STUDY SMART:

Want to maximize your study sessions? Alternate periods of focus with a movement break every 30 to 45 minutes. Even short bursts of exercise can help increase brain connections, which improves memory, information processing, and energy. Take a 30 minute walk between classes, hit the gym with flash cards in hand, or climb the stairs in your dorm while mentally rehearing your study material. Hand Stretches

Nutrition Power

Neck Rolls

Hang your hands down by your sides. Open your palms as wide as you can and hold for 5 seconds. Make a light fist and repeat 5 times. Slowly grasp and release a stress ball.

Roll your head slowly from side to side with eyes closed, breathing deeply

Stay Hydrated

Boost your brain power by maintaining adequate nutrition. Keeping a steady flow of nutrition with 3 meals per day and healthy snacks helps to stabilize blood sugar for steady concentration and memory. Easy to eat snacks like vegetable sticks, fruits, nuts, cheese sticks, yogurt, or popcorn can help maintain energy without leaving you feeling bloated and overstuffed.

Try these quick study stretches to refresh your focus, boost memory, increase circulation and release tension and stress!

Ankle Pumps Flex your foot for 5 seconds, then point your toes for 5 seconds and repeat. Stretch as far as you can in both directions.

A dehydrated brain has less efficient thinking, memory, and concentration. Stay hydrated by drinking at least 64 ounces of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic fluids per day.

Art has been created since the dawn of humankind. Some of the earliest examples of creativity have been found on ancient cave walls. The urge to create is deeply rooted in all of us, which may explain why it’s so beneficial.

Think Outside the Box Working on a creative outlet pushes your brain to communicate with itself. The creative centers of your brain will begin making new connections with other areas. This brain “exercise” will help your mind solve future problems in more “out of the box” solutions!

Only Happy Accidents Clear your mind by working on an art project. Our daily lives are full of millions of thoughts! Art provides a buffer from these thoughts. It is a great way to take a break from stress and be with your creativity.

Accomplishments Just Feel Good Starting something and seeing it through is fulfilling. The best thing about art is there are no right answers! You decide when your masterpiece is ready for viewing. Show it to friends and family members, it’s a great conversation starter.

Know Your Emotions Art is an opportunity to connect with and express yourself. How you see the world and how you feel will spill out into your creations. Understanding how you think and feel helps you prepare for future emotional needs.

Pick Up a Paint Brush... Or a pencil, or anything that will get your creativity flowing. The benefits of art are well worth the time it takes. From brain neuron communication to emotional maturity and stress relief, art is the next cardio! So get out there and create.

HOW TO SCORE

WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK Confidence can be found all around you, and it’s a lot cheaper than you might think. Check out these simple, easy and incredibly affordable ways to give you the confidence that suits you! Fitness confidence…. Head to the Student Activity Center. The SAC is a free service to all CMU students. It’s equipped with an indoor track, basketball and volleyball courts, a gym, weight room, pool and much more. This free resource is the perfect way to score some serious fitness confidence as you tackle exercises one day at a time.

Academic confidence…. Join a registered student organization or an oncampus organization that applies to your major or personal interests. There are numerous RSO’s and campus organizations for every major, minor and

personal interest you can think of. Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet people, help advance your academic career and give you an edge to your educational tool box.

Wardrobe confidence…. Start hunting for hidden treasures at second-hand shops. Consignment stores are full of clothing deals for super low prices. If you’re in need of a new outfit or brand new wardrobe, head over to the nearest thrift shop and let your search begin!

Hair confidence…. Donate your hair to non-profit services who specialize in creating wigs. If you’re looking to spice up your hairstyle, consider making the chop. Short hair is a huge trend, so if you’re looking to gain a new style and change the life of someone who needs a wig, consider donating your hair to a non-profit company.

LIVE HEALTHY Believe it or not, stress is extremely unhealthy. It has been called the “silent killer” because it can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, chest pain and irregular heartbeat. Don’t let those facts stress you out! There are easy ways you can keep up your body healthy enough to fight through it.

Take a Daily Multivitamin

A daily multivitamin is the secret weapon for a healthy life. While stressed out, your body is in a more critical state of work. This makes your diet more much more important. Fueling your body with pizza and ramen during a hard work week is only going to slow you down. A daily vitamin will support the holes in your diet and make sure your body is getting what it needs.

WAYS TO MAKE A

1. Pay for the person in line behind you at the coffee shop. One small act of kindness has the potential to make someone’s day, or even week. 2. If you make eye contact with anyone in passing, smile at them. You never know what someone is going through and how a smile can turn their day around. 3. Hold the door open for the people walking behind you. It’s as simple as that. 4. Compliment them. Say you love their outfit, their smile or even their attitude. Any kind praise will make a stranger feel confident and appreciated. 5. Bust out your best knock-knock joke. If you think it’s funny, chances are someone else will too. Even if they don’t, they’ll appreciate the effort. 6. Donate. Old clothing, furniture, time or money. Even though you may not always see who you’re donating to, your donation is critical to someone in need.

7. Be a patient driver. Take the time to allow a pedestrian to cross. Try not to cut off the older woman in front of you. You’re not the only one trying to reach a destination. Be patient. 8. Offer to help carry someone’s shopping bags if you see that they’re struggling. Your help could easily cut the time of their task in half compared to them doing it by themselves. 9. Leave your waiter/waitress a small note complimenting their service (along with a nice tip). A nice tip is great, but giving a worker in the food industry words of affirmation doesn’t happen often. 10. If you find a coupon you don’t need among your others while you’re in line at the store, give it to someone else in line. Supermarkets are almost always crowded with customers; someone around you probably doesn’t have one and would like to save the money.

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN MAXIMIZE HAPPINESS WITH WORKOUT Exercise is one of the biggest mood-boosting activities there is, and just 20 minutes of exercise can influence your mood for up to 12 hours. Exercise is proven to improve body image and self esteem; making it a part of your routine contributes to a better mood and a more positive self image. Make it Social

Know Yourself

One of the easiest ways to maximize positivity within your workout is to do it with friends, or to make friends in the process. Take some pals and go on a walk around campus, or join a fitness class and meet some new people. Being social while you exercise will make it more enjoyable, and you’ll be more likely to stick with it.

If you’re a competitive person, seek out activities that don’t put you in competition with others so that you’ll be able to properly relax and enjoy it. If you tend to be a little easier going, try a competitive sport for your workout to keep you engaged and interested.

Take it Outside Going outdoors to complete your workout can help improve your mood even more, and it makes people feel less stressed about their exercise. Jog through one of the many parks around campus, practice yoga in one of the residential hall courtyards, or rally a group and play a game of volleyball on the sand volleyball courts. Outside exercise is one of the most relaxing experiences!

Add Some Variety to your Workouts Be sure to mix it up! People tend to focus on classic cardio for exercise, but strength training is just as beneficial to your body and mind; it has been shown to improve body image and reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. Not to mention, cardio could be something nontraditional like dancing or swimming. Don’t force yourself to go on a run every day if you hate it; mix it up, find some stuff you’re good at and enjoy doing and work it into your regular schedule.

Easy Ways to Live a

Lifestyle Finding the time to practice and live a healthy lifestyle is easier than it sounds. Here are a few simple ways in which anyone can live healthy life without putting a dent in your time, wallet and energy. Add Exercise to your Daily Regimen

Catch Up on Some ZZZ’s

Exercise is a common attribute associated with a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something anyone can do no matter when and where. Carving out time between class or in the evening to exercise for 30 minutes five days a week is manageable. Exercise in the comfort of your dorm, apartment or home, or pay a visit to the SAC’s gym, weight room or pool for an enjoyable workout environment.

Sleep is a crucial step to living a healthy lifestyle, and it’s a perfect excuse to catch up on some zzz’s. Experts say people should be getting eight hours of sleep every night, so plan your night accordingly. Although it may be hard, putting your phone away an hour before bed can help you fall asleep faster and assist you in getting those crucial hours of rest.

Practice Healthy Eating

A stressful week of class can make you feel mentally and emotionally exhausted. To combat anxiety, focus on practicing healthy, calming activities. Going for a walk, practicing yoga, listening to your favorite songs and taking a step away from your cell phone are just some of the many ways you can calm your mind. Find one that fits you.

Eating healthy isn’t as scary as it sounds. The cafeterias on campus offer healthy meal options on a daily basis, and the shelves at grocery stores are filled with nutritious foods and products. Healthy eating doesn’t need to be difficult -- making small changes in your diet can make a huge difference.

foods that will give your energy a boost

Many students go straight to caffeine when they start dozing off in class. Little do they know, there are foods that will help give them an energy boost. In college it’s not always easy to grab a healthy meal, but here are a few quick options to grab on your way out the door.

Delicious Raw Almonds Raw almonds are a perfect snack for on the go. Filled with protein, fiber and healthy fats, this snack will leave you sustained for hours. Don’t forget to grab a handful before heading to your next class.

Mmm, Peanut Butter Peanut butter is the perfect snack to pair with apples, rice cakes and more. It is a calorie-dense food that gives you the energy you need. Peanut butter will help you hold off hunger by giving you the fats, protein and fiber you need to get through your classes.

Go Bananas! A banana is the most convenient snack for college students hands down. Filled

with fiber and potassium, bananas will keep you sustained for hours. Just pick one off the bunch and throw it in your backpack for later; you will be set all day.

Yay Oatmeal! If you didn’t know, oatmeal is filled with fiber. Fiber takes a long time to digest, which will leave you satisfied for hours. Eating oatmeal in the morning will help you stay focused and get through your classes.

Splash, Splash Water has never-ending benefits. Drinking water can boost energy levels without the unneeded calories that are often found in sports drinks and caffeine. Try adding fruit or lemons to give you the extra boost all day.
