Publisher’s Note

SimmyCheema I remember early years of my childhood, especially the kind words someone said to encourage and praise me, or hurtful words/statements to insult me especially in front of others. If you think bullying happens only in schools, think again. In some cases, like mine, it starts from home. The way your parents and siblings treat you leads you to believe that it’s ok to be treated the same way at school and workplace. Often children are not taken seriously or ignored when they tell someone about being bullied, and adults often feel humiliation in telling someone. It is very difficult, but not impossible, to gather the strength to put a “STOP” to it. Our efforts to uncover these issues that affects all of us, especially, our children and youth, will only succeed if we start by being mindful of how we treat others, and see things around us with open eyes and mind. As Wayne Dyer says, “ If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” I would like to give a big thank you to all our supporters for believing in my vision. Especially, my heartfelt thanks to God, my team, my family and the contributing writers who believe in making a difference. “Real people, real stories”

“No two people are born exactly identical, not even twins. Physically we may be male or female, but we have the human ability to be empathetic to others views and feelings, and that helps to unite us. How we look is not an indication of how we identify ourselves or see our selfimage. I think it’s simple; each person is important, so just use the Golden Rule and treat others well. I admire Close Look’s initiative.” - Brian Stacey South Surrey, BC WINTER - SPRING

Di-Versity

I first became aware of Close Look when

Jacky Di informed us that there was a talent contest our girls in might be interested in. Jackie has known our girls for several years and has seen them grow as talented young performers and as friends. When I told the girls about Close Look’s Got Talent and once they checked into what it was all about, we all got very interested in participating. It was quite amazing how good the talent was at the event, and even more amazing how much community support there was for Close Look and its mission to help young people. I admire the way Close Look provides a platform for young people to showcase their own individual talent. In this safe, supportive environment, people are encouraged to step out and grow, while at the same time having fun doing it. It also creates an opportunity to network with peers. We were delighted to find out that Richard

tion to the negative; pay attention to the positive and there will be no time for the negative.

Thinking back to when I was young and how simple, easy and fun life was at the time (excluding homework :) ), I can see how difficult it is to be young today with all the diverse influences competing for attention. The sheer number of different influences alone is overwhelming and becomes a negative influence. How is a person supposed to think clearly with so much going on in the world? And with instant communication over the internet, our reactions to news events become kneejerk rather than delayed and thought-out.

Fortunately, human nature directs us toward kindness and success. If we are there to support each other, to cheer each other on, then all of society wins.

We as adults, and organizations like Close Look, are so much more important in a young person’s life today. There are so many negative aspects of life to overcome. And the best way to do that is to be positive. Never mind paying too much attenCLOSE LOOK 2019

Muskan Poddar sing. For as long as I can remember I have had passion for singing. My first time performing on stage was when I was 9 years old; although it was a small community talent show, it was nerve-racking at the time. Since then I have performed, pop songs for the most part, countless times at events such as Youth Talent Search BC, Talent Nation, fundraising and private events, and, of course, Close Look. I have had a lot of help along the way, but my parents are definitely my main supporters. As long as they’ve known about my love for singing, they’ve been encouraging me to get up on stage and perform. My dad usually finds opportunities for me, and helps me submit auditions for shows and competitions.

studying at Stenberg college completing my counseling and therapy diploma program. My hobbies are playing piano, guitar and singing I have been doing it since I was 10 years old. The way that I balance my schedule between study and hobbies is by making time after I’m done studying making it more of a relaxing, self-care moment for myself because I find that music is a way to express myself emotionally. The people who motivate me in my life are my par-

and they make me challenge myself to be better. In 5 years I see myself as a youth/young adult counselor working at a non-

profit organization which will eventually lead me to open my own private practice. My advice to those pursuing their hobbies

is that if the music is part of who you are, you should pursue it

and see where it leads you to, but always make sure you have a plan B. My experience winning the cash amount at Close Look’s

event was fantastic, I had a great time performing in front of a great audience. I think that more youth should participate on

stage because its a great way to get experience and overcome stage fright.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES

4000 FEET ABOVE! “The passion was for untold freedom!”

F

lying has been a life long passion for Mr. Pradeep and the last fifteen years he has been flying for the thrill of it. Pradeep loves flying for the freedom it offers, at 4000 feet above ground! Pradeep was a passionate Delhi kid. He was crazy enough to be riding hands-free while standing on the seat of an Enfield Bullet. That was Pradeep before he began working for survival. Pradeep and his elder brother came to canada with $29 dollars in their pocket. If you wanted to work at a decent job you needed some local education. Besides going to work he went to a highschool and graduated and in the process he became a fine young man. Fine young men fall in love too. He fell in love with Carmel, got married and raised a family. That made him responsible and work twice as hard. But Pradeep was a passionate young man. Passion remained deep within, but it needed to come out. It could not be addressed on a dance floor alone. The passion was for untold freedom! It led him to a flying club. He was not rich, but he took to the wings all the same. Up in the air, 4000 feet above the

Pradeep understood the difference between adventure and recklessness. If you want your adventure in the air you need to respect the winds, clouds, thunderbolts and the weather. You must learn to respect nature as a whole. You need to be a little humble before the force of gravity. And if you want your adventure, you need to respect your flying machine. You can not pull up in mid air and say, “Damn it, I blew a gasket !”. You can not stall in mid air and say, “Shoot, I ran out of Gas !” or telephone a friend. You need to be responsible before going up. That’s what Pradeep had learnt even before he bought his own plane.

“Kissing the clouds and wrestling with the winds and rain. That was adventure !” You absolutely need to be responsible with yourself and with your machine. It is not buying but owning. Just as good health needs regular monitoring, aircraft- maintenance needs scores of different things, whether you buy it or borrow it. To stay up in the air you need to be alert. Alert because the weather is an ever changing thing. It could change its mind in a matter of minutes. The moment you are overconfident, the minute you take things easy, you are asking for trouble. What makes people overconfident? Alcohol is one item that helps people to shed their fears, overcome their inhibitions and pushes them into risk-taking mode. Alcohol is a friend of bad-judgement. Alcohol has landed many intelligent people in the emergency wards and trauma care centers.

CLOSE LOOK 2019

WINTER - SPRING

It’s a matter of prudence for Pradeep to stay away from alcohol well before flying. Thats discipline for all the young people before starting their motors. Pradeep gets his excitement, his adrenaline rush, but he also keeps his head, his flying license and his Cessna. “What saddens me are the poor decisions made by rich parents who buy roaring cars and power bikes for their kids’ birthday. Power gets kids into trouble. Let’s accept the fact that some kids need an adventure. Youth needs an adrenaline rush. Don’t give them cars. Give them an alternative to cars and drugs. For the price of a car, your son or daughter, can get a commercial pilot’s license. Check if your kid likes flying. Flying makes them disciplined. Flying makes them responsible.” By Prasad Kamalanabha

STRONG KIDS Bake Sale FUNDRAISER Our kids are part of the YMCA community and have been since they were toddlers. The YMCA has offered active play, creative play, swimming, bouncy castle craziness and other activities that has been an integral part of their upbringing. Now, as they are growing up, they are becoming more and more aware that they are very privileged to have the opportunity to have a safe place to play. These little brains decided to start a bake sale tradition in 2017 and wanted to “give back” to other kids who do not have the same opportunities they have. So, here we are in 2018, giving back to our own community at the YMCA. The kids baked their cookies on a Saturday afternoon and off they went. With the generosity of YMCA members and staff, they were able to raise over $100 for the Strong Kids Program. They were so pleased with their success, that they want to do it every year! After the bake sale, my son said, “Now other kids can play too!”. If we can instill the concept of “giving back” with our youth, the future will be promising. By Shannon Gill

WORDS OF WISDOM

WHAT THE WORLD

NEEDS IS

LOVE! A poor, old man went about planting mango trees. Someone said to him,”Why are you planting trees at your age? Surely, you will not llive to eat their fruit!” Quietly, the old man answered,”I have eaten mangoes grown from trees planted by others. Let my trees yield mangoes to those who live after I am gone!” We live in a wonderful universe in which everyone and everything gives. The trees give, the rivers give, the earth gives, the sun and moon and stars give. Why then, must you be anxious to take, to receive, to gather, to hoard and not to scatter? Everyone, no matter how poor, can give something. We can give a loving thought, a sweet word, a radiant smile, a helping hand, any of which may bring a comfort to a broken heart. More than money, the world needs love and sympathy. By J.P. Vaswani CLOSE LOOK 2019

CLOSE LOOK IN ACTION “Close Look Got Talent 2017 was our first annual Youth Talent show held by Close Look United Foundation, a registered not for profit society. Congratulations to all the participants. We thank all the parents and guests for attending this event to support Youth. This is an annual Youth Talent show where our efforts go into promoting awareness, diversity and equality through arts and culture in our community. The event itself provides a platform for young musicians, writers, artists and performers to showcase their talents live.

At our event, we awarded cash awards and trophies varying categories from solo and group live performances to visual arts. We are hopeful that by youth participating in such activities, we can give youth a productive leadership role and/or opportunity that promotes positive attitude and exceptional work ethic. We ultimately hope that by having youth, including those at risk, getting involved in our initiatives we will give them a push in the right direction while pursuing their passion, rather than getting involved in drugs, crime, and social exclusion. Furthermore, this initiative will give all youth an equal chance to showcase their performances and qualify for an award. www.clufoundation.org

FEATURE STORY

BULLYING By Nasima Nastoh

( A mother that lost her 14-year-old son Hamed to bullying.)

KILLS

Surviving the death of a loved one is to endure a great pain, surviving a suicidal death is to compound that pain with such embarrassment as public ridicule, private humiliation, and often exaggerated feelings of guilt and anger

of repeated aggressive behavior, with negative intent, directed from one person to another where there is a power imbalance.

On March 11, 2000 my life shattered when my 14-year-old son Hamed was driven to the end by bullying. He was tormented to death by his peers. The constant name-calling slurs, and attack on his sexuality by bullies pushed him to his emotional breaking point. He was so very upset that his friends didn’t stand up for him. He was so confused that he didn’t know where to turn.

“Bullied children often suffer in silence.”

On that cold March day, Hamed wrote us a note, later, he left home and he travelled 10 kilometres from our home to Patullo bridge. He climbed on the bridge and jumped in to the Fraser River ending his torments forever.

-Nasima Nastoh

Bullying is everyone’s problem. Its outcomes are life long and frequently life damaging. Bullying is violent behaviours imposed by individuals who wish to intimidate, harass, alienate and isolate others they perceive as weaker, vulnerable and easy targets. Bullying is a form of violence. Bullying often begins with verbal assaults. Isolation, intimidation and character assassination are the weapons of choice. Bullying is about power and control. Bullying is a long-standing problem that has recently becoming increasingly worse among teens. Every kid has either been bullied or know someone in his or school that is being bullied, or, maybe he or she is the school bully. Bullying is the most common form of violence in our society. Bullying is a pattern CLOSE LOOK 2019

Bullying take place in different forms. • Physical Bullying happens when a student is hit, pushed and kicked • Verbal Bullying is by far the most common form of bullying. This is name calling, sexist and racist comments, verbal threats, cruel jokes about appearance, disabilities, and religion

Children are very good at hiding the fact they are being bullied. Reasons for hiding is that they are afraid that parents will go and confront the bully and the bully will retaliate. Parents must be vigilant and talk to children. Parents should watch for the warning signs: • Unexplained bruises and swellings or scratches

• Relational Bullying means being left out, gossiping or, exclusion, and formation of groups

• A loss of appetite and a personality change are also indicators.

• Cyber Bullying involves the use of information and communication technologies such as e-mail, text messages, websites or defamatory personal websites, facebook, snapchat. One study found that victims of cyber bullying had higher levels of depression than victims of face to face bullying

• Change routines and routes to school. In fact, they may not want to go to school at all or if they do, they leave later. They are sometimes unusually late or do not attend school

• Torn clothing and losing belongings

• Having nightmares

• Bullying occur in malls, in cars, at community playgrounds, in parks, on streets, and recreational centers. School buses, school classrooms, corridors, gyms and washroom are target areas for bullies at school it can occur anytime and all the time. Research shows that bullying occurs most frequently when children are unsupervised

• Shyness, silence, tears and retreating to the bedroom or self-imposed alienation from regular friends are all too often symptomatic of a bullied child

The most important thing to remember is that children and adolescents tend not to want to tell their parents. They feel a sense of failure often projecting upon themselves guilt and admonition. Many children have said that when they did reveal an incident or incidents to a teacher or parent, they were made to believe that they were responsible in some way. They recall comments such as “you probably did something to provoke the bully”, “why don’t you stay away from him you know he is a bully”, “you are always complaining about something”, “grow up and stand up for yourself ”.

and more importantly fear of reprisal. They need to be assured that the bully is wrong not the victim and that standing up for one’s rights does not necessarily mean physically fighting back or standing up to face emotional and physical harm. Victims must know that telling and obtaining help and assistance is the correct personal conflict management strategy.

Victims of bullying need to be assured they “did the right thing” when reporting a bully. They must be protected from reprisals

• Personality experts suggest that some bullied children are likely to have difficulty in groups, are shy and reserved. They may exhibit signs of low-self-esteem and anxiousness

Bullying has long-term psychological effects on both those who bully and those who are bullied. Hamed wanted me to tell his story. He hoped that perhaps. I would make a difference in the actions of bullies.

His last wish was written in his suicide note.

Suicide is devastating. There is nothing natural about it, and you have no idea what suicide does to the victims who are left behind. Our lives have been scarred with worst kind of loss. We are living a different life. A life that we never asked for. The pain and sorrow of losing Hamed is more than just words can say. It has been 18 years. Do I miss him??? YES. I miss him everyday, day in and day out. I will never forget the face of the RCMP office who had to tell me that they found the cold body of Hamed from the Fraser River. I will never forget the pain in my heart like someone stuck a knife through it. At that moment I wished that I could die and be with him, but God helped me and gave me the strength to work and make a difference in his memory. I founded the Hamed Nastoh’s Anti bullying Coalition. I provided and continue assistance to victims of bullying and raised awareness about the issue of bullying. Awareness is the best weapon against any issue. I have spoken to more than 100 schools in Lower Mainland and out of province. I also founded the Stand Up Speak Against Bullying forum which is held every year in memory of Hamed. CLOSE LOOK 2019 31

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation South Asian Youth Committee BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) is one of the most

impactful facilities and organizations to serve the residents of British Columbia, as thousands of infants, children and youth annually rely upon a variety of resources that they provide. In 2016, a group of 4 young women from Surrey, BC became inspired by the hospital’s ability to help others in their community. The girls decided to do their part and support the hospital by establishing the “BC Children’s Hospital Foundation South Asian Youth Committee”- fundraising organization whose mission is to raise money for the hospital foundation. Since then, the committee has actively contributed to the BCCH Foundation by volunteering at local events, as well as hosting annual bake sales during the winter holiday season. Moving forward, the BCCHF South Asian Youth Committee has quickly grown, and currently consists of 7 executive members, as well as 7 general members who collaborate on fundraising projects for the BCCH. In 2017, $15,664.34 was raised for the hospital by the youth committee though volunteering at events, collecting donations, and hosting their

The BC Children’s Hospital holds a very dear place in each committee member’s hearts, as they have all been supported by the hospital in some point of their lives– either through family members, friends, or themselves. “We feel as though it is the responsibility of the youth of our generation to support the well-being and health of our peers and community members in any way we can. Every little bit helps, so as a committee, we encourage you to also become involved and see how you can take part in supporting the incredible BC Children’s Hospital Foundation” (Nimrit Basra). CIRCLE OF KINDNESS

Altruism isn’t for a day. It isn’t even for cause. It really is a habit; one that spreads the smile in its own special way. It touches people. It creates an unspoken, untold bond that has the power to bind strangers, even if for just a moment, and cause the ripple effect to follow through. And this is why we bring to you the Kindness Circle, to recount the stories you can be inspired from, stories you can pass along and stories that will melt your heart.

my four kids in November 2016. We were grateful for the opportunity that we had been given to come here. After everything that we had been through back home, this seemed like a miracle. That didn’t make it any less challenging though. Despite the initial support provided by the groups working to support the refugees, as a single mother, I could not put enough food on the table for my kids, or see a way of making ends meet. I tried looking for new jobs but did not have my SIN number yet, and hence, was at the brink of a breakdown. I sat outside a grocery store with a begging bowl that day for the first time in my life, hoping that by the end of the day I could go in and buy enough food for dinner for my kids. Some people gave some change, but a young lady passing by stopped and talked to me, and really, changed my life. She asked me how I got there. I told her bits and pieces of my story between sobs, and talked about how I was so worried for my kids. She offered to buy me groceries that day and after paying for my bill, took my address from me. She came by the next day and showed me a GoFundMe page that she had created for me, and over time raised some funds to support me and my family until I could get a job. She got her friends to donate clothes and shoes for my kids as well, and brought a cake and chocolates for us for Christmas that year.

“I sat outside a grocery store with a begging bowl that day for the first time in my life”

Thinking of her still makes me so emotional. I will never forget her kindness. I keep her in my prayers consistently and she still visits me and my children every now and then. I don’t know what life would have been like if she hadn’t stopped that day. - Sabina, Age: 29

SPEAK UP

“ Talk to Me” COUNSIL COLUMN

By Kashmir K. Besla MA, RCC

Hello Close Look youth and

parents. Welcome to another edition of the magazine. I want to thank Simmie and the team for inviting me to write for this amazing magazine that focuses on the strength and veracity of our youth. A little information about me. I am a registered clinical counsellor with nearly twenty-five years of experience working with youth and families. I love my job, and I am honored to work with those that are reaching out to make a change in their lives. Asking for help, isn’t always easy. Some people take a long time to build up the courage to see a therapist. It’s not always easy to look at what’s working and what isn’t in our lives. Some experiences can be painful, and difficult to talk about. I want you to know, you are not alone, help is available. Every problem has a solution, sometimes we just need some help in finding it. In the previous edition of the magazine, (Born This Way), homosexuality was discussed. We received positive feedback from our readers. Many parents are still uncomfortable in speaking to their children about sexuality, and in many homes, homosexuality is still a taboo subject. Parents can react very differently upon learning that their child is gay. Some will say, I always knew, others will be very surprised and express disappointment or even anger. It can be challenging for parents to discuss

these issues with their children, but youth can also suffer needlessly in having to keep a secret in fear of hurting or disappointing their parents. It’s not easy being a parent, but loving your child unconditionally is vital. Depending on your relationship, your child was probably quite nervous to tell you about their attraction to someone of their own gender. Take the time to listen to your child. Hear what they have to say.

“The more you deny them their feelings, the harder this will be.” No one chooses who they love, it’s biological. Imagine how difficult it would be for you if you were told who you could love? Young people be patient with your parents. All this information may be very new for them and they don’t know how to react. They want you to be happy, so give them some time to process your announcement. They may respond well, or they may not. You are still entitled to feel the way you do, but you may need to get support from another adult or rofessional. Every family is different, and you are perfect, just the way you are. In this magazine, I want to invite you to ask me questions about the challenges that CLOSE LOOK 2019

you may be facing. If you are struggling in a relationship, addiction or mental health, please write to me. Are you arguing with your parents, or do you disagree with their expectations of you? Let me know what is happening in your life. Chances are, there are other youth that have the same questions and concerns that you do. I will address your questions concerns in my column. My responses are an opportunity to start a dialogue. You may need to seek assistance from a professional. I am looking forward to hearing from you and getting to know you. I will leave you with a quote I love,

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” Wayne Dyer

MAKEOVER

MONSTER MAKEOVER Stephanie Ryder is a

mad scientist in her own right. She creates grotesque monsters that waken with a jolt of the camera’s flash. She paints the lips of mermaids before they sing their siren songs to be translated on glossy magazines. And she’ll rip open the wounds of creatures to celebrate the beauty of blood on film. From the old aged technologically inept cities to our modern day fast paced lifestyle in the Lower Mainland, Stephanie’s scalps, pinsers, and wires are replaced with brushes, powders, and glitter. In other words, our mad scientist is a genius makeup artist. Stephanie has always strived to stand out from the crowd, pushing herself to her extent and ultimately, her best: “A motto that I always say to myself is to be unusual; be unique… I think we’re all deviant in our own way.” Makeup is the tool that Stephanie chose to express herself with. She first started teaching herself by watching YouTube videos, reading books and magazines, and picking up anything that was makeup related. “I just never stopped learning.” Although makeup is a personal expression to Stephanie, she also uses it to build relationships with those around her. When building characters on the facial canvas of her models, Stephanie takes the time to explain the process and the necessary applications to ensure that her mad scientist creatures feel safe in their transformations. And when they open their eyes to their metamorphosis, their reactions are instantaneous: “[To them, they] love it… more of an ‘Oh wow, I never would have done this any other time’ ...This is a once in a lifetime opportunity [for us].” With the biggest costume holiday just around the corner, Stephanie has expert tips for anybody striving to do their own Halloween makeup. With the right tutorials, practice and products, anyone can be a mad scientist in their own right!

Halloween makeup, there’s tons of makeup videos and tutorials that you can always start from.

For products, I would recommend using cream based makeup products. They’re easier to smooth and blend, and because of that, it becomes easier to change the shape of the face, the bone structure, with the highlight and contour.

The most important makeup tools are the makeup brushes, so you want to invest in good quality makeup tools. You don’t want to use dollar store brushes. You want to use brushes that have a good handle on them, and then what’s called a ferrule.

A ferrule is anything that connects the brush hairs to the handles. And inside the ferrules is what glues the hairs. So when you’re using an inexpensive brush, and you’re using makeup, and you’re cleaning your brush, and the glue in the ferrule actually breaks down, then what you’re looking for is a good quality brush where that’s not going to happen to you. Because when that happens, it will affect the way your makeup looks. Because there will be hairs on your face, it won’t be applied properly. So just start with investing in brushes, because they will last you a lifetime, and you’re not wasting your money constantly looking for brushes. So I would start there. There’s lots of good brands, Mac, Makeup Forever, etc.

For each makeup, you want to set them with a translucent makeup powder or spray so it lasts longer and it won’t run throughout the night.

There’s lots of palettes now that are designed for your skin type and your eye colour. I always refer to the colour wheel, we were all taught that in elementary school. You have your primary colours, and then you have your secondary colours, and when you look at the colour wheel, you know that what’s opposite the colour wheel is suitable to that colour. So if you have blue eyes, then you want to use purples and plums. Just try to pick palettes that are already put together based on eye colour and skin colour. It’s just a lot easier starting out. It’ll say right there: warm skin tone; cooler skin tone; blue eyes; green eyes, etc.

I would recommend cream makeup to start out with, but I don’t discourage anyone from doing airbrush makeup. I mean, some people get the hang of it really quickly. I guess it really depends on what’s your budget when you’re starting out? Cream based can be anywhere from $15$40. An airbrushed makeup you’re starting higher, with the airbrush, compressor, and paint. CLOSE LOOK 2019

“We are here to transform all lifetimes in this lifetime and it is possible, it just requires work.” Every moment will be worth it as it gets easier and easier. I had a realization a while ago and it applies to everyone and is great encouragement to keep moving forward when things get tough as you look into all that comes up for you. Inside all of us is our true selves, waiting patiently for us to step up and re-member who we really are and clear all that we are not that comes in the form of emotions and limiting decisions due to trauma this lifetime and others. As you remove these layers the understanding that there is nothing more to do will come into your consciousness and all else will automatically move into alignment.

As you find your way back to peace, joy, love and harmony, letting go of the need to be right and forgiving others and yourself for all the lessons, the connection to Mother Earth and all things Sacred naturally opens. SELF-DISCIPLINE, THE KEY TO YOUR

SUCCESS

LAWS OF SUCCESS ARE AKIN TO UNIVERSAL LAWS OF NATURE:

Whether you like it or not, Law of Gravity works. Exactly the same way, Laws of Success are also universal and work, whether you believe in it or not. Life is full of laws that both govern and define our success. Let me define 3 key elements of the Law of Sowing and Reaping:

You reap what you sow. You reap more than you sow. You reap later than you sow. For every disciplined effort, there are multiple rewards. If you render unique service, your reward will be multiplied. If you’re fair and honest and patient with others, your reward will be multiplied. If you give more than you expect to receive, your reward is more than you expect. But remember: The key word here Discipline. Self-discipline is defined as the desire to do something, which you need to do, when you need to do, even if you don’t feel like doing it. It’s vital that we make self-discipline as a way of life.

Bullies I ain’t going to be your victim, I ain’t yours to be hurt I ain’t going to be bullied anymore No more, Bullied No more, Why should I be? I stand with my head high You can’t define my identity I’m in charge, I’m in control But Bullies you look all the same With a wrong thought to get the kick, To feel the punch Bullies you ain’t anyone’s future I feel sad for you, You are powerless You hurt yourself by going this path of dirt Bullies STOP your self, Bullies STOP your journey This will get you nowhere, no where Work to be called a better person, If you want to look cool, Be a better person if you want to be cool You will find peace and love everywhere By Sanya Dhingra

Silence

On the floor I sit, as a steady flow of heartbreak escapes my eyes. A shattered heart, and a soul as cold as stone join my thoughts in a marriage of agony. Blinded by tears and bitterness for someone I never had, or wanted. All this time I knew he didn’t love me back, but his affectionate words tangled me in a web of disguised emotion. The bright spark of joy and warmth has left my soul, leaving it darker than obsidian. “Never again” I manage to sputter out in an anguish filled voice. “I’m never falling in love again”. And now I just sit in silence, making the decision to never love anyone with so much passion again. I’ll never hand over my unconditional love to another person. Maybe someday, someone will show me genuine happiness, but until then, I will watch him fall so madly in love with another, just to see his heart break. Exactly as he broke mine. “I would like to congratulate CloseLook on their efforts to showcase youth voices in our community. Providing a platform for youth to share their stories is powerful not only because of the positive experience and skills that the participants gain, but also because their stories can inspire others to make a positive difference in their community and lives. All the best to the CloseLook Team! - Ken Hardie, MP Surrey, Port Kells

It is with immense pleasure that I write this letter of support for Close Look Foundation. The people at the heart of Close Look have long dedicated themselves to supporting youth of diverse backgrounds from across the Lower Mainland. The myriad forms of support that such youth receive - informational, community promotion, increased social inclusion, and intergenerational transmission of knowledge and relationship-building. These areas are of particular relevance to our communities, which are currently striving to address drugs, gang violence, and crime in ineffective and meaningful ways. Organizations, such as Close Look, that commit to youth empowerment are vital elements to a robust social fabric. I look forward to more invaluable work from our friends at Close Look. Yours Sincerely,

Jagrup Brar, MLA Surrey Fleetwood CLOSE LOOK 2019
