Residence Hall hacks to help make you feel at home By Miranda Castillo

Living in one of Central Michigan University’s residence halls will be one of the most transformative, memorable experiences of your collegiate career. You will make friends that you will be in contact with for the rest of your life. You will take part in fun activities that you will find only while living with hundreds of other students. Once you’ve had a chance to unpack, it’s time to start making the most of your experience.

Leave your door open in your residence hall when you’re home. That is a great way to meet new people.

Don’t be afraid to stop by and meet others on your floor.

Join your Hall Council. You will have a voice in all the important decisions being made about your hall.

Here are a few pieces of advice to consider after you have moved in.

Understand that the biggest cause of roommate conflict is a failure to communicate. Honesty with your roommates is always best. Talk it out!

Go to your first official floor meeting

Make sure you eat well, sleep enough and manage your time properly.

Get to know your Resident Assistant (RA), Multi-cultural Adviser (MA) and Residence Hall Director (RHD). They’re there to help with your success and happiness.

The front desk offers more resources than you would expect – check it out. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. That is why they are there!

Attend the opening weekend events in your hall and on campus.

Visit the Success Center in your area and find out about the staff available to assist you.

FIVE RESIDENCE HALL

Room Essentials By Anastasha Franco

With all of the exciting things going on before your first semester at college, packing might be the hardest thing you do. How can you decide what should come with you and what should stay at your parents’ house? Sometimes you think you packed everything you need until you’re all moved in and realized you forgot toiletries. It happens. Here is a list of things you don’t think are important, but are essential to your freshman year.

Clothes hangers: Don’t ever underestimate the number of hangers you will need. With limited drawer space it’s important to hang up as many clothes as you can. You’ll need more hangers than you think. Sleep mask and earplugs: This sounds a little silly, but it’s not. There’s nothing worse than your roommate keeping you up while working on a project until 3 a.m., or noisy floor mates. With these you can drown out the distraction and get the sleep you need. Printer: CMU allows each registered undergraduate students an allocation of 250 pages black-and-white printing or $10.00 each term (fall, spring and summer). However, there will be times when you need something printed ASAP and all of the

computer labs are closed. Save yourself time and an extra trip by bringing your own printer. Power cords, surge protector and extension cords: residence hall rooms are already pretty small and outlets are scarce. Often they are also in all the wrong places. It’s a good idea to bring one (or a few) heavy-duty surge expansion strips with at least five outlets. A three-prong extension cord may also come in handy! Mattress topper or memory foam topper: dorm mattresses are not necessarily the most comfy and it will feel like you’re sleeping on a rock in comparison to your bed at home. So, grab yourself a nice mattress or memory topper to ensure a restful night.

DISPLAYING your

Chippewa Pride

NOT OK

Multiple zig zag stripes

By CM Life Staff Reports

Each year at Central Michigan University football games, a few students wear face painting and eye black that, regardless of their intentions, can be insensitive and demeaning to members of the Anishnaabeg people, known more commonly as the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. The issue can be confusing: how does an institution directly tied to the Tribe honor a proud community with a rich history while reconciling the fact that portrayals of that Tribe come with pain from generationspanning racial abuse? To help solve the issue, CMU and the Tribe have been working together for decades to educate students on what is acceptable and what is not. “The relationship between the tribe and university is as strong as it ever has been,” Frank Cloutier, public relations director of the tribe told Central Michigan Life. In a university press release, CMU President George Ross explained that eye paint is fine, as are faces that are half maroon and half gold. But multiple stripes, either vertically, horizontally or as zig-zag lines, are inappropriate. “Wearing war paint, adorning your person with feathers, or simulating a Tomahawk Chop are not respectful actions nor correct depiction of the Anishnaabeg people,” Ross said. Cloutier added that CMU has done a good job of making teachable moments out of experiences that challenge cultural sensitivity. Cloutier said honoring his people comes from recognizing they are a competitive people. He said students choosing higher education are making positive choices that support their school, which connects to values of the tribe.

“When (students) go to those these events, what is best for the many is best for the few,” Cloutier said. “That’s what being a Chippewa is all about, knowing those traits and being proud of them.” The Anishnaabeg people were historically hunters and gatherers, and warriors. Sherry Knight, vice president of university communications, said Ross will most likely disseminate another letter to students this football season to inform them of the guidelines. Additionally, students can find these rules online at the CMU athletics website and in the student handbook. Freshmen orientation also addresses what constitutes appropriate behavior. Knight said enforcing these rules has not been something the university is concerned with because of the small number of incidents. In August of 2005, the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) put CMU and 18 other schools on a list of institutions that “display hostile or abusive, racial, ethnic, national origin mascots, nicknames or imagery.” The schools would be banned from displaying this imagery during postseason play, and were prohibited from hosting tournaments. The university appealed this decision and was exonerated after proving the strength of the relationship with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe through their written approval. Since the NCAA’s 2005 self-evaluation to examine the use of potentially offensive imagery in schools, all of the colleges using the nickname “Indians” changed them. “If (students) want to show school sprit, look at the protocols the university put in place to show it appropriately and educate what is being a flying C and what a Chippewa native American is,” Cloutier said.

Throughout high school, the only thing I remember hearing is “we’re preparing you for what it’s going to be like in college,” from all my teachers. I stayed up late studying. I pushed myself cramming for AP tests and going the extra mile to try and boost my GPA as much as possible. I had it built up in my head that every college professor was out to get me and that if I came to class so much as one minute late, I was going to fail the course. Fast forward to the last few weeks of school and I’m doing homework outside in a hammock, wondering why I was ever really stressed about college in the first place. Over the course of the past two semesters, I’ve relaxed and realized a few things. Now it is my turn to help freshmen learn to navigate their first year at Central Michigan University. One: University life isn’t like what you see in the movies. You aren’t going to go to crazy parties every night and end up recreating your own mini-version of The Hangover. In fact, the highlight of your week may very well be staying up until 2 a.m. finishing your calc homework for the next few days because you’re finally ahead in that class you’ve been lagging behind in. The professors aren’t out to make your life hell. In fact, most of them are rather laid back and just want to see you succeed. Crazy, right? Two: Don’t be afraid if you don’t make friends at first, because it’s going to happen naturally. Go out and join an RSO. Find something you’re passionate about. We have so many organizations on campus, there’s bound to be one person who thinks like you and is waiting to become a good friend of yours. At the risk of sounding corny, just be yourself. Three: Don’t wait until the last second to do your final project. This is one thing high school was right on. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that Sunday night at 1:30 a.m. is a great time to start your 12 page paper due Monday. It’s not going to work and you’re probably going to cry. It happens. Make going to class a priority. Make new friends. Make this year your own.

• Lots of friendly faces • Plenty of table space for group projects • A comfy couch for a nap • Christian encouragement and support

Get involved right away. Watching movies in your dorm and hanging out with your friends from high school will only be fun for so long. You’ll wish you had more friends to spend time with that aren’t just the people you live with. Getting involved in a Registered Student Organization as a freshman will not only improve your resume, but it will greatly improve your social life at CMU.

Don’t get the unlimited meal plan. Everyone seems to start out with the unlimited meal plan thinking they will eat at the dining hall at least four times a day. I can almost guarantee that you will not! Take the plan that’s one down from the unlimited choice. That option also has more Flex dollars, which are very important.

Flex dollars will become your most prized possession. Between Starbucks, The Market, Subway and more, you will want to have as many Flex dollars as you can get your hands on. Sure it’s technically the same as paper money, but you can save in the end if you buy it in bulk during the beginning of the semester for less when campus dining has their deals. You’ll want that late night snack, the coffee between classes or something other than dining hall food more than you think. Don’t underestimate the power of Flex dollars.

The Freshman 15 (cough, cough, 20) is harder to work off than you think. BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU EAT. I was a freshman that always ate well at home and thought that I could restrain myself at the dining hall from making bad decisions. Warning: this is extremely hard to do. You better have strong willpower. It’s too easy to say, “I’ll have another Big Apple Bagel” or “Let’s see how many no-bake cookies I can eat since I’m technically paying a lot for these meals”. Make smart choices because you will most likely still be trying to work off that weight as an upperclassman.

Study abroad! I studied abroad for a whole semester and it was incredible! I can’t even put the experiences I had into words. It can be scary. You may think you can’t leave your life at CMU for that long or you will get behind in classes, but don’t let any of those fears get in the way of this opportunity. In the end, it wasn’t scary. I barely missed anything and I still graduated in four years. My friends who didn’t study abroad are now telling me that missing out on that experience is their biggest regret since they now have to find jobs and don’t know how they’ll find time to travel. Actually attend sporting events. Fall tailgates before football games were one of my absolute favorite things about CMU. These are nothing short of a blast. But there were way too many times where I found myself not wanting to make the effort to sit through a game after the festivities died down. I do regret this. The school spirit at CMU is such a beautiful and fun thing that you don’t want to miss out on. Soon, I won’t have the ability to constantly yell “Fire up Chips” everywhere I go and that saddens me. I speak for many seniors when I make this point.

I never thought this time in my life would go by as fast as it did or that I’d even have this amazing of a time in just four years. I’d give anything to have just a few more months added onto this experience so that I can have a little bit more time to part with the fact that it’s basically over. Now that my friend group will be spread out throughout the country and I won’t have my RSO’s to attend and spend time with, I’m cherishing every last minute that I have. I found this one out the hard way when I was applying for my dream internship and I learned this lesson one day before the application was due. I needed two letters of recommendation from professors and I needed them on a Friday afternoon. Luckily, I had two professors that I had known for a couple of years who were able to take time out of their Friday to do this. Don’t wait until it’s too late! You may run into a situation like that or you may need help on getting a good grade in the class. CMU is so great because the professors actually do care and want to know your name. Other than just serving as a resource and a mentor, you’ll often find them pretty fun to talk to and they may become a friend.

THE TOP 10, AND BEST, REASONS TO

Go Greek By Rachel Bowen

Starting your college career can be an

You will be given real opportunities to develop your leadership skills.

overwhelming but exciting experience. You are finally on your own and have now acquired this incredible amount of freedom and spare time that you don’t know what to do with. Here’s a little insight on how beneficial going Greek can

Every Greek organization has countless leadership positions that you can jump right into. This will set you apart from many people down the road and will give you the opportunity to reinforce skills you are interested in. You will also find that in leadership programs around campus, such as Leadership Safari, Greeks tend to be the overwhelming majority that participates.

Your grades will improve.

professional career.

Within your fraternity or sorority, you will automatically have a support system consisting of 50-100 (or more) people. Who doesn’t want 50-100 people to hang out with and be there for you no matter what? This is only a portion of what you’ll gain when you join a Greek organization! Older members will become some of the best mentors you could ask for in college and you will make many of the best friends of your life. You will cure that boredom and will never say that you have nothing to do or are having trouble making friends at college again.

Affective time management will become a breeze.

Greeks are some of the busiest students on campus. From meetings to social events and more, you will learn how to multi-task and stay organized. Many people can’t grasp the concept of time management, but Greeks have perfected this skill to a T. Your planner will be your best friend!

Every Greek organization has an academic chair of some sort who monitors your grades and provides you with the advice and resources needed to be the best student you can be. Each fraternity/sorority has a minimum GPA that each member has to have and maintain in order to participate. Academics are your number one priority as a college student and Greeks make sure that this stays in the top slot. Never being short of a study buddy again is also a major plus!

You will be making a difference in the community through volunteering and service. Greek organizations raise thousands of dollars each year for charities that help those in need. But Greeks don’t just stop at raising money. They participate in countless service events throughout the year that can range from volunteering at the nursing home to walking dogs at the animal shelter. This is one of the most rewarding aspects of being in Greek life and will be one of the most gratifying experiences you’ll have in your life!

You will gain a strong professional network. As well as sharing a bond between the active members in your Greek organization, you also have a bond with all of the alumni that still hold your organization so close to their heart. Who you know is one of the most important tools to get a job these days. Knowing alumni that have already established themselves in the professional world will make getting a job after graduation much less difficult and less frightening.

You will be a part of an unexplainable bond that will last for much longer than just four years. Greeks often say, “It’s not four years, it’s for life.” Being a part of a Greek organization provides you not only with friendship for life, but it gives you a common bond that has been passed down from the organization’s founders. You’re a part of something that’s so strong in its values that it’s been in existence for hundreds of years. My organization will often have alumni come back and most of them have remained friends for decades and their friendship continues to strengthen with age.

5 WAYS TO SHOW YOUR SCHOOL SPIRIT AT CENTRAL By Alayssia Jabiro

1. Tailgate with your family and friends

Bring your family and friends along for a good ol’ fashioned tailgate, CMU style! Be sure to wear your maroon and gold – “Ooh AH, proud to be a Chippewa!”

2. Gear up at the bookstore

The CMU Bookstore has everything you need to show your school spirit, from CMU-themed bumper stickers, license plate holders, and lanyards, to any maroon and gold article of clothing you could want.

3. Homecoming day parade

During Homecoming Weekend there are plenty of ways to get involved including Spirit Day, Movie Day, the hunt for the CMU medallion, campus chalking, the 5k race and of course the football game!

4. Learn the alma mater

“Alma Mater, hear us now; ever more we praise thee. Hear us pledge our sacred vow, ever to defend thee. Mighty Mother, Queen of Earth eternal, precious emblem of our lives Supreme; Ever symbolizing truth and knowledge in glorified esteem. Alma Mater, hear us now; ever more we praise thee. Hear us pledge our sacred vow, ever to defend thee.”

Written by Ruth Mavis, class of ‘27

5. Take lots of photos

You’re busy making all these memories during your college experience, but don’t forget to save them! One of the best places to take picture on campus is at the CMU seal located next to Warriner Hall.
