Clubs WA CEO Karen Giles On Saturday 17th June, we celebrated the 11th anniversary of our industry’s night of nights.

Since the inception of the Clubs WA Industry Awards for Excellence program, the awards have brought our licensed and community clubs together to celebrate our industry’s achievements and recognise our central role at the heart of WA society.

In the 11 years since our first gala event, we have seen many individual sporting codes introduce their own programs to celebrate achievements within specific fields, but it was wonderful to see everyone come together to celebrate the collective achievements of this vibrant industry.

Thank you to all the clubs who attended our annual WA Club Industry Gala Ball, for your involvement in this program and your support of our industry. Many of the clubs who participated in the 2017 program, also nominated for the inaugural event those many moons ago, and it has been a great pleasure watching those clubs grow and evolve. Eleven years on, it was fulfilling to see the event so supported by our industry - with another packed out venue.

A big thank you to the Clubs WA State Council and team, including the wonderful Rosanna Dean who worked tirelessly to organise this event. Now that the event is finished, we’ll be sad to see Rosanna go - however we know she will continue to do amazing work for other lucky organisations.

It has been tough times for our industry, with changing demographics and a cultural shift in sport and socialising. However, as an industry we will continue to work together to ensure our long term sustainability.

The annual WA Club Industry Gala Ball gave us an opportunity to come together to celebrate all that is the WA Club Movement.

This annual gala event and awards night is Western Australia’s premier club industry awards, and being named a finalist or winner is a great achievement and one that you and your club should be proud of.

As the industry association for WA clubs, the sole purpose of Clubs WA is to support and represent this fantastic industry. This 2017 event was made even more special as we celebrated 60 years of Clubs WA. On behalf of Clubs WA, it has been a pleasure serving the club industry for the past 60 years, and we look forward to what is to come.

Club Matters Community Sporting and Recreation (CSRFF) Small Grants Recipients

Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray has announced that 28 projects will receive $641,458 in funding towards community projects. Tennis court upgrades, floodlights, cricket pitches and changerooms are just some of the projects which will benefit from the latest round of Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) Small Grants.

Some of the $641,458 allocated in this Small Grants round has gone to: • Applecross Cricket Club ($40,000) - new changerooms and toilets; • Wembley Downs Tennis Club ($17,607) floodlighting for four courts; • Carnamah Netball Club ($8,666) resurfacing two netball courts; and • Shire of Goomalling ($44,567) - irrigation and re-turfing.

The next round opens on July 1, 2017 and closes on August 31 2017. The Annual and Forward Planning round of CSRFF is currently open and closes on September 29, 2017. Recipients of this round can be found on the Department of Sport & Recreation website.

Clubs WA Industry Awards for Excellence Winners Announced Congratulations to each of this year’s Clubs WA Industry Awards for Excellence finalists and winners. More than 430 guests joined the 40 winners at Western Australia’s annual club industry gala ball on Saturday 17 June at Crown Perth.

Don’t forget to lodge your information Statement

Associations are reminded that information statements are required to be lodged with Consumer Protection within 6 months after the end of your financial year. The information statement is vital in demonstrating to Consumer Protection that your association is active and meeting its legal responsibilities. If your financial year ends 30 June, please lodge your 2017 statement through AssociationsOnline before 31 December 2017.

Nominations are now open for the 2017 National Disability Awards

Have you, your workplace or someone you know improved the lives of Australians with disability?

The 2017 National Disability Awards will be held on International Day of People with Disability, 3 December 2017.

The Awards are the Australian Government’s main celebration of International Day of People with Disability, aiming to honour and recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals, teams and organisations that have improved the lives of Australians with disability and contributed to increased recognition of equality and human rights for all Australians.

Recfishing licence fees increase for the first time in seven years

Increase to National Minimum Wage for 2017-2018

Licences are required in recreational fishing for rock lobster, abalone and marron, when fishing with a net or from a boat, and also for fresh water angling in the South-West. The new fee for each of those licences will be $45. Fishing from a boat licence will cost $35.

The new wage rates schedule has been distributed directly to member clubs who subscribe to Clubs WA Workplace Relations Service.

As part of the State Government’s review of fees and charges, recreational fishing licence fees will go up by $5 from July 8, 2017.

Does your club need help preparing Harm Minimisation documents?

The Liquor Control Act 1988 plays a significant role in contributing to the minimisation of the harm caused to people through the consumption of alcohol.

To support the objectives set out in the Act, the Director of Liquor Licensing constructed policy to assist licensees apply harm-minimisation principles in their venues.

Such policies should detail how liquor will be sold and consumed in a responsible manner, and that harm or ill-health caused to people or any group of people, due to the use of liquor will be minimised.

Licensed clubs are required to have the following documents on premise and available for inspection: 1. House Management Policy 2. Code of Conduct 3. Management Plan

The Fair Work Commission has announced the National Minimum Wage and Modern Award wages will increase by 3.3 percent for 2017/2018. The increase takes effect from the first full pay period after 1 July 2017.

New Government Amalgamations

On 1 July 2017, the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor will amalgamate with the Departments of Sport and Recreation, Culture and the Arts, and Local Government and Communities to form the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. In the transition period, access will still be available via www.rgl.wa.gov.au.

The departments of Commerce and Mines and Petroleum will amalgamate on 1 July 2017, forming the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. Again, during the transition phase access will be available through www.commerce.wa.gov.au/consumerprotection/associations-and-clubs.

Clubs WA will keep member clubs advised of updates as they occur.

Footy Club Equipment Manager’s “Kickback.”

We’re a small, local AFL club* and we don’t have a huge budget. In fact we seem to struggle a bit. So eventually we decided that we needed to have an audit done, to see where all the money was going, and see if we could maybe streamline our fundraising activities by concentrating on the ones that work.

The process was easy and we found out quickly what works for us and what doesn’t. But the surprise was just how much we were spending on game balls - and they are expensive! Well, it turned out that the equipment manager was “retiring” game balls after only a couple of games, and taking a few here and there to sell on Gumtree. He figured it was just compensation for his volunteer work.

Needless to say, we have a new equipment manager, a reduced game ball budget and a commitment to an audit, or at least a financial audit, every year. Who knows what we’ll find next year! *This is a hypothetical case designed to illustrate the value of having a financial Review conducted.

Chefs’ Masterclass Hosted by Stoddart In celebration of the 2017 WA’s Best Club Chef Competition, celebrity chef Stephen Clarke from Clarke’s of North Beach, in conjunction with STODDART treated Clubs WA Chef Competition participants to an unforgettable chef’s masterclass featuring a couple of Stephen’s renowned signature dishes.
