editor’s note

I

n our fast pace generation it’s rare when we have a moment to stop, breathe, and appreciate our roots. This Redux issue of CLUTCH is to call attention to the cyclical fashion trends America has restored throughout the past century. Our three editorials highlight glamour from the 1920s industrial revolution, vivid colors from the dawn of the comic book era, and athletic inspired trends from an American football tradition. While working on this issue I’ve come to appreciate our country’s vogue by taking a time machine through some of America’s greatest trends both past and present. With the help of my amazing board of directors, local businesses, and Florida State University’s students, CLUTCH was able to bring this revived Americana trends issue to life! Best,

RE ARE YOU REALLY GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR MAKEUP AND COSMETIC SETS?

By Gary Wong

Ever been sucked into buying a makeup palette because of its “great deal” price, only to later discover that countless layers are needed for the color to stick? We understand the appeal of purchasing “value” sets as opposed to top line cosmetics; however, CLUTCH is here to let you in on some secrets that may validate these wallet-denting purchases.

Buying high-end cosmetics can put a dent in your wallet, making sets and “value” palettes sound more appealing. Quality ingredients are expensive to produce and fancy packaging is difficult to manufacture, therefore prices increase. Unfortunately, in order for cosmetic companies to mass-produce palettes and sets without losing money they must use cheap pigments substitutes. At the end of the day, the overall performance of these discounted sets does not compare to the original product.

During the holiday season, many brands produce mini-brush sets to accompany their palette deals. Full-sized brushes are handmade from quality materials, whereas seasonal brushes are manufactured by machines with short life-spans. In addition, shedding and inconsistency in design attribute to their poor execution.

While saving money and purchasing cosmetics in bulk may sound thrifty, there are many cons we overlook. When it comes to cosmetics, investing in quality product will give your face the best look it’s ever had!

Beauty mistakes you’re probably making By Kayla Parker

CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP TOOLS NOT USING SUNBLOCK Sun damage can occur even when you don’t feel the rays. This can lead to premature skin aging, wrinkles, and an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

FIX:

Add sun block to your daily moisturizing routine (some foundations and tinted moisturizers include SPF in them); anything over SPF 15 is recommended since we live in the sunshine state.

GOING TO SLEEP WITH MAKEUP ON

After a late night, collapsing in bed is the only thing left on your checklist, but don’t forget to wash off the night’s makeup. This grease paint creates a barrier that prevents the skin from breathing, forming a breeding ground for acne. Plus, every night slept in makeup ages you 7 days.Yikes!

FIX:

Keep makeup wipes handy on your bedside table.

clutch-spring-kaitlynlayouts-1.indd 19

Would you let a pair of dirty hands stroke your face? (We hope the answer is no.) Not washing your makeup brushes is a big no-no— they hold major bacteria!

FIX:

Baby Shampoo is both cost-efficient and gentle on cosmetic tools. Gently wash your brushes once a week and set flat on a towel to dry.

IT ISN’T TOO EARLY TO HAVE A BEAUTY REGIMEN OR WORRY ABOUT AGING

Inevitably your skin is changing, and so must your derma routine. Believe it or not but science has proven that the proper age to start integrating anti-aging products into your regimen is in your early twenties!

FIX:

Prevention is the best strategy when it comes to maintaining youth. Ideally, your regimen should include a cleanser, treatment product, SPF moisturizer, and a night repair serum.

Smart Fashion: Intelligent fabrics modernize the industry By Madeline Smith

The spontaneous Tallahassee weather never seems to accommodate one’s ideal outfit—we’re either sweating in equator-like layers or freezing under sheer chemises. Imagine at the slightest flurry of icy wind, your fleece jacket suddenly warmed itself—and if your professor (as most do in the cooler temperatures) cranked the heat to a balmy ninety degrees, it cooled you down instantly. Nowadays, these dreams are possible, especially with new developments in textiles for everyday clothes. Smart textiles are not the newest discovery in the fashion world, but as of lately, developers have honed the fabrics to adjust accurately to one’s personal climate. Also known as “e-textiles” and “smart fabrics,” these materials are something out of a sci-fi flick; by sewing conductive wires and integrated circuits into clothing, creators are developing “wearable fabrics with embedded electronics that can collect, store, send and receive information,” according to an article in The New York Times. 28

clutch-spring-kaitlynlayouts-1.indd 42

Soon, the ability of fabric will extend beyond merely covering up; mp3 players and Bluetooth-enabled phones will be implanted, with voice-activated commands provided. The majority of use lies with the military and medical professionals at the moment, and the technology allows the two parties to have instantly accessible health statistics on the wearer, such as heart rate and body temperature. Both soldiers and the sick have a one-year head start on civilians, who should expect the first wave of smart-fabric clothing on the market in mid-2013—from then on, experts say, the demand will only increase. Being chic just got a whole lot more genius!

FASHION & Sustainability CLUTCH MAGAZINE INTERVIEWS TALLAHASSEE’S OWN VERONIQUE GEORGE. Interview by Katie Sapp

CLUTCH: What inspired you to fuse sustainability and fashion?

Veronique: Every year, the fashion industry generates millions of excess fabric. As much as 15 to 20 percent of the fabric used in producing clothing contributes to unnecessary waste, accumulating in landfills because it is less expensive that way. Outsourcing labor, water and energy consumption, and an organization’s carbon footprint also attribute to unnecessary waste generation in the industry. All of these topics, like using organic materials and creating multi-functional pieces are why sustainability must become the guiding principle in the future of fashion .

C: You’re fashion show was a huge hit tell us more about it. V: A lot of people are still learning about what sustainability means and how they can apply it to their lives. As creative director and lead stylist for the reception’s sustainable fashion show, I wanted to demonstrate that fashion can be more sustainable by reusing staple items and shopping at vintage boutiques to create multiple outfits. Reusing clothing items helps to reduce unnecessary waste that may end up in landfills and ultimately generate more greenhouse gases. I had the opportunity to work with brands like Ann Taylor, BCBG, and Banana Republic to show how mainstream clothing can be worn sustainably. I also worked with two local vintage stores, The Collection on Gaines and The Other Side Vintage, to demonstrate how vintage clothing is sustainable. Additionally, I worked with MeTeVa Inc. for make-up and Aveda for hair styling to create sustainable run-way looks by using less products and organic solutions.

spring2012.indd 15

C: What are some ways college students can be more involved with sustainability? V: For students who are just starting to live a more sustainable lifestyle, taking sustainability one step at a time is the key. Make it practical by starting with simple steps like recycling, eating foods that are grown locally, carpooling, or reusing a water bottle made from organic or biodegradable material. Keep in mind the Three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Consider starting your own community garden, composting, eating organic foods, or shopping at your local farmer’s market for groceries.

clutch-spring-kaitlynlayouts-1.indd 46

3/19/12 3:12 AM

How much does it ACTUALLY cost to make a shirt? Not cheap! Plain t-shirts generally go for about $3.50 a piece and 16oz jars of acrylic screen printing ink can cost upwards of 19 dollars. This is why deals usually come with buying in bulk and owning a variety of colors is costly. The mechanical process is different, but it has many similar expenses and steps.

If I wanted to try it out, where do I begin? Buy a silk-screen kit from a crafts store like Michael’s or find one for cheap online. It may use drawing fluid instead of photo emulsion, but works the same. Follow the instructions that come with it, and remember to be very patient and as neat as possible. Try it out on scrap paper and old t-shirts first. Remember to figure out your color layers, and work from there. Practice makes perfect!

Besides t-shirts, what else can you print on?

Anything flat that can hold still. Silk-screening is not fool-proof and in order to deem something a “set” of prints, the collection must be nearly identical, so start with a small surface.

A LOOK BEHIND WHAT MAKES THE DESIGNER TICK Interview by Madeline Smith

hilip Crangi is the ultimate Renaissance man—a collector of taxidermy and oldfashioned books, alumnus of Rhode Island School of Design, winner of the prestigious 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition, and an expert in antiquity. He’s become a hailed name in the fashion industry for his avant-garde jewelry and accessories, most notably with his line, Giles and Brother. The NYC-based collection is a hybrid of eras, combining bits of aged leather, edgy brass and oxidized silver—symbolic of his aesthetic. Born and raised in Boca Raton, Florida, the manicured sheen of the small city was unfulfilling for a young Crangi. “I do what I do in spite of coming from there,” Crangi said. For someone like Crangi, who was—and still is—“on 32

spring2012.indd 20

the hunt for the buried treasure, the hidden compartment, [and] the ancient ruins,” the city was all too new, pristine and synthetic. He chose to follow his own adventure, making jewelry inspired by the past. “Everything I create has something to do with this idea of history,” Crangi said. “It’s about inventing a past for the wearer, and making that item mysterious and hard to place.” Raised by art history enthusiasts, his fascination with bygone times infiltrates his mind while drawing concepts. “I’m compulsive with my connection-making;

3/19/2012 1:28:42 AM

I can’t look at something and not be plotting in my mind its trajectory, what people were doing at the time and what it signified,” Crangi said. This obsessive indulgence, shown in past and current collections Academie, Philip Crangi Collection, and Giles and Brother, strives to give the wearer the power to create a story (their own “historical fiction,” in Crangi’s words), while reflecting current versatility for everyday wear. Melding the two aesthetics, he creates a brilliant new out of the old. His fall/winter 2011 collection, filled with accented gold and hued leather, was inspired by heavy medieval Japanese armor, decorated with lacquered metal plates and silk cords, transformed into a current and wearable classic silhouette. “Sometimes the inspiration and a final product are so far apart that there’s no thread from idea to finished piece—and it was worth showing here because it really described our process,” said Crangi. “Our” refers to the designer’s team: himself and his sister/business partner, Courtney—the namesake behind the Giles and Brother brand. Beginning as a lower-priced collection, the line has grown since Crangi incorporated spring2012.indd 21

Academie to showcase a wider variety of jewelry under one roof, called The Crangi Family Project. Though the collections has broadened, Crangi still implements his core principles when designing a piece. “A charm is really a talisman of a personal memento, and our pieces are about a current moment in our culture—in fashion, in jewelry design[…] and we always find different ways to tell our story,” said Crangi. Looking to the future, Crangi believes Giles and Brother will keep step with the ever-evolving industry. “It’s up to the designer to forecast what’s next, and because [our collection] isn’t radically different from season to season, it has a language that it progresses through,” said Crangi. “I’m happy because we’re going in some unexpected directions in projects right now, so I’m extremely excited.”

Featuring the works of Denise De Lima

It’s time to start incorporating the spring runway colors into our wardrobes and onto our nails. Try experimenting with this season’s popular pastel colors like pistachio, tangerine, and lavender. If you aren’t talented in the nail art department, make an appointment with someone who is; we suggest Envy Salon and Spa’s Denise De Lima, who created these amazing designs. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Denise moved to Tallahassee in 2009. After her transfer to the States, Denise decided to enroll

in beauty school and began a career as a skin care specialist. As much as she enjoyed being an esthetician, she longed for a more creative outlet; this was when she returned to beauty school for a nail license. Today, Denise specializes in gel polish manicures, using brands such as Gelish and Shellac; she does not do acrylic nails. Denise says she finds inspiration by flipping through the pages of NAILPRO Magazine and by studying today’s fashion. Here are a couple designs Denise created for our spring issue!

If you would like to schedule an appointment with Denise, call Envy Salon and Spa, located on the corner of N. Monroe Street and E. 3rd Avenue.

Shades of

Spring By Elizabeth Redmond

With color dominating the spring 2012 fashion shows, it is no surprise that beauty trends are following close behind. Bright neon hues and muted pastels have taken over the drab autumn color scheme. In beauty, color is always a must-have for spring. Make a statement with neon matte lip colors. A bold lip can instantly give you a whiter smile, as well as brighten your complexion. But, why should your lips have all the fun? Pastel eyelids are one of the hottest beauty trends for spring 2012. Swoop some lilac eye shadow over your lids and apply mascara. Keep the eyeliner to a minimum, considering you want to make the color pop. The more daring option to add color is dying your hair! Pigmented hair was exceptionally popular on runway shows from the likes of Narciso Rodriguez,

Mulberry, and Thakoon. From neon green tresses to strands of orange locks, this quirky trend is certainly not for the meek. If dying your hair is out of the question, electric nail colors are sure to compliment any of these top spring beauty trends. Look for shades such as tangerine, coral, and chartreuse. This season, it is all about playing with color and not being afraid to incorporate it into your beauty regimen. There is a beauty trend that suits everyone’s comfort level this season. Your face is virtually a blank canvas for you to let your imagination run wild. So, break away from your winter beauty rut and amp up the color this spring!

nightlife style with ease By Kelly Murphy

Classy. Elegant. Sexy. Stunning.

How do females attain these attributes in a single nocturnal excursion? As women, we have learned early that comfort doesn’t always come with looking good, but there’s a difference between killing your feet in 5-inch stilettos and wearing a getup with confidence. Selecting the perfect outfit might be one of the most difficult decisions while getting ready for a night out. It’s important to keep in mind that if you show off one asset, you should conceal another. Skintight threads aren’t always the best option, and with that being said, be comfortable in what you wear. The truth is, looser alternatives make dancing effortless. No one wants to worry about wardrobe malfunctions all night!

Radiant shades are fantastic for spring apparel. Brilliant teals, bold reds, glowing yellows, and citrus oranges will surely brighten up the dark club. Make sure you don’t go overboard on your accessories selection. Huge bags are impractical; small purses, clutches, and satchels are more ideal. As for jewelry, every girl needs some sparkle, but keep it classic with studs and a flattering necklace.

Catwalk-to-Closet As a haute couture junkie with an H&M budget, I empathize with those who are seemingly crushed with yearning after every runway season. Despite endless longing for the actual star-printed sheer blouse from the Dolce & Gabbana Fall/

By Madeline Smith

Winter 2011 show, there exists similar and equally beautiful blouses from boutiques and vintage stores in the Tallahassee area. Most runway trends, with a little digging, can be found locally or even in the depths of your own closet.

Mermaid Motifs

A strand of the classic nautical look was revived by designers like Versace and Holly Fulton. With emphasis on pastels—and most notably Mediterranean blues—it’s easy to dig up some sea-inspired pieces (just please, no puka shells) to pair with sheer basics.

Daisy Lady

Gone are the days of micro-sized florals. Largerthan-life flower patterns are everywhere, namely daisyprints; Topshop’s website in particular has a fantastic base of neo-florals to scavenge. Keep the color to a minimum to match with neutrals.

Scarf Chic

Root around thrift stores and mom’s closet to find eclectic shawls, or tie a scarf around your neck for a retro accessory! This trend extends to handbags; tie one onto your tote for extra oomph.

Funky Fresh Retro sunglasses- From classic cat-eye’s to oversized neon frames, retro sunglasses are all the rage this spring. Step out of your comfort zone when it comes to your glasses. Play with colored lenses and unique shapes. These funky sunglasses will surely complete any outfit.

Crystal Clear Lucite (clear) accessories -Are a fresh and modern twist on the typical spring jewelry trends. Stack chunky lucite bangles against a neon ensemble or layer a transparent necklace over your favorite LBD. These accessories essentially match with everything, leaving you with a hassle-free look!

Concrete Jungle Tribal accessories- The bolder the better! This spring, tribal accessories are your “go-to” for statement jewelry. Look for exotic stones, natural wood pieces, and earthy color pallets. Add some culture to your look this spring and you’ll find yourself in the heart of the jungle.

Fall basics meet spring radiance By Elizabeth Redmond

Spring forward into a new wardrobe and revamp your closet with this season’s hottest hues. Pantone announced “Tangerine Tango” as the it color for spring 2012. This zesty shade fits seamlessly into the spring color palette, which is chock full of vibrant and lively shades straight from the spectrum. It’s time to wake up your dreary fall collection, pairing neon brights with autumn neutrals. Look for vivid tones like turquoise, fuchsia, tangerine, and calmer citrines and honeysuckles; these dramatic pigments can be tempered with more neutral grey, ivory, navy blue, and white pieces from autumn.

Imagine a camel maxi skirt paired with a lemon blouse or a grey blazer, draped over a cobalt mini dress to break up the intensity. C’est chic! If you’re hesitant about wearing neons, accessories are more subtle, but still add that extra glow. Your quiet staples will team up with shrieking embellishments, thanks to some brilliant arm candy, like a lime colored clutch or magenta timepiece. Shoe queens, have no fear! Step out in style with some electric indigo pumps. Spring cleaning will be a cinch now that you’ve saved some of your basics, while incorporating scintillating colors.

fur, fringe & MATERIALS USED THROUGHOUT THE AGES By Lauren Young

Three unconventionally classic materials that have been repeated since our historic forefathers are fur, fringe, and feathers. Fur is considered to be one of the earliest materials used for clothing; its history can be traced all the way back to the Neanderthals! Its warmth and durability makes fur a staple in most northerner’s closets, however, some refuse to wear fur because of their moral beliefs and its discerned cruelty to animals. A compromise to this problem may be a trend from last season, faux fur.

Some highlighted fashion trends from over the past century include fringe, from the iconic 1920s flapper girl. The 1920s was the first decade women abandoned their traditionally restricting fashion and embraced a more comfortable modern look. Pioneer women were not afraid show a little leg and shake their fringe in speakeasies. The late 1960s was the inception of the androgynous hippie movement. In this decade, men and women alike sported fringed buck-skin vests and headbands with attached feathers. Glam rock fashion from the 1970s inspired men and women to wear feathered boas over their glittered ensembles. Also, vintage 1930s and 40s fur jackets and peacock feathered hats were trends. Today’s fashionista can commemorate our ancestors by incorporating a feather, fringe, or some fur into their everyday outfits. Try thrifting a fur jacket, buy a boho inspired fringe purse, or add feather extensions to your hair. Whether you mimic past trends or design your own, fur, fringe, and feathers will be used for many more generations.

Life’s A Beach A guide to beach day trips near Tallahassee. By Jana Kirn

Moving to Tallahassee is exciting and allows a sense of freedom, but what many do not realize until arrival is the city is completely landlocked. We don’t have to miss our coastal hometowns; just outside of Seminole country

are plenty of beautiful beaches. Take a quick trip or make a day out of it—this guide will fill you in on some of North Florida’s most beautiful but forgotten beaches.

Where: Alligator Point If looking for a beach where sea birds are your only neighbors, Alligator Point is a relaxing and convenient option. Located about 45 minutes southwest of Tallahassee, it’s home to a small and simple beach community and Bald Point State Park.

Eats: Angelo and Son’s Seafood Restaurant

Try anything off their oyster menu; everything is fresh and delicious.

Where: St. George Island St. George Island is in the heart of Florida’s Forgotten Coast. This 28 mile-long island is home to some of the most expensive beach properties on the Gulf of Mexico, perfect for sightseeing. You can also find many local shops and restaurants on the main drag of the island and a charming lighthouse open to the public. This paradise is a little under two hours south of town.

Eats: Blue Parrot Oceanfront Café This spot has the ingredients for a good time: an awesome location, great seafood, and a stocked tiki bar.

Where: Indian Pass Beach Capturing the essence of “Old Florida,” Indian Pass is 8 miles south of Port St. Joe. Home to many sport fisherman, locally caught oysters are famous to this secluded coast.

Eats: Indian Pass Raw Bar Family owned and grown, this oyster bar is an absolute legend. The relaxed atmosphere encourages cracking open a cold one and ordering a plate of famous baked oysters.

If you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to let it go.

An item going unnoticed for that length of time probably has little or no relevance in your wardrobe. If you’re hesitant, remember, the odds of wearing it again are slim.

2

Keep the classics. There are few essentials in a woman’s wardrobe—the perfect white blouse, a chic LBD, and a simple blazer. These staples are always a go-to piece when you’re in a fashion slump.

3

Create a yes, maybe, and no pile. To be fully effective, do this quickly. Your gut reaction is the most accurate. As for the maybes, come back to them once the entire process is over to make the final cut.

4

If it doesn’t fit, get rid of it. Ill-fitted garments are never

flattering; as much as we would love those pieces to fit again, it’s better to let them go.

5

Organize your clothes in an easy to find, easy to maintain way. When all is said

and done, rearrange your closet in a method that suits you. Try color coordinating or organizing by type.

How to make your own

RAINBOW CAKE By Lindsay Shores

Quick and easy steps to turn any vanilla cake into a whirlwind of color and surprise.

Getting Started: Grab a simple vanilla box cake mix and some food coloring (either tradition or neon, depending on your desired results) from the grocery store. Set up a few bowls and spoons from your kitchen to divide the batter, and begin mixing the cake. Divide the batter into the bowls, gradually putting less in each bowl. Your first bowl should hold the most while your last should hold the least.

Put the food coloring into the bowls depending on what colors you want in your cake.

Now the fun part: pour your colors into the cake tin, starting with the bowl with the most batter and so on. Don’t stir any of the colors or worry about them bleeding into each other, they’ll stay separate while cooking. 73

EASY, BREEZY, BEAUTIFUL, COVER… GUY? Beauty tips every guy can use! By Gary Wong

Men usually don’t think in depth about which products are right for their skin. The fact is that there are few differences between male and female products aside from the packaging; skin care is universal. Guys need to start and end their day with a gentle yet effective cleanser. To break through the day’s grease and grime we suggest Clinique’s facial soap.

Because men spend a great amount of their time outdoors they are exposed to the sun, wind, and pollution; unfortunately, these factors deteriorate their skin’s cell health and turnover rate. To combat these environmental conditions advise your man to use a detoxifying SPF moisturizer everyday for protection.

Skin has a natural cycle of shedding dead cells. Exfoliation buffs away these dead cells, clears pores, and boosts the effects of your moisturizer. A product CLUTCH trusts is the Clarisonic, a unisex tool that improves the skin’s appearance instantly. Brands that specialize in men’s skin care include: Jack Black, Anthony Logistics, Dr. Brandt, Origins, Clinique, Lab Series, and Keihls.

Remember, your skin changes with the seasons. Don’t be afraid to visit a counter for answers to all your questions about skin care.

GYM ATTIRE How guys can look their hottest, rather than their sweatiest. By Carlos Kempff

Don’t sweat! Or at least appear as a sweaty mess. Thanks to modern technology, its now possible to stay dry throughout your regimen. Trade in your makeshift cut-off tees for fitted dry-fit t-shirts from companies like Nike, Adidas, Puma, or Under Armour. As for bottoms, don’t hesitate to show a little more leg than you’re used to. We suggest an athletic short that hits

Forget about wearing sweatpants and a hoodie on a colder day. Try wearing a pair of track pants and jacket for a fitted look instead.

Interview by Jessie Militare

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY? I can thank my mom for my initial interest in photography. Since getting my hands on my own camera I’ve been hooked and intend to make a career out of it. I’m inspired by the biggest and best in the industry who have figured out how to follow their passion without becoming starving artists. My current job with The Custom Family has brought me closer to the ‘biggest and best’ such as, Mario Testino, David LaChapelle, Mark Seliger, and others. These connections have ignited my already burning desire to get myself on their level. YOU’VE WORKED AT THE CUSTOM FAMILY, A NEW YORK PRODUCTION COMPANY FOR BIG-TIME PHOTO SHOOTS FOR A WHILE NOW. WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE THERE SO FAR?

Becoming an intern for The Custom Family has been one of the most serendipitous and eye-opening events of my life. I am currently living a double life; I’m taking a full FSU course load while flying to New York and California whenever I’m needed on a job. The Custom Family is teaching me the business, and I would have to say the most rewarding part of the job is being able to sit here right now and confidently say I know exactly what I want to do with my life. 80

WHAT’S YOUR SHOPPING GUILTY PLEASURE? Denim shirts. I love denim shirts. You can never have too many. Unless you have more than ten. Then you definitely have too many denim shirts. WHAT SONG LYRIC BEST DESCRIBES YOU?

YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN THREE WORDS. Clean Cut Mess.

WHO IS REALLY STYLIN’ IN THE MEDIA RIGHT NOW AND WHY? Janelle Monae is a class act. I love her look. Bowties on girls are unstoppable, I suggest that each and every one of you go get yourself one.

With the arrival of spring guys will slip into lighter footwear. Here are a few closed toe options for the warm weather ahead:

men’s shoe trends to wear this spring By Ryan Milejczak

Loafers are the perfect casual shoe with plenty of class. They slip on and off with ease and can be worn with an array of looks. Loafers can be differentiated from moccasins because of their signature top tassel.

clutch-spring-kaitlynlayouts-1.indd 28

Close cousins of loafers, boat shoes are a college staple, and for good reason. These kicks are extremely versatile, match with almost anything, and are comfortable for walking across campus.

Also known as “brogues,” oxfords are a combination of sophistication and swanky ‘tude. Originally from the Scottish Highlands, wingtip oxfords have evolved into a mainstream shoe, wearable with suits to jeans, and everything in between. 81

By Jessica Militare

THE NEWEST GEM IN MIDTOWN

Tucked away in darling Midtown, Paisley Cafe is making waves with its slew of homemade delicacies, crafted with the highest quality ingredients, and most of all, love. Using fine local produce and teas, Tupelo honey, Florida cane sugar, agave nectar and fresh Tribeca Oven bread shipped straight from New York, its goal is to foster a delectably healthy eatery made from the best stuff around. At Paisley, less is more. Priding itself on minimal food waste and recycling, seven ingredients or less is the concept for all of its creations, and cooking with no harmful additives like high fructose corn syrup, you know what’s hitting your palette is real. Patrons are faced with a luscious garden as they walk up, scattered with wrought iron tables for those who wish to dine outdoors. Entering the main dwelling of goodness, smells of southern comfort food waft throughout the room, and tranquil lighting embraces the customer into a rustic world. Tables made of antique heart pine doors adorned with charming carnations, drawer-like counters ornamented with 96

spring2012.indd 56

Victorian-esque door knobs that serve as convenient purse holders, and a lengthy copper bar make for a modern country atmosphere with a pinch of vintage. “I want it to be a peaceful, relaxing environment,” said owner Kiersten Worrell. “There’s limited cell phone service, which makes you focus on the food in front of you instead of the world around you.” As if lightning struck, the former private banker decided one day to open a cafe, and wrote her entire menu that night. Simple in presentation, yet utterly mouthwatering, the Paisley comestibles are something out of this world. Serving eclectic breakfast, sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts, there’s a savory luxury for every taste bud. Start the day with a petite, but indulgent breakfast that will have you finger-licking for more. This is not your greasy IHOP folks; picture a sampler of cheddar and thyme biscuits with sweet apple butter and preserves on the side, blueberry mini scones made with wild berries from Maine, and a side of fluffy twice-baked Gouda grits fused with

smoked sausage (from her family’s smokehouse in Mariana, Fl), and Granny Smith apples. Everything on the menu is baked and made to order, and no stoves are used, which means the food is low in fat (even the meat is rendered to drain fatty toxins out!). For lunch, think chicken salad with a twist — chunky and creamy between slices of Genoa salami, garnished with toasted almonds on a flaky croissant; a pleasant surprise hits your taste buds with a blanket of cherry-pomegranate preserves and a sliver of Dijon mustard. Each bite has you discovering a different flavor; the meal is a relishing adventure. Add a cup of smooth lobster bisque with artichoke as a delicate side. Veggie lovers are in for a real treat — roasted artichoke hearts, red and yellow bell peppers, shallots and garlic with the choice of provolone or rich horseradish cheddar (the latter is “stupid good” as Kiersten would say), on a fresh French baguette. Homemade buttermilk ranch and honey-tarragon mustard go perfect for dipping purposes. “I don’t load the plate with chips and salad and all that,” said Worrell. “I’m secure enough in the

spring2012.indd 57

product that it can stand alone.” Lastly, dessert never goes ignored. All made in-house, the buttermilk pie boasts a subtle melt-in-your-mouth lemon zest, and for chocolate fiends, the Nutella bread pudding made with crisp croissants and the moist brownie stuffed with Ghirardelli Chocolate and Oreo can simply be put as divine. Worrell’s simplistic nature goes way back. Her dearest grandma, Ruby Lee, made her delicious hoecakes as a child with only four bits: corn meal, boiling water and oil, with a whip of butter on top. With little money but a lot of love, she was able to provide Kiersten with the best kind of food, from the heart. Family has been a guiding staple in the development of Paisley, with a collective effort from her loved ones. Paisley crosses all channels, where European meets southern fusion for some stupendous home cooking. “It’s love on a plate,” said Worrell.

BEST PLACES TO GET ORGANIC FOODS IN TALLAHASSEE

With our favorite eat outs, like Mellow Mushroom, Momo’s, and Chipotle constantly in the back of our minds, it’s difficult to consider organic foods. We all know how hard it is to get in that mindset, especially on those late Friday nights. Luckily, the 850 area is loaded with food markets that can provide us with the ideal and surprisingly delicious diet. Why organic? Organic foods are grown with natural fertilizers that feed the soil

Earth Fare 2425 Apalachee Pkwy Earth Fare’s philosophy is that the food they sell is as close to the ground as it gets, which means they have high standards for what they put on their shelves. They believe that your favorite foods can still be enjoyed without the typical unhealthy ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, artificial (trans)fats, colors, sweeteners, and flavors, antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones, and bleached or bromated flour. “Choosing organic is an easy and affordable way for you to invest in the health and future of yourself, your children, and your planet. Earth Fare is here to help!”

and plants; only beneficial insects and birds are kept around the plants instead of using insecticides. Crop rotation and hand weeding are used to manage weeds instead of herbicides. Animals are given only organic feed and are allowed to access to the outdoors. Methods like rotational grazing, a balanced diet, and clean housing are used instead of antibiotics and growth hormones to minimize disease.

Publix GreenWise Market

Publix Supermarket that we all know and love is going green. On top of their efforts to minimize the use of plastic bags by selling reusable tote bags, they have created a GreenWise section to meet the people’s growing needs for a healthier lifestyle. They have started to shift their outlook to be more natural and less processed by selling foods that are minimally processed and avoid the use of chemicals, added growth hormones, synthetic antibiotics, steroids, pesticides, or fertilizers and are all-natural with no GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Every product sold in the Publix GreenWise Market is either all natural, organic, or earthfriendly… so now shopping really is a pleasure!

New Leaf Market “sees a world in which humans live in harmony with their environment and each other.” They provide healthy, tasty foods while keeping the people and environment their first priority. They believe they are taking on a problem that will lead to a healthier future generation by means of offering wholesome foods and educating the community about their products. 98
