This Medievaldating property was restored by London-based art enthusist Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza to now house one of the world’s most curious art collections and provide a place for wellness and contemplation. Coming from a family of collectors, Thyssen-Bornemisza first visited Croatia in 1992 to restore artwork damaged by the Balkan war. During this decade-long endeavor, she ventured to the island of Lopud with a local friar, where she spotted the ruins of a monastery and 16th century fortress, which had been empty since 1822. In a following trip with architect Frank Gehry, he suggested she restore the property. Undertaking this project in conjunction with designer Paola Lenti and Zagreb-based architect Rujana Bergam Markovic, Thyssen-Bornemisza strived to uphold its historical authenticity and, at the same time, divided the

monastery’s original 13 cells into five larger suites. Today, guests sleep within a preserved 15th century complex that once housed Franciscan monks. The history can be felt across the island, through its absence of cars to the wood carved angels originally made for the Villa Favorita museum. Beyond what most would expect from a hotel, guests walking through Lopud 1483 are privy to a collection of Renaissance and gothic furniture and paintings from the Villa Favorita, unseen by the public for decades, as well as Thyssen-Bornemisza’s own collection, TBA21. t’s no secret Napa Valley is one of the world’s premier wine regions with it’s beautiful scenery and legendary world-class wines. What you might not know is just how amazing the autumn season is in wine country. For several weeks during this time, the vines turn yellow and red, the air becomes cool and crisp, and the wonderful smell of grapes grows even stronger. This magical time of the year is my favorite to visit Napa Valley. What really attracts me the most about this place is the people. Remember, Napa was built by farmers who grew up on the land that just happen to love drinking wine. Now those are my kind of people! These same farmers are at their busiest every fall, otherwise known as Harvest. Napa becomes alive with excitement and celebrates the grapes reaching their peak ripeness. It is a wonderful time! My favorite section of Napa is the northern part, Calistoga. Calistoga is a charming town of luxury resorts, Bed & Breakfasts and natural hot spring spas. I highly recommend staying at Solage, an award-winning luxury resort, restaurant and spa. This resort was created to reflect its hometown spirit - small town charm with urban sophistication. Enjoy an afternoon at the spa, with renowned Calistoga mud and mineral water therapies. There is no need to leave the resort to find amazing food. Solbar is my favorite dining spot for breakfast and dinner in Napa. One of the best ways to really see Napa is to start your day with an early morning bike ride. The morning air is cool and quiet as you breathe in the 360 degree picturesque views of the many miles of rolling vineyard hills. Afterwards, spend your afternoon touring and tasting some of the world’s best wines. I highly recommend checking out a couple of my favorite wineries, Quintessa and Seavey.
