Adopt-a-Family, driven by Lexus of Calgary Impact Report 2023
Since 2009 Closer to Home’s Adopt-a-Family initiative has been giving hope to thousands of vulnerable families in Calgary and the surrounding area during the December holiday season.
To help support this vision, we have provided community initiatives for kids, youth and families on their paths to growth and healing, and one of these vital initiatives is Adopt-a-Family. When we started this holiday program years ago, we identified a gap in services during the holidays and knew that the families we served struggled to make ends meet. Our team started a small food hamper for families and a holiday gift program for their children, but we quickly saw the support needed during this time grow year over year, bringing us to where we are today.

The impact you made for a dad and his kids this year is significant.
A dad and his children had just fled an unsafe situation in another province, as the birth mother was returning after being away, without contact for a long period of time and dad knew he needed to put as much space between them and mom to ensure his kids safety.
Dad spent most of his money moving his family here, and it took some time to secure a job once they arrived, but is now working towards a more positive and sable future for him and his kids. The dad was so grateful for Adopt-a-Family as it meant he was able to make the day extra special for his kids with a special meal and some small gifts for the kids, so they can begin to make new memories together.
