A NEW CONCEPT RESPONDING TO NEEDS A NEW GENERATION

Jewish Youth Network (JYN) is a pioneering charitable outreach organization dedicated to the spiritual and social wellness of the Greater Toronto Area's youth from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12, and beyond. The Jewish population in the GTA under the age of 24 exceeds 60,000 young people, a high percentage of whom are not engaged at all in any sort of program that promotes Jewish identity and continuity. The Jewish Youth Network responds to this disturbing statistic with a concept that resonates directly with our youth, speaks their language and engages their soul. It is current for today’s times, but includes a built-in conduit for the future. While there are many services out there, few, if any, can achieve what is necessary to illuminate the pathway to Jewish identity through guidance, care and knowledge in today’s rapidly changing environment. This new building, the first of its kind, is much more than just bricks and mortar; it is an essential apparatus to help JYN achieve its mission, responding to the needs

of a new generation. JYN currently operates out of three different rental locations within the GTA. This new space will not only answer their physical needs but will be a major financial step in the right direction. It will also allow efficiencies in the delivery of their services not only through consolidation but expansion of the education and recreational facilities. The projected cost of the land and building is $9 Million. We are pleased to announce that we have successfully raised over $5 Million and through the following dedication opportunities we hope to reach our target. We promise to work day and night and overturn every stone so that no youth are left behind. The writing on the wall is clear. If we don’t step up to the plate now, tomorrow’s synagogue trustees, Jewish day schools, and the other standard-bearers of Jewish life will suffer the consequences. The site for the new campus is strategically located on Bathurst Street, a stone’s throw from the new Lebovic Jewish Community Centre and the surrounding development. THE BUILDING F E ATUR ES Plans for the 26,000 square foot state-of-the-art building will include classrooms, offices, a social hall, study space, an expansive sport lounge and much more. There’s something for everyone. And the prototype is revolutionary - a concept whose time has come - as there does not yet exist a Jewish centre in the world that is focused solely on servicing the Youth to the exclusion of all other demographics.

Our student body is made up of children from various backgrounds and affiliations. Classes are held on Sunday 9:30am - 12:15pm weekly. Recognizing that Hebrew School is an additional academic program that goes beyond their regular school hours, our teachers create an engaging program that keeps the interest of the child. To ensure that children will read Hebrew fluently, we use the new, acclaimed Aleph Champ program. Aside from our summer courses, all courses are year-long, i.e. the span of a full academic year. They begin in September and finish in June. Jewish Youth Network is establishing a Fund to support and secure a series of Programmes, JYN Retreats and the West Coast Summer Program. The naming of an individual program contributes towards our annual budget and is a great way to ensure the sustainability of our ongoing programs. JYN is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a fun and enjoyable learning environment where Youth / Teens can discover and enhance their connection to Judaism. JYN makes every effort to ensure that all Youth / Teens are able to participate in its programs, activities & experiences. The programming subsidy strives to be as nonintrusive as possible and therefore more accessible to those who need financial assistance. The Fund will reflect JYN’s commitment to supporting the community by basing financial assistance on trustworthiness and honesty. The very fact that we find many of our present initiatives and programs being replicated by other youth-oriented organizations serves as a strong indicator that the JYN is a trailblazer that stands at the helm of innovative and successful youth programming for our times. The Mobile Jewish Youth Network is an exciting and unique concept that will enable JYN to widen its scope of outreach to teens. The basic approach behind it is, “those who are not yet coming to us, we’ll come to them!” JYN is purchasing and retrofitting a supercool RV which is custom designed to attract teens and engage them daily on their turf, whether it be at school, a sports venue, a concert or any other place of gathering for teens. This creates a great marketing opportunity for your company. The RV will include a food service/buffet area, a prayer corner, interior television screens and gaming, lounge, music, books and meeting area. The RV will be staffed by JYN Alumni who will drive out to the local high schools and teen events, and invite students to join them on board this fun and funky, fully converted mobile home. In this warm and welcoming environment, teens can field basic questions about Judaism, get information about a particular holiday, learn about JYN programs and activities or just grab a kosher snack and hang out. Our Shabbatons and weekend retreats are where Judaism becomes explosively alive for today’s Jewish teenager. JYN’s signature retreats provide teens with an unforgettable opportunity to live and love their heritage and have an amazing time to boot. Retreats include trips to NYC, Washington, Montreal, Niagara Falls and Mont Tremblant. The yearly Ski Retreat to Mt. Tremblant, Quebec, thrills even our most avid snow boarders and ski-lovers! In addition to a fantastic skiing experience, this retreat brings participants not only to new physical heights, but to spiritual heights too, with inspirational, fire-side stories with the Rabbi, great opportunities to bond with fellow Jewish teens and forging memories that will last a lifetime.

Teens for the Community is a program which encourages teens to make a difference in their community, gain leadership skills and initiate projects independently for the benefit of the community at large. More specifically, teens come together to strategize, plan and execute projects that benefit Israel, the Elderly, the Needy, and Sick Children. The following provides a synopsis of TFC’s primary avenues of community assistance: • Supporting Israel As a response to ongoing events occurring in Israel, teens in our community can keep in sync by organizing and participating in projects and initiatives to benefit victims of terror, our brethren in Israel and soldiers of the IDF, all under the guidance of our JYN Advisors and former IDF staff /soldiers.

• Seniors Some of the most meaningful moments enjoyed by JYN teens are those experienced at the Retirement Homes, bringing smiles to both the seniors and the volunteers. Throughout the year, teens participate in projects and holiday events geared to engage both seniors and teens in fulfilling and enjoying mutually beneficial activities.

Holidays are a great time to celebrate and reconnect to our heritage. In taking the Holiday celebrations to a whole new level, programming ranges from city wide parties for teens and alumni, to projects that benefit and include the underprivileged and needy within our community during these special times of the year.

5 ) T FC: T EENS F O R T H E C O M M U N I T Y

1) S HA B B AT DI NNER S

Specially arranged Friday night dinners enable teens to bring their friends and taste one of the greatest treasures known to the Jewish people - Shabbat. Traditional Shabbat food, great camaraderie, singing, dancing and Yiddishkeit at its best!

The Jewish Youth Network has undertaken to provide Tefillin for boys who have willingly committed to don Tefillin daily. These teens have not received a pair of Tefillin for their Bar Mitzvahs and do not have the funds to purchase a pair of their own. Our Mezuzah Campaign targets JYN Alumni and post-secondary grads. Are you heading to university and living on campus? Did you just move into your own place? Getting married and settling into a new home? JYN is always there to help you make your house a “Jewish home” by providing you with the basic essential of a kosher mezuzah. Simply contact us, and we will take care of the arrangements.

• Underprivileged Very often, growing up in our sheltered and protective environment, teens are not always aware of the many challenges less-privileged youth in their age bracket might be experiencing. Coordinating special projects geared to helping fellow teens in need, or underprivileged families in our community, really provides our TFC Volunteers with the opportunity to grasp the bigger picture of community needs, while developing their sensitivity and allowing them to put their ownsituations in healthy perspective. • Helping the Sick JYN has undertaken, on various occasions, to help terminally ill children, teens with serious health conditions and teens battling cancer. Some of these projects were teen-initiated fundraiser sports tournaments through TFC, and others were organized by JYN staff, such as the recent “Cure for Courtney Render Campaign” which successfully raised a substantial portion of the funds needed for Courtney’s treatments in the U.S. • Community Understanding your community and the role you play towards ensuring its betterment is important for the overall character formation of young adults. Events connected to the community at large help the teens of today grow into caring and responsible community leaders of tomorrow.

6) YJP (YOUNG JEWISH PROFESSIONALS) & ALUMNI

Alumni and Young Professionals can greatly benefit from programs that offer networking and social engagement beyond the teenage level. JYN aims to keep the torch burning among post high-school graduates through age-appropriate programming as they enter the higher academic and corporate worlds. These include large-scale Shabbat dinners such as our “Shabbat 200 ‘Jewnity’ Experience”, holiday parties such as our annual Purim Shinding or Sukkot Farbrengen, and social networking events. Once our Alumni approach the threshold of marriage, JYN offers marital guidance to explore this new dimension of their future. Marriage classes include the beautiful intricacies of the Laws of Family Purity that have been the central pillar of Jewish homes for over 3,000 years. Combined with a healthy dose of marriage advice, these classes set young couples off on the best footing for their future together.

7 ) MOB IL E Y OUTH CENTR E S MED I A OP P ORT U NI T Y

The JYN Mobile Youth Centres, a.k.a Mitzvah Tanks, provide a unique media/ advertising opportunity targeted at the community at large at youth in general. These will visit schools that contain a high Jewish population such as CHAT, Westmount, Stephen Lewis, Forest Hill Collegiate etc., enabling advertisers to reach thousands more youth. Your name or company will be advertised on the mobile for 2 years (see further information on page 15). 33

8 ) SP O RT S

JYN hosts many sports outings throughout the year. Whether it’s a tailgate party to the Buffalo Bills, or enjoying Spadina Kosher at the Rogers Centre or ACC, JYN staff are always on the look-out for available tickets and a great time. Throughout the school year, JYN offers “Jewball”, our weekly team-up at a local gym to play some pickup basketball, meet new friends, and relax from the many stresses of school and a busy week. Here, the players find a healthy release in a positive and fun Jewish environment, and for many, it is the highlight of their week. For teens who remain in the city during the summer, getting together with friends and staying connected takes on a new importance. By registering to play on the JYN Baseball team, these local teens have an opportunity to enjoy a summer of sports, socializing and fun.

9 ) J Y N CO NNEC T

Understanding that kids look up to teens as role models, envisioning what they themselves aspire to be in a few years down the road, JYN has developed a unique mentoring-style program initiative. The JYN Connect is a weekly afterschool peermentorship program which pairs up elementary-age pupils with high school students for the purpose of tutoring and social enrichment. The volunteer high school students assume the role of a big brother/sister to not only assist in academics but also to lend an ear and offer guidance in social mentoring and general advice. Sports and social activities are included in the program. This initiative helps youth to develop positive role models and friendships that deftly guide them through the often-precarious teenage years.

This incredible summer trip for teens to Israel is currently in the developmental stages. JYN is seeking a partner to support this initiative and provide teens with a unique, transformational experience in the land of our heritage before they enter university.

11) OVER THE TOP - TEEN WEST COAST TRAVEL CAMP

“Over The Top” is a summer road trip for Jewish teens between the ages of 13- 17. Wake up to the sunrise over the ocean. Explore the mysteries of the desert. Look out at the world from the peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Create friendships and memories in a Jewish environment that will last a lifetime.

MEZUZAH DEDICATIONS FEAT U RES

A mezuzah is a universal symbol of our people’s deliverance from Egyptian servitude and has been affixed to the front doorpost of every Jewish home from time immemorial, providing holiness and protection with the inscription of G-d’s name on leather parchment. It is inscribed meticulously by a qualified scribe in Hebrew, according to a precise tradition passed down from Moses. There are 30 dedications available in the new building, and each one will fill the space with wholesome energy and a reminder that G‑d is always with us.
