Every article in this magazine has come from people who believe in “making a difference” in some way. I would like to thank all those writers who have put their time and effort to contribute to this magazine. In this edition, our feature article is on “Homosexuality”. Why? Because I have seen people give negative attitude and discrimination towards Gays & Lesbians, especially in India where I come from. It hurts to know that Homosexuality is still a crime in 72 countries. Where once it was a taboo topic to talk about , in other countries like Canada, “homosexuality” is being discussed openly. Here everyone is treated equally & has freedom to choose their companion according to their sexual orientation. Here at Close Look, my team and I respect everyone regardless of factors like race, caste, color, creed, gender or sexuality. And lastly I would like to give a big thank you to all our supporters for believing in my vision. Especially, my heart felt thanks to God, my team, my family and friends for being part of my journey with Close Look. I hope this issue is able to make a difference. Is it too late? Fighting Mental Health...

“Real people, real stories”

“We define mental health in two segments; clinically and medically proven mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar and depression, etc and these illnesses are being treated through drugs and through various physical and mental activities. We also take moral mental health into serious consideration because someone prone to intensive lying, intolerance and egoistic attitude is also suffering with a mental illness which is not clinically proven and todays world peace is lost not because of people suffering with schizophrenia or bipolar rather due to egoism and that’s what can to be treated through the social platforms as “Close Look”!

isn’t your typical rock band recipe. Take together two Edmontonians, Brett and Juliano, who clicked in high school. Throw in a spontaneous trip to Australia, a dash of alcohol (okay, maybe multiple bottles of booze), and packages of cheap noodles to nourish the hangovers, and with it you’ll find yourself a brotherhood. “We developed a nickname the Noodle Boys with everyone in the hostel [in Australia]. It was kinda a running joke that we kept because we’re still friends to this day.” Almost a decade later down the road, The Noodle Boys packed their bags and moved to Vancouver in pursuit of their rock n’ roll dreams. Although The Noodle Boys is a new band, they’re already vibing with the alternative rock crowd in the city, and booked with performances in our city’s nightlife culture. Why Vancouver? There are many alternative bands here that The Noodle Boys look up to, such as Dopey’s Robe, Cheap Jacuzzi, Lambsbreath and Crystal Kelly.

Despite some initial negative reactions, The Noodle Boys are still passionate about music. For them, music is an emotional outlet. Brett: I feel like I am a pretty emotionally-based character. minority groups. Their advice? Brett: The initial wording would be ‘Just Do It!’ I would also say, for me, I’m lucky enough not to be a minority, but I face the same thing where people have said to me it’s just a fantasy, it will never happen. But I would just recommend to just go for it. If you feel so strongly about it, you have to take a chance and take a step in the right direction and see what’s going to

happen. And the reward that you will receive for chasing after something --especially for music, where it’s just an expression, a representation of yourself and how you feel --the reward is going to be priceless. There’s no job or career that can give this feeling of displaying your emotions out to people. And if that’s really how you feel then you have to do it. Even if it doesn’t work out, you can always look back and say you did it. Juliano: That’s exactly it. I think a lot of times the people closest to you, whether they know it or not, they’re going to try to motivate you out of your dream, or whatever it is you’re trying to pursue. And it’s tough because you love those people, but you gotta overlook that and pursue that. And it’s not going to be easy all the time. And when it’s not easy, you know you’re doing it right because you’re doing something different from everyone else. For those looking out for The Noodle Boys, you can definitely find them where the vibe is good. Brett: We like to say before a show, regardless of how we play, we’re going to be good energy and we’re going to have a good time. I want people in the crowd, whether it’s their music or not, to look up to us and see what we’re doing and just enjoy themselves. Juliano: I think if someone came to our show and they couldn’t actually hear the music, they would feel the vibe, the energy in the room, from the person sitting beside you. And I think it would be contagious… they will have a good time.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES

WEIGHT

LOSS JOURNEY

My weight loss journey began on May 05, 2014 because from that day on, my life took

a turning point to better myself as a person. The weight gain all started when I worked at Tim Hortons which resulted in me gaining 70 lbs from excessive overeating and no physical activity after graduating from high school. There’s a couple of things that sparked my interest to begin my fitness journey. The first reason was when a friend tried setting me up on a date with someone, I was rejected because of being overweight, as I was over 250 pounds. The “Extra-Large” formal shirt I was wearing in my mirror selfie barely fit, and I had to keep the upper buttons open to prevent my neck from disappearing. The second reason had to do with the physical aspect of how I felt. At the time of being rejected by a potential date, I was enrolled in the Healthcare Assistant program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. During the clinical practicums, I would be short of breath and I needed lots of breaks during the care I was providing. Along with the shortness of breath, I also experienced knee, lower back, and foot pain during and after practice. At one point, a patient asked me a question which I remember even to this day, “You are at the verge of exploding yourself, so how will you manage to take care of us?” That question or comment really made an influence for me to turn my life around. In addition, I would feel really embarrassed when I attended family functions and would constantly worry about my blazer or trousers ripping on the dancefloor. The exercise and diet program all started on May 05, 2014 like I’ve mentioned before. I didn’t have any mentor or personal trainer to help me out during my journey because it was difficult to afford a personal trainer when I was a full time healthcare student and worked a part time job, so whatever I did for myself was on my own. For my meals, I would wake up in the morning and have a small breakfast of 2 eggs and 1 toast along with green tea, and then eat celery with turkey slices for lunch and another cup of green tea, for dinner I would have chicken noodle soup along with 4-5 pieces of crackers. Once a week on a Friday or Saturday, I indulged in a cheat meal and ate pizza, burgers, cakes, and chocolates. For exercising I started out with power-walking for 2-3 hours daily and then dancing to random music videos off my phone in my bedroom for 30-60 minutes (bhangra, shiv tandav & hip hop). By August 2014, before going to a wedding in the UK for a holiday after completing my schooling, I was down to 200 lbs and my clothing became very loose. After the holiday ended, I still stuck to my original routine of power walking and dancing til February 2016. By that time I was down to 150 pounds, but unfortunately I still was unsatisfied because I didn’t have any muscles or strength. During that month, I decided to follow a different approach and joined Goodlife Fitness for weightlifting and strength training. I worked out at Goodlife from February 2016 til March 2018 before switching to YMCA. I love how YMCA has a wide range of activities CLOSE LOOK

for people who have different fitness goals. It feels great to work out at a spacious fitness facility where you can engage in a variety of exercises such as cardio, weight training, spinning, yoga, dance, and swimming. I am currently at 160 pounds and maintaining my weight as is, a lot of this weight is muscle and healthy fat. I don’t follow any diets now and eat whatever I feel like whether it is healthy or comfort food, I just watch my portions and eat til I’m satisfied. My current exercise program takes up to 2 hours because I do full body workouts (chest, shoulders, arms, legs, abs, and cardio) and then after completing my workout, I hit the steam room and hot tub to relax my body and mind. My friends and family were my backbone for supporting me by telling me how good I looked after losing all that weight and asking me for tips or advice. I felt like I was doing a good deed by helping everyone out with the knowledge I have gained. I stay accountable to my fitness journey by posting my workouts and “mirror selfies” on Instagram and Snapchat, because at one point it was a dream for me to post all of that. For anyone who is demotivated or don’t have enough time to exercise, especially if they are capable of taking part in physical activity. Skip the excuses and make the time! If you are healthy and well, you need atleast 30 minutes of physical activity daily whether it is walking, running, dancing, or going to the gym. Just please go out there and do something, whatever it is. It is really easy to gain weight, but it takes a lot to lose it. Diet is 80% of the battle but not all diets work for everyone, because most of the time you can risk putting your body into starvation mode when cutting calories too low, which results in your body holding onto whatever fat it can take and then only having to gain all that weight back once you start going back to regular eating. The strategy I believe that has worked for me is by eating balanced meals and also having occasional cheat meals to avoid depriving yourself. On a final note, I would like to leave the reader with a small piece of advice after finishing high school, uni, or college. Never let yourself go! Always eat and drink within your limits and remember to keep up with your physical activities as much as possible. Last but not least, my motto is to be Happy, Hopeful, & Healthy. By Gurpreet Singh

WORDS OF WISDOM

Different Walks of Life, Yet, The Same Destination.. “What if God was moody?”

www.universalpeacewisdom.org

I wonder if God was moody, what would happen? He would give us one breath and the next second, He would have a second thought. Thank God, He is not like that. I am thanking Him for being Him — strange. Why are we so moody then? One day we think whatever we are doing is a good investment of time and the following day when we have overused or misused that same thing, it becomes a wastage of time. We simply get tired of it. It means we are creatures of a questionable loyalty. One day we see favourable spiritual numbers, we think it’s the universe giving us divine messages and second day we start seeing different numbers and now we the universe is giving us different messages. Boy is this so-called universe so moody! No stability. Imagine parents, one day a mother feeds her infant and the next day she says, “I don’t want to feed him/her, it’s a waste of time.” What kind of a parent is that? I would not want her as my parent for I know she is weak-willed and staying with her will also make me weak but thank God mothers are not like that! Thank God! However, I would want to meet such a soul, with such unwavering determination that no matter what happens they stay determined and steadfast on whatever they decide. They are Godly.

Thank you Lord, for being you... CLOSE LOOK

FEATURE STORY

Born this

Way

“ When you hide things like these from your loved ones, you end up doing more da mage to yourself than good. “ My name is Bobby, I’m a 27-year-old Punjabi homosexual. Yes, homosexuality does not discriminate against your gender, nationality, or race.

When I hit puberty at 12 years old, I realized I was gay. However, I was in denial up until I was 15 years old. I thought I would be able to change myself and become “straight” as I thought this whole thing of feeling gay was a phase which I would overcome.

a girl and ruin her life, or my own, just for the sake of keeping others happy, because believe me there is a lot of that going on nowadays. There are many cases of closeted men from different cultures who are afraid to come out and be themselves in society. Many of them end up marrying girls and they still go around living a double life behind their partner’s back. Because of this conflict, two people become victims (the boy and the girl) while the family and friends are oblivious to what goes on behind closed doors. It is sad to witness all of that because no one should ever be rejected for their sexual orientation. I didn’t want to be another story like those marriages to please the family or have anything to do with the lifestyle of living a lie, of pleasing others around me by fitting into their mold of perfection

In the beginning I was perplexed about my sexuality because during the late 1990s and early 2000s when I was growing up, there wasn’t that much acceptance and resources for the LGBT community as much as there is now. I wasn’t ever afraid of my family for not accepting me because I knew I have been out of the closet to my friends, cousins, and that they would love me no matter what. co-workers for about seven years. After opening up to my Communication is always the key and I knew I would have friends, I came out of the closet to my family five years ago. to communicate my situation to them sooner or later. them in my life, because they have all made sure that I never saw the darkest day of my life regarding my sexual orientation that many homosexuals do. Initially when I came out, it was very shocking to my family, because as a kid growing up playing with Barbie Dolls they had a similar thinking I had, that this was just a phase I would eventually come out of. However, it was a very stressful topic to bring up when I finally managed to have the courage to tell my parents and family I am not into girls but liked guys instead. After explaining and educating my parents and family about how being gay is not my personal choice, that it’s a part of who I am, they told me they loved me no matter what and they were lucky to have a son like me, regardless of my sexuality. Moreover, discussing homosexuality is still considered a taboo subject in many religions. At the end of the day you must realize that you cannot live a lie for the rest of your life because sooner or later, the truth will somehow come out. When you hide things like these from your loved ones, you end up doing more damage to yourself than good. In return, this leads to familial strife and hostile relations when you are already struggling to hold on to the expectations and values of your family. You only have one life to live, so don’t waste it away by being afraid of what others think of you! Everyone in my family played an important role of providing me the support I needed during this period. Whether it’s my mom, dad, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. My brother and sister were my biggest backbones for providing me with the comfort and support I needed. My circle of friends has also been a really positive influence by providing me with the encouragement and strength I have today. Without my family and friends by my side, none of this would have been possible.

“ Homosexuality is still considered a taboo subject in many religions. But end of the day, you must realize that you can’t live a lie for the rest of your life because sooner or later, the truth comes out one way or the other. ”

I live a very normal life and can say that 95% of the time me being gay is not an issue for anyone because there is so much awareness of this topic nowadays as people are more accepting. I did though encounter a couple of oddballs last year who stated that I can change myself and become “normal” like everyone else. Long story short, I never spoke to them again after that dreadful remark. I decided early in life that I don’t need anyone’s negativity to bring me down, especially from people who don’t support you. surrounding yourself with people who have positive energy and love you for who you are. Last, but not least, I want to thank Waheguru Ji (God) for helping me make it this far in life by giving me a tremendous amount of courage and bravery to be the man I am today. Without his blessings, this would’ve been a very difficult road to travel on. Often, we hear the saying, “no one is perfect”. I disagree with it, because as God’s children, we are all considered perfect in his eyes. I am 100% supportive of same sex marriages because love is love. A gay couple is just as equal to a straight couple when it comes to falling in love. My advice to anyone reading this article is, always love yourself first, and live life to the fullest. Be Happy, Be Healthy, & Be Hopeful!

“ A gay couple is just as equal to a straight couple when it comes to falling in love with each other. ” Over the course of history, gays and lesbians have been marginalized and oppressed in many cultures, there were many places and there were also times in history when being gay was celebrated – or at least understood as a normal part of life. In today’s culture is being gay becoming a fad? or is it that in present-day society people can be more open about their sexuality because there is more acceptance and understanding or it is because people are also afraid to be ridiculed for their views against homosexuality? If you subtract yourself from the social norms and you look at society as an observer, you will come to gain an insight that not all things are created equal. Some are less, and some are more. This is exactly how sexuality works, sometimes a person is just born a certain way. Our biochemistry plays a big role in how we develop. Deficiencies in some chemicals or chromosomes can change a person. There is so much science that backs this. Post-mortem studies done on heterosexual men/women and homosexual men/women clearly shows there is science that backs up this claim. The sexually dimorphic nucleus of humans which is a cluster of cells located in the hypothalamus part of the brain is responsible of certain metabolic processes and other activities of the autonomic nervous system. This system is also in charge of sexual arousal.

SUMMER - FALL 2018

This study outlines that this sexually dimorphic nucleus that is in the brain tends to larger in heterosexual males than homosexual males. It also stated the same nucleus in homosexual males is the same size in heterosexual females. This is just one study that backs the claim that we are just born the way we are born, and we can’t change the facts that exist, even if we tried we can not undo the acts of nature without causing further destruction. If we can accept autistic, down syndrome and deformed bodies as a cause of nature, then why can’t we accept those who look at certain sex but are attracted to the same sex? This is hypocrisy of societies of today and the past and it shall exist till the day we have an equally educated civilization on earth.

Fashion is a statement, an expression, and for Beau, a psychological

trait in our lives: “I love how the depth of a new or clean shirt can boost someone’s confidence; a new outfit can help you crush a job interview, or give you a little extra pep in your step for that first date.” As a fash ionista, Beau understands the superficial and psychological implications that come with fashion. And as a charity organizer, Beau wants to highlight the role that fashion can play in transforming the homelessness scene in the Lower Mainland. “Fashion can connect youth by giving them the basic needs we forget about. youth have to live with being constantly cold, or with wet feet. What an “old” jacket may be to us… That’s a brand new jacket to them; it gives that bit of feel good back, that confidence.” So how did a fashionista pair up with a DJ and a nightlife promoter to create a charity event in support of ending homelessness? Like many millennial meetings: over pitchers of beer. Kenya, the nightlife promoter in this scene, connected the dots that evening: “Matt had mentioned to me that he wanted to throw a charity event and knowing I worked in night club and promotions, wanted to bring me on board as a producer. Around the same time Beau approached me with a vision for a fashion show/market/ dance party.” And thus birthed The Give Back, a non-profit event combining the latest in Vancouver fashion and music, with all proceeds supporting Vancouver Covenant House.

CIRCLE OF KINDNESS

Altruism isn’t for a day. It isn’t even for cause. It really is a habit; one that spreads the

smile in its own special way. It touches people. It creates an unspoken, untold bond that has the power to bind strangers, even if for just a moment, and cause the ripple effect to follow through. And this is why we bring to you the Kindness Circle, to recount the stories you can be inspired from, stories you can pass along and stories that will melt your heart.

By Ira Saini

I will share the story of a time in my life

when I felt like everything that could go wrong had gone wrong, and kept getting worse. It felt like everyone I loved or everything I wanted and had was slipping away from my hands and I could do nothing to stop it. My job was suddenly in great danger after eight years of working as hard as I could and giving it the best I had. My husband

and I weren’t talking because he was depressed and had demanded his space to figure things out and re-evaluate his decisions. My parents were really sick, with more bad days than good, and I was going about my daily tasks in a daze. One day I would lose three bus tickets in three hours, and the next day I would come back to a broken side view mirror of my car, with no trace of what happened or who did it. One day I would twist my ankle running around, and the next day I would be running to the hospital to get procedures completed that were so invasive that I didn’t even want to think about it. In that period of time, it honestly felt like all the stars had aligned to work against me, and I wasn’t really sure how I was going to make it through. During this time, the kindness of one of my friends touched me the most. We could barely talk about everything that was going on, knowing full well that any conversation on this topic would lead to nothing but incessant crying for hours on my part. So she called me every evening and just asked one question, without fail. The question was, “Can you tell me five things that you were grateful for today?” Some days the answer came more easily than other days, but she was persistent, CLOSE LOOK

and then led the conversation of talking about happier times and remembering the good old days. As simple as it was, I unconsciously started looking forward to these conversations every day. Looking back, her kindness and

“Can you tell me five things that you were grateful for today?” pushing me to have some positive moments every day is really what kept me going. I encourage anyone going through a rough patch to try this exercise. I will forever be grateful to my friend for being so patient with me, and for not only checking in on me every day, but for making every day feel a little less grim, and a little more hopeful. - Michelle, Age : 32 Side blurb: Do you have stories of kindness that you would like to share? Would you like to get published and inspire fellow readers to be kind? Email us your personal “kindness story” or one that you know about and we will select a few for every issue.

CIRCLE OF KINDNESS

The most recent random act of kindness for me happened at the airport. I travel for work, and travel a lot, and so as much as I should know better and be seasoned at airport security checks, I was very tired and wasn’t paying too much attention to what I was doing. While trying to put everything on the conveyer belt, I didn’t realize how or when my engagement ring slid from my fingers and fell on the ground. My boyfriend had proposed right before the start of the trip and it was perhaps slightly loose, but I was still wearing it for the happiness it brought me. The very kind gentleman standing behind me noticed and alerted me to pick it up and take it with me. If it wasn’t for him, I would have lost one of my most precious (and expensive) pieces of jewelry, and would have never known how to get it back. I am so thankful to all the kind and good-hearted people I meet around the world. - Natalie, Age: 24

SPEAK UP

“ SUCCESS IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE ” Pressure is something I know most peo-

ple in their early 20’s feel. The pressure to know what you’re doing with your life, to graduate, to find a stable job as soon as you finish school --overall to just be “successful”. It has been a difficult journey to convince myself that I’m not a failure because I’m not where I want to be right now. Society and the fast-paced environment I’m surrounded with has engraved in my head that at my age, I should be on my way to starting a career and possibly a family. For a while, it was hard to get away from that mindset. I’ve had a lot more panic attacks and my mental health was deteriorating. I’ve only recently figured out that I’m fine and that everyone has different time frames and different versions of what “successful” means. I have heard that saying a thousand times, but you only really start believing it when you’ve taken the time to know and accept yourself. Surround yourself with people who will uplift you and be supportive. I strongly believe that everything will fall into place if you stop forcing the idea that you NEED to be successful so fast. Be more kind and patient to yourself. --Anonymous CLOSE LOOK

MAKEOVER

MAKE-UP

By Vivian Cheng

After watching a popular Chinese drama about the first

Chinese queen, Vivian Cheng was inspired to mimic the makeup for herself. Vivian was not a natural makeup artist; she never even considered it as a career prior to this exotic attempt. But as she drew the final strands on her eyes and brushed the powders off her cheeks, Vivian felt transformed. She immediately thought to herself: I want to be a makeup artist. And so, she packed her bags and flew to Vancouver to attend the world renown Blanche MacDonald makeup program, a complete 180 from her first few years studying Chinese literature in Taiwan. Despite her fears of studying abroad for the first time, Vivian knew she made the right decision: “Sometimes when I’m unhappy, and I’m doing makeup, it can make me concentrate on the makeup, and after that, I won’t feel so unhappy.”

Vivian recalls the instances her makeup artistry transformed the emotions of others around her. Recently when she did a makeover for a model who had eczema, Vivian applied moisture and makeup that accentuated a natural dewy look, with some soft contouring. After the photoshoot, the model told Vivian that the makeup made her feel confident: “It’s the first time I’ve felt so beautiful in my own skin.” From these experiences, Vivian understands the positive impact makeup can have on people physically and emotionally. But makeup isn’t just for those in the fashion business. Vivian’s also volunteered in women shelters, where she did the makeup for survivors of trauma and drug addiction. After the spa day, the manager approached the artists and told them it was the first time she’d seen the 40 SUMMER - FALL 2018

women laugh so much. “Makeup can make people very happy… It’s gratifying for me and the [participants].” Everyone can use makeup for both a transformative look to an emotional experience; you don’t have to be in school to enjoy all that makeup has to offer! Vivian has some expert tips for those who are new to makeup altogether, or those who are looking to improve their skills:

1.

You always have to tone and moisturize your skin in the morning. The toner will cleanse your pores and prepare your face for further cosmetic applications. Moisture is extremely important because without it, your skin will crack and the makeup won’t be able to stand.

2.

Sunscreen can be used as a primer, as it protects your skin from external damage and it also blends very well with foundation.

3.

Even though many companies promote their skin coverage lines, if you have really good skin, you won’t need it. Foundation is good for an overall lighter face coverage. However, if you have dark spots, acne or scars, it’s best to use concealer on those points as it’s more pigmented.

if a person doesn’t have eyebrows that fit their face, then it will look like they don’t have energy. Lips can always be done on the road.

5.

Always set your makeup, with either a powder or a setting spray. It can make your makeup stay longer and extend their quality.

4.

If you have limited time with your makeup, the most important feature to accent are the eyebrows, because

For those who are just learning to pick different palettes for their face, eyes, and lips, Vivian also has some tips regarding colours and prices:

1.

In order to select products for yourself, you have to try them first. So if you don’t have much money to continuously buy and try out new products, then you can simply go to drug stores like London Drugs or Shoppers Drug Mart, or Sephora, which has the open palettes for you to choose and try.

2.

For foundation you need to try the colours, textures, and smells that suit you --yes sometimes they have a really strong smell! To choose the foundation, you can put them on your face, or your chin, or your arms. a. Sometimes, especially in the summer, we have different colours between our necks and our face. And even on your face there are two to three colours. Sometimes it’s more yellow, red, green and purple, things like that. As such, it’s more accurate to try the palettes on your chin. Right now my favourite brand is Studio FX.

3.

If you want to choose an eyeshadow palette, just try every colour you like, and you will find what suits you. For beginners, I don’t recommend using eyeshadows that

are pigmented too heavily: it will sometimes fall down, and if you want to clean it, it takes a long time. For beginners I recommend trying more delicate pigments and textures that suit you.

4.

And for lips, similar to the eyeshadow, try every colour, and see how you like to do your makeup.

5.

A professional brand I recommend for beginners that’s not too expensive is NYX. Professional makeup artists use products from them because they have so much variety. Their colour correction and eye shadow palettes are very good.

6.

Be confident with makeup --don’t be afraid!

Matthew Kocel, a Vancouver-based leader in sound healing and meditation music, stated. “Before I felt like I was living without any real purpose, and underneath the surface I felt quite lost, like I didn’t belong on this planet. Maybe subconsciously I was looking for a way out.”

BODY, MIND & SPIRIT

Loss. Escape. Fear. Many of us have walked, or are still walking, a blind path of fear, constantly reaching out for distractions to bury ourselves in. But we can only bury ourselves for so long before our bodies demand a breath of life. Matthew recalls the turning point when he found a crystal quartz at the top of a mountain in Colorado. Matthew admits that it was a strange occurrence --a beautiful crystal sitting atop a mountain forlorn. He didn’t know why, but something told him to pick up the foreign object and pocket it. Shortly after, everything transformed: he was laid off from his stable job; his rock band broke up; and many people left his life. He was left with nothing. Matthew was terrified. But at the same time, he knew that this was exactly what he needed: an opportunity to start all over. And so, Matthew dove into the world of meditation to find his true self without the distractions.

Meditation & Music “Meditating saved my life,” By Matthew Kocel

As Matthew defines it, meditation is a means of letting go of superficial concerns in order to connect with who we truly are. By combining music with meditation, Matthew slowly unfolded within himself a stronger understanding of his being within the world: that we are all connected to some capacity. Integrating the use of sound furthered his knowledge when he realized that everything in life is in constant movement, vibration, and ultimately, sound. In other words, sound is CLOSE LOOK

the essence of life: “The smallest building blocks of life are vibrating fields of electronic energy which harmonized to form atoms, cells, plants, bodies, planets, stars, etc.” Matthew realized that we can tap into this knowledge to heal one another together. With his years of experiences teaching and leading meditation classes, Matthew observes that the feelings of loss he’d previously experienced is what often brings people to meditation. Matthew specializes in using music as a tool for meditation, which enhances the meditation process by helping us open an internal portal. “Music and sound can affect our mood… The music that I am currently performing and creating is specifically to help us connect with our deeper selves; the part of us that’s interconnected with all things.” After all, everything around us is an expression of sound.

opens within us. “Yet, when we have the feeling experienced through meditation or an ecstatic music experience, everything changes. It’s a true game changer when we have that direct feeling of existing beyond the boundaries of our skin.” Matthew observes that things can shift quite rapidly. “I have been very blessed to bear witness to this concept continuously manifesting within people through physical shifts, emotional shifts... Shifts in the way of thinking, even spiritual healing.”

Meditation and mindfulness can be intimidating for beginners. There’s a misconception that meditation is about making your mind go blank, and some people are really afraid of that concept --that they’ll open themselves up to something bad. The truth is, meditation is really about developing concentration. The breath is just a natural, easy way to pursue that, because you’ll be breathing whenever you’re alive. In the meditation process, When we recognize that we’re all inter- you start to realize that you’re observing connected through vibrations and use your own thoughts. Then you start to realmusic or sound as a tool to connect with ize that you’re not actually your thoughts. this concept, a doorway of perception You’re a mere observer to your thoughts.

“Yet, when we have the feeling experienced through meditation or an ecstatic music experience, everything changes. It’s a true game changer when we have that direct feeling of existing beyond the boundaries of our skin.”

SUMMER - FALL 2018

In other words, you are a separate being within yourself. This lesson may at first come across as a contradiction, but slowly realizing that actually aids you in recognizing your true essence within the world. The first step is to just concentrate on the breath. If you’re just starting out, here’s an easy guide that can help you develop a healthy habit:

1.

Firstly, turn off all devices, or potential distractions. Claim that space for yourself and allow that space for something to happen

2.

Sit comfortably. Lying down is okay, but it’s really easy to fall asleep. You don’t have to hold lotus position or anything complicated.

3.

Tell your body, portion by portion, to relax. For example, you can start with your feet, and say, “Feet, relax.” Then move onto your ankles and say, “Ankles, relax.” And so on.

4.

Watch the breath. Literally. Observe the feeling of the air as it moves

in and out of your body. When thoughts come up, or any distraction, use that as a reminder to come back to the breath.

5.

Every time you come back to the breath, you’re building a little muscle in your brain that will help you focus in the long term.

When we recognize that we’re all interconnected through vibrations and use music or sound as a tool to connect with this concept, a doorway of perception opens within us.

LAW OF INTENTIONALITY DILEEP NIGAM Success Coach, Trainer & MotivationalSpeaker

“Internal growth is not accidental, you got to be intentional about it.” – John Maxwell WHAT IS SUCCESS? How do you define success? Earl Nightingale, the famous author, writer and speaker defines success as “Progressive realization of a worthwhile goal”. If you deeply look at this definition, there are two components to it. The first and the most important component is “a worthwhile goal.” There has to be a destination before a journey can be undertaken and the second component is “progressive realization”. It means Success is a journey and not a destination and you progressively attain it, one step at a time. REALISTIC OPTIMISM Let me bring you back to 2010 and share a small story with you. I was in Singapore and was operating as commercial head for the large French multinational, having a great life and career. The family was well settled and we had been in Singapore for 17 years. At the peak of my career, I challenged myself once again and decided to migrate to Canada in January, 2010. I had never worked in Canada but having taken the decision, I started preparing myself well in advance. I got on to identifying my growth gaps and started working on them before I landed in Canada. I had never worked in hydro-power industry and started studying it. I undertook several accreditations on the commercial law in North America and even sent my engineering degree in advance, for accreditation to BCIT. I started studying North American work culture to fully prepare myself before landing in Canada and be ready to take up any job opportunities aligned with my career profile. Within a couple of months after landing in Canada, I was hired by BC Hydro in a management position and worked there successfully for six years. Now, why did I share this story? I have always been optimistic about my success in life and career, but I challenged myself one more time in life, at the primer of my career, because the dream of giving the best life to my family was paramount to me and close to my heart but I prepared myself well before landing in Canada. I was realistically optimistic about my future in Canada. CLOSE LOOK

SUMMER - FALL 2018

Law of Intentionality says “Growth, specially internal growth, is not accidental. You need to be intentional about it.” Internal growth is not like the body that grows with age. You need to be intentional about internal growth. Why many people don’t grow internally, because of certain reasons called growth gaps. These could be: I don’t know where to grow or may be the timing is not right or we don’t know the way to grow. But there’s another key element which holds us back from growing internally. It’s called fear factor. The two biggest fears faced by people are the fear of failing and the fear of being laughed at. John Maxwell asks, is your motivation to succeed bigger than your fear? If not, feed your belief so much that it will starve your fear

Why many people don’t grow internally?

THE GROWTH PROCESS

With that in mind, how do we grow and how do we prepare a Growth Plan? There are a couple of steps to that.

First step: ‘Commit yourself to grow’. Nothing gets accomplished without commitment.

Second step: ‘Announce it and make it public’. Share it with someone who would uplift you and encourage you to accomplish your growth plan.

• Third step: ‘Identify your areas of growth’ but don’t talk about growing in 10 areas. Pick two to five growth areas, but preferably two at a time.

a) First growth area: Area of choice, which could be a life skill such as self-discipline, your belief system or your attitude.

b) Second growth area: Relating to your professional skills e.g. I had to prepare myself for the hydro-power industry and had to get accredited in commercial laws in North America.

pertaining to life and career. He is CEO of

has deep passion for coaching, mentoring and helping people overcome the issues

Fourth step: Commit one hour per day into working on these areas. The process will involve preparation, practice and reflection. So, sit down in a quiet corner, identify your growth gaps, prepare yourself how you wish to work on it, act on it and reflect on what you accomplished. Share the progress with someone who you believe would cheer you up, applaud you and encourage you. Acknowledgements: “15 Invaluable Laws of Growth” by John C Maxwell CLOSE LOOK
