Regarded by many as one of the best art sales and exhibitions in Colorado, the event will be held at A Painted View Ranch, located just minutes from the Town of Westcliffe at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Art for the Sangres showcases the work of regional artists, accompanied by wine and delicious food in a picturesque fall setting. The Rules Fixed Price Lottery Sale Rules
• Complete one intent-to-purchase slip for each work of art you’d
like to purchase.
• A docent will insert your slip for you, located at each artist station
and will insert the slip into the envelope by the work of art.
• 40% of your total purchase constitutes a tax-deductible contri-
bution to SILPT.
• At 7:30 p.m., three names will be drawn by the docent and posted
next to the artwork in the order drawn.
• The first person whose name is drawn has 10 minutes to sign an
agreement to purchase with the docent.
• At 7:40 p.m., if the first person has not signed an agreement to
purchase, the second person will have until 7:50 p.m. and so on.
• Buyers are obligated to purchase at least one work of art if their
name is drawn for more than one piece. Promptness is requested in order to release the other works for the next person on the list.

Mike Beeman
Mike’s interest in art began at an early age while living in Banbury, England. His neighbor, a portrait artist, sparked a fascination that has influenced him throughout his career. Painting in oils or pastels, in studio or on location, his love for a challenge takes him from figurative work to landscapes to still lifes. No matter the subject or medium, Mike is focused on capturing the light and creating a mood that will engage the viewer. His work has been selected in Pastel Journal’s top 100 competitions (2013 Silver Award for still life), the Richeson 75, and International Association of Pastel Societies’ exhibits. Mike is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and a member of the IAPS Master Circle.

Julie Bender
Deeply immersed in the medium of pyrography, award-winning artist Julie Bender’s unique portrayal of animals inspires the imagination. Known for her highly representational wood burnings, Bender breathes new excitement into her work by burning on paper. Rich sepia tones produced by scorching her surface, combined with artful, vignette-like compositions and memorable scenes present a distinctive and refreshing perspective in animal art. Simply put, Bender “paints with heat.” Having recently relocated to Colorado, Bender plans to further explore her medium while infusing more of the Western experience into her work. A signature member of the Society of Animal Artists, her credentials include presence in Strokes of Genius 3, Great Dogs, Amazing Artists, and publications including Sporting Classics, Wildlife Art Journal and Cowboys & Indians. She participates in select invitational wildlife shows, international juried exhibitions, and galleries and museums throughout the country

Melissa Cooper Melissa’s widely collected wildlife art—from five-inch to monumental scale—depicts such creatures as rabbits, beavers, chipmunks, bears, and birds known for their combination of graceful shape and, as the artist puts it, “fluffy and robust” charm. An impressionistic style suits Cooper well for a creature’s body. When it comes to the face, however, detail is key to infusing the animal with spirit and personality. Melissa has 24 years of sculpting experience. She currently lives in Littleton, Colorado.

William C. Davis
William C. Davis retired in 1992 and was awarded professor emeritus from California State University Northridge. During his tenure he taught drawing, craft, 2D design and 3D design. He wrote curriculum and taught Ceramics and Glass design studies. During these busy years he managed to complete two masters degrees, one in Ceramics and the other in Fine Arts from USC. In order to become a full Professor he had to exhibit widely. His works in ceramics and glass have been in more than 125 juried shows including regional, national, and international. His work has been shown in Germany, Australia and Canada. Some of the national shows include: The Oakland Museum (CA), Leigh Yawkey Museum (WI), Long Beach Museum (CA), and a one man show at Palmdale College (CA) including two of their affiliated galleries. Davis discovered New Mexico in the 1980’s and vowed to move to Taos one day. “So my wife and I moved to Taos in 2005.” Finally I am living in a place where I don’t have to pack and ship my work out of state.” His work has been shown in New Mexico at Blue Rain Gallery, Santa Fe and Brazos Art Gallery, Taos. Currently his work can be seen at Act I Gallery, Taos.

Shane Dimmick
Shane Dimmick was born and raised in Wyoming where she expressed an early passion for the natural world through drawing and study, which led to a degree in biology and a career in illustration and wildlife painting. Field trips and her own backyard, now in the Colorado mountains outside of Westcliffe, provide her with an array of subjects and a glimpse into their lives. Dimmick’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including in: Art and the Animal, Arts for the Parks, Birds in Art, Endangered Species at the U.S. Department of the Interior, and National Wildlife. She is a Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists, NY, and has won its Award of Excellence. Her work is in numerous private and public collections, and in three books on both art and wildlife.

Adele Earnshaw
A sixth generation New Zealander, Adele Earnshaw now lives in Sedona, AZ but her painting and choice of subject matter have been greatly influenced by both New Zealand and Australia where she spent much of her life. Working primarily in transparent watercolor, Adele’s paintings have been exhibited at the Natural History Museum in New York and have toured Japan and Sweden with Birds in Art exhibitions. She is a member of the Society of Animal Artists. Her native New Zealand selected her to design the first three stamps for the Game Bird Habitat Stamp Program. Adele’s work was exhibited at the National Museum of History in Taipei, along with the work of 12 other artists representing nine different countries. In recent years, Adele has also been painting landscapes plein air, in both oil and watercolor.

Joe Garcia
It is an understatement to say that Joe Garcia loves to paint. When he is away from his studio too long he finds himself craving the paints, and he is not totally happy unless he’s holding a brush and mixing colors on the palette! Joe received a B.A. in Fine Art from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and was in the commercial art field for a number of years before turning to fine art full time. Watercolors have been his media of choice for most of his 35-plus year career, but oils took over the watercolor spotlight a few years ago and now comprise about 50 percent of his work. His landscapes and wildlife paintings may be found in collections and galleries throughout the United States, Canada and abroad.

Jim Gilmore In relation to his art Jim says, “ In my art, I strive to share with others the love and respect I have for nature and the cowboy lifestyle. Living on our cattle ranch in the Rocky Mountains, I have had many extraordinary experiences throughout my life. David Grossmann
Art has been a constant presence in David Grossmann’s life. Drawing was his favorite activity as a child, so he spent much of the time exploring his imagination through pencil and paper. A love of the outdoors has also been a life-long companion for David. He lived in Chile until he was fourteen, and the towering Andes, the vast ocean, the barren deserts, and fertile valleys shaped his appreciation for the beauty of nature. When he left Chile and moved to Colorado, the majesty of the Rocky Mountains brought a touch of familiarity through the time of transition and culture shock. While in high school, David studied drawing with artist Valorie Snyder. He went on to earn degrees in business and Spanish, and then attended a classically-based art academy in Boulder. It was at the academy that David had his first class in plein air (outdoor) painting. He responded immediately to the challenges of this new method and the way it fit perfectly with his love for the outdoors. David’s dedication to landscape painting kept growing, eventually leading him to study with renowned artist Jay Moore. Since then, David’s work has been included in many exhibitions, including national shows sponsored by Oil Painters of America, The American Impressionist Society, and Salon International. Southwest Art Magazine featured him as one of their “Artists to Watch,” and David’s work has also been included in Plein Air Magazine and American Art Collector Magazine. In her description of his work, acclaimed artist Nancy Guzik said that he “goes beyond his paint by bringing a sensitivity that appears to be magic.”

Nancy & Mark Hargis Nancy Hargis has always been drawn to mixed media and with her husband Mark providing the engineering, her artforms are not only exciting and intriguing, but finely tuned and well balanced. Paul Kethley After graduation, Paul moved to the Denver area to pursue a short career in the sales and marketing field. Realizing his God-given talent, he refocused his attention to oil painting. By 1989 he had made a few significant sales and acquired some art students in the Evergreen, Colorado area. In 1998 Paul married Lisa and shortly thereafter, relocated to Buena Vista Colorado. “Lisa provides needed inspiration and objectivity for my work” he says, and since has participated in the CFD Western Art Show, WY, ‘Night of Artists Show’, TX and is now represented by Altermann Galleries, NM. In 2007 the Pearce Museum at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, purchased his painting entitled “Through the Slots.”

Kate Kiesler Kate Kiesler is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in Illustration. She began her career illustrating children’s books before pursuing painting full time. Kate grew up in rural Vermont and has an inherent love for the outdoors and the landscape. After a brief stay in Taos, New Mexico, she moved to Colorado in 1997. Kate is most interested in conveying an interpretation of her surroundings through brushwork and the juxtaposition of value and color. She spends most days painting in the central mountains of Colorado. She has participated in the Colorado Governor’s Art Show, Estes Park Plein Air, and the Crested Butte Invitational among other venues.

Lorie Merfeld-Batson Lorie Merfeld-Batson began studying art at a young age, apprenticing under her uncle, nationally known oil painter Gerald Merfeld. She continued her education in classical techniques of painting and figure drawing at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and the Palette & Chisel. After moving with her husband and children to Colorado, she was inspired by the colors and textures of the western landscape to begin painting full-time. Lorie is accomplished in oils and pastels and is involved in several organizations including Oil Painters of America, Signature member Plein Air Artists of Colorado, Signature member Pastel Society of Colorado. She has works in many private collections, and has recently been included in several Invitational Shows including the Governor’s Invitational in Loveland , The Sedona Plein Air Exhibition, Nomadas del Arte, and the Representing the West Show. Painting in a impressionist but representational style, Lorie paints plein-air and studio works from her home in the Wet Mountain Valley, and is represented by the Brookwood Gallery in Westcliffe, CO, and online at www.loriemerfeld-batson.com

Anita Mosher Anita Mosher is an award winning oil painter noted for her use of color and exuberant strokes across the canvas. Her work has been featured in articles numerous times in Southwest Art magazine including “Artists to Watch”, in 2001 and in American Art Collector, Western Art Collector, Colorado Expressions, and Vail Art. She is a signature member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painter’s Society and the Outdoor Painters Society and a founding signature member of Plein Air Artists Colorado. John Pyson A collector at heart, John Pyson, owner of Investment Grade Collectibles, is in his 30th year of seeking out high grade Southwest textiles. His personal collection numbers over 400 examples of old Navajo rugs and blankets, Saltillo sarapes, Rio Grande blankets, and museum grade contemporary Navajo tapestries. He enjoys research as much as collecting in order to place each textile in its historical context. He is preparing a book on the origins of Southwest textile design and cross cultural exchange of the design elements seen in weavings of the Southwest.

Cathy Sheeter Cathy Sheeter grew up in a remote town in Eastern Oregon, where she was immersed in a ranching community with small town values, rich in agriculture, wildlife, and open spaces. Her love of both animals and art were apparent at an early age. Cathy moved to Colorado in 2002, where she still resides, and carries “the western way” in her blood. Cathy’s primary choice of mediums is scratchboard. Scratchboard involves the use of abrasive tools to scratch away a top layer of black ink to reveal a layer of white clay that is hidden beneath. From that point Cathy may choose to leave the image black and white, or to color the scratched areas with colored inks. Cathy exhibits her work in around 15 national and international shows a year. Greg Smith Greg grew up in Colorado and now lives with his wife and twin children in Parker, Colorado. Greg pursued painting training at The Florence Academy of Art, in Florence, Italy for one year followed by Ateliers of Bougie Studio in Minneapolis and Hurinenko and Paquet Studio in St. Paul, MN. Greg has taken workshops at the Art Student League of Denver, and the Fechin Institute in New Mexico and his instructors have included David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Daniel Sprick, Kim English, Jeff Hurinenko, and Joe Paquet. Nathan Solano Nathan Solano spent a number of years working in Colorado and Florida as a photographer, illustrator and art director for advertising agencies. In 1987, though lacking formal art training, he began to paint full time. His work has been featured in Southwest Art, Art of the West, Western Art Collector Magazine, the Artist Magazine, Taos Magazine, Western Horseman, Cowboys and Indians, the American Cowboy, and Wildlife Art Magazine. Nathan is represented by the Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt, CO, Abend Gallery in Denver, CO, Hayden Hays Western Gallery at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ and Settlers West Galleries in Tucson, AZ.

Christopher Thomson Christopher grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC. His childhood was spent tinkering with woodworking in his parents’ basement, playing flute, and bicycling to the Potomac River where he swam, kayaked, camped and built driftwood tree houses mostly in solitude. He studied engineering briefly at Swarthmore College but left to study with master potter Marguerite Wildenhain. Drafted, he worked for two years as a house parent for emotionally disturbed teenage boys as a conscientious objector to war. Shortly thereafter he met his wife of 35 years, Susan Livermore. They left their California pottery commune and moved to rural NM where they built an adobe house. Gathering stone, making adobes, felling trees taught them skills and acquainted them with the magic of their new land. Christopher did construction contracting for several years before dedicating himself fulltime to functional and sculptural ironworks, with employees and alone, for the last 27 years. www.christopherthomsonironworks.com

Josh Tobey
“My goal is to tell the human story using wildlife,” says Tobey. “Whether the sculpture is large or small, I want the animal to make eye contact with the viewer. I want them to be invited into the story.” Josh currently shows in Sedona, AZ; Palm Desert, CA; Cannon Beach, OR; Park City, UT; Santa Fe, NM He and his wife Josephine now live in Loveland, Colorado.

Mike Untiedt Mike Untiedt “trys to paint like Mark Twain wrote.” As a storyteller with a brush, he conveys a timelessness, a sense of the moment. Born and bred in Colorado, Untiedt comes from a long line of farmers and ranchers, which influenced his love of painting the prairie landscape. One of the things dearest to Michael’s heart is a group of philanthropic artists called The Gatherers, who through the sale and donation of their art raise funds for community projects. Michael’s work has been featured in both one-man and group shows in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona and Montana. Michael was featured in the February, 2001 issue of Southwest Art. He currently lives in Denver with his wife Donna and their two children.

Don Weller Don Weller drew horses and cowboys and roped calves in high school and college. After graduating from Washington State University, he sold his horses and moved to Los Angeles where he spent decades doing graphic design, illustration and also teaching, first at UCLA and for a decade at the Art Center School in Pasadena. Finally, realizing he had seen all the cement and palm trees he could stand, he and his family moved to rural Utah. There Don creates western paintings and rides his cutting horses. His paintings have received many awards including The Jones Award from the Bosque Art Center. He won the Artists’ Choice Award in the Western Artists of America 2011 Exhibition and the Best Water Soluble in the Western Art Association 2011.

Sarah Woods Sarah Woods grew up in Wyoming, and her love of the wildlife and western landscape is evident in her work. Sarah’s oil paintings share strong realistic color and crisp, dynamic lighting, something she attributes to her life at “high altitude.” Her career began after winning a Wildlife in Art magazine national competition in 1986. She has had the good fortune to have been invited to participate in some of the nation’s finest shows: Birds in Art, Wildlife: the Artist’s View, National Museum of Wildlife Art’s “Western Visions”, Cheyenne Frontier Days, and Arts for the Parks, including the Founder’s Favorite and Judges’ Choice Awards. In 2010 Sarah was invited to participate in the Jackson Hole Art Auction, representing “past and present masters of the American West.” She shows at Trailside Galleries in Jackson, Wyoming and at the Hayden Hays at the Broadmoor. Sarah is proud that she has been a part of Art for the Sangres from its inception and feels lucky to live in Westcliffe with her husband, Randy and their two daughters.

Dinah Worman Dinah`s landscape paintings are instantly recognizable for their composition, clarity and depth. Arranging the compositon as blocks of darks and lights on an empty canvas or pastel board allows her to work out the structure and statement of the piece before actual painting begins. Dinah is able to retain her vitality by continually renewing her vision. She uses various methods of staying fresh such as switching back and forth from oil to pastel or intentionally mixing up her palette. Dinah states “I constantly work to press beyond method and into a flow of creative instinct.” Dinah’s work can be found at dinahworman.com as well as a listing of galleries and shows.
