Robert Powell stars as Hercule Poirot

Robert is supported by a heavyweight cast, including Agatha Christie Theatre Company regulars, Liza Goddard (star of such TV hits as ‘Bergerac’ and the longrunning ‘Give Us A Clue’), Gary Mavers (best-known for playing heart-throb doctor, Andrew Attwood, in ‘Peak Practice’) and Ben Nealon (perhaps bestloved for his role of Captain Forsythe in the ITV drama, ‘Soldier Soldier’).

ONE of Britain’s most instantly recognisable actors is taking on the prized mantle of Agatha Christie’s Belgian sleuth, Hercule Poirot, in a production of her first-ever play, ‘Black Coffee’, which visits Hanley’s Regent Theatre this month. Robert Powell has received multiple awards and a BAFTA nomination for his acclaimed portrayal of Christ in Franco Zefferelli’s TV series, ‘Jesus of Nazareth’.

A quintessential, English country estate is thown into chaos, following the murder of eccentric inventor, Sir Claude Amory, and the theft of his new, earth-shattering formula.

He, then, went on to star in myriad film-hits, including ‘The 39 Steps’, ‘The Four Feathers’ and ‘Shaka Zulu’. His extensive stageperformances include national tours of Alan Bennett’s ‘Single Spies’, Keith Waterhouse’s Jeffrey Barnard is Unwell’, and ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde, before most recently appearing in ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ at The Palace Theatre in the West End.

Arriving at the estate just moments too late, one man immediately senses a potent brew of despair, treachery and deception amid the estate’s occupants: that man is Hercule Poirot! From the pen of the great Dame Christie (who, having sold over two billion books worldwide is only succeeded by the Bible and Shakespeare), Poirot made his debut in her 1920 novel, ‘The Mysterious Affair at Styles’, making his first (and

only) stage-outing in the mistress of murder’s first play, ‘Black Coffee’. The Belgian investigator went on to become one of the world’s most cherished and long-lived fictional characters, appearing in 33 novels, one play and more than 50 short stories, published between 1920 and 1975 (to this day, he remains the only fictitious character to receive a front-page obituary in The New York Times!). His legend has proved ripe for adaptation and Poirot has been portrayed in comics, on radio, film screen and television, by actors, such as Albert Finney, Sir Peter Ustinov, Sir Ian Holm, Alfred Molina and, of course, David Suchet, who played the eponymous hero in the ITV series since 1989, through the entire catalogue of books and dozens of short stories, bidding an emotional farewell at the end of last year, as series 13 concluded with his dramatic demise in Christie’s ‘Curtain’. ‘Black Coffee’ runs from Monday, February 17th, to Saturday, February 22nd, at 7.30pm, with 2.30pm matinee performances on Wednesday and Saturday.
