Irrespective of how long you have been or were a part of this movement of God, one thing is evident – growth! Christ Life has evolved from a humble gathering of willing hearts to a whirlwind of revival, reclaiming territories for God, one community at a time. We ourselves have grown in spirit, love, and truth, individually and collectively.

hrist Life Ministries is 25 years this year but how long have you been a Christian? How long have served in the ministry?

Christ Life is 25 and we give glory to God as we celebrate! I have been a Christian precisely since the 3rd of April 1982. I met the Lord on that day and I have been a Christian since then.

I have been involved in ministry from college days to national service days (in Nigeria) and after national service, when I returned to Ibadan, I joined Sword of the Spirit Ministries. The leadership of Bishop Francis Wale Oke exposed me to ministry work. He trained me, taught me, instructed, corrected and gave me the opportunity to minister and the bulk of my ministerial training started from his ministry. I got into the bible school in Sword of the Spirit Ministries in 1990 and that formed the basis of my theological education - I refer to it everywhere I go. I was ordained in 1991 and Christ Life ministries technically started in 1993 but officially in Brooklyn, New York in 1994. In 1993, we started a house fellowship at a place in Park Slope Brooklyn with 7 adults and 2 children; I hope I will be able to provide a picture of the house. Later we moved on to a rented space at 30 3rd Avenue, Brooklyn YWCA here in New York and from there, we moved to 846 Utica Avenue, then to the present place where the headquarters of the ministry is.

Tell us your little beginnings story of the church?

We got incorporated on March 24, 1994, and then our inauguration as a church was on April 24, 1994. As at the ministry was inaugurated in 1994, the ministry comprised mainly of Nigerians -first-generation immigrants, most of whom were physical therapists or spouses of physical therapists, who had just arrived about that time. Most of us had been matured Christians before we left Nigeria. However, when we started, it was a little difficult to settle into and learn the culture, language, and system. Of course, there was also the Nigerian in us thinking “we are here to change things, to take over” that kind of a thing. With time, we realized that running a ministry in the US is a lot different than in Nigeria. The challenges here are different. In Nigeria, it was a lot easier to gather people together and just start a ministry, but here it was quite different here. I vividly remember the first service we organized to inaugurate the ministry.

We planned it to start at 4 o’ clock on a Friday, and so we expected people to show up, not understanding the culture.

Also, we thought if people heard that Bishop Francis Wale Oke was coming, the whole place would be packed. So, we rented an 850 people capacity hall.

We had not understood how the system worked then. Imagine an 850 people hall with a gallery and lots of space, and at the end of the day, those of us in attendance were just like a drop in the bucket. That experience shook me. While we were struggling with getting people to show up, we also had to deal with getting our papers, which took quite some time. At a point, I felt like going back to Nigeria, but I was assured that God was with us and He stood by us. God told me He was able to take care of us with or without any physical therapy license that my wife had. God has been very faithful. So there you have it, our little beginning story.

There are so many memories; I remember it was difficult for me to ask people to give offering, I wasn’t used to that, but God met all our needs. I also remember, the first day we had a non-Nigerian in the fellowship, O Lord!, it was a huge celebration. So, over the years, God has helped us, we have a culturally mixed congregation today. People have come

This ministry is clearly a product of God’s call; did you at any point struggle with the thought of founding a church in the US? Yes. My struggle actually started from Nigeria. I remember when I returned from National service, I was working in Ibadan as an engineer at Digitech TV, an engineering company. At the same time, I was working almost full-time at Sword of the Spirit Ministries. At a point, I Bishop Francis Wale Oke started to encourage me to come into ministry full-time but I preferred to do ministry and keep my job. So, he asked me one day to pray and fast for clarity on this issue. My wife and I discussed, and we agreed to pray and fast, which I did for three days with no food or water. At the end of it, I still was not

The Presiding Bishop Christ Life Ministries Inc. convinced, and I told my wife the truth, which was that I hadn’t seen or heard anything from the Lord. Later, because I loved what I was doing then (probably out of pride), I said I decided to keep working part-time in the ministry and sponsoring ministry until I had an encounter with the Lord. At this encounter, God spoke to me loud and clear about ministry, but I insisted on my way, that is, to keep sponsoring the ministry. I got the shocker of my life because right there, the Lord

“God sent us here first and foremost as He sent Joseph; so we know our place here” told me “I can sponsor my work and sponsor you on top of that!” So, that was where I let go of my pride and yielded the call. This was one major struggle I had, I wanted to be working and sponsoring the ministry, but God said no.

and gone, but God is faithful.

How did you come about the church’s alias – ‘’home on Uncommon Champions”?

Good! Actually, the uncommon champion thing started at the 2002 convention, where I preached on the making of an uncommon champion. And the text came from Matthew chapter 16 where Jesus said I will build my church and the gates of hell cannot prevail against it. Even if the gate of hell prevails over a champion, there is a superior champion and we see the placement of every Christian at that level where we are different from the world, where we are not common, we see ourselves as champions.

That is exactly what Jesus came to do.

He said, “I give unto you the keys of the kingdom, whatsoever you open on earth will be open, and whatsoever you bind on earth will be bound” and we keep to that scripture. So, for about a year after that convention, there was a wave - an uncommon champion wave. As a matter of fact, about two people in the church named their children Uncommon Champion. So, that is the story of the uncommon champion theme - based on Matthew chapter 16.

The church has 8 locations; how have you kept the ministries aligned to the vision you received from inception? Are there any plans for expanding to new locations?

Let me start with the second one, there are plans to expand. As a matter of fact, we have the vision of making our presence known and impact the lives of people in every continent of the world.

God did not call me to a one location church, because my understanding of ministry is not just to gather people but also to give people opportunities to express their own ministries. The more branches we have, the more we send people. When they are concentrated in a place, when you have too many sound Christians in one place, their salt will lose its value. So, that is the reason why we give opportunities to ministers (to people) who have the call of God upon their lives to go express their ministry.

For the churches we have, I know the word that the Lord gave me concerning each of them before we started them.

In fact, tell you the day each church was

founded as we are seated here. Some of the churches we started are no more, in some cases because the people decided to go in a different direction. In the same way, we have churches we started that are still within the communion. Overall, all we can say is that God has been faithful to us. We have faithful leaders. Some have been with us since inception. Yes, we have faithful leaders and that has kept us together. Incidentally, my principle is that I don’t need to be the wisest among the lot, I only need the wisdom to be able to tap into the wisdom of the wiser people I have around me. And of a truth, I have a lot of them who are wiser than me in Christ Life.

Their humility and their commitment to the vision is amazing.

In response to the first part of the question, I will say it’s not been easy to align the vision across the ministry. You know everybody has their own flavor and we respect people for their differences.

However, as we believe in Christ Life Ministries that since the 20th century, one major injustice that has been done to the church is that the pastoral office has been exalted at the expense of other offices. So, everybody wants to be a pastor, but what Christ Life has been able to do is to allow people to flourish in their areas of calling.

This principle has kept us together. You may be an ordained Minister, but you do not have to be a pastor over a church in Christ Life. You may be a Music Minister and that is what God has called you to do, we will allow you to expand, enlarge and be fulfilled. This approach has helped us a great deal.

mission or focus at any point?

Before 2002, we emphasized the mission of the church, the vision and so forth; you will find those in writing in the bulletin. Then we emphasized our mission, which is to know the Lord and make Him known. From 1994-2002, this was our emphasis, but since 2002, we have changed our emphasis to the Uncommon Champion.

As the leader in ministry, your main job description is being a pillar for members; how and where do you stay invigorated?

My best secret place is at home - in my house. Also, I do not sleep for too long in the night; I do a lot of mediation and study. All these happen at home for the most part. Also, on Wednesdays, as a personal tradition, when I am at home or at least in New York City (not when I am outside here either on ministration or on holiday), I take out an extended amount of time to seek God. And most of the revelations I have had - instructions, revelations, I got them from such avenues.

Also, I draw a lot of inspiration from the Lord when I listen to the music of Jimmy Swaggart as well as the ministration of G.E Patterson.

The church has a relatively diverse membership in terms of culture, how has this influenced the way the ministry is run?

Yes, the diversity in our church has had a lot of impact on the way we operate. We put into consideration the different age groups and the different nationalities in the way we approach things. For example, we discourage people from speaking any language other than English (though it is quite difficult within the church) so that everybody can feel like they belong. Also, we try to incorporate song languages that don’t have big representations in the church into our worship as much as possible Have you had to revise the church’s

Do you have mentors in ministry?

I will say, Bishop Wale Oke is my number one mentor in ministry. I didn’t get born again through his ministry, but I had a lot of my Bible education and training through his ministry. This has played a significant role in my life. I wouldn’t call the others mentors, because mentorship requires that the mentor makes a conscious direct impact on your life. However, there are other people who are not necessarily my mentors, who have blessed me over time. These are people

I have learned things from, though there was no conscious mentorship going on.

In the early days of ministry in the United States, I learned a lot from Pastor John Hagee, Bishop T.D. Jakes as well as Pastor Robert Johansson, who was our first pastor when we got here.

What is the hardest part of ministry for you on a personal level?

Well, I have now overcome this, but I used to get discouraged when people talked evil about me. I would get easily discouraged but I have now overcome it. My wife has been a very strong supporter and somebody who could talk to me straight. God used her to deliver me because, in those days, I would lose sleep just thinking about the work and what people were saying, and all kinds of misrepresentations about me. But one day, when I was breathing hard through a sleepless night (which had happened many times), she gave me a wakeup call and told me “don’t kill yourself; if you do, know that before you are buried another leader would have been appointed”. This talk brought the message home to me and I think If you ask her, I am doing much better in that area. I sleep better and relax more.

What do you like the most about Christ Life Ministries?

Christ Life Ministries is a family and anywhere we find ourselves, we relate as a family, a community, not just a community but a communion. This is in the sense that we have all seen our children grow up and we now have the third and fourth generation now in the ministry here in the United States. They are all doing well and making waves. So that gives us a lot of joy to see all those children, who were born in the ministry or came in as toddlers amounting to something now; we see them, and we are happy. God has really helped us in Christ Life Ministries Besides being the Presiding Bishop of the church, do you have other ventures, occupations or hobbies?

Besides being the Bishop of the ministry, I am also the President of the Bible School. I teach in the Bible School. I love supervising students in their research work. We also get involved in missions, that is one strong area of our ministry.

Also, we provide an apostolic covering for other younger ministries. God sent us here first and foremost as He sent Joseph, so we know our place here. For hobbies, I love to travel and get to know people. I also enjoy spending time with my family.

Usually, once I am done with official duties either at the office or elsewhere, I head straight home; I am not the type you will find all over the place. My home is my place of security, peace, and joy and I love being there What is one thing you think pastors need to do differently in an increasing secularized age, to keep focused on the great commission?

In the past two centuries, we have emphasized or exalted the pastoral ministry at the expense of other ministries. I think we need to develop other ministries and allow them all to function and thrive in their ministries.

Not everyone called a pastor is in the actual sense, a pastor. Just like the fivefold ministry, we need to allow people to function more. If someone is graced in the area of teaching, let them teach; if they are graced in the area of administration, let them do it; if it in the area of music, let them see it as their ministry. They should not be seen as less important than the pastoral ministry. I think the church has a lot of work to do in that area.

Since we are celebrating the ministry, in 2 sentences or in 5 words how would you describe the past 25 years?

Challenging. Interesting. Fulfilling; let’s keep it at three words.

What is next for Christ Life Ministries?

After the experience I had in the month of September last year when I suffered a stroke, I thought I would never return to the pulpit. On one of those nights in the hospital, I asked myself, if I would ever return to the pulpit or preach again?

I began to cry; I wept profusely that night to the point that very hot tears were rolling down my face. The Lord gave me an assurance that I would be back to my feet. I thereafter sought the Lord and we decided that there was a need to emphasize two things. The first is that the mercy I received should be

my message henceforth (knowing there were people who didn’t get to the level I was, and yet they are no more today). My message should be loaded with mercy, compassion, grace and we are going to focus on that as the message. The second emphasis is that we have recognized the need to also stress on ministers’ wellness.

We would be able to do more for the Lord if we are healthy. So, another area of ministry that has emerged is the area of Ministers’ wellness, which is different from Christ Life Bible church, Christ Life Bible Institute and Seminary (CLBIS) and Christ Life global missions. This one we must do consciously. We will be working with the doctors amongst us and in other different places. It will be an avenue for pastors to be reminded and made aware that everyone is going through one thing or the other. I am a pastor, I went through what I went through (and you don’t need to be in sin to go through such), but if we can take care of our health, we most certainly would be able to go far. I want to concentrate on this quite seriously since I have people handling other areas now very well. I want to concentrate on this in the next three years. Let’s start with that and we’ll see where the Lord will take us.

Our first Ministers’ Wellness program is planned for March, in two or three cities in Nigeria and a village where we would commission the health center project. We will do one in the city of Yola and we are going to do a massive one in Kaduna. So those are the plans, although we have had other calls, these ones are our priority for now. We have had calls in other areas such as Jos, Abuja, Ibadan, Lagos. They are all waiting, but there is little I can do now while I am still recuperating. We want to make sure that these things we are doing, which the Lord has asked us to do, go far by the help of God. And in the future, we would be able to hand over to the next generation while we are still alive.

What anchor scripture has kept you and the ministry going since this journey began?

Generally, it is “For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith that is 1 John 5:4 but my major scripture is Proverbs 13:20 He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

So, I choose my friends wisely in the ministry.

in the ministry, how do you see this differently from being the spouse of the Bishop?

I believe as the Bishop’s wife, one thing I must do is to make sure to bring beauty on the altar. I am not referring to physical decoration but spiritually where on my knees, I pray the presence of God over the altar to beautify it. Also, I had always believed that I had the call of God upon my life, so I am aware that my ministry is beyond being the spouse of the Bishop. I know that I have a message for the body of Christ as well.

How long were you married when the church was founded?

We must have been married for about six years in 1994 when the church was founded.

Did you have any objections when Bishop was called to start the ministry?

You know it is interesting that even before we got married, I had always known my husband had the call of God upon his life, so when he got the call, it never crossed my mind for one day that he would fail.

God is faithful.

Did this call into ministry impact the dynamics of your marriage?

I think to an extent it did. As a couple, our relationship was not really affected by this, but I will say it took away the “privacy” in our marriage. We have been able to find a way around it and have become more accommodating especially since we love having people around us.

You are ordained as a senior pastor

How long had you been a Christian and when were you ordained to serve in the ministry?

I gave my life to Christ on August 9, 1982, so I had been a Christian for quite a while before the church was started. I am not very good with dates, but I remember when I gave my life to Christ.

Looking back, what were the early days like for you?

One thing I strongly believed then was that if it was God that called us, God will bring His word concerning the ministry to pass. So, when we started with seven adults and a couple of children, and then later a few other members joined, we were not discouraged by the number because we knew that God is faithful. So, we kept on believing and trusting God that He would build us to the capacity He had ordained for us. So, I will say holding on to that word was what kept us. There were discouragements here and there; my husband got discouraged at some point, but God brought us all through to where we are today.

A major part of your ministry is the Covenant Treasures; Was this your idea?

Well, the Covenant Treasures started as my idea when I felt that

women should be built up as total women. Later as things progressed, a lot of people (which God has really blessed us with at Christ Life – helpers of destiny) started fleshing out the idea. For example, the annual retreat, which has now become a major aspect of the Covenant Treasures, was the idea of one of our sisters in Far Rockaway assembly (Pastor Margaret Jegede).

She spoke to me about the idea, we prayed about it and two years later we started the retreat. Since then, we’ve been growing from grace to grace. We started with about 40 women and have grown in number to over a hundred. Beside this, our conference and convention have all been products of joint efforts from the amazing group of women we have in our church.

What are the (other) Success Stories from the Women’s Ministry?

If anything, I know that the women always look forward to the annual retreat. I believe we started the first retreat with about 40 women and after that first edition, some men came to me and suggested we should plan it for every six months because they could feel the impact in their homes. We have kept it so far, at once a year (through God’s leading). This retreat is strictly for women in Christ Life Ministries and it has become an avenue for sharing and praying about various individual and collective issues. There is a deep sense of community and despite many requests to open it up to nonmembers, we have decided to maintain our current arrangement, in order to guard the sisterhood

stage of the ministry, Rev. Ayodele was there for us; he can’t be left out of our story in advancing through these many years. Also, I can’t overlook the influence of Bishop Francis Wale Oke and Rev. Dr. (Mrs.) Oke. Mummy Oke has been a strong pillar and like a mother to me; she is more than a mentor.

What anchor scripture do you have that has kept you going through the years?

that we share. We have had so many testimonies – marriages have been saved, immigration statuses regularized or reversed, and God has just shown up in diverse ways for various situations. This always gladdens my heart.

What does Gathering of the Eagles Convention mean to you?

This is one of our three major conventions every year in the ministry. We have the Uncommon Champions convention, Covenant Treasures Convention and the Gathering of the Eagles. The gathering of the Eagle brings everyone together to fellowship in God’s presence. It is always special for me because I (and I see others too) experience God in a different dimension. Let me share how God transformed my life at the Gather of the Eagles convention. In 1996 during the convention, I was experiencing one major challenge and I prayed about it and by the 1997 Gathering of the Eagles, we were rejoicing over the victory I received over that issue.

Apart from your designation as a Senior Pastor, are there other roles

or department you find yourself naturally invested in?

One of the things I find myself naturally doing is hanging out with young adults. I see my interactions with youths as a chance to help lay the foundation right. Many are at a stage where they need as much guidance as they can get, even beyond parental influence (especially since it takes a village). I easily interact with them, and as a result, they often open up to me about intricate matters and sometimes it seems as if “any time they talk to Pastor Matilda, it is about secrets.”

It is not! They are just comfortable talking to me. The most important thing for me is to prayerfully admonish them and see that they become better and more Christ-like.

Beyond this, I try to ensure that I am abreast of the activities of most of the other groups or department within the ministry.

Do you have mentors in the Ministry?

First, my husband. He is my mentor, counsel, and prophet. I will also say that I have a mentor in Reverend Yemi Ayodele. At the early

That would be 1John5:4 “For whatever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world; even our faith”. This happens to be one of the anchor scriptures of one of our assemblies. I have held on to this word since my early days as a Christian and it has helped me in down and weary moments. It truly is an anchor scripture because I am reminded of it to look up to God in difficult situations because I see the situations as footmen and Jeremiah 12:5 says we should not go weary with footmen since there are greater battles ahead, rather we should look unto god (I am just paraphrasing).

Recently I was told someone that I think I found my message to the body of Christ, which is to always hold on to God’s word.

My message to Christ Life family at 25 is the God that brought us this far is more than able to take us further. For everyone that has been there for us; it doesn’t matter when you joined, even as recently and one hour ago, I want to say a big congratulations. We have enjoyed the love and support of one another; we are like a family even across our various assemblies. We have seen good days and we have experience greatness but there is still greater glory ahead.

After graduating from the children’s church, Adekemi served in the ushering department (for about seven years) until she left for college.

It is such a part of her that she made sure to transfer the Uncommon Champions sticker from her old car to a new one because in her words “it is a reminder that I am uncommon, and I am a champion, thus I overcome in all things.”

For her, an awareness of who we are in Christ should manifest in our everyday lives and it becomes evident in your interactions with people even outside the church and in every other thing.

oday an accomplished finance professional in on the foremost accounting firms in the world and an entrepreneur, Adekemi is a towering model for younger Champions, especially ladies in the Christ Life family. She was only a toddler when the church started out 25 years ago and now, she is an adult serving in various

capacities in the church. Although she does not clearly remember the early, she has some memories of Utica Avenue days through the transition to the Uncommon Champions Cathedral. Christ Life Ministries to Kemi symbolizes home and a solid foundation.

The love experienced here since a young age and the principle learned from church prepared and helped her navigate life in college, where she mostly spent her time in schoolrelated activities, community service, and church. For her, Christ Life Ministries is an environment that

the younger ones now getting involved. Another passion of hers is the singles ministry.

The Singles Ministry gave her a strong foundation to weather the challenges of college thus it was important for me to serve in a ministry that had been such a blessing to her. Lastly, given her love for planning events, Adekemi is a part of the planning committee of the church.

Kemi is a strong believer of the fact that we become what we confess and think. The

With this mindset, it is no wonder she has excelled in her education, career, and business.

She studied Accounting and Finance (double major) and a minor in communication combined with a master’s in Professional Accountancy at Bryant University, Rhode Island, all in four years.

A former external auditor at Pricewaterhouse-coopers, She now works in the same organization as an Internal Auditor.

On the side, she and a friend (also an Uncommon Champion) started an event planning business about

three years ago and together, they are thriving in their passion.

She celebrates the grace of God that has brought the church thus far, to this milestone. And her prayer is that the church will continue to grow, touch the community and advance. And that in anything and everything the ministry needs to grow, God will send helpers of destiny and give the leadership the tools, guidance and wisdom.

orn into Christ Life Ministries in the same year the church was founded, Ayo can truly be called a full bred uncommon champion. His service to God in the church started out when he joined the choir as a keyboardist at the age of 10. He played at both Sunday and Friday services and grew to perform at conventions and other major church events. As he developed spiritually, the choir also witnessed remarkable growth over time.

Ayo also found an expression for his fervor for the things of God in the Youth Ministry where he grew from being a member to being leader and mentor to younger youths. Christ Life means family to him since he has known no other. He was brought up here and has embraced the culture of love, excellence, and stability as modeled by the leadership and members. Ayo found a sense of purpose for everyday living through the Uncommon Champion mandate.

has learned to achieve anything he puts his mind to with prayer, submission to and reliance on God’s help. This has helped him succeed in terms of his personal development, career, faith, and leadership.

Ayo Fagbemi studied Finance, Economics and Music at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.

He made sure to advance his engagement in music after high school, hence music was his minor in college. Now a financial analyst in Corporate Finance at Morgan Stanley, Ayo has continued to express the uncommon champion ideals in his career and other aspects of life. He believes that these ideals of competence, confidence, consistency, prayers, and faith in God have made him soar in his spheres of influence.

He is grateful to God for seeing the church through the different changes at various phases, most of which he witnessed in the past 25 years. Christ Life has grown from an era of having limited resources to living in the overflow such that its global missions have spread to many parts of the country and the world, including Nigeria.

He celebrates the leadership of “Daddy and Mummy Bishop” (as he fondly calls them) for their visionary leadership. They have instilled a great culture, which has encouraged pastors, ministers, departments, and members to grow in their different capacities in the ministry. “Happy 25 years and I pray for 25 more years and beyond.”
