A word from the Editor...

Right, I’ve promised myself that I won’t mention the weather this time.

Really, I’m not going to say anything about the lack of sunshine.

Honestly, I’m not going to talk about it...

What I am going to say is goodbye to Leon Emirali – and a huge ‘Thank you’ for stepping in as advertising manager these past few months. And I’m also going to say hello to Sarah Chatwin – previously a co-editor of Spotlight – who will now be in charge of all our lovely advertising.

Now, if you do want to get out and enjoy the weather (seriously, don’t get me started) it’s National Parks Week from 27th July to 4th August. There are lots of events planned, from butterfly hunts and open air theatre to al fresco jazz and arts and crafts. Our Value for July is

Courage

We try to link our values to key events during the year – sometimes the Church calendar, and at other times related to school life. Our Y4 children are all moving on to new schools and the children within the school are moving to new classes.

It’s a challenging time for all of them and so ‘Courage’ seems an appropriate value to study at this time. We hope that the children will be able to approach their new challenges with confidence and we The Lion in The Wizard of Oz receives his medal for Courage welcome your support in helping your child to articulate and understand their feelings at this emotional time.

Opening of Acorn Nursery Class, September 2013 Registration is now open for children born up until 31st March 2011 We’ve had a very positive response from parents in the village and the booking forms are coming in quickly now! By the time this edition of Spotlight is published our staff appointments for the new nursery will be complete and we look forward to welcoming our new manager and her team in September together with our new Acorn Class children.

We would urge new parents to keep an eye on the ‘Nursery’ section of our website (www.stmaryslower.info) as there’s lots of information available including dates and times of events we’re holding so that parents and their children can come into school to familiarise themselves with the new nursery before September. Registration forms are also available on the website together with a ‘Parent Information’ pack. Could we also ask that parents let us know as quickly as they can about what hours they require for their children.

Clophill through the years

The old Bedford to Luton road Long before the A507 east-west bypass was built in 1975 and before the dual carriageways were built to the north and south in 1938, the A6 used to run through the area known as The Green at the west end of the village.

The A6 road from Bedford came down the hill past the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and Diggins’ Garage to a junction. The road from Ampthill and Maulden joined it from the west. It then turned left past the Flying Horse and continued along the south side of The Green past the lockup and pound then over the old bridge and south past the Primitive Methodist Chapel to join the current A6 road at the point where there’s now a filling station.

There was a wall to the west of The Flying Horse which had to be demolished to make way for the new road south. Behind the wall was Maulden Cottage, the home of the two spinster daughters of Captain Moore, a JP who had the lockup built in 1851.

The old bridge, which has been demolished and replaced with a modern one, had been the main river crossing since at least the 18th century.

Flying Horse public house was a popular inn in the old coachingdays for travellers from London to the north, and would have been a staging post where the horses were changed. Later there was a bus garage in the yard where the buses were stored overnight.

With the coming of mechanised transport the old bridge became an accident black spot.

Medical staff were standing by at the weekends to deal with the frequent collisions that occurred there.

To the east side of the bridge was a ford where animals could be watered or containers filled.

There are four large trees on The Green; three are European Limes and one is a Small-Leaved Looking west to the wall at Maulden Cottage Lime. The photos, taken in the 1900s, show that they were a good size then so they must be well over 100 years old.

The two triangles of grass are registered as a village green under the Commons Registration Act 1965. This area is very small for a village green so it probably came about more as a traffic junction than a traditional common.

The Hunt used to meet on The Green on Boxing Days before fox hunting became unpopular, and a VE-day party was held there to celebrate the end of the war in Europe.

Even though the through traffic has been diverted away from this area it’s still dominated by vehicles, both parked and entering and leaving the village.

As reported in last month’s Spotlight, Zig-Zag is closing after the summer term, but we have one last event to share with you. On 20th June, the fire crew from Ampthill came to the village hall to give the children a fire safety talk.

Crew managers Chris Swallow and Simon Easton, along with firefighters Ross Mann and Dom Gernon, talked to the parents about home safety, including testing smoke alarms and planning an escape route out of the house in the event of fire. Meanwhile, the children learnt about the dangers of touching matches and lighters, and to call 999 if they saw a fire.

The children got to look at the firefighter clothes and tried on the helmets. One youngster asked where the goggles were – and in fact there are special helmets for underwater fire fighting.

There was also a question from one mum about the fireman’s lift - apparently they’re not allowed to do it anymore as it’s too scary!

Clophill & District Flower Club In June we welcomed the return of Joyce Furssedon to give a demonstration with the title of ‘Images of Nature’. Or rather, as Joyce put it, ‘Disasters of Nature’! She explained that some of the features and actions of nature are more dramatic and more interesting to interpret as designs. She’s helped by her husband Micky, who makes all her fantastic and imaginative containers, and her wonderful garden where she grows a wide range of foliage and some of the flowers that she incorporated into her arrangements.

The ‘disasters’ included a tornado, lightening, a volcano and a rock fall.

Each arrangement was different with lots of contrasting shapes, styles and beautiful flowers. The tornado had twists and shapes giving the design movement, and orchids rotating upwards. The volcano was represented by an interesting piece of wood with orange roses cascading down the sides.

Joyce finished her demonstration by creating an iceberg, using a large Perspex pyramid and several placements of icy-white flowers including a rose aptly named Iceberg.

The members and visitors were all keen to win an arrangement in the raffle and nine ladies left the meeting carrying a large design.

Useful tip Carnations are excellent value as they last a long time. If a bloom needs coaxing to open, gently squeeze the sides and brush the top – or you can blow gently onto the petals.

Pre-School News Hello! We are Chris Martin and Imogen Godfrey, both previously of ZigZag preschool, and we have an exciting new proposal for the village. We hope to provide an inspiring and stimulating new Pre-school which will be the natural step between Clophill Toddlers and the Nursery class at St Mary’s, supporting your child’s development from 2 years old until they’re ready to move up to ‘big school’.

As Early Years Practitioners we see the importance of seeing the child as an individual and recognising that they each have different needs and develop at different times.

In the setting of Clophill Village Hall we have access to a fantastic outdoor area and we intend to go out in all weathers using the sky as our roof and the earth as our carpet. We will particularly promote both creative and messy play and develop understanding through storytelling and songs. We can write out names in shaving foam, notice changes in consistency when making mud pies and act out the life cycle of a butterfly.

We’re going to use and expand upon the many connections we have within the village and surrounding area offering opportunities to use natural materials with a focus on repurposing and recycling, and to explore safely the element of risk-taking, known to be vitally important in every child’s development into rounded, confident and independent learners.

The transition from one place of learning to the next can be quite a confusing time for children of any age. We want to provide the children in the village with the stepping stones to move from one stage to the next with confidence and optimism, thus consolidating and developing the bonds and friendships they’ve made along the way, some from as early as Toddlers.

We’re not just trying to support our local families – we’d also like to offer our educational experience to the neighbouring villages. We feel that by operating our Preschool from Clophill Village Hall we would be helping to support the infrastructure of the village we live in.

About us...

Chris Martin (Qualified Nursery Nurse) Most people know me as the Leader of ZigZag Preschool. I’ve been at the Preschool since my son started there in 2008, graduating to the Leader position at the beginning of 2012. I bring a passion for exploration and investigation of the world around us, and take a very hands-on approach to learning. I have a smallholding on the edge of the village and am surrounded by chickens, geese, ducks, sheep and pigs and enjoy living the outdoors life.

Imogen Godfrey (Post Graduate Certificate in Education and specialist in Early Years) I’m a relative newcomer to Clophill with over 10 years experience in Early Years education, where on several occasions I transformed classes to become best practise. I studied at Art College (as this is my passion) and also have a science degree in Environment and Development. I place huge value on children learning creatively, be that through mixed media such as paint, glue and collage, the use of malleable materials in messy play or through songs and storytelling. My son attends St Mary’s Reception class and my younger daughter will make the move from preschool to the new Nursery class.

News from Clophill Heritage Trust

The Eco-lodge We’re pleased and relieved to say that the installation of the 5 Eco-lodges, including wardens’ quarters as shown above, was completed at the end of May. The timber cladding is cedar and will take time to weather into its natural silver colour.

The funding requirements were such that the works had to be completed by 31st May 2013 and, given that the contract with Ashe Construction of Hitchin was not ‘signed’ until 19th April, this left a remarkably short five-week time-frame.

Success was achieved through the positive response and enthusiasm of the contractors, and through off-site ‘factory’ methods of manufacture, carried out at the same time that the ground works were still in progress. It was also a period which placed considerable demands upon members of the Heritage Trust, particularly Ali Bradbury, John Wright and Richard Hudson.

Our local contractor supporting the project, ‘Materials Movement’, returned to site on 20th June to complete connections and ground works ready for Ashe to complete its finishings next month.

The photo opposite shows evidence of what the Old Gault Pit once contained in the form of rubber tyres, rubble and builders waste…now cleared up!

News from Clophill Heritage Trust continued St Mary’s Old Church ruin Clophill Heritage Trust entered into a 125-year lease with the freehold owners Central Bedfordshire Council on 24th May 2013. The ‘restoration’ works to the old church ruin will be under the direction of Caroe Architecture of Cambridge, and following appointment of the chosen contractors it’s hoped that repairs will commence in July 2013.

Clophill Parish Action and Heritage Trust On Friday 14th June, Ali Bradbury, Sarah Chatwin and Barry Breed, on behalf of Clophill Heritage Trust, signed and presented certificates to B.TEC level 3 students at Bedford college. These are 3rd year students studying Building Surveying, who as part of their course undertook a project based on the Eco-lodge site. Their presentations were most professional and it was clear that they had worked hard over a period of some six months.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We’ve had a positive response to our initial appeal, especially from younger people, but are still looking for more helpers of all ages.

Christian Aid Collection ‘Thank You’ It’s not the easiest, or indeed sometimes the most pleasant (especially when the weather is inclement), of tasks to walk the roads and lanes of Clophill firstly to deliver – and then to collect – charity envelopes. But in our village there are some wonderful, dedicated folk who do this as an annual event and even take on extra areas – and others who are more than willing to fill in – when there is a need.

This year is no exception and to this end 18 people delivered and then collected Christian Aid envelopes on behalf of the charity. Between them they collected a staggering £1,539.92 including a very generous donation. (This doesn’t include the 25% extra from Gift Aid through the £461 accumulated via the Gift Aid forms.)

Clophill is a very special village and, knowing that these past years have seen a tightening of many belts, your generosity to those in worse straits than ours is very humbling.

So, on behalf of Christian Aid, ‘Thank you very much indeed’ to those 18 who trudged the streets (at least twice) and to all of you who kindly gave to such a wonderful charity.

To quote from Christian Aid literature: ‘Christians Aid’s vision is to bring an end to poverty around the world, by tackling its root causes as well as its effects. We help people of all faiths and none. We currently work through 578 partner organisations in 48 countries, providing urgent, practical and effective assistance, giving communities the support and skills to find their own solutions to poverty.’

Come into the kitchen with Christine Fellini

A taste of summer Just in case we ever get a summer this year I wanted to share this recipe for pasta salad. It’s very versatile, quick, easy and economical – so give it a try.

SUMMER PASTA SALAD • 1 medium red onion • 1 sweet yellow pepper • 1 sweet red pepper • 10 pitted black olives 1.

• 80g tuna in oil • 350g short pasta • 200g mozzarella

• small bunch flat-leaf parsley • extra virgin olive oil • salt & freshly ground black pepper

Roast the peppers under the grill – turning a couple of times to ensure they are roasted on all sides.

Allow to cool enough to handle, then remove the skin and seeds. Cut into thin strips and place in a large bowl.

Cut the mozzarella into small cubes, thinly slice the red onion, quarter the olives, finely chop the parsley, flake the tuna – and add everything to the bowl.

Season to taste.

Boil the pasta in abundant salted water until ‘al dente’ – follow the instructions on the packet.

When the pasta is cooked, drain it well and add 3 tbsp of olive oil to prevent it from sticking together.

When the pasta is cold, add it to the other ingredients in the bowl.

Keep the pasta salad in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

THE CHEAT’S GUIDE TO BEING A DOMESTIC GODDESS Denture cleaning tablets Put tablets down the loo to get rid of stains below the water line. Especially good in this hard water area.

Vinegar and soda crystals Both are great for removing limescale.

Plus, if you use a scoop of soda crystals in with your normal washing powder, it means you can use half the recommended amount.

Car wax Rub some clear car wax over your bathroom tiles and the water won’t stick. As we’re in a hard water area the shower cubicle doors and tiles look great until the next shower.

Dear Editor

At around 4pm on Saturday 1st June 2013, my cat, Tigger, returned to the house with a rear leg wound, after being out for 2-3 hours.

I had to take him to the emergency vet as he was bleeding and in pain. The vet subsequently extracted one .22 air gun pellet which had glanced off its fibula bone (chipping a piece off on entry) and lodged under the skin. A photo of the recovered pellet is shown opposite.

Tigger continues to make what I hope will be a full recovery. He was, according to the vet, a very lucky boy.

This notice is sent to all the residents of Great Lane as a warning that if you own a cat, it’s at risk from an unscrupulous gun person in the area...

Clophill Parish Council Notes from the Parish Council and the Annual Parish Meetings held on 25th June 2013

(Readers are reminded that these notes are a resume only, official minutes are available both on the internet and notice boards. All official correspondence should be sent to the parish clerk and not individual councillors.)

Public Question Time There was one question from a member of the public. It concerned the recent approval of the gypsy site in The Causeway and asked who will monitor the application of the conditions attached to the approval. Our District Councillors explained the process of approving all the condition implementation by CBC ensuring that they meet the standards required.

Police Report The council received a report from Bedfordshire Police regarding crime within the village. There was one case of the theft from a car and two other motor vehicle offences. However, just because we haven’t had any other serious offences we must be vigilant and think about prevention of crime. Keep your homes and vehicles secure. Don’t leave keys in doors and windows that have locks, remove them and put them somewhere safe. If you see something suspicious, phone the police and let them know. If you want help with crime prevention Bedfordshire Police will assist with this free service.

The Lands Committees As most will know, damage was recently caused to the Lock Up at The Green by a bus. Thankfully the damage looked worse than it was and we’ve now had a survey by specialist builders and quotations submitted to the bus company insurers. It’s hoped that within the next few weeks The Lock Up will not be returned to ‘good as new’ but as it should be – one of our old, venerable and historic buildings.

• Quotations have also been received for the removal of the old footbridge which sits to the side of the new bridge at The Green and is of course redundant. A firm has been selected and it is hoped that the contract will be completed before the winter.

• At last we have found a firm to supply two new salt and grit bins for the village.

An order has been placed, and delivery is expected in the next four to eight weeks.

• The parish council is aware of the poor state of some of the roadways within the village. A meeting is being requested between the council and CBC with the contractor (Amey) to rectify these problems.

• The new defibrillator has now been placed outside the post office for use in the case of suspected heart attacks. The Heart Star Charity in conjunction with the supplier Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have agreed to give villagers a familiarisation/ awareness course. As soon as we know the venue, date and time this will be publicised.

The PC had supported the application but expressed grave concerns regarding mud on the road and damage to the kerb on Shefford Road. The approval contains a number of strict conditions to overcome these concerns, including drainage, work on the exit, surfacing, kerbing on Shefford Road and provision of a wheel-cleaning facility at the exit.

Clophill Parish Council Continued Appeal to Government Inspectorate Granted Appeal APP/P0240/A/13/2191178 Location: Dunclyn, Shefford Road Proposal: Conversion of existing stables to ancillary dwelling Applicant: Mr J Hammer The appeal was against the CBC Refusal of Application CB/12/02629/FULL for the conversion of unfinished and unused stables at the rear of the garden into a single-bedroom annex for the house. The PC had supported CBC in opposing this application. The Planning Inspectorate found for the applicant on the basis that no additional construction was required and only minor work necessary to convert. However, the Inspector has laid down a strict condition that the annex is to form an integral element with the house and must never be sold or let separately.

Road Naming The new access road to the development of five houses behind 122A High Street requires to be named. The PC was asked by CBC to submit its recommendation. The PC suggested ‘Fossey Close’, named after Keith Fossey, now deceased, who did so much for the village. This continued the policy of naming new roads in this way after prominent residents (eg Howard Mews, Tanqueray Avenue, Goodhall Crescent etc). Unfortunately, the developer had objected strongly to this name and wanted ‘Longmeadow’ which he’s using as a sales and marketing name (developers do normally use what they consider attractive site names in order to market their developments). He blocked the PC-suggested name although, once sold, the developer will no longer have any interest or contact with Clophill. The PC was angered by this objection and the ‘power’ of a developer and pursued the issue with CBC. The PC is pleased that, after studying the PC’s arguments, they have agreed that the new access road will be named ‘Fossey Close’.

Paradise Farm Gypsy Site Decision CB/13/00985/FULL Location: Sites 1 and 2, Paradise Farm (adjacent to The Causeway) Proposal: Change of use for the stationing of one residential static caravan and two touring caravans, and parking for two associated vehicles and a portaloo Applicant: Mr N Gumble As reported last month the CBC Planning Development Committee (consisting of elected councillors) reconsidered this application for the gypsy/traveller site at the entrance to Paradise Farm on The Causeway. The Committee was addressed by the Chairman of the Parish Council, a resident and our three District Councillors, only one of whom is actually a member of this Committee, all opposing the application and requesting Refusal. However, on a vote, the application was approved. A site plan will now have to be submitted by Mr Gumble to CBC for approval. Our three Ward Councillors (who have staunchly supported the village case all along) have all been included in this decision-making process.

The next Parish Council meeting will take place at 7.45pm on Tuesday 30th July 2013, with a surgery commencing at 7.30pm.
