Jim Jr. & Mary Jo Daily started Daily Manufacturing in 1979 by making one product, Min-Col, for Dr. Carey Reams. Since 1979 Daily Manufacturing has expanded to include all of the Reams products as well as other nutritional products. Vegetarian Capsules

Daily Manufacturing uses vegetarian capsules (VGTM Caps) in most encapsulated products excluding softgel capsules. This represents a substantial cost to us, but we believe that it adds quality to our products. Vegetarian capsules are made from plantderived cellulose and are digested as easily and rapidly as gelatin capsules.

We also use delayed-release capsules (DRcaps®) which make it possible to deliver the bioactive components of products directly into the small intestine, protecting ingredients from degradation by stomach acids.

Elemental Values of Minerals

Minerals do not normally occur as pure mineral but rather as part of complex molecules. Some common examples are calcium citrate (calcium combined with citric acid to form calcium citrate) or chelated iron (iron bound to amino acids and/or small proteins). In each case, the calcium or iron accounts for less than 25% of the total weight of the actual substance. Therefore, it is important to know how much actual calcium or iron is in each tablet or capsule. The supplement should state the actual amount of the mineral in question. A supplement may read, “100 mg of calcium from calcium citrate”. In this case there would be 100 mg of elemental calcium, but the calcium citrate would weigh 500 mg. It would take 12 of the capsules to obtain the entire RDA for calcium (1200 mg). Products containing elemental values are indicated by *Elemental

Excipients

In most cases it is easy to determine everything that goes into your supplement just by reading the label. FDA labeling regulations require that all active ingredients be listed in the “Supplement Facts” box and other ingredients be listed beneath as “Other Ingredients.” This is a reasonable regulation that allows the consumers to know exactly what they are taking. It is frequently necessary to use excipients to maintain a consistent capsule weight or even to make a product at all. We use only excipients that are safe and natural, and in some cases even contribute to the nutritional content. We only use excipients when we absolutely must in order to produce a quality product. Many Daily supplements have no excipients. The list of excipients below explains what they are and why they are used. The identifying codes can be used to tell what excipients are in the products listed.The letter codes are at the end of each product description in parenthesis. The following excipients may be used in Daily products. Each name is followed by an alphabetical code that is used at the end of each product description to indicate what excipients are used. If a product contains any of the excipients below, it will be indicated in the product description and on the label. Please note that sources and excipients are subject to change.

Non-Active Ingredients

No Excipients (NE): Many products contain no excipients.

Cellulose (C): Also known as microcrystalline cellulose. A purified plant fiber used as a filler, flowing agent, and aids tablet disintegration. Besides aiding in manufacturing, cellulose supplies a high quality dietary fiber.

Chlorophyll (CL): Natural plant material used as a protective coating on tablets.

Croscarmellose Sodium (CS): This form of cellulose absorbs large quantities of water and expands rapidly. This is used in small amounts to help tablets disintegrate. This effectively eliminates the problem of undigested tablets.

Silicon Dioxide (SD): A natural silica used as an anti-caking agent, that allows “sticky” materials to flow. All silica is poorly absorbed, but does add some silicon to the diet. Typically used in concentrations of 1% or less.

Soybean Oil (SO): This natural vegetable oil is frequently included in softgel capsules containing fat soluble vitamins or oils.

Stearic Acid (SA): A natural vegetable oil often used as a lubricant to allow difficult agents to flow. This is used in small amounts (usually 2% or less), not adding significant calories from fat.

Vitamin E-400 Dry: Dry E-400 is a high quality vitamin E that is a potent anti-oxidant and especially beneficial for the heart and circulatory systems but also used to facilitate healthy aging and freedom from age-related degenerative diseases. Dry vitamin E is bound to succinic acid which is an important, intermediate metabolite produced by the body and used to make other protective nutrients. Activated B6: Conventional vitamin B6 is in the form of pyridoxine hydrochloride. In order for the body to use pyridoxine hydrochloride, it must be processed by the body into the coenzyme form, Pyridoxal 5-phosphate. The processing of pyridoxine requires two energy utilizing steps, catalyzed by the enzymes pyridoxal kinase and pyridoxine phosphate oxidase. B6 (Reams Original) is the coenzyme form, eliminating the need for processing by the body. It is like a plug-in module and is much more efficiently used than the regular type. Activated B-12: Activated B12 provides equal amounts of 5-deoxyadenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin. These are the active forms of vitamin B12. Biotin, B7: Biotin is a coenzyme for carboxylase enzymes. Biotin is involved in the biosynthesis of fatty acids and amino acids and proteins. It is also needed to make glucose through gluconeogenesis. Biotin is known as the hair vitamin but is also critical for many other physiological processes. Methylfolate, B9: Methylfolate is the active form of vitamin B9, most often sold as folic acid. Folic acid is the oxidized form of folate and must be converted by reductions by the dihydrofolate reductase enzyme before it can act as a vitamin. This appears to be a slow process and sometimes incomplete in humans. Therefore, methylfolate is much more available as an active vitamin and may be used in lower doses. An excellent dietary source of folate is green leafy vegetables (foliage) as the name suggests. Methylfolate tablets are available to swallow or chew and provide an excellent quality supplemental form of folate. One tablet provides L-Methylfolate 400 mcg (C, SA, Rice Sweetener, GF, SF, V) 100 tablets

Niacin, B3: Niacin is used in the body to make nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and NAD-phosphate, which supplies energy for many catabolic and anabolic reactions. Niacin will cause a transient niacin flush with redness and a burning sensation in the skin. The niacin flush is uncomfortable but harmless for most people; possible exceptions are persons with asthma or peptic ulcers. One tablet provides Niacin 100 mg & Calcium 56 mg. Pantethine, B5: Vitamin B5 is normally sold as pantothenic acid in the form of D-Calcium Pantothenate. However, the Pantesin® Pantethine is an activated form of pantothenic acid. Pantethine is more easily utilized in the body to make Coenzyme A (a major mediator of energy metabolism). Thiamine, B1 Co-Active: Thiamine provides a supplementary source of thiamine in a form that is both fully active and ready to be used as a co-enzyme (thiamine pyrophosphate) and in a conventional form (thiamine mononitrate) that can be gradually converted to the active form in the body. Thiamine is an important co-factor for pyruvate dehydrogenase which helps convert glucose to Acetyl Co-A. Acetyl Co-A is then used to either make fatty acids for energy storage or proceeds through oxidative phosphorylation to make energy for the body. Thiamine deficiency can result in the disease beriberi, but less severe insufficiency can result in eye damage and impaired cardiac output. The best food sources of thiamine are whole grains, seeds and vegetables. Most thiamine deficiency has resulted from either excessive reliance on white rice or excessive consumption of alcohol which appears to decrease the absorption of dietary thiamine. Why Take Nutritional Supplements?

Nutritional supplements are just what the name suggests concentrated foods designed to meet nutritional needs that may not be adequately may by conventional diets. There are many reasons why people use supplements.

Overt nutritional deficiency may be prevented by a multivitamin and mineral supplement that can fill in the gaps that are commonly encountered in most diets, and is a good foundation to build upon when designing a supplement program.

Special dietary needs can occur as a result of lifestyle or environmental challenges. For example, smoking is known to destroy vitamin C and increase the need for higher doses of the vitamin than may be present in a multivitamin supplement. Vegetarians may need to supplement several nutrients, especially vitamin B12.

Health conditions sometimes respond to dietary improvements. A good example is digestive problems that may be helped by using a digestive enzyme. Osteoporosis is a disease that sometimes respond to supplementation with calcium, vitamin D, and possibly other nutrients. Nutritional interventions have been proposed for heart disease, arthritis, and numerous other health conditions. Many of these remain controversial and nutritional treatment of serious disease should be undertaken with the guidance of a physician who is skilled in the use of nutritional interventions as an adjunct to conventional medical procedures.

Choosing the Right Supplements

There is no simple way to determine the right supplementation program. Even the experts disagree on what supplements are needed and how much should be taken. However, there are some guidelines to help with the decision making process.

Expert advice is always useful for helping to make important decisions, including designing a nutritional program. However, be careful who you trust and always put the greatest trust in yourself and learn as much as possible.

Multi-vitamin and mineral supplements provide low doses of a wide range of nutrients at affordable prices, and should be the foundation of any nutritional program. Supplement Delivery Systems

Supplements can be sold as tablets, capsules, liquids, nasal gels and sprays; and probably other ways. Most supplements are best absorbed in the intestinal tract, which has specific nutrients transport systems which facilitate absorption of nutrients but also regulates the amount absorbed, thereby reducing the risk of toxicity. Liquid supplements run the risk of bacterial contamination. Some reports have found that many liquid supplements contain unacceptably high levels of bacteria. The best form is a capsule with powdered nutrients that immediately dissolves in the stomach when the capsule dissolves. Tablets are becoming better, however and a well designed tablet can dissolve as rapidly as a capsule. Some supplements (such as vitamin C) are best taken as a time-release tablet so that small amounts of the nutrients can be released throughout the day. Powders are also an effective way to take supplements, but present the challenge of measuring the precise dose. The exposure to air when a powder container is opened also presents additional stability problems compared to nutrients protected from the environment by capsules.
