Currently, anyone with assets in excess of £22,250 (this figure includes the family home) is not eligible for any state help with his or her residential care fees; if you have more than £12,000, but less than £22,500, you are only entitled to partial assistance. Upon the first death, their share of the property (typically 50%) is placed into the Trust to be adminstered by the Trustees nominated in the Will, and this, usually, includes the surviving spouse. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary of this share in the property, and the Trustee's duty is to protect the property for the beneficiaries' benefit. The surviving spouse, under the Trust's terms, has the right to remain living in the property for the rest of his or her life; on the death of the second spouse, the Trust comes to an end, and the property passes absolutely to the beneficiaries. CONTENTS August 2014 6 A spectacular celebration of the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons can be enjoyed at Blackpool's Grand Theatre until Saturday, August 16th. 'New Jersey Nights' takes you on a nostalgic musical journey through the career of one of the biggest-selling groups of all time. The production features an award-winning cast of singers, dancers, unique stage-sets and a rockin' on-stage band. New Jersey Nights' has smashed box office records throughout the USA and UK, and is proving to be one of the most successful touring shows of all time! 8 The theme of this year's Betley Show (the 157th) is 'The Circus', and readers will enjoy a fun and entertaining day-out on Saturday, August 2nd. As in 2013, the main sponsors are Sebastian JD Daly, MRCVS, Poll Farm Veterinary Surgery, and The Swan Inn. Afternoon attractions will include village green activities, children's entertainment, Jack the Jester, a magician, face-painting, and vintage cars and motorbikes Jester, in addition to such perennial favourites as the dog show, cavy (huinea pig) show and horse showjumping. 11 One of the most sought-after vocalists in the North-West, Louise Rogan, will be delighting the audience at Goldenhill WMC on Sunday, August 24th. Louise generates energy and excitement everywhere she performs. With her easy on-stage style, her warm personality shines through in every performance. Louise sings everything from country, jazz, rock, swing and soul to current chart-hits. 14 Gandini Juggling presents the awardwinning show, Smashed, at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre on Wednesday, September 24th. 80 apples, nine performers, four sets of crockery feature in a mesmerising mix of circus and theatre, exploring lost love and afternoon tea. At the forefront of contemporary circus for over 20 years, Gandini Juggling have performed in more than 40 countries. 18 Gum disease is an ever-present problem for pets! A healthy mouth usually has shrimppink gums and bright, white teeth. However, problems will occur, if plaque bacteria are allowed to build up on the surface of the teeth. Over time accumulation of sticky plaque leads to inflammation and reddening of the gums (termed gingivitis). This is frequently accompanied by the agglomeration of calculus (tartar) on the teeth, along with a very bad breath! Contact staff at The Croft Veterinary Clinic, Newcastle, for a dental check-up and to find out more about caring for your pet's teeth on (01782) 711800.

Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word? THIS month, we discuss the many complexities which can arise from NOT making a Will.

judicial decisions and custom.

WHAT MOST PEOPLE THINK OR HOPE!

SINGLE: If a single person dies without a Will, the line of Inheritance can be complicated and can often involve relatives you have never even met!

SO, if you are Cohabitee, the information on single people is more appropriate to you.

IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results. YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting or Single. MARRIED: In the event of the death of a married person, the Intestacy rules divide the Estate into shares, with a share going to the surviving husband or wife (the spouse). The amount a spouse can inherit is restricted to an amount set by the Government. THE POPULAR BELIEF that a spouse automatically inherits everything is simply not true. This is because your nearest blood-relations (children, parents, brothers, sisters etc.) are also entitled to take a share under the Intestacy Rules inherit, with the rising values of Estates, the SPOUSE'S SHARE could be the smallest one. FACT: If you have not made a Will, even your life insurance policies will not be paid until probate has been granted, unless they are written into trust! (Probate will take many months, sometimes years, to be granted!). FACT: If your Children are orphaned and you have not appointed a guardian in a Will, then Social Services will decide who looks after them, including allocating them to Foster Parents). FACT: If there are no surviving members of your family, the whole Estate would go to the Crown (Government). COHABITING: Thousands of people live together without getting married. Unfortunately, most think that, after a few years together or if they have become a Common Law husband or wife and have same rights as a married person. Let there be no doubt about this. If you live with another person unmarried (including single-sex couples), with respect to finance and inheritance you are known as a Cohabitee and do not have the same rights as a married person. The general term, Common Law, means law-based

HERE WE GO... first, you children will inherit your whole Estate - if there are no surviving children, next in line are your grandchildren - if you have no grandchildren, then both your parents - if both have died before you, then your brothers and/or nieces - if none, then your cousins (however far removed) and, if no cousins, everything goes to the Government... phew! IF you are single and without a Will, I can hear you are thinking: 'Well, that's OK, it will go to my children, anyway'). That may be partly true, but what is also true is that it will take months and, possibly, years to sort out your affairs (obtain Probate), and the Solicitors who sort this out will charge THOUSANDS OF POUNDS for their work. This is money that, for the sake of making your Will (£69), you could have left your Children! Even if you have no Children or close family, many people would want their Estate to go to CLOSE FRIENDS or a CHARITY, rather than the GOVERNMENT OR UNKNOWN RELATIONS.

At the age of 15, Matt moved to Majorca, Spain, with the family to work as an entertainer around the clubs and bars with his father (even becoming an MC at one of Magaluf's most famous venues). After seven, great years, he, then, decided to move to Benidorm, Costa Blanca, where he still performed in the duo, and, eventually, over the years, joined a Take That tribute as lead singer, building up a huge fan-base throughout the UK.

TERRIFIC chanteuse, Louise Rogan, will be entertaining the audience at Goldenhill WMC on Sunday, August 24th. One of the NorthWest's most sought-after female vocalists, Louise generates energy and excitement wherever she performs. With an easy on-stage style, her warm personality shines through every performance, she can sing everything from country, jazz, rock, swing and soul to current chart-hits.

After 15 years in Spain and its islands, Matt decided that he wanted a solo career back in Britain.

Louise sang this year at Grand Prix Silverstone, and is very proud to have played at the Echo Arena in 2008.

He has appeared on numerous television programmes, including ITV's 'Daybreak', Polish TV, Central News, The Michael Barrymore Show, 'Benidorm Unpacked', the Louis Spence showbusiness programme and Spanish X-Factor.

She is also part of one the most criticallyacclaimed tribute shows, 'Rumours of Fleetwood Mac'. She has also performed before more than to 600,000 people, having honed her skills to perfection as a highly-polished solo performer.

OUT & ABOUT FROM GHANA - WITH (RESTORED) LOVE!! IN mid-September, readers have your first opportunity to see a newly-restored steam locomotive in operation! Locally-based Moseley Railway Trust reports that its Hudswell Clarke locomotive no. 1238 passed its steam-test on Tuesday, June 24th. moving under its own power for the the first time in 66 years. Built in Leeds in 1916, this 2'0"-gauge locomotive was delivered to a gold mine in Ghana (or Gold Coast, as it was, then, known). It worked until 1948, when an accident left it upside down in a swamp, tragically killing its driver, Kofi Asamoah. The locomotive was rediscovered in 1996, recovered and displayed at AngloGold Ashanti's mine complex, and the company allowed its repatriation in 2008. After a period on display in unrestored condition, it moved to a private workshop, where a small team of Moseley Railway Trust members laboured to restore it

from the very poor state in which it arrived in the UK to the gleaming machine that it has now become (amongst many other items, a complete, new boiler has been required). Funding and othwer support have come from many sources; predominantly, this was a significant legacy in memory of Terry Stanhope, a life-long, narrow-gauge railway enthusiast.

engine - Hudswell Clarke no. 1643, of 1930.

A PRISM grant was also received, in recognition of the locomotive's importance to the country's industrial heritage.

This locomotive (known as 'GP39'), although similar in design, is painted bright red, and should make an interesting contrast to no. 1238's military black!

(The Transport Trust also supported the project, as did numerous individuals).

The 1930 locomotive is normally based at the Statfold Barn Railway.

Commented Phil Robinson, MRT Chairman: "We are absolutely delighted to have completed this restoration; it's been a long, hard slog, with many set-backs, but the final result makes it all worthwhile."

Moseley Railway Trust thanks Graham Lee and his team at Statfold, not only for the loan of 'GP39', but also for their support throughout the restoration of Hudswell 1238.

Following the 'final touches' to its restoration, the Hudswell Clarke 1238 locomotive has moved to the Trust's base at Apedale, near Alsagers Bank, in Newcastleunder-Lyme. It can be viewed in steaming action at MRT's 'Tracks to the Trenches' gala there from Friday, September 12th, to Sunday, September 14th, when it will be joined by a very similar

WEDNESDAY, August 20th, 2014, will be a day to savour for not only owner, Phil Simic, but also hundreds of bodybuilders and health-andfitness enthusiasts throughout North Staffordshire! For, this date marks the 30th anniversary of Powerhouse Gym Bodybuilding & Fitness Centre at Sandyford, near Tunstall, in Stoke-on-Trent, confirming it as (probably) the area's longestestablished operation! SO, WHY IS POWERHOUSE GYM (NOW IN ITS 31ST YEAR) SO SUCCESSFUL? Phil stressed the emphasis that he places on his business's independence. "Powerhouse is, quite simply, a good, clean, functional, well-equipped and maintained gym and fitness centre, offering popular openingtimes that suit our members," he told us. "It also boasts a great atmosphere and members to match!" It was on August 20th, in 1984, that sole proprietor, Phil, launched his business, and, since then, Powerhouse (located at Unit 22, Newfield Industrial Estate, on the High Street) has more than lived up to its dynamic name. Indeed, it is widely renowned for producing

01782 746278

top-line body-builders on not only a local, but also a national level! The 30th anniversary also reinforces the impact that this gym has had upon life in the north of the county. This essential, popularising task undertaken by Phil's business will be underlined on Saturday, September 27th, when Kidsgrove Town Hall hosts the now-traditional North Staffordshire Open Bodybuilding event (which he has organised each year since its inception in 1982, and is, therefore, celebrating its own 34th anniversary!), plus 'Mr. Stoke-on-Trent'. Categories comprise Juniors (21 or under), Seniors (over-40-50s), First-Time, Novice, Miss Toned Figure and Mr. Open (no entry-fee for competitors). For the Pre-Judging, the doors open at 12.30pm (pay £5 on the door), while, for the Night Show, the doors open at 6.30pm and a limited number of tickets are priced at £10. All competitors wishing to enter the 'Mr. Stoke-on-Trent' MUST reside in the ST POSTCODE ONLY.

GUM DISEASE - A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IF your pet's breath leaves a lot to be desired, it is likely that GUM DISEASE is the underlying problem! A healthy mouth usually has shrimp-pink gums and bright, white teeth. However, problems will occur if plaque bacteria are allowed to build up on the surface of the teeth.

premiere was given in Norwegian at the Aurora Turner Hall, in Chicago, USA, on May 20th, 1882. Ibsen disolike the English translator, William Archer's, use of the word, 'Ghosts', as the play's title, whereas the Danish word, 'Gjengangere', would be more accurately translated as 'The Revenants' (meaning lierally, 'The Ones Who Return').

The New Vic Theatre at Newcastle is presenting director, Richard Eyre's, acclaimed, awardwinning, new version of 'Ghosts' by Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), in September, following its West End debut at Trafalgar Studios.

How to ease the stress and strain of 'Big Day' preparations IT is, indubitably, true that planning for your 'Big Day' CAN be both stressful and time-consuming - but it doesn't have to be! Firstly, don't overdo the wedding reception details; so, keep the tables simple and elegant. Also, choosing a plain, fresh reception will look great and save you cash on those annoyingly-unnecessary,

“Always & Forever” is a family business based in Stone, Staffordshire, and our aim is to make your special day even more special. Covering the Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford and South Cheshire regions, we can make sure you arrive in true style on your most important day. Tel: 07979

little extra which you won't really need or use. If you have paid the wedding venue for cases of wine to go with the wedding breakfast, check how many are actually used; if you have any 'leftovers' at the end of the repast, they can be placed behind the bar during the evening, thus saving not only your own budget but also your guests pounds and pounds. Instead of buying flowers for both your ceremony and reception, purchase one bulkload of wedding flowers and use them for both! After the ceremony, ask a member of staff or a bridesmaid to help move them across to the reception while you are having your photographs taken. Fourthly, use your wedding cake as dessert to avoid paying for an additional course. Ask for some jugs of cream to be brought out after the final course; then, dish up the cake!

PORT VALE FC Praise for new midfielders from Adams AS The Valiants prepare themselves for "THE club has created some good competition for the midfield places, and I'm excited about the coming season." Thus, Port Vale FC boss, Mickey Adams, on his signing of a trio of midfielders, after agreeing one-year deals with Michael Brown, Steven Jennings and Michael O'Connor. 37-years-old Brown played in the Premier League for five, different clubs, including Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspurs and Fulham. Jennings, 29, had two spells with Tranmere Rovers, and played over 100 games for Scottish club, Motherwell. 26-years-old O'Connor was released, after helping Rotherham United win promotion to the Championship last season.

NEW midfield signings, Michael Brown (above) and Steve Jennings.

Brown, who played in the top flight with Wigan and Portsmouth, will combine his playing-role with coaching-duties at Vale Park, after being released by Leeds in May.

see when Michael plays, because he's an all-round midfield-player," added Adams. "He can pass, he can score goals, and he's really competitive, as well." The trio of midfielders complements the arrivals of wingers, Bryan Moore and Mark Marshall, and defenders, Ryan McGivern and Colin Daniel. Vale's business came on the same day that the club maintained that a winding-up petition, served by Revenue & Customs over an unpaid tax-bill, would not affect its operations at Vale Park.

FAB-VENT

On Brown and Jennings's signing, Mickey Adams said: "We're delighted to bring both to Vale; they're two vastly-experienced players." O'Connor began his career with Vale's South Cheshire rival, Crewe Alexandra, before a permanent move to Scunthorpe in July, 2009.

Dennis is an 'Ugly Duck' A WARM-HEARTED comedy about lifefriendship and the painful pleasures of supporting Port Vale FC is the first play of the new season at the New Vic Theatre in September. 'Ugly Duck' is written by Deborah McAndrew, the author of 'An August Bank Holiday', which proved a huge hit from the Newcastle theatre-in-theround earlier in the year. Burslem bloke, Dennis Hancock, wouldn't win any beauty contests; he's rapidly declining into middle-age and slowly sinking into the ranks of the long-term unemployment. But, when he answers a newspaperadvertisement for an artist's lifemodel, he finds unexpected friends in troubled, young artist, Kat, and her eccentric parents, Mark and Drina. And, as Kat begins to paint, Dennis finds himself exposed in more ways than one! WARNING: THIS PRODUCTION CONTAINS MALE NUDITY (BARRING A PORT VALE BOBBLE-HAT). Directed by Conrad Nelson, 'Ugly Duck' can be enjoyed from Wednesday, September 3rd, until Saturday, September 13th. Tickets (priced at £12-£21, with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more, £2 off for concessionaries and Under-26s Go Free) can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962 or online at

Standard painting and decorating includes wallpapering, tiling, repainting and plastering, while carpentry involves fitting doors, floors, skirting-boards, fencing, decking, joists, fascias, staircases (and much more!). Plumbing and drainage tasks include carrying out thorough roofing-assessments (essential for older properties and those with slow leaks). Expert roofers can advise on roofcare, and also make repairs to your roof, chimney and guttering. Using experienced professionally-

trained carpenters/ joiners make a real difference to the finish of your property. Traditional carpentry and joinery techniques, using modern materials, ensure a permanent repair to even period properties. Examples of carpentry repair-work undertaken include replacing floorboards and decking, securing staircase-spindles, expoxy resin repairs, replacements and refinishing skirtingboards.

FUNERAL SERVICES Offering Quality & Care Which You Can Trust

For little people & for grownup 'human beans'.... THIS year's Christmas show at the New Vic Theatre, Newcastle, will be Mary Norton's classic family adventure, 'The Borrowers'. The eponymous folk live happily in a perfect, little house under the floorboards of a quiet, old house. But, when young Arrietty gets itchy feet and decides to go exploring, their secret is out and nothing will ever be the same again! Adapted by New Vic Director, Theresa Heskins, the show will be brought to life by the same creative team behind 'Alice in Wonderland', 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians' and 'Peter Pan'. She said: "Bringing this story to the stage will be no mean feat, but, after making Alice shrink and grow in Wonderland,

and chasing 101 spotty dogs across all of England, I'm looking forward to surprising and delighting audiences with out ingenious solutions to the challenges." Featuring magical storytelling, original music and thrilling, live-on-stage effects, 'The Borrowers' will run from Saturdays, November 22nd, to January 15th, 2015. A special deal for school groups comprises tickets priced at £10; free teachers' tickets (one per ten children); on-site parking, and an education programme. Hot Harlem sounds!!

THE service which this family-run business provides is designed to be affordable and reliable at all times. Whether readers are looking for a headstone or cremation memorial, JBM Memorials is able to give you the information which you need to purchase a lasting tribute to the memory of a loved one, thanks to the sensitive approach shown by its friendly staff. JBM Memorials ensures that it can offer quality craftsmanship by employing a small, close-knit team of experienced masons. Cemetery and churchyard authorities almost always have regulations regarding the types of memorials which they will allow. These regulations vary from place to place and, therefore, need to be checked before any choice is made. In addition, certain varieties of stone may be more appropriate in some places than in others, not only for their appearance, but also because of the effect of weather or local conditions. There are several, different factors to be taken into consideration, when choosing a memorial: stone-type; selection of stone-shape and ornamentation; and selection of size and lettering-finish. A reputable memorial mason will advise you on all of these matters. It is, of course, possible to choose a design from a mason's brochure or display; however, if you would prefer something more individual, a reputable memorial mason will be only-toopleased to design it for you. The staff at JBM Memorials are committed to making your choice of memorial as easy and stress-free as possible, and home-visits are available, on request, for people's convenience. They do this by providing the general public with high-quality stone masonry; offering an outstanding level of traditional, hand-carved craftsmanship; and have many headstone memorials on show in the workshop. All types of monumental and stonework are undertaken, wonderfully complemented by cleaning and restoration work and second inscriptions. Using granite, slate, marble, limestone and York stone, the business's range of products also includes pet memorials, crematorium plaques and stone renovation work. Supplying everything from gravestones to individual design memorials, JBM Memorials has two shop-outlets with a showroom and workshop.

ON Wednesday, October 1st, you can step back to 1920s' New York City and through the doors of Harlem's hottest nightclub, The Cotton Club! The spectacular show, 'Swinging at The Cotton Club', celebrating the music, dance songs of the acclaimed venue, takes to the stage of Newcastle's New Vic Theatre, starting at 7.30pm. Featuring one of the swingingest jazz bands on the circuit, Harry Strutter's Hot Rhythm Orchestra, and the world's premier jazz dance company, The Jiving Lindy Hoppers, the show recreates legendary performances by the greatest musicians, singers and dancers of its 1920s and '30s' heyday. 30 | august 2014

"The uninhibited spirit of swing dance in its heyday", enthused The Washington Post, while The Guardian pronounced it "a positive pleasure to behold".
