electrical power and telephone communications for days at a time. We finally decided to move our primary I.T. infrastructure to completely hosted solutions.

For example, the software we use to manage our company is hosted in New York, our phone system in Massachusetts, our Website hosting services in Arizona, our Microsoft Exchange email in Colorado, our offsite backup systems in Atlanta, and our accounting system in yet another location.

Although our local offices are currently located in the Palmetto Bay Business

COMPUTERS Center (the old Burger King Headquarters), our staff accesses all the resources they need remotely via PCs and thin-client workstations. We have reliable and redundant internet access that is incredibly fast, allowing us to work from anywhere in the world.

If one system goes down because of a disaster, there are various others to facilitate our business continuity. Even smart-phones play a part in our I.T. infrastructure.

A pure hosted solution may not work for every business, but a hybrid is definitely worth consideration. In fact, we own halfa-dozen Miami based servers in addition to a hosted infrastructure; that’s primarily because we are an I.T. company that tests new software releases for both our own use and our customers, with an aim to better support them.

Breast cancer groups to benefit from almost $1 million in grants

Susan G. Komen For the Cure Miami/Fort Lauderdale Affiliate has announced that it raised more than $2 million to support the fight against breast cancer during the fiscal year ending in March.

The Miami/Fort Lauderdale affiliate had such a successful year that it added eight new organizations, including Monroe County’s WomanKind Inc., to its list of grantees. The moneys raised will fund 29 grants to a diverse group of non-profit healthcare organizations, public health agencies and community groups in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties that will further the Komen mission of eradicating breast cancer.

Numerous medically underserved individuals will be impacted by the grant dollars that will provide for mammograms and thousands more will be impacted by education and awareness programs.

In accordance with Komen’s guidelines, 75 percent of the net dollars raised through local events, including the annual Race for the Cure, will stay in the local community to fund breast cancer screenings, education and treatment initiatives. The remaining 25 percent will be pooled with Komen’s

national efforts to fund research programs.

This year close to a million dollars will stay in the local community.

“There are many organizations in our

local community that focus on breast health by educating the public, increasing access to services and spreading awareness of early detection,” said Bobbi Meyers,

executive director of the foundation’s Miami/Fort Lauderdale Affiliate.

“Each year our goal is to provide these organizations with the funding they need to meet their goals and contribute to our overall vision: a world without breast cancer.”

The 2010 grant recipients are: WomanKind Inc., $25,000; Gilda’s Club of South Florida, $25,000; The Memorial Foundation, $150,000; Open Door Health Center Inc., $40,000; Public Health Trust of Miami-Dade County Jackson Health System at Jackson South, $35,125, and the Taylor Breast Health Center, $35,125; Save Our Sisters DBT Inc. Dragon Boat Team, $4,155, and Saint John Bosco Clinic, $30,000.

The Miami/Fort Lauderdale Affiliate is dedicated to eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. Since its inception in 1996, the Miami/Fort Lauderdale Race For the Cure and the Affiliate have raised more than $6 million and reached hundreds of thousands of women and men in educational outreach through grassroots efforts.

School teaches you how to make money as deejay

Since 2000, Corey Feldman and Felix Sama of the Rhythm City DJ Skool have been helping South Floridians learn how to become deejays.

“We do individualized lessons and group lessons,” Sama said. “We do groups with non-profits such as the Here’s Help Foundation and we have classes and work with different schools.”

Feldman said they also work with the Honey Shines Foundation, YMCA of Broward and the Connecticut School of Broadcasting.

“What we have done with the YMCA is a quick, two-week program,” Feldman said. “We give them the concepts of the deejay system. We teach them deejaying at parties and clubs.”

Sama said becoming a deejay is a good way to earn extra money.

“This is a perfect way for not only a kid but for an adult to be a deejay,” Sama said.

“You can make $400 a pop on a weekend.

What the course is going to cost you is worth it.”

When a prospective client inquires about the course, they are given an orientation.

“We let them see the curriculum we have and we break down the course from week to week,” Sama said. “We ask them if they have equipment. If they don’t, we recommend what equipment they can get from us.”

During the course, the attendees learn the history of deejaying, how it evolved, and the equipment from the CDs to turntables. They also learn about famous deejays and how they became so well known.

“It’s a lot of hands-on experience,” he said.

It has to be, Feldman said.

“Deejay equipment is like an instrument, you have to play with the equipment to learn the deejaying itself,” Feldman said.

Sama said that one of the main things they teach is confidence.

“Having confidence you can control the room,” Sama added. “If you have confidence and you get up there in front of the crowd, that is most of the battle.”

The Rhythm City DJ Skool also has a home lesson option.

“We also teach them vocal skills as well,” Sama said. “That can help you in a career in radio.”

That’s where Sama makes much of his living, working for Clear Channel Communications.

“I’ve been in radio for 28 years now. I started at Hot 105 in the ’80s, when it was

a dance station,” he said. “Then I went to Power 96.”

He also has had stints in Spanish radio at Salsa 98.3, then Mega 94.9.

Feldman began in the mobile deejay industry in 1982 and has been working as a deejay ever since.

“I own a production company sending out deejays and dancers,” he said.

He also has worked many big celebrity studded events, including those for Oprah Winfrey, Chuck Norris, Eric Roberts, Don Johnson and the Alonzo Mourning Charities, as well as the American Cancer Society.

Even with the economic slowdown,

Feldman’s production company continues to work, doing many events, including ones at car dealerships.

“We’re doing all their launches and doing all their production work when they are introducing a new vehicle,” Feldman said.

Successful students can then participate in the internship program, which allows them to go on site with the production company. If the intern shows strong skills, after a while they are able to go on their own to do event, starting with children’s parties.
