WRITING a Will may be something you've been thinking about for many years. The reasons for having a Will are many, but, if for no other reason, a Will makes life a lot easier for those you leave behind at a time of sorrow. If you die without a Will (Intestate), your family has to sort out many administrative items and are obliged to the decisions made by law as to who inherits what, decisions you should have really made by writing a Will.
SO, why do many people put off the task of writing a Will?
2. "I'VE GOT NOTHING TO LEAVE": Everybody leaves something. It may not be much, but, surely, that's even more reason to make sure it goes to those you care about? Also, it is not just making sure your worldly goods go to the right

AS to when you should write a Will, the answer is NOW. There may be plenty of life in you yet, but accidents and illness have absolutely no respect for age. Also, bear in mind that a modern Will is written in such a way that it shouldn't need much changing, so it's not something you have to think about often, but only in the event of a major change in circumstances, such as marriage, birth of a first child or divorce.

Theatre secrets revealed FOR some years, speakers from the Newcastle Players have been giving talks to groups throughout North Staffordshire and South Cheshire about what goes on behind the scenes in the amateur theatre. Now, one of the team involved has published an expanded version of the talk in a book, called 'A Word in On Plays'. Said the author, Geoff Price: "The title is obviously a play on words, and that sets the tone for both our talk and book. "We take a light-hearted look at what goes on behind the proscenium arch and in the amateur theatre, in general: why we do it, how we do it and, to some extent, where we do it. In fact, you could say that we take the lid off the world of amateur theatre. "It all began as a ten-minute talk to a Rotary Club. We were, then, asked to give it to other groups, such as Women's Institutes, Probus Clubs, Townswomen's Guilds and so on. "They usually wanted a talk, lasting 45 minutes, so it was expanded. However, we soon found that even that length was not enough to cover everything we wanted to say. That's why I eventually wrote the book." The 142-page book, which contains a wealth of illustrations and amusing anecdotes, answers many of the questions put to those involved in the amateur theatre, such as:
* "How do you learn all the words?"
* "What beautiful furniture (or costumes). Where do you get it (or them) from?" However, it's not long before there's friction between the Hollywood bigshots and the locals. Former 'Hollyoaks' star, Glen Wallace (who was nominated for 'Best Actor' in the 2010 British Soap Awards for his portrayal of Malachy Fisher), will be joined on-stage by Colin Connor ('Tull', 'Of Mice and Men', Octagon Theatre, Bolton) in the production, which will see them bring to life a multitude of extraordinary characters - from local lads with dreams of making it in the movies to burly Scottish security guards and glamorous Hollywood divas with dodgy Irish accents. Director, Paul Warwick, returns to the New Vic for the production, having helmed the theatre-in-the-round's hit-show, 'Laurel and Hardy'.

"Marie Jones's script is also timely, as Whitehall tells us we need to build an 'apiration nation', the play asks questions about things to which we aspire and why," he said. "I am absolutely over the moon about returning to the New Vic. This theatre, this audience and this town are very special: it's a joy and a privilege to be back." A MAJOR £200,000 refurbishment has brought this 1970s' pub excitingly into the 21st century, transforming it into a family-oriented venue! Following the six-week makeover 'mine hosts', Paul and Karen Brown, re-opened The Roaring Meg at Biddulph last December (six months after taking it over), and its new "contemporary look" has proved a big hit with locals and visitors alike. The metamporphosis, funded by Punch Taverns, comprised new furniture and fittings and lighting, plus the installation of a new bar. And it's hardly surprising, since the popular couple (in this, their first pub) ensure that there is always something appealing to all tastes, thanks to a quiz night on Mondays and live entertainment each Saturday. The Roaring Meg was Paul's own 'local' for the previous, 30 years, and he explained: "I could always see the pub's potential, and we wanted to give the pub a whole, new look and feel, appealing to families." The focus at the Pennine Way hostelry is very much on genuine, home-cooked food, and each week (from July) sees a Curry Night (Wednesday) and a Grill Night (Friday), while 'Sit Back Sunday' takes care of dinner for you, with Sunday Lunch (a choice of two or three 'roasts', served with 'all the trimmings') available for just £5.95 or (GO LARGE) at £7.95. As an added bonus, Karen and Paul offer 'OAP Specials' (main course & beverage), which are available all day (12 noon-9pm), Monday-Thursday, for only £4.95. The Main Menu features a host of starters, including such favourites as soup of the day, garlic mushrooms and prawn cocktail, as well as more exotic Chilli Con Queso (breadcrumb-coated jalapenos, filled withcream cheese, served with a sweet chilli dip, nachos & salad garnish) and Oriental-Style Pork Ribs (marinated in Chinese, five-spice, soy sauce, chillies & honey-glaze). Traditional main courses include Decadent Fisherman's Pie (smoked haddock, salmon, cod & eggs in a creamy dill sauce, topped with cheesy mash topping & salad garnish), Liver and Onions, Sausage & Mash and Vegetarian Open Lasagne. Readers can also plump for the '2 for £10 Menu', featuring those perennial favourites: 5oz Gammon Steak, Home-made Pie of the Day, Home-made Beef Burgers, Curry of the
Day, Shepherd's Pie and Traditional Hot Pot. For the health-conscious, there are enticing salads and jacket potatoes, plus a full range of tasty snacks (sandwiches, baguettes, wraps and bagels) and, naturally, a 'Kids' Menu'. Needless to say, a good wine-selection (numbering 14 'vins') complements the excellent fare, and readers can also enjoy a first-rate selection of drinks, including a quartet of traditional, cask-conditioned ales, with a trio of regularly-changing 'guest beers' and Cornish-based Sharp's Brewery's multi-awardwinning Doom Bar Bitter (ABV 4%), one of the UK's fastest-selling brews as the the pub's 'regular'. Live entertainment (ranging from 'easy listening' performers to rock bands) features each Saturday (with occasional Friday night 'specials'). "We're also thinking about staging acoustic nights, probably on a monthly basis," said Paul, adding: "On Sunday, August 18th, we're having a bungee-jump in aid of the County Air Ambulance." Although the pub was built in 1974, its rumbustious name dates back to the English Civil War, when Lord Brereton was besieged at Biddulph Old Hall by the Parliamentarians under the command of his uncle, Sir William Brereton. At first, he held out, but when a massive siege-cannon (the eponymous 'Roaring Meg') was summoned from Stafford, he was forced to surrender in 1644, after which the mansion was demolished, to prevent it being re-garrisoned.

WE all know that domestic soft furnishing is liable to be besmirched by all sorts of 'nasty stains'! It is, of course, imperative to act quickly (and not to use hot water or soap, since these can 'set' many stains). Try cool water or soda-water and dab with a paper-towel. Alternatively, mix 50ml of bioliogical detergent in five litres of luke-warm water and apply the foam with a sponge: if that doesn't work, identify the stain and tackle with the appropriate removing-agent. For those 'old suspects', wine, ink, newsprint and red juice, use milk, applied with a sponge, and, then, remove excess-milk with washing-up liquid. Even worse are 'old' wine, coffee and tea-stains; so, moisten the area with water and, then, dampen with glycerine, rubbing in with your finger. Another solution is to mix half a teaspoon of borax substitute with a tablespoon of water and drip over the stain; when it turns black, rinse with cold water. You can remove blood-stains with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and apply with a clean, white cloth. Grease-spots can be eliminated by using diluted washing-up liquid, but only add a drop of it to the water (otherwise, you will spend an eternity getting rid of the excess-bubbles!). Alternatively, for grease-spots on delicate silkupholstery, dust with cornflour, leave for ten minutes and, then, brush it off with a dry, clean cloth. For crayon, lipstick and other tough stains, use WD40; however, do not apply directly, as this will leave stains, but with a cloth. Remove left-over grease with washing-up liquid (this method is also suitable for removing marks on walls). As a last resort, get out the methylated spirits and ammonia, but it is important to take safetymeasures. Ventilate the room well; wear a mask and gloves; and ensure that children and pets are very far away, since ammonia can irritate the eyes, skin and throat, and exposure can cause serious health-problems. Apply a 50/50 mixture to the stain with a clean, white cloth and rinse thoroughly with water. Repeatedly dab with vinegar (as this acid will neutralise the alkaline ammonia).

1. Leathers. There's no doubt that leathers are one of the best forms of protective clothing which you can wear on your bike. As well as offering great abrasion-protection, they will (in many cases) have fitted body-armour at the back, too. Remember, when buying leathers, always ensure that they fit correctly. 2. Gloves. Another great form of protection is riding gloves, the thicker the better. But, remember, thick gloves will need breaking in to ensure that they give you enough break- and throttle-control. In addition, it's worth having a different pair for both summer and winter. 3. Boots. When choosing boots make sure that they are neither too narrow or wide. 5. Helmet. The best-fitting helmets offer the best protection. When you're buying a new helmet, ensure that try on various sizes to find one that fits the unique size and shape of your head. Make sure it carries a BSI 'kite' mark BS 6658 or European Standard ECE 22 - 05. Never buy one secondhand and make sure that you replace your helmet at least every five years or after an accident. Always fasten your helmet while you are riding, as an unfastened helmet is next to useless in an accident!
