THE

WELCOME

CM21

HELLO AND WELCOME TO THe april edition of THE CM21 CONNECTION It’s a been a busy month! Actually, it’s not cool to be “busy” any more is it. I’ll rephrase. This month I have been very focused. (Yep, that’s better.) Thanks to some birthday gifts I have been able to tick a couple of things off my “bucket list” - I went to see War of the Worlds and also saw Adele play her first ever concert at the O2. It was good to be focused on making some memories. The work/life balance is so important isn’t it. This month we have something for everyone and I’m delighted to welcome new and returning advertisers: Rapunzel’s Hair Boutique, Cellissima, Harlow Carpets, Spin Doctor, Fraser Beecham and VSF Garage Repairs Ltd. Thanks too, to all of our regular advertisers, without your loyal support this publication would not exist. I’d also like to thank Sawbridgeworth Bowls club and Sawbridgeworth CFVS for their contributions. It’s a pleasure to be able to help. If you would like me to run something on your group or tell the rest of the Town about your event, please get in touch. Remember, the community pages are FREE for local groups - we love highlighting events and encouraging more members for you. Last but definitely not least, I’d like to thank Ange Chan who organised the feature celebrating our local authors, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did! And finally, if you know of a business that would benefit with more local customers, wave a copy the CM21 Connection under their nose and tell them they should be in it! They’ll be so pleased you did! Thank you x Until next time,

Lorraine

Pub & café Walks Explore our lovely countryside and local pubs and cafés for a perfect day...

Spring Flowers & Sculptures The charming village of Perry Green is home to dozens of extraordinary bronze sculptures. This walk gives you a chance to explore the landscape near the Henry Moore Foundation and enjoy some monumental masterpieces as well as buttercup-strewn meadows and woods full of bluebells. Cross the road and follow the public path to the right of Hoglands house, running along the edge of a small wood. Through the trees to your right, you can see the first sculptures. The “Large Figure in a Shelter” gleams coppery-gold from the next clearing. At the end of the trees, head right through a gate. Turn right along the next footpath, following the Hertfordshire Way, then left towards woods and left down the hill with woods to the right and left again along the valley path, with bluebells beside you. Just as you reach a road, turn sharply left back up through a band of trees and over some hilly fields, heading for the “Large Reclining Figure” silhouetted on the horizon. Shortly before you reach this bronze sculpture, rising nine meters off its manmade hill, turn right at a signpost and left between fenced clumps of trees. Go through the gate, across a track and head right towards the “Large Upright Form”, standing by a pond. Keeping the pond on your right, walk through a gate and over a bridge onto a little lane. Turn immediately left along the edge of a stream and follow this path back to the Hoops Inn. LOCATION:

Where do you live? I live just down the road in Newhall, Harlow. I moved there from London in 2014. What’s your favourite local venue? I like the Coach & Horses as it has really good food. What’s your favourite local shop? I love The Range in Edinburgh Way - it has a really good selection of garden and homeware. What do you like best about Sawbridgeworth? It has a great “village” feel, with lots of open spaces. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I like going to the cinema, meeting friends and eating out. I also enjoy going to Spurs but don’t get there as often as I’d like.

my own boss. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? I recently went to my cousin’s wedding and caught up with a lot of family who I’ve not seen for a long time. It reminded me of how important family is and that we should all make more effort to keep in touch. Favourite one liner or silliest thing you’ve overheard? I was in the Pound Shop not long ago and someone asked, “How much is this?”

Children First Could you foster a child? Donna is a newly approved carer with Children First Fostering Agency. We are thrilled to welcome her on board. Donna’s many skills include British Sign Language. Her daughter Elisha is deaf and Donna has communicated with her from a very early age. She introduced us to ‘Signing Sam’ during the fostering panel process, which was a first for us! Donna and her family have a lovely home which has recently been refurbished and extended to enable her to care for the young people who we refer via the various local authorities that we work with. Children First are keen to promote diversity within our carer group and develop and support their personal skills. All of our carers have special skills and we are proud of all that they do. Donna’s approval means she can provide care for 2 children or, if they are siblings, she can accommodate 3 children. If you would like to find out more about becoming a foster carer, please get in touch and together we can make a positive difference. Donna and Elisha

LOCAL Authors In Sawbridgeworth we are very lucky to have an abundance of writing talent, right here on our doorstep. Many of the following author’s work can be found in the relatively new general bookshop on Bell Street, Sawbridge Words, which is run by owner and proprietor Neville Twitchell who starts us off, by telling CM21 how its all been going. “Sawbridge Words opened last August and since then a lot has happened. I have built up stock of both new and second hand titles and now have about 4,000 volumes on a great range of topics. I’ve had a lot of favourable comments from townspeople who are glad to have a bookshop in Sawbridgeworth again, and I am confident of the shop being a long-term success. I’ve held several events over the last few months, including book-signing sessions with local authors. More of these are planned for the future, details of which can be found via our website www.sawbridgewords.com or our Facebook page.” Neville Twitchell

Ange Chan was born in Lancashire, and subsequently lived in South Wales and Cheshire before settling in Sawbridgeworth, where she currently lives with her husband and son. In June 2012, Ange gave up on the corporate world after 26 years, to concentrate on her writing career. Ange’s first full solo collection of poetry “Observations” was released on Amazon in May 2014 to positive reaction. “Perceptions” her second collection, continued and developed those themes further extended into “Directions” which was published in August 2015. All are available in Kindle and paperback editions. Her current poetry volume “Fame; What’s Your

Name?” is about music and musical influences from the 80s. Ange’s poetry has featured in a number of collaborative projects and anthologies, and she has performed her creative work in variety of locations throughout London and Hertfordshire. In May 2015 Ange’s first novel “Two Degrees of Separation” was published, and is available from Amazon. Her second novel “Baby, Can You Hear Me?” will be published in 2016. Ange is an avid purveyor of social media and can be found on Twitter @angechanwriter or Facebook on her AngeChanWriter page. Alternatively her website is www.vodkaangel22.wix.com/vodkaangel22 Chris Lewis lives in Bishops Stortford but was born in Botswana, on a cattle farm. When he was two years old he totally lost his sight. He has lived in England for more than forty years working as a Physiotherapist. Whilst taking a modern literature degree with The Open University he developed an interest in creative writing. Since then he has had three books published. His current publication is “The Scent of Rain”, written under an assumed Afrikaans name of Josef Lewies. The book reflects life on an isolated farm in Botswana, describing the existence of the people and animals, their isolated daily life and the myths and legends of the inhabitants. Although the book largely consists of a number of short stories, it is all held together by a central character, i.e. the country, and the book perfectly captures the distinctive African atmosphere. Saira Hamilton is a chef, cookery teacher and food writer. She is the food columnist for the Herts & Essex Observer newspaper and you can read her blogs at www.sairahamilton.com. by Ange Chan company, Small Aubergine, Saira cooks for private clients and runs guest chef and pop-up restaurant experiences. Originally inspired by her own mother, Saira’s food philosophy is rooted in good home-cooking made with fresh ingredients. Saira is best remembered for her success on TV’s MasterChef in 2013 where she won high praise from the judges. Narrowly finishing fourth, Saira’s was inspired by her MasterChef experience to turn her back on a successful 20 year career in law enforcement and embark on her dream of a new vocation in food. Saira’s first cookbooks were published in February 2016. The ‘Cooking with Saira’ series of books showcase some favourite ingredients. They contain simple, no-nonsense recipes that are packed with flavour and are perfect for family meals or dinner parties. Find out more about Saira and access recipes at www. smallaubergine.com or follow her on social media @SairaHamilton and Facebook as SairaHamiltonChef Prizewinning author Adrienne Tinn was born in Ongar, Essex but spent most of the first twenty years of her life in London. She has written poetry and short stories all her life, and as a teacher produced plays and dramatic productions for children to act. She now lives in Lower Sheering with her photographer husband. Besides being chairperson of the local writing group, Harlow Writers’ Workshop, she is also secretary of two local bridge clubs and plays bridge for Hertfordshire. She has won first prize for a children’s short story in a national magazine as well as prizes in various poetry competitions. She has also been published in a variety of anthologies and magazines in England and abroad. She has presented her poetry at a number of local location and Adrienne also gives presentations at the WI and other clubs. Her two anthologies of

poetry, proceeds of which go to local charities, are ‘With Different Eyes’ and ‘Somewhere’. Jenni Kemp lives in Bishops Stortford with her husband and is the author of “Haunted Bishops Stortford” which was first published in September 2015. Jenni has been collecting ghost stories from Hertfordshire and Essex for the past 23 years, being particularly interested in ghosts and the unexplained, after having experienced poltergeist activity herself at the age of sixteen. Jenni has also written “Ghost Tours of Hertfordshire and Essex”, which is awaiting publication. She is further intending to write about Hertfordshire Murders and Mysteries. Jenni’s life does not revolve around spooks! Following a successful career in finance, she is now a semi-professional artist, and her other interests include Medieval French history, the Tudors and the Stuarts, jazz, classical music, and continental cuisine. Yvonne Marrs moved to the London area at the age of nineteen from her home of Inverness in order to pursue her dream of becoming a published author. Yvonne dreamt up the ‘When The Sax Man Plays’ series after falling in love with saxophone music, and being inspired by Leona Lewis’ dream X Factor win. To throw an ordinary person in an ordinary job, with an extraordinary talent into superstardom is the story behind the series. Currently Yvonne has three fictional series; The ‘When The Sax Man Plays’ series, the ‘Football Crazy’ series and the Aiden Lewis octet. With her early sporting pedigree (Yvonne was a Scottish National Judo player in her teens) it was only natural for Yvonne’s interests to merge. Her fictional books are available to download on Kindle as well as in paperback. More information can be found at Yvonnemarrsauthor.co.uk.

LOCAL Authors By Ange Chan Emma Vandore is a writer and storyteller. Her work includes novels, journalism, non-fiction and academic writing, and she has been published in a variety of UK and overseas publications. In fifteen years of journalism, reporting from over thirty countries on six continents, Emma gathered plenty of writing material. She reported out of Brussels, where she covered the introduction of the euro and the start of its unravelling, and Paris, where she was the only foreigner elected to the board of the Presidential Press Association, before moving to the South East. Her publications include Schizophrenie Francaise, described by Paris Match in 2007 as ‘the book all the presidential candidates should read,’ and Creative France, a commissioned book of 40 innovations made in France (Business France). One of the first researchers to look at the East London cluster dubbed ‘Tech City’, she has written a number of academic papers, including A Tale of Tech City (Centre for London, 2011). She now has her own storytelling and communications consultancy, Kagisha Ltd (www.kagisha.com), focused on technology and education. It helps individual startups,

the organisations who represent them, and business clusters. She is currently working on her third novel which is only slightly delayed by the recent birth of her daughter Grace. www. emmavandore.com Natasha Stride lives in Sawbridgeworth with her family. She currently writes for children and “The Goobie” is her first title, which is aimed at 4-9 year olds. It’s about a small creature who wasn’t accepted because of how he looked. As a child Natasha never imagined that she would see herself published, as she struggled with confidence and found school life hard. She succeeded by stepping out of her comfort zone and with the support of her husband Kevin, and illustrator Ian West, she took the plunge. Natasha started her journey by writing poems in birthday cards and then progressed to reading them out at friend’s weddings and on one occasion, a funeral. More recently Natasha has been visiting schools to promote her work and this has been featured in the local press. She enjoys sharing the message through her work of believing in yourself and not giving up. Facebook page is Natasha Stride - Children’s Author. or via Twitter @goobiebooks

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

LOOK WHAT’S COOKING PORK JAMBALAYA 1 tbsp groundnut oil 100g chorizo sausage, sliced 350g pork loin steaks, cut into chunks 1 onion, peeled and chopped 3 celery stalks, trimmed and chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 2 tsp smoked paprika, plus extra for sprinkling 2 tsp Cajun seasoning 225g easy-cook long grain rice 700ml vegetable stock

COOKED

IN JUST ONE PAN AND ON THE TABLE

IN LESS THAN AN HOUR THIS IS A GREAT MIDWEEK

100g fine green beans, chopped

FAMILY SUPPER.

1 large yellow pepper, deseeded and diced

MIXED GREEN SALAD, IF LIKED.

SERVE WITH GARLIC BREAD OR A

1. Heat 1 tsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the chorizo over a high heat until golden and the fat starts to run. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 2. Add the diced pork to the pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time until browned. Remove and set aside with the chorizo. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion, celery and garlic for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. 3. Stir in the spices and rice and cook, stirring, over a medium heat for 2 minutes then pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Return the pork to the pan and cover and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Stir in the chorizo, green beans and yellow pepper into the pan and cook, uncovered, for a further 6-7 minutes until the rice and vegetables are tender, adding a little more stock if necessary. Serve sprinkled with a little more smoked paprika and freshly ground black pepper.

TIP: You can replace the pork in this recipe with diced chicken breast fillet or boneless thigh fillets. Alternatively use large raw king prawns and add them to the pan in step 4 and cook until pink.
