From the beginning of its history, Clifton College has been shaped by the support of the community
Bursaries at Clifton College are a time-honoured tradition. The need for financial support has never been stronger. Whilst Clifton continues to ensure that fees are monitored; it is a fact that for some, bursarial funding is the only way their child can benefit from a Clifton education. Those deserving pupils who are awarded a Clifton bursary are an essential part of the whole College community. Many of them
will lead in the classroom, on the sports field and in the performing and creative arts before going on to be influential in their communities across the UK and the world.
For me, it is a great pleasure to see how the opportunity to come to Clifton can change young people’s lives. As you read this brochure, I am sure you will begin to understand the transformational power of bursarial support to Clifton, its pupils and parents. At Clifton we thank those who display leadership in supporting a bursary at any level. Regardless of your situation, if you are able, I invite you to support bursarial provision and with your help we can continue to recruit pupils with potential and talent, to give them otherwise unavailable opportunities to thrive and develop.
Whether you are in a position to fund an endowment or an annual or monthly donation; your support is essential to this key purpose of the College. Please take a moment to contact our Development Trust at development@cliftoncollege.com or telephone +44 (0)117 315 7662 to discuss the various tax effective ways that can be employed to assist you in making a meaningful investment. I would like to thank sincerely all those who have in the past supported our efforts and to those who may consider supporting in the future. We could not be more appreciative of your support.
Dr Tim Greene, Head MasterThe charitable support of qualified means-tested pupils who could not otherwise benefit from a Clifton education, has been a long-standing priority for Old Cliftonians. Bursaries provide the opportunity to support the dreams of talented pupils who inevitably thrive once given the opportunity to study at Clifton. The chance to play their part in the lives of others has been a tremendous source of pride for many OCs. Whether it is talented academics, thespians, sportsmen or women, artists or all-rounders, Clifton has provided the platform that our bursary holders will always cherish.
Old Cliftonians have always seen a benefit of bursarial support. In fact, when asked, many cite the support of bursarial funding as their personal priority. This is the result of a long standing tradition that ensures the College is buoyed by the inclusion and the resulting diversity provided by bursarial funding.
In 2019 OCs assisted 145 pupils achieve a place at Clifton. This was due to a total of £2,000,000 offered in bursarial support to qualified means tested pupils from all walks of life. In fact 25 received bursaries over 80% fee remission. Altogether 66 received bursaries over 50%.
There are a myriad of reasons why Cliftonians support bursarial support. Some will say that they would like to give back to Clifton for the financial support they received with their education. Others will say that they would like to thank Clifton for the wonderful and transformational years they spent at Clifton. Regardless when one gives to bursaries at Clifton they are ensuring that Clifton remains
at the forefront of education in the UK and around the world by enabling Clifton to attract the best and brightest pupils.
Even though Clifton is intent on ensuring its fees do not escalate beyond the means of our parents, it is a fact that an independent education in England and across the world is costly. For those parents who see the tremendous value in a Clifton education, a bursary can be the difference between their child attending Clifton or not. As such bursaries are awarded from anywhere between 5% and 100%. Each award is given to an exceptional candidate based on predetermined measurements of talent and need. A rigorous means testing scheme has been devised to ensure each candidate is truly deserving of an award.
Fundraising at Clifton is an opportunity to return to our philanthropic mission and build upon the great legacy of our predecessors.
---------
Bursarial Awards at Clifton begin from the moment a pupil enters the school and are sustained throughout the pupils time at Clifton, provided the selection conditions remain the same. To qualify, applicants require a comfortable pass at common entrance as well as showing notable talent in one or more areas of school life including sport, music, art, drama and leadership. Typically awards may be made up to 50% of school fees but can reach 100% in order to attract the best candidates. Awards are measured through testing, interviews and consultation with prep schools.
Award holders will be expected to make a significant contribution to both their Houses and the College
In order to ensure that our bursarial gifts are given to the most deserving pupils our
Director of Admissions markets Clifton to deserving candidates from across the UK and abroad. This ensures that Clifton recruits the finest pupils.
Our Head of College, Council and Old Cliftonians see bursarial support as a school priority. All who are involved in the delivery of education know that the unique fabric of Clifton is made up of the different strands of our student body. One of the most important strands being the contribution made by our bursarial holders.
1. An undoubted strength of Clifton is its longstanding commitment to inclusion of pupils from all walks of life, faith, race and background. Bursaries allow Clifton to ensure no deserving pupil is left behind.
2. Bursaries are traditionally more appropriately funded thorough donations.
3. Careful consultation suggests that bursaries are a priority with a majority of Old Cliftonians and our Council.
4. Bursarial award winners are fundamental to Clifton College’s character and the growth of its community.
5. Grateful OCs are given an opportunity to give back to Clifton in gratitude for the wonderful years they spent at Clifton.
6. Many bursarial awards are an opportunity for the Clifton Community to ensure Clifton remains the world class college they enjoyed so many years before.
With your ongoing support, we are able to continue shaping Clifton’s future. You help us preserve our historic buildings, develop our unique learning environment and extend our distinguished educational opportunities further afield.
We are humbled by your generous support and hope you enjoy seeing our aspirations become a reality.
