Well child check-ups (also called physicals or check-ups) are important, even when children are healthy. Your child's PCP will review your child’s family history, give you helpful information, and give your child needed medical services, such as:
• Health exams
• Tests, such as vision, hearing, and lab services
• Shots (vaccinations)
• Lead screening (children under 3 years or as needed for older children)
• Tracking growth and development
• Medical referrals to specialists, if needed
Benefits of a Well Child Checkup
• They can help prevent or catch problems early, when problems may be easier to treat.
• They can help your child stay up-to-date with vaccines.
• You’ll have a chance to ask questions about your child’s health (behavior, sleeping habits, etc.)
• It’s an opportunity for your PCP to provide you with important information (nutrition, fitness, etc.)
A Well Child Checkup takes the entire visit. A medical concern (ex. cough) deserves its own separate visit to do go a good job. If your child has ongoing medical issues like asthma, they are ideally addressed at a separate visit.
