Strong and avenging rooster The Galo (Portuguese for “Rooster”) became Atlético’s mascot in the late 1930s, inspired by a black and white rooster that used to win every cockfight in the city. In 1945, cartoonist Fernando Pierucetti, a.k.a. “Mangabeira”, drew Atlético’s mascot using the characteristics of the team’s supporters as an inspiration. Mangabeira drew a strong, avenging and winning rooster, which symbolized the courage with which the team played and the bravery of its supporters. “Atlético has always been fearless. The team is like a gamecock, never giving up”, said the cartoonist back then.

HOSTING NATIONAL TEAMS Cidade do Galo has hosted the Brazilian and Argentinean teams in two different occasions. In 2016, both these teams used the Training Center facilities during the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup. Cidade do Galo also hosted the Argentinean team during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. At the time, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) referred to the TC as the “House of Dreams” on their Facebook fanpage. In 2008, the Brazilian Professional Team trained at Cidade do Galo for the match against Argentina, for the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers. Other major Brazilian and foreign clubs also train at Cidade do Galo when they are in Belo Horizonte.

PHYSIOLOGY In 2010, Atlético opened an advanced physiology center, with the latest pieces of equipment, such as the isokinetic testing dynamometer, which measures the strength balance between limbs and anterior and posterior muscles. The new physiology room is also equipped with an Ergospirometry System, a piece of equipment which measures oxygen consumption to determine the athlete’s aerobic capacity, and the Reflotron, a biochemical parameter analyzer to control fatigue caused by training, allowing for more control in terms of injury prevention.

ALMOST INEXPLICABLE The devotion of Atlético’s supporters to the club cannot be easily explained, and it is hard for supporters of other clubs to understand what the soul of an Atleticano is all about. Much more than supporting a team, being an Atleticano is a cultural trait, a symbol of identification and union among millions of people. Supporting Galo is a tradition passed on as a heritage from fathers to their children, generation after generation. This relationship between Atlético and its supporters can be seen in several stadiums around the world, where Atlético plays. Even when Galo is not playing, we can always spot a jersey, a flag or a banner when the Brazilian Professional Team is on the field. Atlético is from Minas Gerais, but the love of an Atleticano is as big as the world. FUTSAL Atlético’s trophy room is enriched by major achievement in other sports. Atlético’s Futsal team won the greatest title in the sport in the 1998 Club World Cup, beating Dinamo from Moscow 3 to 0, in Russia. No Futsal, o Atlético obteve o título máximo da categoria ao se sagrar Campeão Mundial de Clubes em 1998, vencendo o Dínamo de Moscou, por 3 a 0, na Rússia.
