In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the State will only provide for those with little or no savings or assets; everyone else is expected to pay at least part (if not all) of his or her own costs. Currently, anyone with assets in excess of £22,250 (this figure includes the family home) is not eligible for any state help with his or her residential care fees; if you have more than £12,000, but less than £22,500, you are only entitled to partial assistance. Upon the first death, their share of the property (typically 50%) is placed into the Trust to be adminstered by the Trustees nominated in the Will, and this, usually, includes the surviving spouse. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary of this share in the property, and the Trustee's duty is to protect the property for the beneficiaries' benefit. The surviving spouse, under the Trust's terms, has the right to remain living in the property for the rest of his or her life; on the death of the second spouse, the Trust comes to an end, and the property passes absolutely to the beneficiaries. Inspired by Bury FC, Age UK's successful Walking Football Project offers improved FITNESS, FUN and FRIENDSHIP. It demonstrates how older fans of the 'beautiful game' can still be NIFTY AT 50, 60 and even 70-PLUS, rediscovering former skills and developing new ones, as well as improving STAMINA, MUSCLE-STRENGTH, BALANCE and MOBILITY. Player, Tom (64), says: "It's boosted my fitness, and lets me continue with a sport I love." Combining a slower pace and smaller (3G) pitches, this competitive NON-CONTACT sport REDUCES the RISK OF INJURY and stress on the body. Running and slide-tackles are BANNED, earning a free-kick to the opposition! With partners, Sportscape, supplying QUALIFIED COACHES, this project's success has attracted additional funding from Staffordshire County Council to extend the operation at BIDDULPH HIGH SCHOOL (10am-11am). CONTENTS JULY 2014 8 As the day comes to a close, the night comes alive in Blackpool, with breathtaking theatre, awe-inspiring circus and variety, and some of the greatest bars and clubs in the UK. Britain's biggest and best FREE lightshow shines from late-August to early-November. Make a note of the date now and visit the country's most popular seaside resort for the huge Switch-On Weekend on The Tower Festival Headland on Friday, August 29th, 2014! 11 Bradwell WMC's committee, staff and members are celebrating the club's 60th anniversary in style over the weekend of July 18th-20th! Headlining the entertainment on Friday, July 19th, is the Northern-based, male vocal harmony trio, Dream Legion, performing fabulous cover versions of some of the best songs from the '60s, right up to the present day. Three, experienced professional musicians, Ian, Lou and Mike produce exceptional vocals and superb musicianship (on drums, guitar and keyboards/bass). 19 Music in the Round's resident group, Ensemble 360, makes a welcome return to Newcastle's New Vic Theatre with an intriguing programme on Monday, July 21st. The internationally-renowned musicians are back with a beautiful programme for oboe and strings, featuring the expressive Oboe Quartet of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-91) and the Austrian composer's entertaining, but surprising, Divertimento for String Trio in E flat K. 563, alongside the youthful Phantasy Quartet of Benjamin Britten (1913-66). 20 With the onset of Summer weather, many pets will start to itch and scratch; two of the commonest causes are fleas and allergies. The former need no ontroduction to most pet-owners! During the Winter months, fleas usually breed only indoors (making the most of the central-heating). However, as the weather warms up, the problem becomes far more serious, as they can also breed outside in parks and gardens. Staff at The Croft Veterinary Clinic, Newcastle-under-Lyme, have listed the problems posed For further details,you can contact the practice on (01782) 711800. 26 This feature offers a host of 'top tips' regarding the world of 'Summer Motorcycling'. On a hot day, we've all been tempted to leave our leathers at home and ride off in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, but a slide on tarmac at just 30mph could result in serious injuries. With the right 'kit', the right skills and the right attitude, there is no reason why riding cannot be a safe, conventional and enjoyable way to get around.

Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word? IF you're an Ostrich, you prefer not to think about the inevitable. Being an Ostrich means trusting the fortunes of your loved ones to chance, once you've gone, and having no control over what happens to your possessions and who should benefit from them. TO an ostrich, death is a five-letter word and a load of stigma. IF, however, you're a wise owl, you take the time to think, question, and act in order to write a will, and take steps to protect your loved ones, when you're gone. WHY BOTHER MAKING A WILL? MY FAMILY WILL GET EVERYTHING WHEN I DIE! WON'T THEY? WRITING a Will may be something you've been thinking about for many years. The reasons for having a Will are many, but, if for no other reason, a Will makes life a lot easier for those you leave behind at a time of sorrow. If you die without a Will (Intestate), your family has to sort out many administrative items and are obliged to the decisions made by law as to who inherits what, decisions you should have really made by writing a Will. AS to when you should write a Will, the answer is NOW. There may be plenty of life in you yet, but accidents and illness have absolutely no respect for age. Also, bear in mind that a modern Will is written in such a way that it shouldn't need much changing, so it's not something you have to think about often, but only in the event of a major change in circumstances, such as marriage, birth of a first child or divorce. SO, why do many people put off the task of writing a Will? EXCUSES: there are many excuses for putting off writing a Will. Here are the most common ones: 1. "WRITING A WILL IS TEMPTING FATE": One in three adults in Britain have already written a Will - so, if writing one has fatal results, the population would soon be reduced by 18 million people! In fact, the British annual deathrate is surprisingly stable and definitely bears no relation to the number of people who write Wills. 2. "I'VE GOT NOTHING TO LEAVE": Everybody leaves something. It may not be much, but, surely, that's even more reason to make sure it goes to those you care about? Also, it is not just making sure your worldly goods go to the right

people. As mentioned, a Will can mean a lot less inconvenience for those left to sort things out. 3. "I JUST HAVEN'T GOT ROUND TO IT": This is normally because the job doesn't rate high enough on your list of priorities. If the roof leaks, no matter what you're doing or how tight your finances, you get it fixed fast! We can honestly say that the vast majority of clients feel great after we have written their Wills. We often receive comments, such as "What a relief" or "I've put it off for years, but, at last, I can rest easy." THE ALTERNATIVE IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results. Your circumstances will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting and Single. Many complexities can arise, and we shall cover these in full detail (as well as dispelling many unfounded, but popular, beliefs about them) in our next issue.

Ingots JEWELLERS

01782 818611

110 High Street, Tunstall, ST6 5TJ

Friendly, personal service & premier-quality products Steve & Paula have genuinely recreated the world of the '60s!!

"This is a hard-working area; so, we are committed to giving all our customers genuine valuefor-money, complemented, naturally, by bona fide quality.

STEVE and Paula's appositely-named, new business on Tunstall High Street is 'VINTAGE'-themed - and its owners pride themselves upon the 'vintage' nature of the service which they offer!

"Since opening recently, we have launched our own savings club at the business.

By 'vintage', Steve and Paula mean a commitment to the sort of polite, friendly and quality service (not to mention excellence of product) which was expected during the 1960s - the decade which infuses the delightful interior of Ingots Jewellers - and is, quite simply, unavailable elsewhere. Between them, the new business's coproprietors possess more than 35 years' experience and expertise accrued, working at the legendary, Hanley firm of jewellers, F.A. Buck. Ingots specialises in dealing in QUALITY second-hand jewellery (both gold and silver), and it was exactly this area that Steve majored in, when he was manager at Buck's for no less than 25 years. "Paula and I have lived all our lives in Stoke-on-Trent, and we are very aware of the state of people's pockets in this day and age, and we have all the necessary experience and expertise to repair and restore second-hand jewellery," explained Steve.

"As a matter of fact, jewellery was made so much better in the 1970s and '80s; you can check this yourself, and you realise that items are five times the weight they are these days!" As you can see from the photographs, Ingots Jewellers is a traditional, selfconsciously 'old-fashioned' shop (especially designed by Steve and Paula), where visitors to the most northerly of Stoke-onTrent's Six Towns will, indeed, on entering, imagine that they are in the 1960s!

famous, Hanley business, Pidduck's." The locally-unique quality of service at Ingots extends to presentation, as ALL purchases are automatically gift-wrapped (meaning that it is already a perfect present, when you leave the High Street premises).

"Even the clock and the till are vintage-themed, and, since opening in June, many customers have told us that we have created a beautiful shop that is a credit to busy Tunstall High Street," Paula told us. However, it is to the policy of always providing a service that is not only ultraprofessional, but also polite, friendly and courteous. "We approach all our customers in the same, traditional manner, we were taught during our many years at F.A. Buck, of Hanley," said Steve.

Located just below Tunstall Post Office, Ingots Jewellers' double-fronted shop is open from 9.30am to 5pm, MondaySaturday, and enjoys very good parkingfacilities.

"Paula and I also received a lot of invaluable training from staff at another

Activities & entertainment galore!! IT'S Carnival-time in both Congleton and Biddulph! Festivities come to Congleton from Friday, July 11th, to Sunday, July 13th - and the organising team is planning that this year will be bigger than in 2012, offering a great weekend in 'Beartown'! The celebratory fun begins on Friday 11th with the 'Holler' musical event on Hankinson's Field; many top, local acts have already signed up, and tickets are priced at just #5. Saturday is Carnival Day: the procession (including floats, bands, dancers, people in fancy-dress and vintage cars and bikes [all with a 1970s' theme!]) will start at 11am from Bromley Road. It will, then, make its way through the town and to the Park, where there will be stalls, food and drink, fairrides, entertainment and lots of fun for all ages. In the evening, the 'Party in the Park' has some top tribute bands from the '70s; tickets will sold via Congleton Tourist Information Centre and at other venues. Carnival continues for an additional day, with Congleton hosting 'It's a Knockout' in the Park on Sunday, July 13th.

Indeed, the sport was introduced to Latin America by English and Scottish rail- and mine-workers, as the sport began its captivation of the entire world. Where trade, gunboats and religion failed, football certainly succeeded! On February 18th, 1894, Charles Miller, the Brazilian-born son of a Scottish railway engineer, returned from his studies in Southampton with two footballs in his trunk and a set of rules in his pocket. He went on to become one of the founding fathers of South American football, organising the first formal league in Brazil.

LOCALS love this 'new-look' communityoriented pub in South Cheshire - and it's not hard to see why! For, The Fox Inn, at Elworth, near Sandbach, has just benefited from a major, £230,000 refurbishment (courtesy of owner, Punch Taverns), which has produced a truly fantastic result for 'mine hosts', Graham and Sally Arnold. The substantially-redeveloped venue (officially reopened in April) now features a brighter, new look and fresh décor, enhancing its appeal to not only locals, but also visitors from far and wide.

Specialists in horse box repairs & service ITCHY SCRATCHY - IS YOUR PET AFFECTED? THE onset of summer weather means that many pets will start to itch and scratch, and two of the commonest of causes are fleas and allergies. FLEAS need little introduction to most petowners! During the winter months, fleas usually breed only indoors (making the most of central-heating). However, as the weather warms up, the problem becomes far more serious, as fleas can ALSO breed outside in parks and gardens. Here, any dormant flea-eggs from last year will rapidly hatch out into adult fleas which will hop onto passing pets, bringing dozens of these tiny pests back to your home. Adult fleas feed on your pet's blood, causing a range of symptoms (including itchy skin, infections, rashes and hair-loss), and they can also bite human beings! Worse still, they hop off out pets, and make their home in pet-beds, carpets and soft furnishings, where the flea life-cycle is completed. Adult female fleas can lay up to 50 eggs per day, and these fall off your pet onto carpets, bedding and outside areas. Whilst the eggs can remain dormant for many months, in warm weather they will rapidly hatch out and develop (via larvae-stages) into adult fleas. With a life-cycle of about a month, fleanumbers can rise dramatically in the summer. ALLERGIES are another problem seen commonly in the spring and summer months. Allergies are immune reactions where an animal responds abnormally to a common

These substances are called ALLERGENS, and pets come into contact with them in three main ways:

* Inhaled (e.g. pollens)

* Ingested (e.g. food allergies)

Cedar Avenue, Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire ST7 1LA

* Contact (e.g. flea-bite allergy, where certain pets develop an allergy to flea-saliva). INHALED ALLERGIES are a major cause of problems in humans and pets at this time of the year. Every type of plant and tree produces pollen, and the surge in pollen-levels can lead to inhaled allergies. When outdoors, pets and humans inhale dozens of pollens, but the allergic symptoms are, often, very different. Whilst humans get 'hay fever', affected pets tend to show SKIN symptoms. Dogs may show generalised itchiness, but, more commonly, may show LOCALISED signs of paw-chewing, face-rubbing and itchy ears. So, if your pet is showing signs of skin-problems, visit The Croft Veterinary Clinic, at Newcastle, for a check-up! Its staff can check for fleas (and otrher parasites), and advise you on the best, preventative products.

Adding instant value & appeal to your home

IT is an indisputable verity that a high-quality, tailored 'finish' can add instant value and appeal to any property (be it your domicile or business). Whether you require the fixing of a leaky tap or a complete refurbishment, it is always advisable to consult an expert (i.e., an experienced, professional plumber, carpenter, roofer, plasterer etc.). Indeed, readers are obviously seeking a qualified tradesperson to fit your bathroom, replace decking, install a radiator, tile walls or floors, unblock drains and/or fix guttering - all carried out both reliably and accurately. Standard painting and decorating includes wallpapering, tiling, repainting and plastering, while carpentry involves fitting doors, floors, skirting-boards, fencing, decking, joists, fascias, staircases (and much more!).

Top tips for bikers HERE are some timely tips which will help you to be an 'Easy Rider'. Keep your bike in perfect running-order: 1. Clean. Giving your bike a 'spit-and-polish' every weekend not only keeps it looking great, it also helps you spot any potential problems. 2. Tyres. Keeping your tyres in 'good nick' is absolutely vital, because they seriously affect your bike's handling. Check your tyre-pressure on a regular basis, and be aware that your tyres need adjusting, if you are carrying heavy luggage or even an extra passenger. In addition, check your tyres for wear (in Britain, motorcycles over 50cc must have at least 1mm of tyre-tread-depth across three-quarters of the tread-pattern and visible tread on the remaining quarter). Motorcycles under 50cc must have clearly-visible grooves across the original treadpattern. 3. Chain. Keep your chain-tension adjusted in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines. Keep it lubricated with the appropriate chain-oil, and check 'wear-and-tear' on the sprockets, which will give you a good indication if the chain has been adjusted correctly. 4. Brake-pads. By cleaning your wheel regularly, you will see how much wear that you have left on your brakepads. Never let them wear down to the minimum: if you do, your discs will become scored and damaged, which is expensive to repair. After a long ride, be sure to strip and clean your pads and callipers quickly, so that they perform to their best next time out. 5. Security. There's nothing more heart-breaking than having a bike stolen; so, always keep your bike locked to something solid and immovable. When you are buying a lock, look for one that is Thatcham Approved or Sold Secure. Also be aware that insurance companies may offer you a discount if you have evidence that your bike is locked up securely.

He came, he saw, he conga-ed!! UNCLE Eric and his brilliant gang of singers, actors and musicians are returning to the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle, with their brand-new show. 'Eric & Cleopatra' is an ancient Roman spectacular, filled with comedy, sandals and the greatest hits of the 1960s. Back we go into the mists of time to meet Uncle Eric's ancestor among the Ancient Britons. Eric the Smith has been captured and taken as a slave to Rome, where it is discovered that he is the spitting image of the great Mark Antony. Disguised as the Roman leader, he is sent to meet Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt and the world's most beautiful woman. But Cleopatra looks remarkably like someone from Eric's murky past. Is it a bluff? Or a double-bluff? Will Eric change the course of history forever? Will Mark

What started out fourteen years ago as a one-night event has now become a North Staffordshire tradition, attracting record-breaking audiences. "When I first brought Eric here, he was on tour, but, since then, Newcastle has become somewhere really special for him, with a new script written each time he comes back, especially for the New Vic," explained actor, musician, scriptwriter, director and producer, David Graham. You can enjoy 'Eric & Cleopatra' from Monday, August 18th, to Saturday, August 30th, at 7.30pm. At the end of the term, customers trade in the car as a deposit on a new vehicle and begin another three-year deal with the same dealer. FUNERAL SERVICES Offering Quality & Care Which You Can Trust THE service which this family-run business provides is designed to be affordable and reliable at all times. Whether readers are looking for a headstone or cremation memorial, JBM Memorials is able to give you the information which you need to purchase a lasting tribute to the memory of a loved one, thanks to the sensitive approach shown by its friendly staff. JBM Memorials ensures that it can offer quality craftsmanship by employing a small, close-knit team of experienced masons. Cemetery and churchyard authorities almost always have regulations regarding the types of memorials which they will allow. These regulations vary from place to place and, therefore, need to be checked before any choice is made. In addition, certain varieties of stone may be more appropriate in some places than in others, not only for their appearance, but also because of the effect of weather or local conditions. There are several, different factors to be taken into consideration, when choosing a memorial: stone-type; selection of stone-shape and ornamentation; and selection of size and lettering-finish. A reputable memorial mason will advise you on all of these matters. It is, of course, possible to choose a design from a mason's brochure or display; however, if you would prefer something more individual, a reputable memorial mason will be only-toopleased to design it for you. The staff at JBM Memorials are committed to making your choice of memorial as easy and stress-free as possible, and home-visits are available, on request, for people's convenience. They do this by providing the general public with high-quality stone masonry; offering an outstanding level of traditional, hand-carved craftsmanship; and have many headstone memorials on show in the workshop. All types of monumental and stonework are undertaken, wonderfully complemented by cleaning and restoration work and second inscriptions. Using granite, slate, marble, limestone and York stone, the business's range of products also includes pet memorials, crematorium plaques and stone renovation work. Supplying everything from gravestones to individual design memorials, JBM Memorials has two shop-outlets with a showroom and workshop.
