At Abbey Manor College, our vision is to give students ‘hope, determination and achievement’. Ultimately, we want students to become happy, fulfilled adults who achieve their full potential in life. We want them to have the courage to strive for their dreams, and if they come up short, the resilience to persevere. We want them to take what they have learned at AMC, to forge ahead into the future.

At Abbey Manor College we are committed to giving our students every opportunity to excel academically, to build positive relationships with their peers and adults, and to make positive contributions as independent and confident learners.
Our main aim is to equip our students for reintegration, Further Education or employment, by providing them with a curriculum that gives them a chance to succeed beyond their statutory education into adulthood.
Abbey Manor College is the statutory Local Authority Provision for young people who have been excluded from mainstream education. Our students join the College throughout the academic year, at various stages of their secondary educational journey. They are referred for a number of reasons ranging from behaviour, to specific educational needs that cannot always be met in a mainstream setting.
At KS3 the aim us to prepare students for return to mainstream education; as such they follow National Curriculum modelled lessons.
This ensures that they successfully reintegrate into mainstream school. At KS4, students have the potential to go on to further education, apprenticeship or employment with 5-7 GCSE’s or equivalent. They will also be equipped with the life skills required to make a positive impact in society.
In addition to the academic curriculum, students in Year 9 to 11 also have weekly access to the Wellbeing Hub at our John Evelyn Campus. During their time here, students take part in a range of ASDAN short courses linked to the dimensions of wellbeing including physical, emotional, social, occupational, financial, environmental and spiritual. Students also have the opportunity to complete first aid certificates and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

‘Leaders are ambitious for pupils’.

‘Leaders aim to provide pupils with an education equivalent to a mainstream school. Pupils study a broad range of subjects in all year groups. Leaders assess pupils when they arrive at the school so they can make sure that pupils receive the support they need in class and through intervention programmes’. Ofsted
‘I enjoy the lessons here. My teachers give me lots of support which helps me to understand the work’.
We are deeply committed to supporting our students in achieving their full potential, encouraging them to be the very best they can be. We ensure every student is both challenged and supported to make the strongest possible progress.
Students in Years 7 to 9 follow a curriculum in line with what they would have studied in mainstream school. In Years 10 and 11, students follow a curriculum that provides them with the knowledge and qualifications needed to progress to Post-16 education.
We ensure the highest possible teaching standards for students and have provided specialist training for staff to equip them with the skills to engage students in their learning. In the classroom, teachers use a range of evidence-based methods such as Rosenshine’s principles, dual coding and metacognition.
Teachers work closely with students and through their assessments can identify any underlying needs that they may have, and put strategies in place to support them, ensuring that they achieve excellent outcomes.
Student & Teaching

‘I look forward to going to the Wellbeing Hub each week. I am learning lots of skills such as cooking which will help me when I leave school’.

At Abbey Manor College, we have an extensive programme which plays a vital role in supporting our students’ wellbeing and personal development.
Through PSHE, students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to understand themselves, build positive relationships and make healthy, informed choices.
Expressive Arts provides them with creative outlets to explore emotions, develop self-expression and build resilience, while also fostering a strong sense of enjoyment and achievement.
Cooking lessons further enhance wellbeing by promoting independence, teamwork and practical life skills, as well as encouraging healthy eating habits.
In Personal Finance, students develop confidence in managing money, making informed choices and understanding future pathways, which reduces anxiety and builds independence.
Through Citizenship and the Tutor Time programme, students learn about rights, responsibilities and active participation in society, fostering a sense of belonging, fairness and respect.
Together, these areas help our students to develop confidence, emotional literacy and a strong sense of belonging, supporting their overall happiness and readiness to learn.
At Abbey Manor College, we provide our students with a wide range of experiences. After-school clubs including football, cooking, robotics, chess and art are on offer to all students.
We offer educational international residential trips for students so that they can be immersed in other cultures. These trips help students to develop independence, resilience and confidence.

At Manor College, strong pastoral support plays a vital role in helping students feel safe, valued, and confident at school. We provide them with consistent guidance, care, and encouragement, which support their emotional wellbeing, personal development, and resilience.
All students have a form tutor who delivers the pastoral curriculum to them and is the main point of contact between home and school. In addition, all students are assigned an assertive mentor who will discuss their academic progress with them and provide support for difficulties that they may be facing. We also have a school counsellor for students who require additional, more specialist support.

Student Devices: Every student has access to a laptop while at Abbey Manor College. This is to ensure they are able to fully engage in lessons and have resources available for research for lessons, homework and tutor time challenges. We also have a laptop loan scheme to support students with homework.
Student Voice: We believe that secure and happy students become successful learners. Our positive learning environment encourages strong engagement through interactive lessons, weekly competitions, and meaningful rewards. We listen to our students and use a variety of teaching methods to suit different learning styles, actively engaging and appropriately challenging each learner.
‘Pupils settle quickly at Abbey Manor, behave calmly and follow teachers’ instructions. They are respectful to adults’.
Ofsted ‘The teachers really care about us. There is always someone to help you if you need it’.
‘I feel more positive about learning now and I have more confidence in myself. I feel ready to move on to college when I finish Year 11’. Student

At Abbey Manor College, we prepare our students for their futures.
By providing a structured and highly personalised learning environment we help students to re-engage with their learning. Through smaller class sizes and strong relationships with trusted adults, students rebuild confidence, resilience and positive attitudes to learning. Targeted academic support helps address gaps in learning, while a strong focus on behaviour, emotional regulation and social skills enables students to re-engage with school expectations.
Close collaboration with families, mainstream schools and external professionals ensures that transitions are carefully planned, so students are well prepared academically, socially and emotionally for a successful reintegration or transition to the next phase of their education.
‘Leaders have high expectations of what pupils in Years 10 and 11 can achieve. They support pupils with their post-16 applications and they encourage them to aim high’.

Educational
This has helped them develop cultural awareness, curiosity and build a confidence and independence that allows them to see themselves as global citizens. Alongside our commitment to British values we continue to explore the Capital through ongoing visits to art galleries, museums and historical landmarks and sites.
All trips play a vital rile in supporting students’ social, emotional and behavioural development. Time away from familiar routines and surroundings encourages resilience, teamwork, self-regulation and personal responsibility.
Carefully planned activities promote reflection and emotional literacy; supporting students to reflect on their experiences, develop empathy and take responsibility for their actions. This leads to sustained improvements in engagement, wellbeing and readiness for learning.

Students are referred to Abbey Manor College for reasons such as:
Permanent exclusion from mainstream school 1.
Difficulties accessing a mainstream education 2.
Being identified as a young person who needs to undergo educational assessments in order to be placed in a setting that best meets their needs 3.
Being home educated for a period of time which makes it difficult to transition back into a larger educational setting 4.
Behaviour 5.
Being at risk of exclusion 6.
Having specific special educational or complex behaviour needs 7.

We primarily provide placements for students who are resident in the borough of Lewisham.
Those who attend have been permanently excluded alongside students attend for short-term placements, usually between 6 – 12 weeks. This type of placement is for young people who are at high risk if permanent exclusion from their school. During the placement, their needs will be assessed and support given which will allow for successful reintegration.
Students, particularly those in KS4, may attend for longer term intervention placements. This allows their needs to be assessed, and support given to ensure that they achieve the qualifications needed for successful transition to Further Education.
