Attacca Quartet

ATTACCA QUARTET This concert marks the Attacca Quartet’s second Chamber Music Detroit appearance; they previously appeared in May of 2018 at the 75th Anniversary Gala.

The two-time GRAMMY-award winning Attacca Quartet is recognized as one of the most versatile, innovative and outstanding ensembles of its time, with a repertoire that ranges from early music to classical to electronic and video game music, and that encompasses a variety of contemporary collaborations.

Since 2021, the quartet released several recordings that embody their redefinition of what a string quartet can be. The first, Real Life, features such guest artists as Tokimonsta, Daedalus, and Anne Müller. It was followed by Of all Joys, which includes works by Phillip Glass and Arvo Pärt as well as music of the Renaissance. Their 2019 release Orange, in collaboration with composer/musician Caroline Shaw, won the 2020 GRAMMY Award for Best Chamber Music/​Small Ensemble Performance, and their follow-up album, Evergreen, won the 2023 award in the same category.

The quartet continues to perform at the world’s premier venues and festivals.

Recent highlights include Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival and Miller Theatre and Carnegie Hall in New York, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., Chamber Music Detroit, Chamber Music Austin,

the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston as well as at the Ojai, BRIC Arts and Big Ears Festivals. Outside the US, they have toured throughout South America and have appeared in Europe at Kings Place in London, the Vertavo Haydn Festival in Oslo, Gothenburg Konserthuset in Sweden, the MITO Septembre Festival in Italy, Sociedad Filarmónica de Bilbao, Strijkkwartet Biennale Amsterdam, and Strings of Autumn Festival Prague.

The founding members of the Attacca Quartet formed at the Juilliard School and made their debut at Carnegie Hall in 2003.

They subsequently won First Prize at the 7th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition.

CAROLINE SHAW This performance marks Caroline Shaw’s first Chamber Music Detroit appearance.

Caroline Shaw is a musician who moves among roles, genres, and mediums, trying to imagine a world of sound that has never been heard before but has always existed.

She works often in collaboration with others, as producer, composer, violinist, and vocalist. Caroline is the recipient of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music, several Grammy awards, an honorary doctorate from Yale, and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. This year’s projects include the score to “Fleishman is in Trouble”

(FX/Hulu), vocal work with Rosalía (MOTOMAMI), the score to Josephine Decker’s “The Sky Is Everywhere” (A24/ Apple), music for the National Theatre’s production of “The Crucible”, Justin Peck’s “Partita” with New York City Ballet, a new stage work “LIFE” (Gandini Juggling/ Merce Cunningham Trust), the premiere of “Microfictions Vol. 3” for the New York Philharmonic and Roomful of Teeth, a live orchestral score for Wu Tsang’s silent film “Moby Dick” co-composed with Andrew Yee, two albums on Nonesuch (“Evergreen” and “The Blue Hour”), the score for Helen Simoneau’s dance work “Delicate Power”, tours of Graveyards & Gardens (co-created immersive theatrical work with Vanessa Goodman), and tours with So Percussion featuring songs from “Let The Soil Play Its Simple Part” (Nonesuch), amid occasional chamber music appearances as violist (Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, La Jolla Music Society). Caroline has written over 100 works in the last decade, for Anne Sofie von Otter, Davóne Tines, Yo Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philharmonia Baroque, Seattle Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Aizuri Quartet, Attacca Quartet, The Crossing, Dover Quartet, Calidore Quartet, Brooklyn Rider, Miro Quartet, I Giardini, Ars Nova Copenhagen,

Ariadne Greif, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Britt Festival, and the Vail Dance Festival.

She has contributed production to albums

by Rosalía, Woodkid, and Nas. Her work as vocalist or composer has appeared in several films, TV series, and podcasts including The Humans, Bombshell, Yellowjackets, Maid, Dark, Beyonce’s Homecoming, Tár, Dolly Parton’s America, and More Perfect. Her favorite color is yellow, and her favorite smell is rosemary.

Pacifica Quartet

PACIFICA QUARTET This performance marks the Pacifica Quartet’s 11th Chamber Music Detroit appearance. They most recently appeared in September of 2018.

With a career spanning nearly three decades, the multiple Grammy Awardwinning Pacifica Quartet has achieved international recognition as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today. The Quartet is known for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and often-daring repertory choices.

Having served as quartet-in-residence at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music for the past decade, the Quartet also leads the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival, and was previously the quartet-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2021, the Pacifica Quartet received a second Grammy Award for Contemporary Voices, an exploration of music by three Pulitzer Prize-winning composers: Shulamit Ran, Jennifer Higdon, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

Formed in 1994, the Pacifica Quartet quickly won chamber music’s top competitions, including the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award. In 2002 the ensemble was honored with Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award and the appointment to Lincoln Center’s The Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two), and in 2006 was awarded a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. With its powerful energy and captivating, cohesive sound, the Pacifica has established itself as the embodiment of the senior American quartet sound.

Upcoming 2023-24 performances and recordings include projects with clarinetist Anthony McGill and guitarist Sharon Isbin.

In addition, the Quartet will collaborate with soprano Karen Slack for performances of James Lee III’s “A Double Standard,” a new song cycle commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Chamber Music Detroit, and the Shriver Hall Concert Series. Named the University of Chicago’s Don Michael Randel Ensemble in Residence for the 2023-24 season, the Pacifica Quartet will perform and give masterclasses throughout the year. Additional appearances include Krannert Center, Denver Friends of Chamber Music, and Caramoor in addition to tonight’s performance.

The members of the Pacifica Quartet serve as quartet-in-residence and full-time faculty members at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Prior to their appointment, the Quartet was on the faculty of the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana from 2003 to 2012, and also served as resident performing artist at the University of Chicago for 17 years.

KAREN SLACK Karen Slack’s appearances on October 14 & 15 mark her Chamber Music Detroit debut.

Known for performances that “ripped the audience’s hearts out” (Opera News), Karen Slack is “not only one of the nation’s most celebrated sopranos, but a leading voice in changing-making spaces in classical music” (Trilloquy). A recipient of the 2022

Sphinx Medal of Excellence, Slack is an Artistic Advisor for Portland Opera, serves on the board of the American Composers Orchestra and Astral Artists, and holds a faculty position at the Banff Centre.

Highlights of Slack’s 2023-2024 season include her debuts with the New York Philharmonic and two performances as guest artist at Chamber Music Detroit, plus a return to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, a return to the Festival Internacional de Música Sacra Bogotá in Colombia, and a performance with the Pacifica Quartet in Denver. Slack embarks upon an ambitious new recording project in collaboration with ONEComposer and pianist Michelle Cann, to be released on Azica Records, and debuts her new commissioning project African Queens, an evening-length vocal recital of new art songs.

Slack has amassed a body of work that reflects her dedication to elevating works by living composers, particularly Black artists. In recent seasons, she has premiered programs including Songs in Flight at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, two separate compositions by Hannibal Lokumbe with the Nashville Symphony and Oklahoma City Philharmonic; Jasmine Barnes’ Songs of Paul with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall; Damien Geter’s Justice Symphony with the Fresno Symphony and The Washington Chorus; and Joel Thompson and Andrea Davis Pinkney’s A Snowy Day with Houston Grand Opera.

She has performed on the stages of the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera,

Scottish Opera, San Francisco Opera, Dallas Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and many others. She has appeared with the Melbourne and Sydney symphonies, the Bergen Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra in the world premiere of Hannibal Lokumbe’s Healing Tones led by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

CASEY ROBARDS This performance marks Casey Robards’ first Chamber Music Detroit appearance.

Casey Robards is a pianist, conductor and vocal coach known for her sensitive musicality, expert collaborative skill and stylistic versatility. Her repertoire includes art song, opera, musical theatre, spirituals and gospel, and chamber music. She has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Central and South America and Asia. As a collaborative pianist, Robards partners with Ollie Watts Davis, LaToya Lain and Karen Slack in recital programs promoting justice and truth telling through the spirituals and art song of Black composers. She co-directs the American Spiritual Intensive in Michigan with Dr. Everett McCorvey. A gifted and committed pedagogue, Dr. Robards is Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois.

AEOLUS QUARTET These concerts mark the Aeolus Quartet’s sixth set of Chamber Music Detroit appearances; they most recently appeared in April of 2022 at Seligman Performing Arts Center.

With performances acclaimed for both “high-octane” excitement (Strad) and “dusky lyricism” (New York Times), the Aeolus Quartet has been awarded prizes at nearly every major competition in the United States and performed across the globe with showings “worthy of a majorleague quartet” (Dallas Morning News).

Formed in 2008, the Quartet has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia in a range of venues, including Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Reinberger Recital Hall at Severance Hall, The Library of Congress, Renwick Gallery, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center and Dupont Underground, a subterranean streetcar station in DC’s Dupont Circle. They were the 2013-2015 Graduate Resident String Quartet at the Juilliard School and are currently Quartet-in-Residence at Musica Viva NY. The Quartet has collaborated with many of today’s leading artists, including Renee Fleming, Ida Kavafian, Joel Krosnick, Peter Wiley, Michael Tree, and Paul Neubauer.

Dedicated to sharing the joy of chamber music with new audiences, the Aeolus Quartet has been widely recognized for their highly creative and engaging educational programs. They received an Educator Award presented by the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association, and the John Lad Prize. They have served as teaching faculty at Interlochen, Stanford University’s education program for gifted youth, and have reached over 18,000 students in metro Detroit alone through residencies with Chamber Music Detroit.

The Quartet’s numerous honors include First Prize at the Coleman International Chamber Ensemble Competition, as well as Grand Prize at both the Plowman Chamber Music Competition and the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition.

Aeolus Quartet

NERMIS MIESES These performances mark Nermis Mieses’s first Chamber Music Detroit appearances.

Nermis Mieses serves as Associate Professor of Oboe at Michigan State University and is a versatile performer who enjoys bringing to life oboe literature from the baroque to the 21st century. She has earned top prizes at the prestigious Barbirolli International Oboe Competition, the First International Oboe Competition in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and the Matthew Ruggiero International Woodwind Competition. As a recitalist, she is frequently featured on university and conservatory stages across the country, and champions the challenging repertoire from the iconic French oboe composer, Gilles Silvestrini, as well as music from underrepresented composers.

Also dedicated to ensemble playing, Nermis Mieses was Principal Oboe of the Michigan Opera Theatre and has frequently performed with such orchestras as the Ann Arbor Symphony, Sphinx, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic and the Michigan Philharmonic, and Nermis Mieses has concertized

internationally in Latin America and Europe.

ADAM UNSWORTH This performances mark Adam Unsworth’s first Chamber Music Detroit appearances.

Adam Unsworth is Professor of Horn at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Previously he was a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He has toured Asia and Europe with the San Francisco Symphony and is a frequent guest with the Detroit Symphony.

Currently he serves as Principal Horn of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Bay Area horn quartet, Quadre. He has appeared as a recitalist at many universities across the United States, as well as at Carnegie’s Weill Hall.

Adam has five critically acclaimed recordings as a leader to his credit. He is also a member of the New York based Gil Evans Centennial Project, which has received two Grammy nominations for its recordings, as well as a Jazz Journalist Association Award. He is also part of Japanese big band leader Miho Hazama’s M-Unit Band, appearing on her two most recent Grammy nominated recordings.

He has been as guest musician with new music ensembles Alarm Will Sound, the Meridian Arts Ensemble, Ensemble Signal, Ensemble Linea, and the Slee Sinfonietta.

Adam Unsworth

DANA KELLEY This concert marks Dana Kelley’s third Chamber Music Detroit appearance. She has also appeared in Chamber Music Detroit performances by the Argus and Harlem string quartets.

Dana’s performance schedule has brought her to such prestigious venues and festivals as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Recital Hall at New York’s Kaufman Center for the Performing Arts, the Ravinia Festival, and Bravo! Vail. She has collaborated with Ralph Kirshbaum, Nobuko Imai and Miriam Fried, pianists Leon Fleisher, Anne-Marie MacDermott and Misha Dichter, and Astrid Schween of the Juilliard String Quartet, among others.

Violist Dana Kelley is an Artistic Director and member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. She has been a top prizewinner in the Sphinx Music Competition, the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition and the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. She also serves on the viola faculty of the Mannes School of Music at the New School.

She is the subject of the documentary by Oscar-winning director Allan Miller, titled PLAYING WITH FIRE: Jeannette Sorrell and the Mysteries of Conducting (commercially released in 2023).

Sorrell studied conducting at the Aspen and the Tanglewood music festivals under Leonard Bernstein and Roger Norrington and harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam. She won First Prize in the Spivey International Harpsichord Competition, competing against over 70 harpsichordists from four continents.

GENERAL PATRON INFORMATION Chamber Music Detroit will publish three program guides for all concerts during the 2022-2023 season. Program notes will be inserted into the programs this year instead of being in the book.

Patrons may turn in their programs at exit doors at the end of each concert, or take them home and bring them back for any remaining concerts they plan to attend that are included in that book.

Ticket Policies & Seating • Tickets Sales: Tickets for all CMDetroit concerts may be purchased by phone at 313335-3300 or online at www.CMDetroit.org.

Tickets are available online on concert days up to two hours prior to performance. At Seligman PAC, most seats are reserved, with a general admission section in Rows P through T. At all other venues, seating is general admission.

General admission seats may be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

• Lost or Misplaced tickets: Can’t find your concert tickets? Call the Ticket Office at 313335-3300 and we will have duplicate tickets waiting for you free of charge at the Box Office.

• Tax Credit Donations: Subscribers and single ticket buyers may call 313-335-3300 up until two hours before a concert if they are unable to attend a concert and wish to donate their ticket(s) back for a tax credit.

• Ticket Exchanges: Subscribers may also call 313-335-3300 in advance of concert night to exchange tickets for another concert on any 2022-2023 CMD series, subject to availability.

In some cases, upgrade fees may apply, depending on seat location.

• Digital Access: All concerts this season will be live-streamed and the digital recording is available for viewing for ten days following each concert, free of charge to subscribers.

• Student and Senior Tickets: Seniors may purchase tickets at all venues for $5 off adult prices. Student/youth tickets are 50% off for Seligman concerts and $10 at all other venues.

• Ticket Refunds: Due to the nature of live events, artists and programs are subject to change without notice. Refunds are given only in

the case of event cancellation. Handling fees are not refundable. All ticket sales are final.

• Will Call: Ticket orders received less than 10 days prior to the performance will be held at Will Call, which opens one hour prior to concert.

Children • Please use discretion in bringing children to performances, particularly children under five years of age. As a courtesy to others, parents or guardians may be asked to remove children creating a disturbance during the performance.

• All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket to enter the theater.

Electronic Devices • Please turn off all cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices prior to the performance.

• The taking of photographs and the use of recording equipment is not permitted during any performance.

• Patrons expecting emergency calls are encouraged to leave pagers or cell phones and seat locations with the Box Office.

• Please do not text during performances.

Late Seating Latecomers will be admitted to the back of the hall (accessible by stairs or, at Seligman, by elevator). Patrons are asked to stand until a movement is over and then take a seat in the back of the hall until the end of the piece. At that time, Seligman patrons will be seated in their purchased seats, and patrons may move to any unoccupied seat at all other venues. On very rare occasions, an artist will request that there be no late seating. In those cases, the artist’s wishes will be honored and patrons may take their seats after intermission. Patrons who need to leave any performance will be readmitted at an appropriate break.
