Member of the Month The April Member of the Month goes to… DANIELA ALVAREZ from Montgomery High School!

This is Daniela’s first year of Key Club and she has already stepped up to serve the division level. She has shown up as a guest at Division Leadership Team meetings showing great interest to take on a more responsible role. She has shown enthusiasm for service and passion to make Divisions 20 & 32 stronger. I am happy she is going to be a part of the Division Leadership Team for the 2015-2016 term, as the Fall Rally Coordinator. She is also going to be Vice President for her home club for the 20152016 school year. I am so proud of her for being so dedicated to Key Club, even though its only been her first year.

The April Club of the Month goes to… PINER! I am so proud of each and every Key Clubber from Piner who has been showing up to division-wide events and showing that they truly have a heart of kindness. It has been great seeing their club improve, expanding their service beyond their home club. Other than just showing up to service events, they have also sent their Monthly Report Form in on time, which is extremely important. I am also very grateful to have four of their Key Clubbers on the 2015-2016 Division Leadership Team. Thank you Piner for contributing in making Region 15 amazing. Congratulations and keep up the marvelous work!

Key Leader

District Convention By : Alayna Lorence Cloverdale Key Club President This year I attended Key Club’s District Convention 2015. This is been my third DCON I have attended since I joined Key Club. As always, I am amazed by the sheer passion all clubs, despite their size, have towards their service projects. It’s inspiring to see the thousands of Key Clubbers come together to celebrate all the countless hours and dollars they spent on so many different service projects. Their dedication towards service will never cease to amaze me. I had an amazing time, learned a lot at the different workshops, laughed and made great memories with my fellow division members.

We had the most incredible time at this year’s Key Leader event, held in Occidental on the last weekend of March. Close to three fourths of the attendees were Key Clubbers from our region!

Every year I go to DCON I love the fact that Key Club is such an accepting organization, that I can always make friends with whomever sits next to me in the many activities throughout the event. We are all there with one goal, to learn more about how to serve those who need our help. Those members that have not yet been able to go to DCON I strongly urge all of you to start raising money now and go next year. Not only do you learn and bring back new ideas that will greatly benefit your club, but you also have lots of fun, make unforgettable memories, and make new friends outside of your local area.

Things our members say about this year’s Key Leader - I learned the characteristics of being a great leader and I will take all these things I learned and use them in my everyday life.

- It was a good experience to learn about my strengths and weaknesses in the way I communicate with others.

- I have overcome some obstacles here, and now know how to deal with them outside of Key Leader.

- No words can express how thankful I am for being able to experience the BEST experience EVER! - I had an AMAZING weekend!

- I loved meeting new people and making new friends.

The spotlight this month is on children in hospitals. Children's Miracle Network is our Region 15 recommended service to support this month. 62 children enter the Oakland Children’s Hospital every minute for treatment. Their problems range from small scrapes to cancer. Children’s Miracle Hospitals provide the best support and comfort for these children. We recommend that each club in Region 15 do a hands-on project, making something to donate to the Oakland Children’s Hospital, our nearest CMN facility. We’re posting a whole section on our region website with ideas for projects to do. They actually look like a lot of fun, and won’t cost clubs too much to put together! We were out in force for the annual March for Babies, held on April 18th this year, in Howarth Park, Santa Rosa. We provided them with over 30 volunteers for the event, and many of our members were there, bright and early, at 6 a.m.! A number of our clubs also fundraised for the cause, and brought money to be able to walk in the March.

Thank you to the following clubs who participated: Cloverdale, Maria Carrillo, Montgomery, Piner, Santa Rosa and Windsor. Don’t forget that the March of Dimes is an international “Preferred Charity” and was our April division service focus.

Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus take the lives of 49,000 innocent babies and a significant amount of mothers each year. How the baby gets this disease is through unsanitary birthing practices. Mothers n third world countries often give birth on the ground, or in other significantly unsafe conditions. The tetanus gets into the baby making them suffer excruciating pain. The baby often barely lives a week, being succumbed into death without a mother’s touch, since it’s so sensitive to light and dark. How would you feel if you could never touch your child and that it was born to die almost immediately? Do not forget that “Eliminate Week “is coming up May 4-8. We hope that your club has been planning a fundraising project for this time.

March of Dimes/March for Babies

Club Reports We have been holding committee meetings to get ready for an event we’re calling the “Dinner of Talents”. It includes a spaghetti dinner and a talent show. We’re holding this event on Sunday evening, May 3rd. It’s a joint project with our Kiwanis and Builders Club and all the money we make will be given to our Kiwanis club for them to send off for their Eliminate Project donation. ~ Cloverdale

One of our recent service activities was a “dollar-aday” event. Basically, what we did was to go around school, and also outside school, asking acquaintances to donate a dollar, (or more), to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Another activity was the making of Mother’s Day cards, and the money fundraised was for the Eliminate Project.

We’re also working on a Dine and Donate campaign, for the Eliminate Project. We found out about the “Thirst Project” when we went to District Convention. We are excited about organizing a campaign to raise money to help build wells in Africa. ~ Piner

We took 4 members from the club to the District Convention. The 4 of us went with our division and spent the week celebrating service, learning and sharing new ideas for the club, and met Key Clubbers from California, Nevada and Hawaii. ~ Casa Grande

We recently did a phone night at the YMCA. We raised about $500 for their annual giving campaign. ~ Santa Rosa

We had a total of 3 members attend the District Convention where one member received the “Member of the Year” award, and one was installed as the 2015-16 Lt. Governor, and the last one was recognized with a “Distinguished” medal for her Major Emphasis Project submission, telling about the club’s fundraising efforts for the Eliminate Project. For Eliminate Week, 7 members got together and we made Mother’s Day cards.

We will be selling them as we get closer to Mother’s Day. Also, on a recent Thursday morning, our club took over our Kiwanis Oakmont meeting. We even gave up our Spring Break time to do it! ~ Montgomery

Officers Training Conference

At the Officers Training Conference, there was a special Presidents and Secretaries Training session. They had to show up early to be taught how to complete the MRF. They were taught by IP Distinguished Club Secretary Maggie Duran and IP LTG Thu Dang. Some other members who showed up early were able to work on a service project in the back. Later the DCM started as the officers and members showed up. The DCM included the introduction of the new Division Leadership Team. As the DCM ended, officers were spilt up into their specific officer groups, for slide show presentations. These were presented by teams of Kiwanis members and Key Clubbers. When officer training ended, clubs got the chance to take pictures with the spirit gear and to dress up for some fun.

April 25th was my first Officers Training Conference and it was really informative. Thu and Maggie did a great job with the Presidents and Secretaries Training and thoroughly taught how to use the MRF. They made the MRF easier to understand and use. I appreciate all the personal help when I had any problems or questions. I had a great time meeting new people and getting to know the secretaries from different high schools. The food was terrific and delicious and I loved the slideshow from DCON. I learned a lot from the Secretary training and now I feel prepared for this year.

AAR Recommendations

The annual achievement report, also known as the AAR, basically sums up the past term for the club you serve. The district uses this report to review the overall achievements of the club you serve.

The AAR score that the club you serve receives helps determine eligibility for recognition and awards, some of which may be presented at District Convention 2016. Maybe you’ll be the representative to walk on stage!

Year-End-Banquet

An end-of-the-year banquet brings together both new and old officers, as well as regular members. families and Kiwanis. It is encouraged to invite Kiwanis, and even Builders Clubbers to the event. Those who are recognized at the “banquet” can be important individuals who have done a great deal of work for the community and the club. It is a great way to acknowledge members who have been involved. It demonstrates our inclusiveness as well as caring, two of the Key Club core values. For retiring seniors and past officers it’s a great way to send them off, to see them shine in recognition, one last time. Being in the Key Club organization we learn to value the beauty of service; and one way to express this beauty is at this event.
