hen asked about his memories of Investors Title’s early days in 1972, J. Allen Fine will describe being one of only four employees, underwriting the first policy himself, and producing documents using the highly sophisticated-at-the-time electronic typewriter. briefly and then returned to start his business. Chapel Hill and the surrounding community continue to be closely tied to the company’s brand, with the downtown headquarters providing an ideal location for social and networking events centered on UNC sports. In the early 70s, title insurance had been around for more than 100 years, and the secondary mortgage market had been in existence since 1938. Because lender title insurance covers risks related to the lender’s lien on the insured property, Allen, in anticipation of growth in both the local real estate market and the sale of loans on the secondary mortgage market, saw the value and potential of the product.
“I was convinced that lenders would begin to sell loans in the secondary market,” Allen said, “…and there’d be demand for some kind of protection on those loans.” Allen foresaw opportunity and raised initial capital of $736,000 to establish Investors Title Insurance Company, the first of many subsidiaries and divisions that comprise the Investors Title brand today, including Investors Title Exchange Company, National Investors Title Insurance Company, University Title Company, and the company’s Commercial Services Division (Nasdaq: ITIC).
