festival 2013
We once again invite all of you to the Afrovibes programme 2013. We have a strong focus this year on pieces created by young African writers, choreographers and directors. This focus speaks of young urban contemporary stories from Africa, theatrical pieces that have a lovely universal appeal. As curator of the festival I find it exciting that this year we pay homage to a next generation of storytelllers. Young people all over the world are dealing with the same issues and the same needs and desires, in Africa as well as in Europe. As curator of the festival I feel that we should be like shifting sands, constantly going through an evolution, discovering what is going around and happening in our main cities in Africa. So that we keep the festival thought provoking. I am looking forward to yet again visit Amsterdam with a bunch of travelling African players who will appear in works that are either dramatic or movement based. As the clock keeps ticking the excitement is building up. Sibongeleni James Ngcobo, Artistic Director Een festival van actueel theater, dans, muziek en spoken word vanuit Afrika. Krimpende kunstbudgetten maken het riskant om onbekend talent uit het buitenland te programmeren. Wij blijven juist zoeken naar dat talent. Omdat we het nodig vinden en over grenzen willen blijven kijken. Dat kunnen wij doen dankzij onze subsidiĂŤnten*. Samen met James Ngcobo en Gregory Maqoma speuren we naar nieuwe trends, topics en talent in kunst, muziek en design in Afrika. Een greep uit het programma: Mamela Nyamza, een van de grote dansers en performance artists uit Zuid-Afrika brengt de voorstelling Hatched. Florent Mahoukou uit Congo en Gregory Maqoma uit Zuid-Afrika combineren streetdance uit Brazzaville en urban street dance uit Johannesburg. Mwenya Kabwe uit Zambia brengt innovatief locatietheater over migratie in Afrika. We hebben een uitgebreid Artists in Residence programma met Afrikaanse en Nederlandse kunstenaars, muziek, het Festival CafĂŠ, after-show talks, spontane optredens, post-show drinks en een after-party. Kom binnen en ervaar jong urban Afrika. De Congolese choreograaf en danser Florent Mahoukou en de maestro van de moderne dans in Zuid-Afrika Gregory Maqoma ontleenden de ingrediĂŤnten voor Wake Up aan het straatleven van de stad waarin zij wonen en die zij kennen: Brazzaville en Johannesburg. Wake Up combineert de straatdans van Brazzaville met urban streetdance uit Johannesburg en vermengt beide met principes van moderne dans. Een kleurrijke en levendige combinatie van Congolese en Zuid-Afrikaanse urban dansritmes. Een zoektocht naar de artistieke mogelijkheden voor moderne dans in Afrika. Congolese choreographer and dancer Florent Mahoukou and the maestro of modern dance in South Africa Gregory Maqoma share strong affinities in their vision of contemporary dance and choreography. They found the ingredients for Wake Up in the streets of the city in which they each live: Brazzaville and Johannesburg. Wake Up combines Brazzaville street dance with urban dance from Johannesburg, mixing both with principles of modern dance. A colorful and lively combination of Congolese and South African urban dance rhythms. A search into the artistic possibilities in contemporary dance in Africa. 5

Between Us gaat over twee vreemden die elkaar ontmoeten in een stadsjungle, onzeker, kwetsbaar en afhankelijk. Zij tasten elkaar af, draaien om elkaar heen en ontwikkelen uiteindelijk een vriendschap. Tijdens de dans bouwt de spanning op, de dansers trekken elkaar aan en stoten weer af, houden vast en laten weer los. Iemand die je lief hebt kun je misschien wel haten. En iemand die je haat heb je lief. Between Us focuses on a relationship between two strangers who meet in a city jungle inhabited by uncertainty, fragility and dependence. They feel each other, move around each other and finally develop a friendship. While dancing, tension between the dancers grows, attracting and repelling each other, holding and letting go again with a pull between stillness and response. Someone you love you might hate. And someone you hate you love.

Mamela Nyamza is een geprezen en provocerende choreograaf en danser die in haar werk het geseksualiseerde lichaam betrekt, de rol van de man en vrouw en de grenzen opzoekt van dans. Mamela Nyamza laat in Hatched de persoonlijke, intieme en cultureel bepaalde vragen zien van een vrouw over haar seksualiteit binnen de tradities en rituelen van een huwelijk. Zij ontdekt daarbij haar ware identiteit en gevoel. Een dansvoorstelling van multi-award winnende ZuidAfrikaanse danseres en choreograaf Mamela Nyamza. Mamela Nyamza is a highly acclaimed and provocative choreographer and dancer whose work considers the engendered body, and the contemporary definition of dance, through her experimentation around the themes of men and (mostly) women’s roles and issues. In Hatched, Mamela Nyamza brings to stage the personal, intimate and culturally specific questions a woman asks herself about her sexuality within the traditions and rituals of a wedding. This movement piece seeks to convey deeply personal and challenging issues of culture, tradition and a woman’s evolving sexuality within the customary rites and rituals of marriage, until she realizes her true identity.

Een teaser van de internationale samenwerking tussen ISH, Moving Into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) in Johannesburg en Zuluboy. Met I Feel Ya gaat ISH samen met MIDM op avontuur in een wereld waar geen geluid bestaat. I Feel Ya is een voorstelling waarbij een wonderlijke fusie plaatsvindt tussen westerse en Afrikaanse dansen theaterstijlen. Een voorstelling die voor jongeren met en zonder gehoor even zinnenprikkelend is. Want theater moet je niet horen of zien, dat moet je voelen. I Feel Ya was in september 2013 te zien bij het festival Dance Umbrella in Zuid-Afrika en is gemaakt onder leiding van Marco Gerris (ISH) en Themba Nkabinde (MIDM). Deze teaser zal worden afgesloten met een jam sessie tussen DJ Irie, Beatboxer Abdelhadi Baaddi en rapper Zuluboy. The teaser of an international collaboration between Crossover Dance Company ISH (NL), ethnical rapper Zuluboy (SA) and Moving into Dance Mophatong (SA) Each of our five senses tells us the story of our surroundings. Although they can be deceptive, we learn to trust them as a means to get a grip on reality. But what if you cannot hear? With I Feel Ya, ISH, Zuluboy and Moving into Dance Mophatong join forces and take you on an adventure into a world where no sound exists. This piece is equally inspiring for people with or without a hearing disability. A show where Hip Hop meets traditional music, meets afro-fusion, meets breakdance, meets sign language.

De Zambiaanse theatermaakster Mwenya Kabwe verbindt in Afrocartography theater, poĂŤtisch spoken word en muziek tot een droomachtige voorstelling over migratie en identiteit. Een locatievoorstelling in het theater waarbij het publiek een aantal personages (een Reiziger, een Afropolitan, een Koloniaal en een Kaartenmaker) volgt door de ruimtes van het MC theater. In Afrocartography Zambian director and theatermaker Mwenya Kabwe connects theater, spoken word, poetry and music into a dreamlike performance on migration and identity on the African continent and the sense of displacement on a physical, psychological and emotional level. A site-specific performance where the audience follows the characters (a Traveler, an Afropolitan, a Colonial and a Mapmaker) through the spaces of the MC theater. Afrocartography is eerder opgevoerd in Barcelona, Kaapstad en Johannesburg / previously staged in Barcelona, Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Mawilla, een jongen in het township Itsoseng, verliest zijn grote liefde Dolly aan de prostitutie en moet toezien hoe zijn geliefde ten onder gaat. Itsoseng is een one-man-show en een aanklacht tegen de onverschilligheid, het cynisme en de incompetentie van de overheid in Zuid-Afrika. Maar het is ook een universeel liefdesverhaal over hoop, teleurstelling en valse verwachtingen. Itsoseng geeft een levendig beeld van het turbulente leven in een ZuidAfrikaans township. Mawilla, a young man in the township of Itsoseng, loses the love of his life, a pretty girl called Dolly, to prostitution. Mawilla rejects her and helplessly watches Dolly’s steady dissipation and downfall. Itsoseng is a one-man show and an indictment of the indifference, cynicism and incompetence of the government in South Africa today. But also it is an universal love story about hope, disappointment and false expectations. Itsoseng gives a vivid picture of turbulent life in a South African township. THEATER Expectant is een ‘coming of age’ verhaal tegen de achtergrond van 400 jaar koloniale geschiedenis van jonge, blanke, Engels sprekende ZuidAfrikanen en hoe hun identiteit altijd verbonden is met de vraag wat het betekent om “uit dit land te komen”. Een middernachtelijk gesprek van een jonge vrouw die ontdekt dat ze zwanger is en niet weet of ze het kan verdragen dat er nieuw leven geboren wordt dat dezelfde twijfels en onzekerheden zal hebben als zij zelf. Expectant toont met zwarte humor de breuklijnen in de creoolse samenleving van Zuid-Afrika en een ontnuchterende blik op het ‘nieuwe’ Zuid-Afrika. Expectant is a contemporary coming of age story told against the backdrop of a 400 year colonial history of young, white, English speaking South Africans; and how their identity revolves and dissolves around what it means to be “from this country”. Posed as the late-night conversation-stains of a young woman who finds out she’s pregnant and isn’t sure she can stomach having another version of her own uncertainties materialise in front of her. Expectant adresses the fault lines in South Africa’s creolized culture with a dark sense of humour and sobering interpretation of the “New” South Africa. Expectant won de Standard Ovation Award, National Arts Festival in 2013.

Hoe voelt het iemand anders te zijn? Becoming Another, Becoming You is een internationale samenwerking tussen dichters en multidisciplinaire artiesten van Poetry Circle Nowhere uit Nederland en van Badilisha Poetry Exchange uit Kaapstad..Babs Gons (NL) en Linda Kaoma (ZA) ontwikkelen een gezamenlijke presentatie vanuit het thema ‘in de huid kruipen van een ander’, om tot nieuwe verhalen te komen. De eerste uitwerking van deze samenwerking is op het festival te zien. Schrijfster Christine Otten geeft 16 november met een Pecha Kucha haar invulling aan het thema ‘in de huid kruipen van een ander’. Deze presentatie gaat erover hoe zij door een ontmoeting en vriendschap met de Afro-Amerikaanse dichter Umar Bin Hassan en het schrijven van zijn levensverhaal uiteindelijk zichzelf terug vond. . How does it feel to be someone else? Babs Gons (NL) and Linda Kaoma (SA) will work towards a presentation about what it feels like to crawl into someone else’s skin, to retell someone else’s story and rediscover their own. This presentation will be the first outcome of this ongoing collaboration. Writer Christine Otten will give a Pecha Kutcha on 16 November about her interpretation of ‘what it is like to be someone else’. This presentation will be about her encounter and friendship with Afro-American poet Umar Bin Hassan and rediscovering herself by writing his life story.

Backseat Stories is een theatrale beleving op de achterbank van een taxi. Afrovibes Festival nodigt het publiek uit voor een taxirit tussen MC theater en Bijlmer Parktheater in Amsterdam. Tijdens deze taxirit krijgt de bezoeker een intiem optreden op de achterbank van de taxi door spoken word artiesten van Poetry Circle Nowhere uit Amsterdam die zich laten inspireren door verhalen uit ZuidAfrika. Dit optreden gaat over ervaringen uit de stad, hoe je je in de stad verplaatst en over de mensen die je onderweg ontmoet. Experience an intimate performance on the backseat of a taxi between MC theatre and Bijlmer Parktheatre. Spoken word artists from Poetry Circle Nowhere get their inspiration from South African Stories of city life. They will bring this together in performances about moving through town and the people they meet, when they drive with you in a taxi. AIR ARTIST IN RESIDENCY Zuid-Afrikaanse en Nederlandse artiesten maken speciaal voor Afrovibes Festival 2013 korte onderzoeksvoorstellingen rondom identiteit en de verbintenis naar hun verleden.
Ntando Cele (ZA, NL, Zwitserland) onderzoekt in haar performance Black Notice haar positie als Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar die in Europa leeft en werkt. Zij gelooft dat er een Black Experience en een White Experience is. Wat betekent het om zwart te zijn in de wereld van vandaag? Black Notice is a performance installation by Ntando Cele from South Africa. She believes there is a so called “black experience” and a so called “white experience”. What does it mean to be black in today’s world? Is there a transnational or globalized notion of Blackness? Duur: 15 tot 20 minuten

Quinsy Gario (NL, Ned. Antillen) maakt A village called Gario. Een installatie met projecties van foto’s en illustraties van een dorp in de Centraal Afrikaanse Republiek met een performance van dichter Quinsy Gario. Quinsy maakt een reconstrucie van zijn familiegeschiedenis, laat feit en fictie met elkaar afwissen en schept een wereld van blind vertrouwen, liefde en afstand. In the performance installation ‘A Village Called Gario’ Quinsy Gario (NL, NL Antilles) explores his hypothetic rootes to a small village in the Central African Republic. In When I take a step back vertelt Joya Mooi (NL, ZA) haar familieverhaal aan de hand van beelden van haar familie afgewisseld met haar eigen zangstem. Zij zingt haar eigen composities onder akoestisch begeleiding, samen met muziek van Afrikaanse inspiratiebronnen. Joya brengt korte verhalen over haar ouders, hun rol in het ANC, de corruptie, de schoonheid van het land en bovenal haar liefde voor Zuid-Afrika. Joya Mooi (NL, ZA) takes us through the gripping story of her family ‘When I take a step back’. She uses old images of her family and the power of her own voice. She sings a number of her own original songs alongside work from South African artists who shaped her life. Joya shares the story of her parents, their role in the ANC, corruption, the beauty of the country and above all her love for South Africa. Duur: 15 tot 20 minuten

Een buitengewoon muzikale ervaring door The Brother Moves On, een kunsten muziekcollectief uit Johannesburg. De groep noemt zichzelf “a time and space exercise” en zoekt de grenzen op binnen performance art door post-folk rock, funk, en psychedelica te mixen met theatrale vormen. Zowel in Zuid-Afrika als in het buitenland hebben zij een enorm succes met optredens op uiteenlopende locaties zoals musea, kerken, verlaten gebouwen en op daken in de binnenstad van Johannesburg. The Brother Moves On (TBMO) is a musical shape shifter, a Jozibased, art and music collective who call themselves “a time and space exercise”. They bend the rules of performance art, fusing a fierce mix of post-folk rock, funk and psychedelia with theatricality and storytelling. This is transition music for a transition generation, experimental and expressive, played in unique spaces from museums and churches to derelict buildings and inner city rooftops.”

Ethnical rapper Zuluboy uit ZuidAfrika en gitarist/zanger Joep Pelt en zijn band brengen hun muziekstijlen samen tijdens het Afrovibes Festival. Eerder stonden Joep Pelt en Zuluboy in het Bimhuis met legendarische Black Moses Ngwenya. De samenwerking tijdens Afrovibes is de start voor het muziekproject Mbaqanga: Soweto Soul, waarin Nederlandse en ZuidAfrikaanse artiesten een hedendaagse versie maken van de Mbaqanga muziekstijl en deze combineren met Hiphop, Kwaito en Afrosoul.
Ethnical rapper Zuluboy from South Africa is collaborating with Dutch guitarist and singer Joep Pelt and his band. They fuse their music styles and explore a renewed version of Mbaqanga: Soweto Soul music. A fusion of Mbaqanga, Hiphop, Kwaito and Afrosoul.

WALKING THE STREETS DURBAN AMSTERDAM Tyler Dolan uit Durban (ZA) en Kitchell Samuel uit Amsterdam maken een fotografische en multidisciplinaire documentaire van het leven van subculturen en het straatleven in Amsterdam. Hieruit volgt een fotoexpositie tijdens Afrovibes waar beelden uit Amsterdam naast die uit Durban komen te hangen. Beelden uit Amsterdam Zuidoost in Zuid-Afrikaans perspectief. Tyler Dolan from Durban (SA) is collaborating with multi-disciplinary artist Kitchell Samuel from Amsterdam in their research and documentation of subcultures in Amsterdam. This will be brought together in a photo and multidisciplinary photo exhibition at Afrovibes.

EXPOSITIE In het Festival Café zijn exposities te zien: Walking the Streets van de ZuidAfrikaanse fotograaf Tyler Dolan en Kitchell Samuel (NL), Afrika Lacht van artiesten duo ‘Common Sense’ van Leila Anderson (ZA) en Stan Wannet (NL) en Amsterdam Revisited van Ruan Hoffmann. Leila Anderson (ZA) en Stan Wannet (NL) (artiesten duo ‘Common Sense’) brengen theater en beeldende kunst samen in hun performance installatie Afrika Lacht. Een multidiciplinair project van foto’s, theaterinterventies, sculturen en zwarte humor. Samen vormt dit één werk dat een ongebruikelijk en ongemakkelijk perspectief geeft op Afrika, op de relatie met het koloniaal verleden en op de wijze waarop Afrika in de beeldvorming wordt gerepresenteerd.

A mixed media live installation, Afrika Lacht (Africa smiles) by the artist duo ‘Common Sense’, Leila Anderson (SA) and Stan Wannet (NL). This is a darkly comic treatment of denial and stubbornness about the colonial past in the face of changing realities and current perspectives. Using live storytelling to bring a potential past into the present moment, viewers of the work will be invited into the surreal world of the exhibited artefacts.
