For mature people who enjoy life! Also available online at www.seniorstoday.co.uk Tel: 01782 461711 Do YOU need a Property Trust Will?

UNSURPRISINGLY, few of us have considered what the effect might be on our savings and investments, or even our home, if (as is most probable) we ever needed residential care later in life. Most people assume that we shall pass on our assets to our children or other relatives in due course; yet, this may not always be the case, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect our assets from being taken to pay care home fees. In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the State will only provide for those with little or no savings or assets; everyone else is expected to pay at least part (if not all) of his or her own costs. Currently, anyone with assets in excess of #22,250 (this figure includes the family home) is not eligible for any state help with his or her residential care fees; if you have more than #12,000, but less than #22,500, you are only entitled to partial assistance. The net result is that anyone, who owns his or her own home, is unlikely to receive assistance, even if they do not possess large amounts of cash-assets. Even if you DON'T have the cash readily available, the Department of Social Security can still place a charge against the family home, which enables it

to recover the monies owing, when the property is eventually sold! Bear in mind that average residential care fees start in the region of #500 per week, so it is clear how quickly assets can be eroded. The DSS has often become the sole, outright owner of the family home after the death of an elderly parent, who had been living in a nursing home. HOWEVER, THERE IS A SOLUTION - IN THE FORM OF PROPERTY TRUST WILLS! A 'Property Trust' is based around three, basic elements: the basis on which you own your property, the Trust terms and your Wills, which contain the Trust investment. The Property Trust can only be created, while both partners remain alive and the property must be owned as Tenants in Common (the Trust instrument is, then, included in both Wills, but does not come into force until the death of the first). Upon the first death, their share of the property

(typically 50%) is placed into the Trust to be adminstered by the Trustees nominated in the Will, and this, usually, includes the surviving spouse. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary of this share in the property, and the Trustee's duty is to protect the property for the beneficiaries' benefit. The surviving spouse, under the Trust's terms, has the right to remain living in the property for the rest of his or her life; on the death of the second spouse, the Trust comes to an end, and the property passes absolutely to the beneficiaries. CONTENTS SEPTEMBER 2014 6 The definitive book of the 20th century - George Orwell's '1984' - is re-examined in a radical, new adaptation by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan (presented by Headlong, Nottingham Playhouse and the Almeida Theatre, London), at Blackpool's Grand Theatre, from Tuesday, September 30th, to Saturday, October 4th. '1984' explores surveillance, identity and why the author's vision of the future is as relevant now as ever. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching, and the door to Room 101 can swing open in the blink of an eye! 9 Stoke-on-Trent's very own Country Music Diva, JC Rayne, is bringing her brandnew show to Goldenhill WMC on Sunday, September 21st, courtesy of VIVA Music Promotions! Don't miss your chance to see one of the UK's premier artistes; JC combines a refreshing mix of country, pop, Motown, rock and more in her fine solo performances. She sets out to rock the house with some modernday country/pop, from the likes of Band Perry, Gretchen Wilson, Taylor Swift etc., followed by full-on tributes to Dolly Parton and Shania Twain. However, she's equally at home with the phenomenon of Rock 'n' Roll and the 'Magic of Motown'. 16 Blurton-based Douglas Macmillan Hospice is staging its second 'Woofs and Wellies Walk' at Park Hall Country Park on Sunday, September 7th. Dog-lovers are urged to do their fund-raising best by taking part in a sponsored walk with their canine chum. Entry costs £10 for adults, with a maximum of two dogs, and £2.50 for children. 22 Written and directed by Alan Ayckbourn, 'Roundelay' is a unique adventure in live theatre. Five interconnected tales which showcase the prolific dramatist's particular genius for story, character and theatrical time-travel - and written to be played in no particular order. See it once, see it twice - it's an evening that is unlikely to be repeated! 'Roundelay' can be enjoyed at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre, from Tuesday, October 7th, to Saturday, October 25th. 24 The benefits of regularly grooming your pet are extolled by staff at The Croft Veterinary Clinic, Newcastle. Get your canine or feline chum used to you examining his or her eyes, ears, teeth, feet and giving him or her a general check-over. Parasites need no introduction to most pet-owners! The two, major ones to keep a watchful eye out for are fleas and ticks. However, grass seeds of meadow grasses are easily trapped in the coats of pets (especially dogs). They often migrate and become lodged in a variety of places, including the ear, eyes and between the toes. Regular grooming (especially after walks) is helpful in preventing problems with grass seeds and ticks. sales: 01782 461711

Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word? IF you're an Ostrich, you prefer not to think about the inevitable. Being an Ostrich means trusting the fortunes of your loved ones to chance, once you've gone, and having no control over what happens to your possessions and who should benefit from them. TO an ostrich, death is a five-letter word and a load of stigma. IF, however, you're a wise owl, you take the time to think, question, and act in order to write a will, and take steps to protect your loved ones, when you're gone. WHY BOTHER MAKING A WILL? MY FAMILY WILL GET EVERYTHING WHEN I DIE! WON'T THEY? WRITING a Will may be something you've been thinking about for many years. The reasons for having a Will are many, but, if for no other reason, a Will makes life a lot easier for those you leave behind at a time of sorrow. If you die without a Will (Intestate), your family has to sort out many administrative items and are obliged to the decisions made by law as to who inherits what, decisions you should have really made by writing a Will. AS to when you should write a Will, the answer is NOW. There may be plenty of life in you yet, but accidents and illness have absolutely no respect for age. Also, bear in mind that a modern Will is written in such a way that it shouldn't need much changing, so it's not something you have to think about often, but only in the event of a major change in circumstances, such as marriage, birth of a first child or divorce. SO, why do many people put off the task of writing a Will? EXCUSES: there are many excuses for putting off writing a Will. Here are the most common ones: 1. "WRITING A WILL IS TEMPTING FATE": One in three adults in Britain have already written a Will - so, if writing one has fatal results, the population would soon be reduced by 18 million people! In fact, the British annual deathrate is surprisingly stable and definitely bears no relation to the number of people who write Wills. 2. "I'VE GOT NOTHING TO LEAVE": Everybody leaves something. It may not be much, but, surely, that's even more reason to make sure it goes to those you care about? Also, it is not just making sure your worldly goods go to the right

people. As mentioned, a Will can mean a lot less inconvenience for those left to sort things out. 3. "I JUST HAVEN'T GOT ROUND TO IT": This is normally because the job doesn't rate high enough on your list of priorities. If the roof leaks, no matter what you're doing or how tight your finances, you get it fixed fast! We can honestly say that the vast majority of clients feel great after we have written their Wills. We often receive comments, such as "What a relief" or "I've put it off for years, but, at last, I can rest easy." THE ALTERNATIVE IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results. Your circumstances will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting and Single. Many complexities can arise, and we shall cover these in full detail (as well as dispelling many unfounded, but popular, beliefs about them) in our next issue.

Ask for Tony Heath YEE-HA - IT'S JC RAYNE!! STOKE-ON-TRENT'S very own Country Music Diva, JC Rayne, is bringing her own unique brand of modern/classic country music to Goldenhill WMC on Sunday, September 21st - courtesy of VIVA Music Promotions!

Don't miss your chance to see one of the UK's premier artistes; JC combines a refreshing mix of country, pop, Motown, rock and more in her fine solo performances. She sets out to rock the house with some modern-day country/

pop, from the likes of Band Perry, Gretchen Wilson, Taylor Swift etc., followed by full-on tributes to Dolly Parton and Shania Twain. However, she's equally at-home with the phenomenon of Rock 'n' Roll and the 'Magic of Motown'.

entertainment (plus perenniallypopular Bingo) every Saturday and Sunday evening, with tribute nights a speciality. Indeed, future highlights include tributes to Roy Orbison (September 27th) and The Jersey Boys (Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons) on October 4th. Naturally, the committee has a great line-up of entertainers scheduled for Christmas Eve, Boxing Night and New Year's Eve, and Saturday, December 13th, will see the Members' Christmas Party in full swing. Another big hit at Norton Central is Community Bingo each Monday and Thursday, from 7pm to 9pm (ideal for the club's members who prefer to

come out and go home early in the evening). (Incidentally, these sessions are run by the Community Bingo Committee, which has reciprocated by redecorating the club's groundfloor area). The club is, justifiably, widely acclaimed for its excellent, crown bowling green, and it boasts no less than five outdoor bowling teams (run by member, Kevin Potts). During the winter season, indoor bowls is a popular pursuit at Norton Central, which also offers two snooker-tables, darts facilities and full Sky TV, featuring live coverage for all football and other sports enthusiasts. The club is a 100% Coors venue, and enjoys a very good relationship with the brewing company, through its ultra-helpful area sales representative, Malcolm.

GREETINGS FROM KEVIN & CAROLYN! THIS historic, rustic pub/restaurant in South Derbyshire has an appeal for EVERYONE! The Hardinge Arms, at King's Newton, is located just five minutes from Donington Race Track, and is, for instance, an obvious 'must' for all automobile enthusiasts and bikers! It may be their first pub for Kevin and Carolyn, who have been 'mine hosts' at The Hardinge Arms since Easter, 2014; however, they have been passionately involved in the catering industry for many years. So, it's not surprising that they have been working hard to achieve their aim of bringing good-quality and locally-sourced food to the delightful, Main Street hostelry, alongside local, traditional, caskconditioned ales, carefully-selected wines and comfortable accommodation. Dating back to the 16th century, The Hardinge Arms' menu offers discerning diners not only traditional dishes which have put British pubs on the map, but also 'specials' which show influences from different countries. Carolyn and Kevin have worked carefully together to create a selection of wines (supplied by appositelynamed Le Bon Vin), which wonderfully complement the pub/restaurant's fine fare.

great opportunity to discover the many attractions of South Derbyshire, including, naturally, going on one of the walks which it offers; a day out at Calke Abbey (a National Trust park, featuring home-made produce and brewery); Elvaston Castle and Park (perfect for short strolls, lovely gardens and delicious cakes at its tearooms); Ashby Castle (with great views from the top of its tower, still standing, despite suffering massive damage during the English Civil War!), and, of course, Donington Race Track (which, in addition to its Super bikes, is ideal for enjoying a track-day with your own car or visiting the Motor Museum). Close to the M1 and just off the A50, The Hardinge Arms is open for coffee from 10am, and the Bar is open all day (12 noon-11pm, Monday-Sunday), with food served from 12 noon-2.30pm and 6-9pm (Monday-Friday), and between 12 noon and 9pm (Saturday) and 12 noon and 4pm (Sunday).

THE HARDINGE ARMS

At the same time, 'real ale' aficionados can quaff pints of its beautifully-kept, cask-conditioned beers (which are predominantly locally-brewed, and also change frequently). Located in the old stables adjacent to the pub, its tastefully-decorated, six rooms (twin or double) are all en-suite, with some including original features, such as beams and bare-faced, stone walls. Just a 'stone's throw' away from East Midlands Airport, the pub offers readers a

Gladstone is the only complete, Victorian pottery factory extant from the days when coal-burning ovens made the world's finest none china.

LIVE music returns to Longton's iconic Gladstone Pottery Museum courtyard on Saturday, September 6th. The concert at the Longton museum (which celebrated its 40th anniversary in August) features Psyence, Electroshock Therapy and The Longwave, and, as ever, the bar will be provided by Lymestone Brewery. This outdoor event (for over-18s only) runs from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Tickets costs #6 per person in advance or #7 on the door. Located on Uttoxeter Road, Longton, the 'Working Museum of the Potteries' is open on Tuesday to Saturday and on Bank Holidays, from 10am to 5pm (April-September) and between 10am and 4pm (October-March).

Traditional skills, original workshops, the cobbled yard and huge bottle-kilns create an atmospheric time-warp which has no equal. The friendly Tea Room has a varied menu, and, with a daily roast carvery (and vegetarian alternative), eating at the museum offers excellent value-for-money. The Gladstone Shop stocks a wide range of exclusive, hand-made gifts, including studio ceramics, local paintings, children's novelties and unusual items for the home, complemented by an extensive range of bone china florals and ceramic gifts made at the museum.

CENTRAL HALL WORKSHOP & CONCERT

MEMBERS of St. Matthew's Church, Birches Head, are holding a concert, celebrating the music of legendary entertainer, George Formby (1904-61).

LONGTON'S Methodist Central Hall is hosting a choral workshop and concert with Gordon Stewart on Saturday, November 15th. The event has been organised by acclaimed, local choral group, the Barbara Walton Singers, and offers a chance to study and enjoy the sublime Requiem of French composer, Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), with Gordon, who twice directed BBC's 'Songs of Praise' from Stoke-on-Trent.

The event (a fund-raiser for the Birches Head Road church) will feature the South Cheshire George Formby Ukelele Society on Saturday, September 13th, starting at 7.30pm. The band will play music made famous by the Lancastrian star of British music hall and cinema, as well as other, musical sounds from the same era.

Fauré's Requiem Op. 48 was first performed in 1888. The Central Hall is located on The Strand, and the event runs from 10am to 6pm. Recent concerts by the Barbara Walton Singers have featured performances of Puccini's Messa di Gloria, at Stoke Minster, and Michael Haydn's Missa Sancti Hieronymi, at St. Andrew's Church, Westlands, Newcastle. Tickets for the workshop are priced at £10, with lunch and concert only costing £5 each, and are available on (01889) 502377 or from A Major Music Supplies, Newcastleunder-Lyme, on (01782) 634634.

CONDUCTOR, Gordon Stewart.

MANY people would aver that it is sagacious to open a 'wedding account' with your bank to facilitate the auditing of costs. You should think about numbers of guests and the type of service as soon as possible, so that you know what you are budgeting for. An evening unlikely to be repeated!!

See it once, see it twice - it's an evening unlikely to be repeated!

(In fact, experts recommend that women seek out a nursery as soon as they know that they are pregnant!). All day nurseries etc. have to be registered with their local authority's Social Services Department, and must satisfy strict requirements, concerning ratios of staff to children; space per child; and numbers of qualified staff. In essence, there are two main questions to be answered: first, will your child be looked after by regular, full-time staff, and, second, does the nursery offer a stimulating environment? Preparing youngsters for entry into primary school is the task which day nurseries are allocated by society - and, needless to say, it is a very demanding one! It is the paramount aim of day nurseries to provide a happy, family environment in which each child is encouraged to grow and develop in every way. In addition to instructing pre-schoolers in each aspect of the educational curriculum, they must offer facilities which have been designed with every consideration of child-safety in mind!

For, the present demand for places is greater than ever, so it really is important that you act as soon as possible to ensure that your child is accepted by the venue of your choice!

Research shows that the adult-to-child ratio is an essential factor in determining the success of nursery education.

THE latest Alan Ayckbourn to be staged (in conjunction with the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough) at the New Vic, Newcastle, is a unique adventure in live theatre. 'Roundelay' comprises five, interconnected tales which showcase the prolific playwright's particular genius for story, character and theatrical time-travel, and is written to be played in no particular order.

AS the new, September terms beckons, it is absolutely imperative for parents to consider a number of vital points, when considering entry into local day nurseries and playgroups.

COURSES FOR HORSES 'More than just a Riding School'!! COURSES for Horses is the premier British Horse Society-Approved Riding and Training Centre for North Staffordshire and South Cheshire. We are based in the beautiful Staffordshire Moorlands, near Stoke-on-Trent, and we have 23 horses and ponies and three arenas, one of which is indoors. Our strapline says: 'More than just a Riding School', and what we have alway aimed to do is to give more than the usual 'bums on saddles' approach to learning to ride. We do not teach in groups. The reason for this is that each person is different - even if they are of the same level as someone else, they have individual challenges, and learn at different rates and in different ways. What this means is that we are different from every other riding school in the area. We offer riding tuition to all ages from 4 upwards. Out oldest clients are in their sixties and seventies! And we have the full range in between. But the learning doesn't stop with how to ride. We also believe that understanding the horse as a creature is just

as important as the physical side. Once riders understand the animals they are dealing with their minds, their emotions, their past history - true harmony and partnership can be created. This is the essence of Classical training - which is the method we use. We are passionate about correct riding, and love nothing more than to see our clients getting more and more proficient. In short, we take them where they want to go. Some are happy merely to ride well, others have ambitions to own their own horses and there are some who want more - to excel. We have a wide range of horse-care courses and also run evening lectures and demos with experts in their fields, such as vets, saddlers, physios and trainers. For children, we have a thriving pony club where we teach through fun and games all about ponies and how to care for them. Adults can also enjoy specialist courses, such as Confidence Building, Dressage, Jumping and Working from the ground. We hold regular 'fun' competitions were riders can learn how to compete at dressage, showing and jumping in a low-pressure atmosphere. For the more serious riders, we are an approved centre for instructor-training and our proprietor, Mary Stitson BHSII/SM, offers lessons for people on their own horses or those wishing to advance their riding, using our schoolmasters. Our team of BGS-qualified instructors teach all levels of riders, from complete beginners to dressage and showjumping

competitors, and we welcome riders with disabilities - either as part of our Riding for the Disabled Group or one to one. Our approach is that each person can improve, no matter what their age, ability or previous experience, and we often have more mature adults coming to us who have never ridden before. Our horses are all safe, sensible and well-trained, and we have the highest standards of welfare. Each horse is treated as an individual, and we are constantly looking to make their lives as good as possible. For our clients, we offer a friendly service where each person's safety, enjoyment and progress is paramount. To help with that, we have a structural training system, where riders are taught methodically, and we aim to make them as informal as possible, so that, should they wish, they will be confident to have a horse of their own one day. So, if you've ever wanted to learn to ride, but felt that it was too scary; used to ride and want to get back into it; or that you would be over-faced in a group, we can help! We offer lessons every day (except Mondays), including evenings, and provide discounts for our regular clients. If you would like to know more, feel free to visit. For opening-times, prices and much, much more, visit us at www.coursesforhorses. co.uk or call the office on (01782) 505664.

Property Maintenance & Repairs Experts will ensure peace-ofmind IT is self-evident that a high-quality, tailored 'finish' can add instant value and appeal to any property (be it your domicile or business). Whether you require the fixing of a leaky tap or a complete refurbishment, it is always advisable to consult an expert (i.e., an experienced, professional plumber, carpenter, roofer, plasterer etc.). Indeed, readers are obviously seeking a qualified tradesperson to fit your bathroom, replace decking, install a radiator, tile walls or floors, unblock drains and/or fix guttering - all carried out both reliably and accurately.

Standard painting and decorating includes wallpapering, tiling, repainting and plastering, while carpentry involves fitting doors, floors, skirting-boards, fencing, decking, joists, fascias, staircases (and much more!). Plumbing and drainage tasks include carrying out thorough roofing-assessments (essential for older properties and those with slow leaks). Expert roofers can advise on roof-care, and also make repairs to your roof, chimney and guttering. Using experienced professionally-trained carpenters/joiners make a real difference to the finish of your property. Traditional carpentry and joinery techniques, using modern materials, ensure a permanent repair to even period properties.

FUNERAL SERVICES Offering Quality & Care Which You Can Trust THE service which this family-run business provides is designed to be affordable and reliable at all times. Whether readers are looking for a headstone or cremation memorial, JBM Memorials is able to give you the information which you need to purchase a lasting tribute to the memory of a loved one, thanks to the sensitive approach shown by its friendly staff. JBM Memorials ensures that it can offer quality craftsmanship by employing a small, close-knit team of experienced masons. Cemetery and churchyard authorities almost always have regulations regarding the types of memorials which they will allow. These regulations vary from place to place and, therefore, need to be checked before any choice is made. In addition, certain varieties of stone may be more appropriate in some places than in others, not only for their appearance, but also because of the effect of weather or local conditions. There are several, different factors to be taken into consideration, when choosing a memorial: stone-type; selection of stone-shape and ornamentation; and

selection of size and lettering-finish. A reputable memorial mason will advise you on all of these matters. It is, of course, possible to choose a design from a mason's brochure or display; however, if you would prefer something more individual, a reputable memorial mason will be only-too-pleased to design it for you. The staff at JBM Memorials are committed to making your choice of memorial as easy and stress-free as possible, and home-visits are available, on request, for people's convenience. They do this by providing the general public with highquality stone masonry; offering an outstanding level of traditional, hand-carved craftsmanship; and have many headstone memorials on show in the workshop. All types of monumental and stonework are undertaken, wonderfully complemented by cleaning and restoration work and second inscriptions. A wide range of activities is provided by the home's staff, and this programme is devised, following discussion with residents and relatives. Moreover, residents with any suggestions can discuss them with Care Manager, Janet Bentley (who has worked at Spratslade for an impressive 26 years), or one of the home's senior carers. The home offers breakfast, lunch and an evening meal, with snacks and drinks provided each day and night (a varied menu-cycle has been advised, via consultation with residents, to meet their dietary and nutritional needs). Additional facilities (including weekly hairdressing-visits; optical and dental services, and visits by a private chiropodist) are also available. Importantly, Pearlcare (Spratslade Ltd.) is consistently committed to its staff, and supports their personal development through training and career-progression, believing that this will allow the company to continue to focus upon developing standards of excellence in all of its homes.
