ENGAGEMENT

Rocks!

BY ERIN BITZAN, DJ BITZAN JEWELERS If the sea of sparkle on your screen is overwhelming, take a deep breath and step away from the Google search. Chances are if you searched “engagement rings,” the influx of jewelry websites, ring styles, and advice is enough to make your head spin. And, if you’re in the market for a sparkler for that finger, your heart is already racing. Or your heart could be beating hard because you’re trying not to get caught browsing rings at work...either way, you’re embarking on a thrilling journey to find the perfect engagement ring. Now more than ever, couples are seeking rings that are truly a unique expression of their love. From timeless solitaires to fashionforward designs, engagement rings are as extraordinary as the brides that wear them. With the ever-evolving array of innovative designs, bridal jewelry now has something for everyone.

“Ask your jeweler for other options, including the opportunity to create a custom design.” Even though finding the right engagement ring may not be as easy as falling in love, it doesn’t have to be difficult. Most modern couples engage in the process together, shopping around for a jeweler that offers unique styles, incredible service, and value. Look for a jeweler with a sparkling reputation, whose commitment to you is their first priority. A jeweler that’s committed to you will stand behind the quality of their product. Keep in mind, however, that your jewelry will need to be maintained over time. Things like complimentary cleaning and checking, tightening stones, polishing, restoring the rhodium plating on white gold jewelry, sizing, and other routine repairs are important considerations when choosing a jeweler. Make sure to inquire about your jeweler’s warranty plan and what it covers.

10

www.IdoIdo.org 11

If he already put a ring on it, you might be anxious to find the complementary wedding ring to complete your set. Wedding band choices are nearly endless: from a simple shadow band that follows the curve of your engagement ring, to intricately carved and diamond encrusted. While many engagement rings are presented with a matching wedding band, you might not like the suggested style. Ask your jeweler for other options, including the opportunity to create a custom design. Creating a one-of-a-kind piece is an exciting process and it doesn’t necessarily cost more. Allow enough time to fully immerse in the process, refine your ideas, and let the designer carefully create your exclusive design. From beginning to end, creating a one-of-kind piece of jewelry that represents your relationship is truly a memorable process. Although style is important, form and function are necessary considerations when choosing a man’s wedding band. For example, comfort fit bands feature rounded edges which most men prefer for a better fit. Consider lifestyle when picking the style, width, and metal of his wedding band. Will he wear it to work, will it impede his golf swing, is it comfortable? While the popularity of alternative metals for wedding bands like tungsten, titanium, and cobalt has increased, they aren’t always the best choice for everyone. Even though they are durable, most aren’t resizable and can be difficult to remove in the case of an emergency. According to theKnot.com, the majority of men still choose wedding bands fashioned in white gold and platinum. Give yourself enough time to browse, research, and revisit rings. Start looking as early as you’re comfortable. Most jewelers recommend purchasing at least 4-6 months prior to your date. Wedding expenses seem to accumulate quickly, but keep in mind that your rings remain as a lasting reminder of your commitment long after your walk down the aisle.

Dress It

BY BRENDA LUNDORFF, THE BRIDAL BOUTIQUE & OUTLET Now that he has proposed, the next step is to find you that perfect wedding dress. Before you start shopping, it is a good idea to look in bridal magazines and on bridal web sites to get an idea of what styles you like. Remember that dresses look different on your body than in the pictures, so keep an open mind. Feel free to bring in pictures to bridal shops so they can help you get started. Call the bridal stores that you plan to visit ahead of time to make an appointment. (Not all bridal stores require appointments but most do – especially on Saturdays.) Choose two or three members of your family or your friends to help you shop; their input will give you guidance on your special day. Use the first shopping trip to pick out your wedding gown, and make a second appointment for your bridesmaids to pick out their dresses. When you do find your perfect gown, order it right away. Many brides shop around for months, comparing each to the special one they’ve already found, so when you know you’ve found the right one, just go for it. Bridals stores never know if a dress is going to be discontinued, so purchasing early is a good idea, and a bridal gown usually takes six to nine months to arrive at the store (if it doesn’t get delayed in shipping for weeks!). Ordering your dress a full year ahead of time will give you time to find and order your accessories, and allows time for alterations. Bridal shoes, jewelry, veils and tiaras usually take six to eight weeks to arrive and you need those before you start your alterations. Plan to start your bridal alterations three months prior to your wedding. Also, bring your personal attendant with to all of your bridal gown fittings.

Getting the Guys in Tuxedos Trying to get the men in your wedding party to get their tuxedos or suits is like pulling teeth. Often, groomsmen would prefer to wait until the last minute to get fitted, so it’s best to take a few steps so the process runs smoothly. The bride and groom should go to the tuxedo shop three to four months prior to their wedding date to pick out their preferred tuxedo style. The prices of tuxedos depend on the style and color, which are usually black, brown, ivory, tan, latte or gray. Many tuxedo shops provide a complimentary groom’s tuxedo with six or more tuxedo rentals. When picking out your tuxedo, you also need to decide what color shirt you would like, along with a vest and tie, so bring a color swatch of your bridesmaids’ dresses. All tuxedo shops need the groomsmen’s and ushers’ measurements six to eight weeks prior to your wedding. The tuxedos do not arrive until that week of your wedding, usually on the Thursday before. Make sure all of your guys try on their tuxedos before the day of your wedding to make sure they fit properly. As long as everyone was measured professionally at a tuxedo or bridal store you should have a great fit!

From the first IMPRESSION

to I do

BY LERAE RENGEL, RENGEL PRINTING When does the first impression of your wedding happen? At the church? At the reception? Actually, the true first impression happens when you formally ask your family and friends to join you on your special day – with your wedding invitations. You can create invitations that are uniquely yours. The wedding invitations are your guest’s first glimpse of your wedding. They set the tone through design and specific color combinations, and suggest the event’s overall level of formality. The first steps are to decide on the vision, the colors that you want integrated into the invite and the quantities needed. You may choose to create a traditional, formal wedding invite or a modern invite based on the wedding motif that you envision.

“The wedding invitations are your guest’s first glimpse of your wedding.” An invitation can consist of several customary elements: an outer envelope; the invitation; a reception card; a response card that is self-addressed or includes a self-address, unsealed envelope; an accommodations card; thank-you cards; and, in some cases if time allows, a save-the-date card or magnet. In designing a custom wedding invite, you will want to apply style and uniqueness to each piece, keeping them all socially correct and applying wedding invite etiquette as well. They can be worded and arranged in countless ways to reflect the style of the occasion. You should integrate your wedding colors into your invitations to tie your theme together.

22

23

There are a large variety of ink colors, type styles and papers to choose from to create a unique wedding ensemble. In designing a custom invitation, please allow enough time for the actual design, proofing, printing, assembling, addressing and mailing. Invitations should be mailed out six to eight weeks prior to your big day. Request RSVPs with the response card two to three weeks prior to the event. Remember to order at least 25 extra for last minute guest additions, mistakes and to have a couple for keepsakes. Creating a custom wedding collection will truly be a personal reflection of your special day! They will create your love story from the first impression to “I Do.

When considering a baker... How does the baker establish pricing? By the slice? Flavors and/or fillings? Decoration? Does the baker provide a cake knife and server? Is there a separate fee for that? Will the baker deliver and set up the cake or will someone else need to pick it up? Is there an additional delivery fee? Are the cakes and desserts prepared fresh? How soon before the wedding are they baked?

Capturing YOUR

Day

BY DENNIS ZERWAS, JR., DZ PHOTOGRAPHY Imagine this scenario: It is two weeks after your beautiful and momentous wedding day. The delicious food and drink has been consumed, the dances have all ended, and the gifts are slowly getting put away. So much planning went into that one special day to last you a lifetime of memories. You call your photographer (a friend of a friend who owned a “nice camera” who was willing to do it on the cheap) to see when the photos will be ready. The photographer tells you there is a problem. He explains that all of the hundreds of images that were taken throughout the day were all shot at the lowest-quality setting. What does this mean? Essentially, you are limited to forever viewing tiny thumbnail previews on a computer monitor. You’ll never get to hold a gorgeous print in your hand, hang a jaw-dropping wall portrait in your home, or flip through the pages of a wedding scrapbook filled with photos as your grandchildren sit on your lap. Sadly, this situation is becoming more common as couples make the mistake of cutting corners when it comes to choosing a photographer for their wedding. In the past five years or so, the falling prices of consumer digital cameras have made “professional-looking” cameras more accessible to the weekend hobbyist. This is a very dangerous thing. For example, you could hand me a Louis and Clark carbon-fiber cello, the exact same cello that virtuoso cellist Yo-Yo Ma uses. I would look quite professional sitting there holding that $7,000 instrument. What’s the difference between Yo-Yo Ma and myself? I should sound just as good as him since we both have the same instrument, right? Wrong – very wrong. It would be evident in the first stroke of the bow against the strings that, while I am indeed making noise, it is nothing compared to the beautiful sounds that would come from

30

www.IdoIdo.org

31

Yo-Yo Ma’s cello. What does this mean to you? Be aware of which photographers are simply making noise and which ones are using their years of experience and artistic and technical talents to create timeless images. It may seem convenient to hire your uncle who owns “the good camera” or the friend who has taken a photography class. Photographing a wedding is not like taking pictures of a bowl of fruit in a classroom. There is only one chance to get it right. Capturing a wedding day, keeping up with its flow and understanding the atmosphere – that just can’t be taught in a classroom or learned in a fancy camera manual. It’s something that comes with years of experience. Your wedding day is far too important to leave in the hands of an amateur photographer. You may be thinking, “Of course you’re going to say that. You make your living photographing weddings.” While this is true, I am also a husband of 10 years who absolutely cherishes my wedding photos. The priceless images were created by – you guessed it – a professional wedding photographer! Every time I open my wedding album, I am immediately taken back to that day. I can’t imagine not having those photos. Now, imagine this scenario: It’s two weeks after the wedding. You contact your professional photographer and they tell you that everything looks gorgeous! They have gone above and beyond your expectations. Your wedding images are the envy of all your friends, family and coworkers. You love showing them off. This is the way wedding photography was meant to be. It may sound cliché but after all is said and done, the photographs and videos of your wedding are the closest things to actually going back in time to relive that special, oncein-a-lifetime moment. What is that worth to you?

How to PLAN your

WeddingMusic BY SHARON PLANER, PIANIST FOR PARTIES Congratulations on your engagement! Now it’s time to make your wedding plans. Remember, this is your special day... your musician should be willing to take the time to hear your ideas and give you suggestions to help make your ceremony the unique and wonderful event you want it to be. If planning the music for your wedding seems overwhelming, a professional musician will be able to guide you through the process and take care of all the details for you. Whether you have a traditional or non-traditional ceremony, you will want the music to reflect your style. Here are some suggestions to help you find your musician and music. Finding the Right Musician(s) for Your Wedding Research by asking friends, your other wedding vendors, getting recommendations from local music stores, and doing an Internet search for the type of musician you are looking for. The place you are having your ceremony or reception may provide suggestions, too. Select a number of musician(s) to contact. If you can, go hear them perform live. If not, ask to hear some sample recordings. Some things you should make sure to ask when meeting with your musician(s): • Ask for references. Talk to references who can vouch that the musician(s) did a great job while being prompt and responsible. • Do they provide a free consultation to help you plan your music? • Do they have a set repertoire or are they willing to learn other songs? • Do they play the style of music you are looking for? • Are they willing to accompany vocalists or other instrumentalists if necessary?

38

www.IdoIdo.org

39

• Will they attend your wedding rehearsal? • What backup plans can they offer if they are not able to perform for your ceremony? • Ask for a sample contract. • Compare prices. Do they charge by the hour, by the job? Find out the total cost to you including mileage, set-up fees, rehearsal, practicing with other musicians, learning new music, etc. • Once you find the musician(s) who best represents your wishes, be prepared to provide a deposit inorder to secure the date for your wedding. Finding Music for Your Ceremony Once you have selected your musician(s), you will want to meet to plan your ceremony music. Your musician(s) should be able to offer advice and provide you with a variety of music to choose from. Be sure to tell your musician(s) any special song requests. There are some free resources for finding music. Your area library likely has wedding sheet music and sound recordings. Many wedding websites have lists of ceremony and reception music, and some allow you to listen to samples. It can sometimes take 4 to 8 weeks to special order music, so it’s important to do this well in advance of your wedding. The musician(s) will appreciate some time to learn the music as well. Most ceremonies include songs for these moments during the ceremony: Prelude Music Your musician provides music to set the mood while the guests are being seated and waiting for the ceremony to begin. Parents and Grandparents Song: Sometimes bridal couples want a special song played when the parents and grandparents are seated. Bridal Party Processional This song is played when the bridal party walks in. Bridal Processional This song is played as the bride walks down the aisle. It can be a continuation of the bridal party processional or a totally different piece of music. This music is usually grand and festive. Unity Candle, Rose Presentation, signing of the wedding license, or communion: Music is often performed or sung at these times. Recessional: This music is played at the conclusion of the ceremony when the bride and groom make their exit and is usually bright and lively. Postlude Music Your musician provides music for your guests to enjoy while the guests are being ushered out. You’re almost done! There are just a few more details to cover. 1. Does your musician need to provide his/her own instrument or is the instrument available at the ceremony location? What is the sound quality of the instrument? How often is it tuned? Your musician should be taking care of all these details, but you’ll want to make sure. 2. Do you have vocalists that will need accompaniment? Let your ceremony musician know. 3. Some clergy and churches are selective as to the type of music they allow. Be sure to have this approved by your officiant. 4. Some facilities and churches have sound technicians, and some even require that you hire one for your event. You’ll want to hire a sound technician as soon as possible to insure his/her availability for your event. Congratulations! You have chosen your musician(s), picked your music and covered the details. You can relax knowing that your musician(s) will create the perfect setting for your wedding ceremony.

Top FIVE Tips for

PICKING PERFECT

WeddingFlowers BY JOHN MALIKOWSKI, BLOOMING CREATIONS FLORAL & GIFTS Selecting flowers is one of the most essential steps in the wedding planning process. Next to the bride, the wedding flowers are one of the most photographed details of your wedding day. It is crucial to have wedding bouquets and centerpieces that fit both the style and theme of your perfect wedding day. Finding the right florist to design and create your dream bouquets and floral decorations is easy if you follow these five tips: • Ask for referrals. When a florist is highly recommended by another bride or photographer, you know they will do great work on your wedding. Ask to see their photos. • Attend bridal expos. You can experience fresh, real-life creations as well as examine the quality of the florist’s design work. This will also allow you to form an impression about a florist regarding how they make you feel when you meet them in a room full of other brides.

“Next to the bride, the wedding flowers are one of the most photographed details of your wedding day”. • Make an appointment. Book a time to sit with a florist and look at photos of their past creations, which will allow you to see their designs in close detail. Are the arrangements unique and creative? This is also a great time to determine their knowledge of flowers and assess their wedding floral experience level. • Plan, plan, plan. Have some floral ideas in mind when you meet with your florist. Bring pictures from magazines or the Internet

44

www.IdoIdo.org 45

that reflect your vision. Have some colors and flower choices in mind. If you’re unsure of what you want, an outstanding florist should be able to help you create that perfect combination of colors and flowers to make your wedding flowers a dream come true. • Choose your florist. Find one who listens to your ideas, but has ideas and suggestions for you, as well. Select someone you really want to work with, not just someone who is available on your wedding day. Find a florist who is just as excited about your flowers and wedding day as you are! Book a florist (by securing them with a deposit) that makes you feel at ease and comfortable. One last hint: Pick your bridal bouquet first. Once the bride’s bouquet flowers are chosen – the rest of the wedding flowers, from the bridal-party flowers to the corsages and boutonnieres – will fall into place by incorporating the bouquet flowers throughout the others. Once you’ve chosen your flowers, you’ll need to create the perfect ceremony site design plan. If you are having a traditional wedding, the aisle you walk down should represent elegance truly worthy of you as a bride. You need everything from gorgeous pew decorations to amazing alter pieces to make this a stunning vision. Finally, it’s time to design the reception site: this is your “Wow Factor.” You can make an impressive and beautifully elegant statement by having large floral centerpieces with multiple designs throughout the hall or ballroom. These designs should utilize different sizes to break up the room’s space, ultimately giving the reception site the true beauty that every bride deserves at her wedding reception. Follow this advice, and your wedding will blossom with color, scent and beauty!

BY PAULA PAULSON, WE’VE GOT IT COVERED Wedding decorations are important because they set the atmosphere of the party. They accent the reception venue and the ceremony, making each fit for the occasion. Since decorations are a matter of personal taste, the options are limitless and quality can vary. The wedding decorations are going to be what sets the entire feel of this day, so be sure to love the decorations at both the ceremony and the reception. The decorations can cover everything – from the tables to the lighting – but also the invitations sent out to guests. An eye for detail, lots of planning and help from expert vendors can bring it all together for your special day. Your photographs will capture not only you and all your wedding guests, but also all of the wedding décor in all of its glory. When you choose your designs, think of that wedding album and the décor that will be filling up many of the shots.

“ The wedding decorations are going to be what sets the entire feel of this day, so be sure to love the decorations at both the ceremony and the reception.” Some couples prefer a traditional wedding. In that case, it is especially important for the bride and groom to choose wedding décor that will represent their heritage – perhaps even make the guests think they have been swept away to another country. Even if the wedding is more casual, the flair for the event should still be obvious as people walk into the wedding reception.

Wedding décor covers so many different aspects of your event, so hiring reputable vendors is a must (for the perfect design and for your sanity!). Of course, make your desires and expectations clear, but spending that extra bit of money on a great vendor will be money well spent. Start planning the wedding décor months or even a year in advance, chipping away at the details little by little. Weddings are always a nerveriddled event, but if you have at least the wedding décor planned to some extent before the big day, then you can focus more on your dress, hair and makeup. The less you have to worry about the better. With the right help and planning, your wedding décor will have your guests in awe and remembering your wedding in an even more special light.

your Reception Personal

TOUCHES for

BY MEGAN CZYCALLA, REICHEL’S CATERING & EVENT CENTER Your wedding day is the day that two individuals become one. Endless hours of thinking, discussing, sometimes arguing and planning go into this special day. The end result should be a reflection of your individual personalities, family dynamics and a portrait of this new couple, being joined in marriage. Since the reception expenses tend to encompass the largest portion of your overall budget, the reception should be the ultimate reflection of who you are as a couple. There are many factors to consider for adding your personal touch. What do you envision when you imagine your reception? Are you looking for a place with natural lighting, outdoor space, historical architecture or a strong theme? These concepts form the foundation of a facility, and it is unlikely that they can be altered. However, there are many other items you can adjust to fit your personality, theme and colors. Color, in particular, can speak volumes about your personality. Couples with bold personalities may choose to work with equally bold colors like fuchsia; those looking for something timeless may choose a black-and-white theme; and couples looking for elegance may choose rich jewel tones. Colors can also be molded to themes surrounding the seasons. Whatever your color choice or theme, be sure to incorporate it in to your reception plans. Ask the facility what color options you have for table linens and linen napkins. This could be a great way to pull in color or accent it. Dinner and beverage selections are another great way to highlight your uniqueness as a couple. When planning your menu selection,

52

www.IdoIdo.org

53

think about who you are and your history as a couple. Do you share a favorite food or a favorite memory revolving around food? Perhaps there is a way to integrate the dinner you had on your first date. A shared favorite food or family recipe is another option. If you don’t want to make a bold jump from the traditional wedding dinner, there are other ways to incorporate a special dish into your reception. Party favors, appetizers or a late night snack provide opportunities for this: For example, chips and salsa as a late-night snack allows you to incorporate your love of Mexican cuisine without making a large leap like having a taco bar for dinner. Keep the same concept in mind for beverages. If you share a love of wine, perhaps a wine bar would be a nice addition to cocktail hour. For coffee lovers, a coffee bar is a nice afterdinner option. Is there a specific drink that would highlight your personality, history as a couple, theme or colors? If so, ask if it could be displayed as a “drink of the night.” Throughout the planning process, keep these concepts in mind. It is not necessary to add personality to every small detail, but by adding just the right amount here and there, your special day is sure to be the perfect reflection of the future Mr. and Mrs.

HONEYMOON

travel tips

BY NICOLE WINTER, DESTINATION VACATION Your honeymoon is a much-needed vacation together after all your pre – wedding stress. It’s a time when you two can enjoy each other, relax, or maybe try a new adventure. Wherever you may want to go – whether it’s skiing in the mountains, cruising through the inside passage of Alaska, or relaxing on a beach – here are five simple but important tips to follow. 1. Decide where to go. Start by visualizing yourself enjoying your honeymoon, and be able to describe it in three words, such as warm, sunny beach; crisp, mountain air; or wine tasting and vineyard tour. Your words can help narrow down your desired destination options. With each of you coming up with three words, this will tell you if you have the same style of honeymoon in mind or if you’ll have to blend your ideas together. 2. Discuss a budget. This is sometimes hard to decide if you have not traveled much, so don’t be afraid to ask your travel agent what is a typical budget for the type of honeymoon you want. From there you can discuss together what budget you are comfortable with spending. 3. Use a travel agent. They are experts who know the destinations and resorts. Travel agents are there to help you, so ask questions. With their knowledge, they will help you plan your vacation of a lifetime by finding the right lifetime by finding the right destination, advising just the perfect resort, or planning that amazing excursion the two of you have always wanted to experience. 4. Allow enough time to plan. This can be very important because you may need time to arrange for passports or visa’s and to make sure your license is up-to-date. You may even have to discuss how

60

www.IdoIdo.org 61

long you want to be gone and plan for your work vacation time. But planning early will help prevent pre – wedding stress-there are already many other items on you wedding todo list. 5. Have Fun. Do not forget that this is an exciting time of your life, so have fun planning. This will be one of the most important vacations the two of you will ever take as a married couple, so make it memorable.

On Time

As I Like It

BY TAMI SPANIER, PEARL LIMOUSINE As you plan your perfect day one of your thoughts should be “how are we going to ride.” If you have planned your beautifully elegant day with several attendants your thoughts will probably arrive at “we need a limousine.” Whether your wedding party is large or small a limousine is a great option. Extravagant or economical, there is a package, size, color for every want or need. Other transportation choices may be a horse drawn carriage, a vintage car, a party bus, or your Uncle Louie’s tractor and wagon. Whatever your choice, make it special and memorable for the most anticipated day of your life.

“Limousines have become the most popular type of wedding transportation over the past decade.” As with any choice there are concerns. Obviously the weather may be an issue if your choice of transportation is open air. Have a back up plan if you have chosen any of these types of ride. Also, make sure that you choose a “reputable” company to provide your transportation. The next door neighbor or a friend of a friend may have a limousine or vintage car and they may rent it to you inexpensively, however, if they don’t show up, don’t have the proper licensing, and insurance, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment and frustration. Before booking your ride, do a little homework. Talk with friends and family as to what they have seen, heard, or used. Many companies are rated with the Better Business Bureau. Go online or call them. Ask to see the limousine, car, or buggy. Most owners/companies are very willing to show off their beautiful rides.

64

www.IdoIdo.org 65

Limousines have become the most popular type of wedding transportation over the past decade. They are usually beautiful and you do not need to concern yourself with driving, especially if you have chosen to have any type of alcoholic beverage before or after your ceremony. But have you thought about your wedding guests? Wedding guest transportation has become more and more popular. The thought behind this new wave is making it easier for your out-of-town guests to get to and from your church and/ or reception. There have been many stories of out-of-town guests not ever finding the reception hall. Also, if you are serving alcoholic beverages to your guests, making sure they get back to the hotel/motel safely is a wonderful idea and will give you and your parents, peace of mind. Several “local” bus or tour companies can provide you with this type of transportation economically. Whether you have chosen a limousine, car, buggy, or tractor and wagon, a full-day package or just a ride from the church to the reception, this is one of the items that can be arranged far in advance or as a last minute detail. Whichever you choose on your special day, remember to “sit back and enjoy the ride”.

Trends

2013–2014

BY GINA ARTISENSI-SKIME & STEPHANIE LUEBKE THE CROWN ROOM BANQUET CENTER The Friday Evening Affair: It is becoming more and more popular to hold your wedding reception on a Friday evening. Imagine sleeping in on your wedding day! No more 6:00 am hair appointments. With a Friday evening wedding your time line will generally run later which allows more time to enjoy your day. You can start the day with a brunch with your bridesmaids and groomsmen, a round of golf, or a day at the spa. This also gives you the option to plan a Saturday BBQ or gift opening, and leaves your guests an extra day to travel. Venues also typically offer a reduced food and beverage minimum and room rental fees for your Friday evening celebration. Color, Color and MORE Color: Instead of sticking to just one or two accent colors for your wedding day brides will accent with multiple splashes of color. We are seeing bright and vibrant color trends across the boaRoad This is also becoming a trend in actual wedding day apparel. Bridesmaids and groomsmen are wearing one solid color and are given an accent color. They are tying these colors in with their shoes and accessories. These accent colors can be the same, or one color per bridesmaid/groomsmen. Goodbye all white wedding cake! We are also seeing multi-colored cakes and cupcakes as well.

“Instead of sticking to just one or two accent colors for your wedding day brides will accent with multiple splashes of color.” Décor Galore: Brides are using décor to create a “WOW” factor for their guests. We are seeing a lot of specialty linens, chair covers and colored sashes as well as ceiling draping. Paper lanterns are also another popular décor item surfacing in 2013-2014.

68

www.IdoIdo.org

69

We are finding that our couples are picking a color, monogram, or theme, and carrying it all the way through from their Save-the-Dates, to their invitations and day of décor. Another “WOW” factor that couples are loving is uplighting. Uplighting can be programmed into your wedding day color. Uplighting is a step-up for any location and transforms your ceremony and reception space into your own personalized and customized venue. The Not-So-Boring Wedding Dessert: Couples are steering away from your typical “Minnesota Marble Cake with Butter Cream Filling & Frosting” for their wedding dessert. We are seeing requests for unique flavors and fillings. Depending on your venue you may also not be limited to one cake filling and flavor. Some venues offer a variety of fillings and flavors. This can be a great conversation starter for your guests as well as they are exploring the different flavors. Cupcakes are still a popular dessert choice as well. Late Night Snacks: Most couples put an emphasis on their social-hour appetizers and beverage selections and are now providing a separate late-night treat for their guests to enjoy. You can usually plan on less than half of your guest count – or less, depending on your guest list being in attendance for “phase II” of your evening. You will want to provide a fun and casual bite for your guests to indulge in such as pizzas, build-your-own nachos, sliders, popcorn, or a sweet-and-salty combination. You will want to keep your late-night snacks light and easy.

Does the officiant or church have any special rules or restrictions?

Does the officiant require premarital counseling, either from the officiant or elsewhere?

Does the officiant charge a ceremony fee? How much?

When will the rehearsal be?

If you are planning the ceremony at the church of a pastor, find out what the church provides and what you need to provide.

Who will oversee the event the day of your wedding?

Will the caterer attractively present the food on the plate or in the buffet tray? Can you see examples of past work?
