The Membership Directory remains a valuable resource for area businesses, residents, and visitors in making connections. It is a primary goal of the Chamber to help connect people and organizations to meet your needs and strengthen our communities. The Chamber of Commerce is a private non-profit organization with hundreds of area organizations as members. We offer a number of benefit programs including group buying power on insurance and energy, workforce development initiatives, informational seminars, access to elected officials, and advocacy. But one of the most powerful benefits has always been making connections. The world is noisy. We are bombarded daily with information from a variety of sources â&#x20AC;&#x201C; television, print, internet, radio, etc. Our smartphones alone provide enough to keep our heads spinning. While sources of information are seemingly endless, the Chamber is a trusted resource in cutting through the noise. Residents contact us when they are looking for products and services. Visitors stop into our offices looking for places to eat and things to experience while in our area. Businesses rely on us to provide information and resources to keep them competitive. We take pride in helping anyone connect with what they are seeking. This Directory is just one way that we make those connections. Members have the opportunity to connect face to face at events held each month at various locations. area INFORMATION Columbia and Montour counties have long been recognized as one distinct social and economic region. In fact, the land area of Montour County was part of Columbia County until 1850 when the county seat relocated to Bloomsburg and Montour became the smallest county in the Commonwealth. Located in the heart of Pennsylvania, the area oďŹ&#x20AC;ers vibrant communities surrounded by relaxed, rural and rustic settings. Both counties feature ample shopping, dining, year-round recreational and cultural opportunities for residents and visitors. For those who occasionally crave the glow of big city lights, major metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia and New York City are only a few hours away. Renaissance Jamboree, Downtown Bloomsburg

Danville-Riverside Bridge

History: The discovery of iron ore combined with the advent of the railroad accelerated development in the two counties in the mid-1800s. Iron works flourished and the local mills were the first to manufacture T-rails, used across the country in constructing the nation’s rail industry. At the turn of the century, when the iron ore supply was depleted new types of manufacturing began to flourish. Due to its proximity to the Susquehanna River and railroad system, textile mills such as the Magee Carpet Company (now known as Autoneum North America) became established in the area and remain today. While the Susquehanna River and the railroad have given way to more modern means of commerce, major highways like Route 11 and Interstate 80 provide direct access to other business centers across the state and beyond. The service industry is also strong in the area, with Geisinger and Bloomsburg University being two of the area’s top employers. Much of the area’s past is still visible in the historic and downtown business districts of the two counties. The Chamber of Commerce and other business groups recognize that attractive and dynamic downtowns are linked to the vitality of our communities. The ongoing preservation and rehabilitation efforts of these 19th and early 20th century structures have made local downtowns premiere attractions.

Strong Communities: Residents and businesses in Columbia and Montour counties appreciate the area’s high quality of life and take an active role in preserving and improving it. Despite a modest population, volunteer eﬀorts and generous contributions have a signiﬁcant impact on the opportunities and services www.ColumbiaMontourChamber.com | 7

AREA INFORMATION available to everyone in the community. Examples of these collaborative efforts are visible in the area’s attractive parks and other recreational facilities, cultural activities and human service agencies. The downtowns reveal the historic centers of many of these communities. Throughout Columbia and Montour counties, revitalization efforts supported by the Chamber include: • Preserving traditional main streets as other retail areas expand. • Supporting annual festivals designed to draw people to the downtowns and expose them to unique shops, restaurants and other businesses. • Improving the physical appearances of storefronts, sidewalks and streets, addressing parking concerns and working with property owners to fill vacant storefronts. Dedicated involvement of business owners, community leaders, local government and residents is crucial to the success of these initiatives.

Shopping: Each county’s downtown business district features professional services, specialty shops and a variety of dining establishments. In addition to the downtowns, shopping centers featuring today’s major retailers are located just oﬀ Interstate 80 in Buckhorn and along Route 11 from Berwick to Danville. Education: Quality educational opportunities exist for every age; from preschool aged children just beginning their studies to adults seeking to further their education. • Seven school districts cover primary and secondary education. • The Columbia-Montour Area Vocational Technical School provides additional specialized opportunities for students in grades 9-12. • Several private and parochial schools offer supplemental assistance and full-time alternatives. • Bloomsburg University, located in the Town of Bloomsburg, offers 56 undergraduate degree programs, 58 undergraduate minors and 20 graduate programs, including a doctorate in audiology and in nursing practice and certificate programs in seven areas. The Office of Extended Programs also provides continuing education and skill specialization courses. • Geisinger Medical Center is a teaching hospital affiliated with seven degree-granting institutions to prepare aspiring nurses. • Luzerne County Community College offers college courses at their satellite campus in the Berwick Eagles Building.

Health Care: The health care needs of residents are well met by three hospitals and additional support services. • Berwick Hospital Center – Oﬀering emergency, intensive and outpatient services with 101 acute care and 240 long term care beds. • Geisinger – The nation’s largest rural health services organization serves more than 3 million residents throughout 45 counties in central, south-central and northeastern Pennsylvania, and also in southern New Jersey at AtlantiCare. In 2017, the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital became the newest members of the Geisinger Family. • Geisinger Medical Center – A tertiary and quaternary facility with 594-beds including a Level I Trauma Center, Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, the Hospital for Advanced Medicine, a sevenhelicopter Life Flight® program and clinical research facilities. • A variety of specialized human services agencies oﬀer counseling and assistance for a full range of individual and family situations.

Arts & Entertainment: Columbia and Montour counties cater to even the most eclectic tastes in arts and entertainment. Festivals throughout the year celebrate everything from area history to volunteer fire departments. The region also boasts live theatre, art galleries and concerts; all contributing to the area’s cultural diversity. • Covered Bridge and Arts Festival – Celebrating its 37th year at Knoebels Amusement Resort, this festival features more than 400 vendors, tours of the area’s covered bridges and live music. • Bloomsburg Fair – Drawing hundreds of thousands of people to the area each fall, the Fair features exhibits, crafts, family entertainment and plenty of unique foods. • RiverFest – Held each fall in Berwick, this festival celebrates Test Track Park’s beauty while featuring area vendors, crafters, non-profit organizations and various activities. • The Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University – offers a full season of performances spanning a wide-range of genres. • Spring festivals occur throughout the region to celebrate the attributes each town and borough has to offer, including Renaissance Jamboree, (Bloomsburg) Spring Fling (Danville) and Celebrate Berwick. • Summer concerts are held regularly in area parks and offer additional opportunities for people to gather and enjoy free entertainment. • Various mediums of art are featured at the Artspace Gallery and The Exchange in downtown Bloomsburg. • Live performances are viewed throughout the year at the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble.

Recreation: From well-manicured parks to unspoiled nature areas, outdoor enthusiasts can fish, boat, bike, camp, golf plus more within the two counties. Communities take pride and care in their town parks by offering picnicking, tennis and basketball courts, swimming, playgrounds and other activities. Areas such as the Montour Preserve and the Weiser State Forest allow residents to get in touch with nature minutes from home. Ricketts Glen, located in the Benton area, is a state park best known for its 22-named waterfalls with corresponding hiking trails. The park also offers fishing, swimming, camping, cross country skiing and many other activities. The Susquehanna River’s North Branch winds through the two counties, providing fishing and boating opportunities with several maintained public access points. Those who like to hit the links will enjoy four public and two private golf courses located within the two counties.

Chamber of Commerce: The Columbia Montour Chamber of Commerce is proud to serve the businesses and communities of the area. The Chamber was formed in 1941 as a small collection of business people interested in expanding trade and attracting jobs within the area. The founders understood that by working together, they could accomplish what none could do individually. Through the support of its more than 400 members, many volunteers and a professional staﬀ, the organization possesses a long history of involvement in the substantial activities within the area it serves. The Chamber not only works to foster and promote activities that enhance the business climate, but also supports endeavors which preserve and improve the quality of life for area residents. This area continues to provide a diverse and progressive business community, quality education, recreational opportunities and dedicated communities.
