Happy December Hello Tsunamis and Purple Dinos!

Can you believe it’s already December? The very cold season of joy and spirit is upon us. No matter what you celebrate, make sure to take a break from school and appreciate the little things in your life, whatever those may be.

As the holidays are fast approaching so is a fun exciting event… the 70th Annual Cali-Nev-Ha District Convention (DCON)! DCON will be held in Sacramento, April 8-10!

If you did not know already, the theme is “Guardians of Service”! The DCON registration site opens on December 10th and the link will be available on www.cnhkeyclub.org, fondly known in the Key Club world as the (CyberKey). On-time registration should be received by February 10th. More details on this wonderful event will be shared at the December and January Division Council Meetings, coming up soon! I hope that you join us so you can see how big our District Ohana really is!!!

I would like to say I sincerely apologize for not being able to attend the November Division Council Meeting (DCM); I missed your wonderful faces. I hope to see you at our December DCM along with all of us doing a great service project. This activity is hosted by Casa Grande Key Club, in Petaluma! More details about the day are in this newsletter! Look for the flyer about sharing information about this December 19th event.

Winter is fast approaching so I hope you stay warm and remember to do a service project this month to help others in need this holiday season. Don’t forget that at the November DCM we introduced a great pamphlet with several creative ideas for Winter Service Projects. Some of them are in this newsletter, but we’ve now posted the entire document on the division website at www.keyclubregion15.weebly.com. Scroll down to the bottom of the Home Page. Also, at the bottom of the Home Page is an informative slide show regarding our Region 15 plans for District Convention. Take some time to check it out, too! Member of the Month: The Member of the Month goes to…TAYLOR HEXTRUM! Taylor Hextrum attends Cardinal Newman and has been chosen as Member of the Month by her fellow Key Clubbers. She has a strong voice in their club meetings, always offering great ideas to improve their club. She always keeps the members on task, and helps organize events such the Buddy Blankets they do in their club. Newman is very lucky to have her! Congratulations Taylor, keep on serving!

Kiwanis Advisor: The Kiwanis Advisor of the month goes to…STEPHEN BEARDEN! Stephen Bearden is one of the Kiwanis Advisors for Cloverdale Key Club. He has attended all of their Key Club meetings to be there for them. He has also been very reliable for driving the Key Clubbers from place to place whenever they need, including all the way to Fall Rally in October. He continues to be a huge support system for the Cloverdale Key Clubbers. He even opened his home for the K-Family party held to celebrate Key Club Week. I want to say thank you Mr. Bearden for being a great advisor by providing any help that you can to improve each leader in Cloverdale Key Club. Congratulations!

Club of the Month: The club of the month goes to…HUMBOLDT! Humboldt has been very organized regarding support for the Pediatric Trauma Program. They made over $200 and served over 20 hours to contribute to this Cali-Nev-Ha’s preferred charity. They also served at the Pregnancy Care Center Banquet, which they do annually. They served over 50 hours that night. I am so proud of this club for always improving each month. I am so glad they enjoy serving their community in any way they can. Congratulations Humboldt!

Montgomery Key Clubbers have been extremely busy this past month doing service!

We had 8 members attend Fall Rally North on October 24th, including new members who have become greatly involved in our service events. As a club, we have decided to fundraise for the YWCA, a safe house for abused women and children. We hosted a Party Lite candle party in which a portion of the sales were given back to us in order to donate to the YWCA--we ended up fundraising over $300! Several members volunteered to bring baked goods and snacks to the party while others brought family members and friends. As an ongoing project, members volunteered at the Redwood Empire Food Bank. For Veterans Day, we volunteered at a parade in the Oakmont community. We helped set the drivers up and count the entries. There was a total of 70 entries in the parade, including our sponsoring Kiwanis club. Some members and our advisor sold food at a Green Teen event that was organized to benefit Middletown High School, which was partially burned in the Valley Fires that occurred in September. One of the Kiwanis members owns a service shop at the entrance of Oakmont community; and we as a club wanted to spread the holiday cheer by decorating it! We attached giant letters to spell out "Joy" at the front and hung lights around pillars. Working with our Kiwanis club was so much fun!

Cloverdale Key Clubbers have been very busy during October and November. We have been delivering phonebooks throughout Healdsburg and Geyserville, a total of 5373 books. We have also been selling See’s candy in school and outside at our local store, fundraising for the Pediatric Trauma Program. All the PTP money went to Fall Rally with us.

We took $743 to add to the Division 32 funds used to bid on the CNH Board at Fall Rally. We also took nine members to Six Flags that day. The week before Fall Rally we volunteered for the Cloverdale Kiwanis Marathon, the base set up at nearby at Asti. It was an amazing experience with over 300 runners. We helped at the aid stations, handing out various kinds of waters and fruit, plus directing them through the race course. Hopefully, next year the Kiwanis can have the whole marathon run in the vineyards, which will make it be the only marathon in the world run completely inside a vineyard! Cloverdale also helped with an Alexander Valley Film Society project, a Senior Center Craft Faire, a Knights of Columbus Dinner, as well as did some Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF. Finally, we planned for Key Club Week and that was a huge hit. We made sure we did something with every day’s theme.

For Key Club Week, Montgomery Key Clubbers decided to emphasize “Kudos to the Key Players” Day! This was the theme for Tuesday. At the weekly club meetings, we had been folding and creating boxes. Later on we filled them with candy and attached some tags with the sayings, "Gee, thanks!" and "Key Club". Some members put one in each of the teacher’s boxes in the office. We wanted to give these to the teachers at our school to thank them for always being supportive of our club and to show our appreciation to them.

Monda y: We took a group picture with Key Club shirts!

Thursday: We gave familythemed drinking glasses to our Kiwanis club; with a speech on how they matter.

At school, we clipped onto students clothespins with fun compliments written on them.

Tuesday: Put sticky notes with compliments on teachers’ doors!

Provided donuts and cookies for their snack break! Gave posters and pumpkin candles to our advisors! Gave ‘Thank you’ cards to local businesses.

W e d ne s d a y : During lunchtime we made sock snowman for a Children’s Miracle Network hospital.

Then, after school we delivered phone books in nearby Healdsburg. Finally, there was the Builder’s Club Dinner that night.

Friday: Party Time! We threw a HUGE K-Family pizza party! 11 Builders Clubbers, 12 Key Clubbers and 13 Kiwanis showed up!

A local non-profit that collects donations and distributes toys and food to needy families in the community at Christmas.

What work will we do?

We’ll work with members of Petaluma Kiwanis and Christmas Cheer to greet program recipients and load food and toy gifts into vehicles.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes and bring a jacket! We will be working inside and outside, rain or shine!

“Coats For Kids” Hi, my name is Atziry Rodriguez and I am spearheading a project called “Coats For Kids.” This project purpose is to collect any size, or style of jacket, coat, sweater, hoodie, etc., that is clean with a functioning zipper. We plan to give them to homeless students. The students range from 4 to 18 years old. NO used-looking clothing or shoes, please. Underwear, socks, and shoes need to be new if you would like to donate those things as well. Please make sure that anything I’ve mentioned that you would like to donate is given to me by December 15th. It would be nice to receive your donations by the time that it starts to get super cold and rainy. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. Please donate what you can spare.

Region 15 Plans for District Convention

Preparing for DCON

By Casey Petersen District Convention, (DCON), is right around the corner! It’s important to get organized and start fundraising right away. When your club starts to make plans for DCON it is extremely important that your new incoming officers attend. They will receive priceless training and information that is key to becoming a good leader for your club.

There are many different ways to fundraise for DCON, with the help of your club you can reach whatever goal you set for yourself. One way to fundraise during December is to make “Finals Survival Kits” to sell to your student body. Plan a meeting where your club gets together and puts kits together. These can be filled with pencils, gum, inspirational quotes, or whatever you think students will like. Make sure to advertise! Put out an announcement in your student newspaper, morning announcements or social media to get people’s attention. However your club chooses to fundraise for DCON, its key that you start now!

Scroll down to the bottom, and you’ll find a slide show that tells you almost everything you could possibly want to know. The slide show also shares a number of fundraising ideas that you might want to consider doing.
