The College’s Mission Statement

Welcome from the Principal

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Hockerill Anglo-European College — a vibrant community where students are at the heart of all we do.

Hockerill is a co-educational day and boarding school for students aged 11 to 18, offering a distinctive international education through the prestigious International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. Situated on a beautiful campus in Bishop’s Stortford, within easy reach of London, Cambridge and Stansted Airport, we welcome applications from students both locally and nationally, as well as internationally.

Our ethos is built on high aspirations, strong values, and a commitment to developing well-rounded young people. We expect students to strive for excellence in all areas — academic, sporting, creative, and personal. Supported by a rich co-curricular programme and a strong pastoral system, our students grow in confidence, resilience and character.

Hockerill’s global outlook is one of its greatest strengths. Our diverse community brings a wealth of perspectives, and our deep commitment to language learning and internationalism prepares students to become thoughtful, adaptable global citizens.

We are proud of our students’ outstanding academic outcomes and the many who progress to leading universities in the UK and abroad. But just as importantly, we are proud of the people they become — confident, respectful and ready to make a difference.

I am immensely proud to lead this exceptional school. I warmly encourage you to visit and see first-hand what makes Hockerill such a unique and inspiring place to learn and grow.

High Aspirations

Hockerill offers a truly distinct setting for a world-class education. Renowned for academic excellence and consistently among the UK’s most oversubscribed schools, we inspire students to fulfil their potential and pursue ambitious aspirations — not only academically, but also through their contribution to school life, the way they conduct themselves, and how they represent the College in sport, the arts, and wider community activities.

While academic achievement is central, our International Baccalaureate (IB) ethos prepares students to thrive as global citizens in a rapidly changing world. Our values-led education promotes intellectual confidence, adaptability, and intercultural fluency — qualities sought by leading universities and employers worldwide.

Communication lies at the heart of our curriculum. All students study two languages to GCSE level, broadening cultural horizons and enhancing employability skills. This international outlook empowers our students to progress confidently to the next stage of their education and careers.

Our academic outcomes speak for themselves. In 2024, 89% of students achieved five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including English and Maths. Our IB Diploma students achieved an average score of 34 points, well above the global average of 30.32.

Hockerill students are expected to undertake a seven-year programme of study, culminating in the IB Diploma, which opens doors to leading universities worldwide.

We offer expert, individualised careers and university support that opens pathways to top universities in the UK and overseas. Over the past five years, over 70% of students progressing to UK universities have secured places at Russell Group institutions.

High aspirations, strong values and excellent teaching ensure that Hockerill students leave with the qualifications, confidence and character to thrive – both in higher education and beyond. We are committed to ensuring that Hockerill is progressive, ambitious and dedicated to preparing students to contribute meaningfully to the world.

“The College’s results are significantly above global averages and each year students gain admission to leading universities around the world.”

Strong Community

Hockerill is a vibrant and welcoming community, often described as feeling “different” from other schools. Our students, staff, parents and visitors recognise the warmth and energy that permeate College life.

The College brings together local, regional, and international students within a close-knit and supportive environment. From the outset, every student joins a well-structured support system, led by an experienced Head of Year and Form Tutor, alongside a vertical house system built around our four Equipe groups: Bader Ginsberg, Mandela, Seacole and Turing. Students remain in their Equipe throughout their time at Hockerill, fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging. Inter-house competitions — from drama to debating, sports to weekly quizzes — build camaraderie and friendly rivalry, culminating in the awarding of the Vine Cup each year. A carefully planned transition programme ensures new students feel settled and supported. Boarders are further supported by dedicated House Tutors, helping them adapt quickly to boarding life.

Leadership is actively promoted. Students can apply for key positions of responsibility, serve on committees, or take on organisational roles that contribute to College life.

Year 7 students may be appointed as Form Captains and Sports Captains, offering an early opportunity to develop confidence and a sense of responsibility.

Progressive Curriculum

At Hockerill we offer a distinctive academic experience that combines academic rigour with an international outlook. In Years 7 to 9, students follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), a globally respected framework that fosters independent thinking, intercultural understanding, and a passion for lifelong learning.

Students benefit from sustained language study — all learn two modern foreign languages — alongside a rich, inquiry-led curriculum that promotes critical thinking and intellectual confidence. Some students also study Humanities in French or German, developing bilingual competence and deepening their cultural awareness.

The MYP culminates in a Community Project in Year 9, where students apply their learning to real-world challenges and reflect on their contribution to the wider world.

This strong foundation leads into the GCSE curriculum in Years 10 and 11, followed by the IB Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form — a globally recognised qualification that opens doors to top universities and international careers. Across each stage, students develop subject expertise, adaptability, and the skills to lead and collaborate in a changing world.

Through outstanding teaching, enrichment opportunities, and personalised guidance, Hockerill students are equipped not only to achieve excellent results but also to thrive beyond the classroom as articulate, confident, and globally minded individuals.

“A truly international school where languages are genuinely embedded in the curriculum.”

Traditional Values

At Hockerill, we believe that traditional values such as excellent manners, punctuality and appearance remain highly relevant in today’s world. These values help form the foundation of a respectful and focused learning environment where students can thrive.

We expect the highest standards of behaviour. Hockerill is a purposeful, happy community where students feel proud to belong. They wear their uniform with pride, support one another and celebrate each other’s achievements. Our students act as ambassadors for the College both nationally and internationally, known for their humility, integrity and sense of responsibility. While grounded in tradition, Hockerill is forwardthinking. Our values create a strong platform for innovation. Students explore different cultures and develop the mindset needed to lead in a global society. Leadership is encouraged, and students’ voices are valued in shaping College life. All students are expected to contribute positively to our community and take full advantage of our extensive co-curricular programme. These shared values — alongside our commitment to the IB’s mission — underpin our strong academic performance and international outlook.

International Outlook

International-mindedness is embedded in every aspect of College life. From our diverse student body to the curriculum, co-curricular opportunities, and global partnerships, we prepare students to engage confidently with the wider world. Our mission — Inspiring knowledgeable, enquiring and caring global citizens through excellence in education — underpins both the MYP and IB Diploma Programme.

Language learning is central to our ethos. All students study two additional languages to GCSE level. From Year 8 onwards, students benefit from a broad range of residential visits and exchange programmes, supported by long-standing partnerships with schools around the world. Exchange visits to Santiago, Liège, Potsdam and Tokyo offer rich opportunities for meaningful linguistic and cultural immersion.

Recent educational trips have taken students to India, Zimbabwe, Japan, China and Croatia, providing valuable firsthand experiences of diverse global cultures. Previous sports tours have included hockey and netball trips to South Africa, Hong Kong and Malaysia, and rugby tours to the USA and Canada — all of which have enriched students’ international outlook through competitive sport.

Global awareness is enriched through Model United Nations and the Student Diversity and Equality Committee, which actively promote understanding, respect, and inclusion within our diverse student community. As a UNESCO Associated School, Hockerill equips students with the skills, values, and global outlook needed to thrive in an interconnected world.

“Being part of the choir, the CCF and completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award has made my time at Hockerill so much more than just lessons—I’ve had so many opportunities to challenge myself and have fun. I love going to sports fixtures on the minibus with my team, especially when we win!”

Beyond the Classroom

At Hockerill, education goes far beyond the classroom. We offer a rich, year-round programme of co-curricular opportunities that challenge, inspire, and broaden our students’ horizons.

We offer an outstanding range of co-curricular opportunities, with students encouraged to explore and excel in a wide variety of activities — from sport, drama, and music to coding, environmental action, creative writing, debating, and cadets. Whether through performance, competition, teamwork or quiet discovery, every student is supported to find their niche — or try something new. If a passion hasn’t yet been found, Hockerill is the place to discover it.

We are a vibrant, energetic community where cocurricular life is not just encouraged but expected and celebrated. Engagement in activities helps students grow in confidence, curiosity, and resilience, shaping them into well-rounded individuals prepared for life beyond school.

Crucially, our co-curricular programme complements and enhances academic learning. Talents nurtured outside the classroom often evolve into lifelong interests, career paths, or defining experiences. From business enterprise to Model United Nations, from choirs to cricket clubs, students develop the leadership, teamwork, and communication skills essential for the modern world.

The value of a Hockerill education is measured not only in exam results but in the character of our students. They leave us as articulate, outward-looking, and socially aware young people — ready to contribute, lead, and thrive in an ever-changing world.
