Tonight, Club Kaibigan proudly presents its 36th Pilipino Cultural Night. While celebrating the success of Club Kaibigan and our rich Filipino culture, one can sense the positive spirit through its members. Before we enjoy the evening, let's take a journey through our origins. In the fall of 1984, a group of students at Whitney High School came together and established an organization known as "Club Kaibigan". In Tagalog, this means "Club of Friends". These students wished to share their cultures with their school and community. Today, the Filipino Community comprises the largest Asian Pacific group in America, yet very little is known about the Filipino people and their contributions to society. They total to over two-million nationwide, as well as 16% of the population in Cerritos.
Club Kaibigan's mission is to create a greater cultural awareness and understanding of our vibrant culture and customs. We want to dispel any negative stereotypes of Filipinos and replace them with positive images, especially those of our youth. Unity and friendship are what Club Kaibigan are all about. They're the foundation of our Dance Troupe. The Dance Troupe was established for its members to unite under a common goal: to preserve and share Filipino culture. Every year, the dance troupe performs at schools throughout the southland and at many community and civic functions.
Over the past decade, the members of Club Kaibigan have earned their reputation as youth leaders and role models in the community. In recent years, we have expanded our membership to students from all over the ABC Unified School District within middle and high school.
As one of the strongest and most active youth organizations in Southern California, Club Kaibigan holds cultural workshops, picnics, and get-togethers. Aside from working with its own members, Club Kaibigan has communicated with Filipino state union at colleges throughout the years. It has become a tradition for members who have graduated to continue their success and involvement in colleges and universities across the nation. With each new year, the organization progresses and encourages alumni to return and to not forget their roots.
This night is a celebration of our culture, history, and pride. It is the accumulation of numerous hours of planning and practicing that these students have devoted. Their dedication and hard work is a testament to the continuing spirit that has kept Club Kaibigan going.
PCN is a rare and special opportunity for parents, students, alumni, and local leaders to come together as one to celebrate the future of our community. We have come a long way since our first meeting, bake sales, car washes, and cultural nights decades ago. Tonight, may the Filipino community feel assured that our future as united people will be bright. The Pinoy spirit, young and old, is alive and well. Mabuhay Club Kaibigan!
Magandang gabi sa inyong lahat! After months of dedication and preparation from all of our members, it is my honor and privilege to welcome you to Club Kaibigan’s Thirty-fifth Annual Pilipino Cultural Night.
In 1981, a group of Filipino-American students at Whitney High School attempted to create a Filipino Cultural club, and were met with prejudice and adversity. It would take three years or this dream to finally be achieved. In 1984, the Whitney High School Filipino club was founded by Mark Pulido, later changing its name to “Club Kaibigan” in 1986.
From our early days, Club Kaibigan has continued to grow and thrive in a diverse community. We continue to strive to spread our culture amongst our peers and welcome all who come to learn more about who we are. Our club is proud of our reputation as a family and the support we are able to provide for one another. Club Kaibigan continually strives to instill a sense of cultural awareness among the youth through song and dance, and will continue to promote the unity of the Filipino-American youth for years to come.
This year’s PCN, titled “Ilawan”, is dedicated to all those involved in making these 36 years of PCN possible. This not only includes alumni, but all the parents, organizations, and faculty that have been supportive of our cause. We are forever grateful for the support of our community and hope to present this show as a small token of thanks. Tonight, we not only look back on the culture from which we came from, but also our present, living in an American society.

Immediately after PCN 35: “Magdiwang”, the road to PCN 36 began. On June 12, 2022, Club Kaibigan had a picnic at Liberty Park where the 2022-2023 cabinet was announced. Raiche Gutierrez and Jaica Maniwang became the new PCN directors for the 36th annual Pilipino Cultural Night, however, this journey would not have been possible without the help of the entire cabby and their supporters.
Summer 2022 was busy, to say the least. Before the new school year had even begun, the entire PCN was essentially already planned. Club Kaibigan’s cabinet met multiple times throughout July and August to discuss possible themes, costumes, and dances for the long awaited show. During Cabinet Retreat, the title of the show and synopsis of skit was revealed to the entire cabinet by the PCN Directors. Ilawan, meaning “to illuminate” in Tagalog, would be the name of the first PCN in the MAC Auditorium since March 7, 2020– the weekend before the world shut down. The title was fitting, considering the fact that after three years without a real PCN, Ilawan would emerge from the darkness and revive Club Kaibigan’s light.
On PCN Watching Day, Cabinet watched numerous traditional Filipino dances from each of the major suites: Mountain, Muslim, Maria Clara, Regional, and Rural, debating on how they would narrow down the dances to our final list. After hours of discussion, they had finally decided on 11 dances that they felt best reflected the story of Ilawan. That same night, each cabinet member chose which dance they would teach and each senior claimed solos for their final PCN. For the next few months, Raiche, Jaica, and Koa (Technical Director) collaborated to write the PCN script as the rest of the cabinet began to learn their dances, make props, and gather costumes.
On October 22, 2022, PCN season officially began as over 150 middle and high schoolers from across the district flocked to Cerritos Park East to eagerly sign up for Pilipino Cultural Night. The senior cabby members held up signs that spelled out “ILAWAN” to reveal the name of the show to the people who had just signed up for PCN. Whether it was their first PCN or their last PCN, the
camaraderie and energy that night was memorable as people ate Filipino food together, played games, and bonded with one another.
Three months passed between PCN Picnic and the first Saturday Practice, but nevertheless, Cabinet was hard at work planning PCN in the meantime. The PCN Directors, along with the Dance Troupe Coordinators, sorted everyone into dances and all the dance teachers learned their individual dances so that when the final roster was announced, they would be ready to meet their dancers and practice with them. In the meantime, the auditorium was booked, budgets were made, the merch was designed, and so much more.
For two months, the cast practiced every Saturday at Frontier Park and Cerritos Library, learning the dances in preparation for the big day. Run-throughs were held to simulate what the order of performances would be like, costumes were fitted, props were utilized, and the dancers familiarized themselves with the music Rondalla (the live band) played.
On March 11, Dress Rehearsal was held inside of the MAC Auditorium, which gave everyone a taste of what the day of PCN would actually be like. Dancers went all-out, ensuring that they were prepared for an audience to see the show. The stage was brightened with lights to illuminate our dancers in their traditional costumes, just as the PCN title suggests. For an entire week, the cast practiced for hours on end for “Hell Week”. Although it was tiring, each day brought all the dances closer to perfection. On the night before the show, the final practice culminated with the 12th graders saying their long-awaited senior speeches. Although it was emotional, the speeches brought the cast closer together, allowing them to form a stronger connection over their love for the Filipino culture and the people they met through PCN.
And now here we are today, the day of PCN 36. As this labor of love is finally performed on stage, Club Kaibigan’s cabinet would like to thank each and every one of you for embarking on this journey with us. This show would not be possible without each and everyone of you dedicating your blood, sweat, and tears into PCN. We sincerely hope that this Pilipino Cultural Night exceeds your expectations and inspires you to continue participating in PCN each year. We hope the memories you’ve made and the kaibigans you’ve made will last a lifetime. Mabuhay Club Kaibigan!

Pasigin came from the word Pasig, referring to the name of the river. The dance interprets and takes inspiration from the life of the fishermen. A fisherman is trying to catch bangus, shrimp, and sugpo with the use of a sibot (fishnet), not knowing it has a big hole in it, giving him a difficult time. The movements of the girls imitate those of the bangus, shrimps and sugpo.

Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated during the Spanish colonial era. This dance involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance.

The word pandanggo comes from the Spanish fandango, a lively stepping and clapping dance in 3/4 time. Features dancers balancing candles in their hands and on their head. Imitates the act of villagefolk lighting candles to welcome fishermen back home, spending their time drinking wine, dancing, swinging and circling.

Sayaw sa Bangko is performed on top of a narrow bench. Dancers need good balance as they go through a series of movements that include some impressive acrobatics. This dance traces its roots back to the areas of Pangapisan, Lingayen and Pangasinan.

Meaning “double step” in Spanish, Paso Doble has an upbeat rhythm that was introduced and made popular in the Philippines by Spaniards. Adding their own lively steps and cheerful melodies, Filipinos played their own versions of Paso Doble for ballroom dancing and passengers on boats. It can be performed as a flirtatious courting dance, with suitors trying to win the hands of young ladies.

La Jota Manileña is a dance heavily influenced by the Spanish and its name is inspired by the name of the capital of the Philippines, Manila. The La Jota Manileña is a Filipino adaptation of Castilian Jota, a dance with bamboo castanets being clicked by the dancers while they are dancing.

An adaptation of a tradition in which Kalinga women gather and prepare for a budong, or peace pact. The Kalingga borrowed the beautiful word ragragsakan from the Ilocano, which means "merriment." The two biggest occasions for a ragragsakan in a Kalinga village are for the homecoming of successful head takers and the culmination of peace-pact between warring tribes. In this dance, Kalinga maidens balance labba baskets on their heads, wave colorful tribal blankets, and sing short salidumay songs as they snake through the terrace dikes and skip through breaks in the path.

The Sarimanok is a legendary bird of the Maranao people who originate from Mindanao, a major island in the Philippines. It comes from the words "sari" and "manok." Sari means cloth or garment, which is generally of assorted colors. Manok is a Filipino word for chicken. The prince in the dance is trying to capture the manok for the princess.

In the beginning, it was only the sea, the sky, and a huge bird. The bird became weary from flying and wanted somewhere to land, so it caused chaos in the sea to disrupt the sky. The sky then showered islands into the sea to give the bird somewhere to land and make its nest, leaving the sky in peace. Land breeze from the islands and sea breeze from the ocean married and had a child, bamboo. One day, the bird was struck by a bamboo stick and out of anger, broke the stick in half. Inside the stick were Malakas and Maganda, who were then married and had many children of their own.

A graceful all-female dance which features flowing movement meant to imply the casting of a magic spell..
Pagapir depicts a royal manner of "walking" among the Maranao people who live mainly around Lake Lanao. Ladies of the royal court perform this stately dance in preparation for an important event. The ladies gracefully manipulate the apir, or fan, while emphasizing their small steps, or "kini-kini", which symbolizes their good manners and prominent family background.

Singkil takes its name from the bells worn on the ankles of the Muslim princess. Perhaps one of the oldest Filipino dances, Singkil recounts the epic legend of the "Darangan" of the Maranao people of Mindanao. This epic, written sometime in the 14th century, tells the story of Princess Gandingan, who was caught in the middle of the forest during an earthquake caused by diwatas, or fairies in the forest. The crisscrossed bamboo poles represent the falling trees that are gracefully avoided. Her slave loyally accompanies her throughout her ordeal. Finally, she is saved by the prince. Dancers skillfully manipulate apir, or fans, which represent the winds that prove to be auspicious. Royal princesses to this day in the Sulu Archipelago are required to learn this most difficult and noble dance.

i can’t believe we’ve made it to PCN 2023, our first official PCN show at the theater since 2020 after covid hit! we struggled, we stressed, we zoomed, and more, but now we get to dance, laugh, and put on this show once again. shoutout to all of cast for bringing back the spirit of PCN and continuing the legacy! starting off, 8TH GRADERS! Avalina, Kalana, and Anushka, although I know a few of you are leaving Whiteny, I see you as a big part of the future of Club Kai. you all have shown passion and dedication to our club that IS RECOGNIZED, please don’t stop doing PCN and thank you for being my PCN cuties. We’re somehow here, PCN 2023 has finally approached us, and all of our hard work and sweat will be going into this one night. I’m so proud of the entire cast. I know you guys have put your entire soul and strength into practice and we’ve made so many lasting memories to carry us through the years. CK Mafia, it’s been amazing being with you guys and going through all our trials and tribulations. You guys are like another family to me, and I’m so proud to be a part of it. Kenzo, Janica, and the other freshies, you guys are the future of PCN, and I’m so glad to have gotten to know all of you and see you come out to practice everyday and enjoying the time we have together. You guys are going to do amazing things in the future, both in and out of PCN, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you guys. Alexis, Alfred, and the other sophomores, you guys are something else. But genuinely some of the funniest people I’ve been with for a while. Thanks for all the laughs and memories together, and I know you guys will keep the freshies in check (or the other way around). Juniors… you guys are alright.. jk. Y’all are amazing, and it’s been great spending time with you guys, pretty much for most of PCN. Especially Crystal, my food buddy n homie, you make PCN even more entertaining, thanks for dealing with my sarcastic antics and just annoying remarks in general. 6 Year Seniors, we've been through this long journey together, and I wouldn’t spend it with any other group of people. y’all are the funniest group of people i’ve been with, and all the memories we’ve made throughout PCN, the goodbyes and the laughs and the crying, I’m glad we spent it together. SINGKIL CLICKERS I’m so proud of y’all. You guys are the most annoying group of boys I’ve ever assembled but your hard work and dedication is amazing. And y’all are just so funny and make everything a good time, I’m grateful for a group of boys like you, y’all are terrible but amazing at the same time. Those that are in TALENT SHOW, crazy. It's like our mini-family and I appreciate all the hard work you guys do. After PCN practice you guys are ready and out to perform once again for a completely different dance, just shows your dedication to the culture and our hard work.
