Remedy West 2019 Program

Welcome to

REMEDY Yahoo! Thank you for opting out of other engagements and activities and choosing instead to invest this weekend at REMEDY WEST. You will be glad you did! We designed REMEDY WEST with you in mind. We invited the best speakers, experienced and passionate servants of Christ who have made missional living the central theme of their lives. Once you get to know them, you will want to imitate what they have done and what they are doing. In a world deficient of worthy heroes, they will be your heroes like none other. Watch and listen closely to these heroes of the faith! At Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA), we aim to motivate, educate and equip healthcare students and practicing professionals to glorify God in all we do. We believe Christian healthcare professionals have the best opportunity to influence people for the kingdom of God, both here in the U.S. and around the world. We want to thank Dr. Chuck Sands and California Baptist University (CBU) for joining with us, not just in allowing us to hold this event on their campus, but also in agreeing to co-sponsor REMEDY WEST. They invested heavily with us so we can make student registration fees more reasonable. CBU is committed to similar kingdom purposes and outcomes, making it an easy decision to sponsor this conference with us. Just a word about the logo for REMEDY WEST, designed by Jason Stevens. The circular symbol is from the fourth century AD Greek letters Chi (χ) Rho (ρ), which early Roman Christians placed on tombs and in prominent places to identify themselves as followers of Christ, their King and Savior. This combined symbol also bears some resemblance to Rx, which is from the ancient Latin word for “recipe” meaning “to take,” which long predates its current meaning most often attached to food. Healthcare professionals prescribe medicines and/or procedures as the healing remedy for physical, mental or emotional illness. We believe Jesus Christ is the remedy that offers ultimate healing to all people everywhere in order to forgive our sins and heal our broken relationships with God, the one who created the world and everyone in it. Jeremiah declared, “Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise” (Jeremiah 17:14, NIV 1984). During this conference, we pray you will listen for the voice of the LORD and respond eagerly and willingly to what you hear from Him. We pray you will follow Jesus’ example and words to His disciples: “Tell everyone about the Kingdom of God, and heal the sick” (Luke 9:2, paraphrase). Yours is an incredible and unique privilege with the capacity to heal, teach and offer spiritual reconciliation with God, all in one encounter, just as Jesus did. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey with Jesus or in healthcare, we pray God will use what you discover and experience here at REMEDY WEST to help you prepare for your future mission in healthcare, here in the U.S. or somewhere around the globe, all to the glory of God. Fanning the flame until He comes for us,

Mike Chupp, MD Chief Executive Officer

Michael McLaughlin, MDiv Western Regional Director

W

e’ve gathered here this weekend because we each share a deep passion to save the world for Christ.

Through medical missions, God is bringing His REMEDY for disease to the world. And because of the skills He gives us, God is using each one of us to bring His REMEDY to a world that is riddled with disease and sin. This conference will tell you what it takes to serve Christ on the mission field—whether that’s at home in your local community, in a third-world country for a long-term career or somewhere in between. So get ready for REMEDY, and be prepared for God to open your heart to His calling and His passion for your life.

SATURDAY 14

Remedy West 2019

Plenary Session 1 Saturday, October 5 • 9 a.m. • Innovator Hall

Rick Donlon, MD Rick Donlon grew up in New Orleans and graduated from Texas Christian University in 1986. He completed medical school at LSU-N.O., and a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. In 1995, he and three medical school classmates opened a primary care health center for the poor in Memphis’ most medically underserved neighborhood. The work eventually grew to include eight health centers, three dental clinics and a family medicine residency program—providing over 160,000 patient visits in 2013. Many of the medical and dental professionals, including Dr. Donlon, moved into the underserved communities where they work. Over the last decade they’ve sent long-term medical missionaries to Central and South Asia and the Horn of Africa. In 2014, Dr. Donlon and 20 other physicians and mid-level providers left their original organization to found Resurrection Health, continuing their vision of community-based, Christ-centered primary and hospital care for the least served—in Memphis and around the world. Dr. Donlon, his wife Laurie and their seven children live in the Binghampton neighborhood.

Infinity War and End Game (Christian Missions in the Third Millennium) Tectonic cultural and political shifts are dramatically altering missionary strategies and tactics, both at home and abroad. As the eternal struggle moves to its endgame, an important role remains for Christian healthcare disciples.

1

Discovering Your Vocational Calling: Pearls and Pitfalls Jack Tsai, MD Business Building 250

Session Information As a medical student, Dr. Jack Tsai was happily on his way to obtaining the American Dream...until he took seriously Jesus’ command to deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Him. This is the story of how following Jesus in medicine took him into ministry, seminary and healthcare for the poor. Come explore the ways in which God directs our paths, and what ultimately is more important than figuring out your vocational calling.

Cross-cultural Competency: Understanding and Working with Arabs and Middle Easterners Naji Abi-Hashem, PhD Business Building 253

Session Information Cultures are mixing more than ever in our world today. The waves of migration and the influx of displaced refugees are increasing everywhere. People from various countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are becoming visible and well established in the broader and regional West. Practitioners, providers and helping-professionals are in greater need to better understand these populations and gain practical skills to effectively work with them. Yet, there is a lot of confusion and anxiety about who are the Arabs, Muslims and Middle Easterners? How large and diverse is that population in North America? This workshop will focus on understanding their backgrounds, mentalities, psychological needs, religious cultures, social challenges (both the ones they face and represent), adaptation-assimilation struggles and civil contributions. We will correct some misconceptions about Arabs/Middle Easterners and highlight some of their cultural dynamics, mental-emotional functioning, communication styles, social values and generational differences. We will provide some practical guidelines and therapeutic tools on how to best work with them in a caring and effective way.

5

Human Trafficking and Healthcare Professionals Gloria Halverson, MD Business Building 202

Session Information This workshop will address the magnitude of the problem of human trafficking and discuss the importance of the role of healthcare professionals. We will look at the health needs of trafficking victims, how to identify trafficking victims and what to do when they present to you for care.

6

The Myth of Moral Neutrality John Patrick, MD Business Building 203

Session Information Dr. Patrick’s objective is for all of us to be better able to bear witness to what the Lord has done, often not what we wanted to be done. Morally neutral teaching does not exist because we all use the word “ought” when we teach clinical medicine. Students ask what they ought to do? But ought does not exist in a world of materialistic naturalism. The objectives of this session are to understand the power of sharp questions, understand the denial of the problem of the origin of ethics, help children come into this world with moral knowledge and to argue effectively to rights of conscience.

Healthcare Education as a Domestic Mission Field Steve Baker, MD; Sega Cissoko, MD; and Roger Joe, DDS Business Building 204

1 Hour CE

Session Information

This workshop will present opportunities and experiences using healthcare education as a domestic mission field to not only reach patients, but also to reach students and colleagues for the Lord. Each speaker has personal experience in their area of service. Training Primary Care Physicians in a Community Hospital Program and in a Church Healthcare Clinic – Steve Baker, MD Dr. Baker started a healthcare clinic at his church while also serving as a faculty member in a community hospital family medicine training program. Working with students and residents in both settings, he has had opportunities to also provide mission experiences for them in Indonesia. He will share his experience in both settings. Using Healthcare Education in a University Medical School Setting – Sega Cissoko, MD Dr. Cissoko is on the faculty of a medical school, but prior to this was a fulltime missionary in West Africa for 20 years. He will discuss opportunities to work with medical students and colleagues in an academic center. Using Dental Education as an Outreach to Dental Students, Residents and Patients – Roger Joe, DMD Dr. Joe will discuss the importance of using dental education and opportunities to mentor and train dental students, dental hygienists and assistants, as well as doing short-term dental missions. Objectives 1. Discuss the importance of leadership and mentoring when working with healthcare students and postgraduate trainees. 2. Utilize a domestic healthcare setting in private practice or academic setting to care for the underserved in a caring way.

8

The Vowels of Medical Missionary Mentoring: A,E,I,O,U and Sometimes Why? Mike Chupp, MD Business Building Auditorium

Session Information

Despite the recognition that the best mentoring experience is the result of an intentional and committed relationship between mentor and mentee, there remains confusion over what a good mentor does to ensure the best possible outcome for the mentee. There are also a significant number of challenges in the life of a healthcare missionary that compromise best practices in mentoring. This talk will focus on the essential commitments of both mentor and mentee to maximize the successful integration of new cross-cultural workers, no matter the service location or working environment. #Remedy2019

Discovering Your Vocational Calling: Pearls and Pitfalls (Repeat) Jack Tsai, MD Business Building 250

1 Hour CE

Integrating Faith into Medical Practice Michael Parsa, MD Business Building 251

Session Information Our patients come to us with emotional, spiritual, intellectual and physical needs. Best practice requires us to address all four quadrants. Many (most?) healthcare professionals (HCPs) practice reductionistic medicine after the model of their training. Many HCPs have received no training how to broach the spiritual component or needs of our patients. So what should it look? What can we do? This workshop will provide us with simple steps we can take to move like fully integrating our faith into practice regardless of specialty. Objectives 1. Define a comprehensive model of healthcare, including spiritual care. 2. Define true health. 3. Discuss how complete medical care must include addressing more than the patient’s physical complaints.

3

God’s Surprising Questions Nancy Congdon Business Building 252

Session Information Asking good questions is a critical part of our task as health caregivers. The wise question leads to the correct remedy. Scripture records for us challenging, insightful, probing questions from our loving Father. Surprisingly, God asks apparently obvious questions to ordinary people, opening the door for deeper fellowship with Him. This talk will be a practical consideration of those questions from the experience of an ordinary missionary. #Remedy2019

4

Purpose Driven Practice: Preparing and Enjoying Significance in Your Practice Roger Joe, DDS Business Building 253

Session Information Bob Buford’s Half Time speaks on moving from success to significance. We all desire this, so how do we find significance and develop a missional vision in our pursuit to honor Christ with our lives? Join Dr. Roger Joe and Dr. Thomas Lee (founder of His Hands on Africa) as we share some biblical insights and personal stories aimed to help you find your passion and significance in God’s kingdom.

5

How to Prevent Burnout Paul Liu, MD Business Building 202

Session Information Burnout is hitting the medical profession earlier and earlier. A good percentage of medical students and residents suffer from some degree of burnout. Paul will discuss how he has battled this issue and how after working in a high stress environment for more than half his life, he still enjoys going to work each day and seeing what God is going to do.

6

Relativism: Where We Are, How Did We Get Here and A Bit of Essential History John Patrick, MD Business Building 203

Session Information Reductionism and relativism are like Siamese twins. Their history goes back to Protagorus, but in the West they find their origin in the 13th and 14th centuries. The objectives are this session are to be able to tell the story convincingly, to know the strengths and weaknesses of reductionism, especially where it morphs into scientism, and to know the weak points in the lives of modern students and their need for certainty and trust.

Healthcare Education as a Mission Field in a Global Setting Mike Chupp, MD; Robert Congdon, MD; and Rebecca Thompson, RN Business Building 204

1 Hour CE

Session Information

This workshop will discuss using healthcare education in a global mission setting. Each of the speakers have a unique personal experience serving in a long-term mission setting. Training and Discipling Postgraduate Physicians to Serve in Mission or Secular Hospital Settings – Mike Chupp, MD Dr. Chupp served in a mission hospital (Tenwek) as a surgeon, educator and hospital director for 20 years. He will share his experience of training interns and surgical residents in a mission hospital setting and why he thinks it is important. Using Education to Train Local Non-physician Healthcare Workers – Robert Congdon, MD Dr. Congdon has served in a variety of mission settings in Africa over the last 30 years. He will discuss his experience in training non-physician healthcare workers in a small health center in South Sudan. Teaching in Nursing Schools and Starting New Nursing Schools in Mission Hospital Settings to Improve Healthcare – Rebecca Thompson, RN Becki Thompson has served in two different mission hospital settings over the last 35 years and has started nursing training programs in both. She will share her experience in doing nursing education cross-culturally and the special need for training national nurses to work in mission hospitals. Objectives 1. Discuss the need for training healthcare workers at all levels to improve healthcare in an international setting especially in low- and middle-income countries. 2. Discuss elements of education that need to be stressed and used in a global setting.

Plenary Session 2 Saturday, October 5 • 2:30 p.m. • Innovator Hall

Joshua Bogunjoko, MD Dr. Joshua Bogunjoko began a five-year term as the International Director of SIM in June 2013. Joshua’s life in Christ began during high school. He surrendered to the Lord’s direction to study medicine, and he graduated and completed his residency in family medicine at a mission hospital in Jos, Nigeria. He later served at the SIM Hospital in Galmi, Niger, with his wife, Dr. Joanna Bogunjoko, eventually becoming both the Chief Medical Officer and hospital director.

What is the Connection between Medical Skill, Medical Mission and the Least of These? Using the story of the building of the Tabernacle and God’s specific instructions to Moses in Exodus 31:1-11, we will examine the unique place of medicine and medical mission in God’s project of reaching the nations in 21st century mission. Connecting this with the unique ability of medical mission to touch lives in ways that are not quite possible for many other professions, and with the background of the healing of the woman with hemorrhage in Mark 5:21-34, we will examine medicine’s power of empathy and ability to connect with people, especially those in difficult places and hard circumstances. We will look at abilities of those who see and deploy this skill as God’s gift for His purpose to impact individuals, households and societies, including its social, spiritual, economic and relational impact. In short, we will examine the ability of medicine to touch and transform the realities of “the least of these” wherever they are found.

Plenary Session 3 Sunday, October 6 • 9 a.m. • Innovator Hall

Rob Congdon, MD Rob Congdon, MD, has served in a variety of capacities as a physician and surgeon as family medical faculty at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya; in a wholistic health ministry in Doro, South Sudan at Mabaan County Hospital with SIM; and with Samaritan’s Purse at Mabaan County Hospital doing clinical medicine, surgery and tropical medicine. Presently he and Nancy serve with African Mission Healthcare and are based in Roseburg, Oregon, though they are home only intermittently as they still serve the people they love in Africa.

Inadequate Man, Unstoppable Gospel: Life and Medicine in Africa Dr. Rob and Nancy Congdon followed God’s leading to South Central Africa, then spent a memorable decade in South Sudan. Rob will share something of their family’s life in Africa, as well as the lessons the Lord has impressed upon them. In this session, you will get a renewed perspective of the gospel and encouragement that God is at work in and through our own inadequacy.

1

God’s Surprising Questions (Repeat) Nancy Congdon Business Building 250

Session Information

Asking good questions is a critical part of our task as health caregivers.

2

Missionary Prayer Tool Kit: Developing Prayer Teams Before You Go on the Mission Field Ineke Glover, PA-C Business Building 251

Session Information Prayer: Why? How? Who? When? Prayer should be paramount in your missionary career. Learn some practical tools on how to develop and train a sending prayer team. Learn some tips on how to prioritize your own prayer time. Hear examples of how to transparently communicate your needs and your ministry needs without sounding like an Eeyore or breaching confidentiality. Ineke will give examples of how to develop and practice listening prayer.

3

Are You Interested in Local Missions? Brick A. Lantz, MD, and George Gonzalez, MD Business Building 252

How to Recover From Major Adverse Events Paul Liu, MD Business Building 253

Session Information Have you ever been fired from your job? Paul had worked at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for more than 30 years and developed a large Christian medical ministry in Phoenix, Arizona until he was fired over “contract issues.” Listen to his story about how God’s providence took him through those tough times.

5

Christian Justice in Healthcare Rick Donlon, MD Business Building 202

Session Information Jesus’ kingdom is founded on righteousness and justice (Psalm 89:14). For 2,000 years, the Christian movement has transformed cultures by selflessly caring for the most vulnerable. Because healthcare in the U.S. and abroad remains structurally unjust (unfair), Christian disciples have unprecedented opportunities to demonstrate the justice of our Great King.

6

The Four Levels of Happiness John Patrick, MD Business Building 203

Session Information For Dr. Patrick, this is the most effective way he knows of opening up the gaping holes in most people’s lives and showing the relevance of the gospel. The objectives of this session are to recognize the role of unrecognized personal guilt at the heart of most visits to the family physician and others, to be able to say we are all a mess and to know that guilt is real but we have forgotten how to repent, despite the fact that all ancient religions knew that it was serious.

Why Consider Healthcare Education as a Mission Field? James D. Smith, MD, and David Thompson, MD Business Building 204

Session Information

This workshop will present the needs, opportunities and rewards for using healthcare education to serve the Lord in missions globally, both in long-term and short-term settings. Teaching as a Mission Field – James D. Smith, MD Dr. Smith will discuss the importance of healthcare education as an opportunity to serve in missions using Jesus as an example of the ultimate teacher. Needs, opportunities, preparation and cultural considerations will be discussed. My Journey Using Surgical Education to Serve the Lord – David Thompson, MD Dr. Thompson will tell his very personal study of how the Lord called him to full-time missions and gave him the vision for using surgical education to start the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons.

8

Making Tough Choices: From Medical Student to Medical Missions Michael Parsa, MD Business Building Auditorium

1 Hour CE

Session Information This session will address how choices made during medical, pharmacy, dental, nursing, physician assistant, etc. school often shape the direction of our lives. Dr. Parsa will outline the barriers and obstacles that often derail a student or a doctor eager to serve the least of these in the US or in developing countries. He will provide illustrations from his own life and the lives of others as good examples that will challenge and encourage students and healthcare professionals to focus on opportunities where the needs are the greatest. Objectives 1. Discuss investing where the medical and spiritual needs are the greatest. 2. Describe the positive impact on both patients and the healthcare professionals when investing where the needs are the greatest.

Cross-cultural Competency: Understanding and Working with Arabs and Middle Easterners (Repeat) Naji Abi-Hashem, PhD Business Building 253

Session Information

Cultures are mixing more than ever in our world today.

5

How Short-term GHO Medical Missions Make a Long-term Impact (Repeat) Bill Reichart, MDiv Business Building 202

Session Information Learn about short-term medical mission opportunities with CMDA’s Global Health Outreach and how these strategic trips not only make an indelible and sustainable impact on those served but also those going and serving. Come and learn about these serving opportunities.

6

Why Development Does Not Work John Patrick, MD Business Building 203

Session Information This was a hard lesson for Dr. Patrick because he spent years working on the care of malnourished children and was rewarded in being part of the group that wrote the definitive protocols. Africa taught him that not all stories of meaning open up the world in the same way. The objectives of this session are to understand that experimental science does not arise de novo, to understand that fatalism is deep in Eastern religion and in animism, to understand that the post modern nihilist has the same problem and to learn the first steps in unpacking this problem.

Ethical Dilemmas in Global Healthcare Settings James D. Smith, MD Business Building 204

1 Hour CE

Session Information This session will present a template for analyzing educational and medical ethical issues in a global setting. We will then present two to three scenarios from real-life situations and have the participants divide into small groups and discuss them using the template provided. We will then meet back and discuss the conclusions reached by each group. Objectives 1. Define ethical principles for clinical practice domestically and in a global setting. 2. Use a template to analyzing educational and medical ethical issues in a global setting for representative scenarios.

8

The Future of Medical Missions Joshua Bogunjoko, MD Business Building Auditorium

Session Information Is God done with medical missions? Does the world still need medical missionaries? Where are medical missions headed? In this workshop, we will consider the question, “Why medical missions? We will also examine the historical impact of, and current realities in, medical missions. We will look at the importance of medical missions in the overall global mission. We will consider examples of what medical missions has been and what it is likely to be in the future, including some of its impacts.

“The opportunities to serve in underserved settings have forced me to encounter realities that differ from those I am familiar with. Suffering and injustice are more than headlines in a newspaper or a 30-second clip on the nightly news. There is something in our hearts that is profoundly affected when we move past acknowledging suffering and injustices as true and come to a genuine understanding that they are real.

Plenary Session 4 Sunday, October 6 • 2:30 p.m. • Innovator Hall

Mike Chupp, MD Dr. Chupp received his medical degree from Indiana University in 1988, and he then completed a general surgery residency in 1993. For 20 years, he served as a healthcare missionary at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya. He wore several leadership hats while in Kenya. In 2015, Dr. Chupp joined CMDA as Executive Vice President. In September 2019, he began serving as CEO of CMDA.

Action in Hope: Across the Street and Around the World Our postmodern culture has abandoned notions of abiding and universal truth and embraced autonomy and tolerance. Finding any reason to hope is problematic for those who increasingly find faith irrelevant at best and the enemy often. The authentic disciple of Jesus Christ in healthcare “overflows with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13) and counters the despair of the world in which he or she lives. Such hope produces actions that are self-sacrificing and motivated by Christ’s compassion, whether or not the Christ follower is serving in their own community or as an alien and stranger in a foreign culture in a land far away.

Agape Unlimited agapeunlimited.org

How do you define health? Is it simply the absence of disease or is it something more? Within Agape, we believe health to be something more—that to be truly healthy, we must not only nurture and care for the physical, but also for the mental, the social and the spiritual aspects of those we serve. Focusing on the former Soviet Union since 1993, AGAPE seeks to promote all aspects of health and to show God’s AGAPE love by providing medical assistance to those who have little or no access to medical care. Agape always partners with like-minded local healthcare providers and churches. In this way, the work continues after we leave. The inevitable question always comes up, “Why do you do this?” When people ask, this is the perfect opportunity to tell them about God’s greatest gift, Jesus Christ, and because we have demonstrated God’s AGAPE love through medical care, they listen and often want to know more.

Medical Ambassadors International medicalambassadors.org

Medical Ambassadors International (MAI) mission is equipping communities through Christ-centered health and development. In 1975, as South Vietnam was falling, a man name Dr. Raymond Benson was on the last airlift from the roof of the American Embassy. Dr. Benson’s vision was for Christian medical professionals to establish clinics around the world. His hope was to heal people both physically and spiritually. Out of that desire, Medical Ambassadors was formed. While Dr. Benson was correct in his assessment of the physical and spiritual needs of people around the world, he did not anticipate that the same people would keep coming back to the clinic with the same preventable illnesses. It became clear that this clinic-based model was not sustainable. In fact, we were creating a culture of dependency within the communities we were trying to help. In light of this, Medical Ambassadors transitioned to a new model. Instead of going into a community and giving free care, we entered bringing only questions. Instead of giving the communities what we thought they needed, we asked local leaders, “What do you need to be happy and healthy?” We let their answers guide our focus and started developing lessons on those topics. In time, the available lessons included far more than only health topics. Depending on what the local leaders determined their communities needed, there were teachings on how to work together and solve problems, teachings on agriculture, literacy, family relationships, micro-enterprise, coping with disability and more.
