Why "Ms." Magnet?

So why the “Ms.” in Ms. Magnet ? Ms. was a magazine in the 1970s that served as a statement of defiance and a propellant for the women’ s liberation movement. At the time, the fledgling feminist movement was dismissed in mainstream media. Most magazines marketed to women were limited to advice about finding a husband, raising babies, helping marriages, or using the right cosmetics. Ms. was the first national magazine to make feminist voices audible, feminist journalism tenable, and a feminist worldview available to the public. Its founders, Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes, were heroes in their own rights and used this magazine as their way to charge the growing women’ s liberation movement. With almost 300,000 readers, women worldwide were able to unite and educate themselves through Ms. ’ s indepth political analysis and reporting. Ms. revolutionized the narrative of how women viewed their place in society and we at Magnet want to channel this same spirit. High school in general has been a place where students, regardless of gender, can find it hard to find passion or purpose, but with the ability to write and be empowered we hope to see this change at Magnet.

Cheerleading, for example, began at a time where universities admitted exclusively men. Prior to the inclusion of women, the sport had been recognized as a status symbol and trophy of accomplishment. Although this is just one small and ostensibly unimportant example of men abjuring themselves from femininity, it serves as evidence to a wider argument at hand: men cannot handle being compared to women, causing them to criticize any activity that appears to be ‘too feminine’ in nature.

Man’s presupposed idea of woman, a weak-minded and feeble-bodied secondary member of society, has led them to not only distance themselves from feminine subjects and activities but to also criticize them.

To many men, it is not enough to not take part in a ‘girl’s thing’, they must also have to criticize it to prove just how masculine they are. Conversely, this teaches women that they too should not act as women, since doing so is looked down upon by men. This means that women who do act traditionally feminine are subject to the harsh criticism from both men and from women who want to prove themselves to men. Yes, this is a generalization and not all men behave this way.

Regardless, this phenomenon is still affecting western culture, and therefore it must be addressed What makes this problem so complex is the fact that men’s criticisms of feminine activities do not exist in a vacuum. Their harsh dialogue about women not only perpetuates their lack of respect for women, but it actually creates a sense of competition within women.

It tells us that we too must distance ourselves from traditionally feminine activities so we can gain the approval of men. This cultural incongruity backs women into corners, telling us that we cannot act like women, since this makes us too feminine and therefore weak; paradoxically, we also cannot act like men, as this makes us competition that can destroy the fragile ego of a man.

Ultimately, what we are taught is that we can not like being too feminine, but we conversely cannot act unfeminine either.

- Simone De Beauvoir This brings us back to the question of how “pick me girls' ' are made, and what the solution is. As previously discussed, western culture’s male flight has ingrained into women the belief that feminine behavior is worthy of denigration.

We are taught from a young age that previously maledominated activities like cheerleading are too feminine and have consequently lost their place in the social hierarchy. This is why pick me girls are made.

"Pick-me girls" use this unfortunate social construct to their advantage. If men view femininity as a liability, then why not weaponize other girls’ femininity against them? Once you look at how we raise young girls, it is easy to realize why women can so often become obsequious with men and put other women down. "Pick me girls" really aren' t the problem; rather, they are a symptom of a much broader problem: the fact that women crave men’s authority to protect them from their own liberty.

At first read, this phenomenon sounds backward- as if we should blame women for their own subjugation. However, this actually denotes the opposite.

To fix the internal problem with women- the problem of having to compete with other women over who is less feminine and thereby more deserving of a man’s love- we must shift our culture.

This means that women must not abdicate themselves from taking responsibility for their own behaviors, but it also means that men can not do the same either.

GSAs, or Gender and Sexuality Alliances, are student-led organizations that unite LGBTQ+ youth and allies in order to combat issues within their communities.

Students at Caddo Magnet High campaigned for years to launch a GSA. In 2016, Gretchen Upton proposed the creation of a GSA to Magnet’s previous administration.

At first, Upton was not denied the allowance to start a GSA, but she was encouraged to operate under a set of conditions other clubs were not subject to.

Upton elaborated on what they thought this meant: “It wasn’t our existence really. It was how we existed that they had a problem with. Couldn’t be too loud, couldn’t be too honest, couldn’t make anyone uncomfortable. And that discomfort kept being passed around and reassigned.”

Last spring, the arrival of a new administration prompted us to propose the creation of a GSA on campus once more. Thankfully, our proposal was accepted.

GSAs: A Necessity for LGBTQ+ Youth of the South Kenna Pettigrew & Zoha Ibrahim (CMHS SAGA Founders)

When our club became active, it gained immediate traction, garnering over 200 members in the first month alone. Now, SAGA’s membership has surpassed the size of the senior class.

In our first three months, we have taken on multiple initiatives to ensure our campus becomes more inclusive.

In early October, we partnered with Out Central Oregon in their 'Welcome Here' campaign and distributed pride flag stickers to faculty to post in their classrooms. We displayed an LGBTQ+ History Month exhibit with student art and informative posters about queer history.

These actions may seem small, but they heavily impact the queer students on campus. The unabashed presence of a GSA tells Magnet students that LGBTQ+ kids are wanted and cherished.

CMHS SAGA is the sole high school GSA in the state of Louisiana. It is a disservice to queer youth of the south that we are an outlier.

"Yes. I guess less so as a teacher, because it' s such a female dominated profession. But, if you’ve noticed, the people who run schools are mostly men, so most major decisions in schools are made by men. So, sometimes that can become a challenge."

D0 y0u feel like Magnet is unique fr0m 0ther sch00ls in its treatment 0f female teachers?

I"t' s just think it’s hard to compare Magnet to any other school, because in general it doesn’t matter who you are here, you’ll be treated with respect. Whether it' s a teacher, student, whatever. And that’s just not the same at other schools, so it’s hard to compare that."

Meghan Markle Speaks Out By: Faith Montgomery Approximately

TWO MILLION women

have left the workforce since 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead of working and providing a higher income for their household, women had to step down and take care of their children, especially when schools and daycare services were closed for a lengthy period of time.

Many people struggled financially and had to choose whether to provide for their families or take care of their children. The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, is aware of these issues, as she also experienced some of them firsthand.

Markle has proposed an accessible paid leave program for every American to The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. The paid leave could benefit both the country and the women in many ways overall.

The paid leave allows workers to care for themselves and their families when ill or injured while reducing financial insecurity. This explains how beneficial paid leave can be for so many working families around the U.S. socially and economically.

Women who take paid leave are also 93 percent more likely to be in the workforce 9 to 12 months after a child’s birth than women who don’t take paid leave. This shows how paid leave is more than just a way to help specific people but everyone in the United States of America as a whole. A greater number of women that re-enter back into the workforce will increase the economic growth of the United States.

The letter written by Duchess Meghan Markle shows why organizations and businesses should consider offering paid leave opportunities to women. Hopefully, companies will make strides towards paid leave in the coming years.

“My mom died when I was very young and it made me cherish the little moments with my loved ones and realize life is filled with both pain and beauty.”

“I wish I moved to America a lot earlier since it would have been easier for me to more smoothly assimilate.”

“When I found out about your (Sabrina’s) heart condition I prayed and prayed and prayed. God has helped me and has given me hope. Life is meaningless without hope.”

"In all honesty, no. Sometimes in class I can say one thing and it just gets ignored then five minutes later my male classmate can say the same and it's applauded. Especially when talking to authoritative figures, I feel like they almost never take my suggestions or opinions seriously."

How have your notions of being a woman changed over the years?

"I would say my concept of being a woman has changed dramatically, not just since I was little but since my involvement with GirlUp. I have learned that being a woman isn't just how you look or what you wear. It's about how strong you are, how resilient you are, and how unapoligetically you you are. "

“It means loving my family and friends like God does. You know it took me a long time to come around, but I know what my purpose is.”

What are your favorite holiday experiences? " “I like Christmas and Easter. Anything where we all can gather together and just be with each other is so important to me especially as I get older.”

What is one moment in your life that changed the way you saw the world?

"Whenever my mom died when I was 12. I had to grow up super fast and after that moment, I never really looked back. There were kids to take care of and there was just no time.”

What advice would you give your younger self?

“I would probably tell myself to have the confidence of a young girl who would be my future daughter. I wasted a lot of time not knowing my worth.”

What helped you get through hard times?

“Since I’ve had kids, it’s been you girls (daughter Kenna and two others). Knowing that if I didn’t show up for myself, I couldn’t show up for you guys.”

"It depends who I am around. Growing up girls often aren't taught how to centralize the idea of respect, as compared to a guy just expecting it, so only recently have I been able to find respect within myself. But, when looking at society and school, there is still this complete divide when it comes to how our voices and experiences are understood."

"The idea of girlhood and womanhood has very much been a journey for me and I feel like only through advocacy and leadership within GirlUp have I been able to actually shift into a new phase of confidence and pride in being independent. I n t he 80s, at t he hei ght of i t s popul ar i t y, t he punk scene was r un by mal e bands and ar t i st s.

They would often direct the anger found in punk-rock music directly onto women with hateful and misogynistic songs and fanzines with hate speech and sexist comments that would either demonize women or overly sexualize them.

By 1990, many women in the punk subculture, sick of being mocked and criticized, began working together to come up with ways to combat this treatment.

Using the previously established punk fanzine format, they began creating the first feminist zines to provide women with voices and present ideas seen as too taboo to be published by big name publications. Feminist punk band Bikini Kill’s self-titled fanzine, Bikini Kill, would be published in 1990, giving way to the Riot Grrrl movement and third wave feminism.

Riot Grrrl was a movement that completely rejected the traditional idea of what it meant to be a woman.

It provided a platform for women to discuss gender norms, sexuality, body image, and rape culture.

Famous zines included Bikini Kill, Shocking Pink, Fantastic Fanzine and Hip Mama (which is still active today). In the second issue of Fantastic Fanzine, Erika Reinstein said the Riot Grrrl movement exists “BECAUSE we girls want to create mediums that speak to US… [for] every time we pick up a pen, or an instrument, or get anything done, we are creating the revolution.”

Active throughout the nineties, the movement influenced some mainstream rock bands, including Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Zines definitely deserve recognition for some of the accomplishments of third wave feminism.

Afghanistan & Girls' Education By: Aashni Shah

The Taliban recently returned to Afghanistan after twenty years of insurgency. And with this new government, comes new rules and restrictions for Afghan women and girls. The last time they were in control was in the early 2000s, and at that time, they barred many girls and women from taking jobs or going to school. Since then, billions of dollars have been donated to girls’ education in Afghanistan, and they have made many leaps towards greater gender equality, but now that the Taliban are back, the women are worried that all their ground is lost again.

The past rules that the Taliban forced onto women included: not being allowed to be seen publicly without a man, not being allowed to have a job, being forced to cover their entire body every time they leave the house, and restricted healthcare.

The Taliban also banned all education for girls during their 1996 - 2001 rule.

This time around, they have declared that no girls above the age of twelve will be allowed to go to school or receive any education. For girls younger than twelve, they have said that education must be single-sex and girls can only have female teachers.

Currently, the country has one of the biggest education gender gaps, with only 37% of teenage girls being able to read and write, compared to 66% of boys. A third of girls are married by age eighteen.

Many people are worried about Afghan girls’ schooling, and for good reason. Some fear that they will be restricted to religious education or that there won’t be enough female teachers for all the girls.

The future of the Taliban and Afghan women remains uncertain. But many Afghan girls and women are confident for the future and hope to overcome whatever resistance they may face.

The Texas Heartbeat Act BY: CAROLINE JONES AND OMI MCGUIRK

On September 1, 2021, the Texas Heartbeat Act was passed.

This “Heartbeat Act” makes abortions punishable by fine after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks. This time period is not enough for many women to even know they are pregnant.

According to Texas Tribute, “Medical and legal experts say the term is misleading because embryos don’t possess a heart at that developmental stage.” The Texas Heartbeat Act includes women suffering from rape and incest and has strict restrictions even when the life of the mother is at risk.

Anyone involved in the procedure, such as providers, counselors, nurses, or family and friends can be sued and fined a minimum of $10,000. In most cases, women opt for medications for mild to moderate sedation during the procedure and a driver is required. Anyone that provides a ride to these patients, whether they are family, friends, or paid drivers can be sued. Both Uber and Lyft have announced that they will cover any fines their drivers incur as a result of the Texas Heartbeat Act.

This new law is greatly impacting our local abortion facility here in Shreveport, Louisiana. Women in Texas are forced to drive here for this procedure, frequently traveling over six hours. Oftentimes they’re met by protestors and some clinics have been forced to hire security guards just to keep the patients and staff safe.

Louisiana clinics are not staffed to provide for this many patients and it’s difficult to hire more staff when this new act is constantly being challenged in court. Clinics in all states surrounding Texas will continue to feel the strain for months, possibly years until the Texas Heartbeat Act is overturned if that ever even happens.

Women’s Contributions to the Story of Diwali By: Anjali Veerareddy

The celebration of Diwali is one of the most festive and beautiful times of the year. Diwali, meaning a row of lights, is celebrated by many cultures and religions around the world. The festival of lights celebrates the victory of good over evil depicted in the story of the Ramayana.

Diwali also celebrates women’s empowerment and respect for women. This festival is a celebration of Lord Rama and his wife, Sita, returning home to Ayodhya after being exiled for 14 years.

During the exile, Sita is kidnapped by King Ravanna. She experiences a series of struggles, and after Rama defeated Ravanna, they both return home to Ayodhya. In this story, Sita depicted strength and resilience throughout her complex journey with Rama. The story of the Ramanya is not just a story of a good king defeating an evil king but also a story of Sita’s strength and courage.

Other female deities are celebrated during Diwali that represent the strength of women including Laxmi, Durga, and Kali. These goddesses are associated with stories of good over evil and light triumphing over darkness. Diwali teaches individuals to respect the struggles of women and celebrate female empowerment.
