But we do much more than provide courses. We provide that vital link between the school environment and the adult world of university and work. Our role is to help students make the transition from one world of learning to the next. We encourage them to think for themselves, take responsibility for their own learning and generally to become more independent. We aim to give students greater freedom within a structured environment – to make learning accessible and enjoyable by giving them full support.

We know you want to help the teenagers you care for make the very best choices. This prospectus is designed to help them, and you, work out the right way to go. Whatever their abilities or aspirations we can provide everything they need to progress in their chosen direction. If you look through the prospectus you will see that we provide a huge range of courses and choices – there really is something for everyone.

We recognise that this strong support network should continue in all areas of a student’s life and see you, very much, as a partner in this. If you have a son, daughter or any dependants under 18 you will be invited to attend their interview. Once they start their course you will receive regular progress reports and there are plenty of feedback evenings. We are also happy to arrange additional visits to discuss their progress or welfare if you feel it is necessary. If there is anything here you don’t understand or need further information about, don’t hesitate, contact us by ringing: 020 8257 4446 or just come to one of our Customer Service Points from Monday – Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm: East Ham Campus High Street South London E6 6ER Stratford Campus Welfare Road London E15 4HT

Remember, though, that more and more courses are offering you more and more options at the end – A Levels, for example, are a good way into university but so are a number of other courses!

A & AS Levels You can study for a wide range of A and AS Levels through our Young People’s Academy, run entirely for A Level students. The choice includes everything from Statistics to Urdu. You will need 5 GCSEs at grade A–C or qualifications of an equivalent standard if you want to do AS and A Levels – and, if you need to, you can also retake your science GCSEs with us. AS and A Levels are familiar to employers and educational establishments – they provide students with the entry standard qualifications that are required for university. In your first year you can take up to 4 subjects at AS Level. Then, in your second year, if your performance is satisfactory, you can move on to studying those subjects at A2 Level. You can also opt to study a combination of AS and A2 Levels in your second year.

10

www.newham.ac.uk

Full details of these courses are provided further on in this prospectus, and our exam results are not just good, they are excellent. If A Levels are not for you, but you still want to prepare for university or begin your future career we can help with a number of other courses that will help you. As well as offering you the opportunity to retake GCSEs or do our Access to A Levels Bridging course, we offer the Progression Diploma, unique and exclusive to Newham College.

Progression Qualifications Progression Qualifications are nationally recognised innovative courses, pioneered by Newham College and validated by the Open College Network. Currently there are over 8,000 students studying our Progression Qualifications. They are designed to develop your skills in a wide range of specialist subjects and also include communication, numeracy, problem solving, time management, IT and working with others. Assessment is mainly through coursework with some exams. Progression Qualification courses are popular because of their flexibility – if you’ve got qualifications then great, but if you haven’t – it doesn’t matter. The College will help you find a course that will improve your core skills so that you can either get a better job or gain the chance to study at a higher level. Also, if you have to take a break from study for work or personal purposes, you will still get credits for the work you have already done and you can pick up where you left off when you return. Progression Diploma Qualification courses help you gain confidence and motivation and increase your chances of success. The Progression Diploma programme links popular courses such as music and media courses with business skills development and core subjects like IT, numeracy and communication. These courses also enable students to explore career options in various industries ranging from Hair and Beauty to Multimedia. International R&B Star, Usher, was made Honorary First Ambassador of an exclusive programme especially developed as part of the progression qualification offering – and in his own words told students:

As part of this learning revolution, Newham College is offering 8 subject areas for the 14 – 19 Diplomas. Combining vital academic studies with valuable training within the workplace, these qualifications are designed for the new breed of students who need to compete in the changing and competitive world of work. What can I study? The 8 Diplomas cover the following subject areas: • Engineering • Construction & The Built Environment • Information Technology • Creative and Media • Society, Health and Development

“This is a great opportunity for young talent to blossom. I encourage you to take advantage of this course.”

• Hair and Beauty Studies

14 – 19 Diplomas

Diplomas are offered on 3 levels:

This is an exciting time for young people – as these Diplomas are set to transform the ways you can study before starting university or embarking on the world of work. The Diplomas will provide you with a wider range of choices than ever before. They have been designed to benefit learners, businesses and the wider economy.

• Level 1 Foundation Diploma equivalent to 5 GCSEs, grades D – G

• Hospitality • Business, Administration and Finance How many Levels?

• Level 2 Higher Diploma equivalent to 7 GCSEs, grades A*– C • Level 3 Advanced Diploma equivalent to 3.5 A Levels

Newham College of Further Education

What is different about the Diploma? The Diploma is just as academic as GCSEs and A Levels but also enables you to gain valuable experience of the workplace. This qualification gives every student the chance to gain essential employment skills that are important in a diverse range of industries. These skills include the use of ICT, problem solving and practical English and Mathematics for use at work. Industry leaders have been centrally involved in planning the structure and content of the Diploma and actively contribute to the delivery of courses. Diplomas also prepare students for University and provide flexible subject area options and career choices. You don’t just gain subject information but also learn how to use and develop the skills that help you study successfully. So, if your interests change, after successfully completing a Diploma in one subject you can change to another Diploma at a higher level in an unrelated subject.

What’s different about studying the Diploma at Newham College? We are making the Diploma an even more exciting and rewarding learning experience so at Newham College you have two additional extras: • On some Diplomas you will attend a residential or a special team event which will help to develop your teamwork skills. • Enterprise Skill – this is about helping you to learn how to be more business-like, creative and adaptable within changing environments. At Newham College we think that all our Diploma students need these skills to give them a competitive advantage so, even though they are included in some Diplomas already, we have included them in every Diploma. Each Diploma gives you the opportunity to choose from a range of experiences including: • Being involved in Enterprise Week • Setting up an Enterprise club • Building Enterprise Skills into some part of your course You might even get the chance to do all the above!

12

www.newham.ac.uk

How long does it take? Foundation and Higher Level Diplomas take 1 year to complete, after which you have the option to move on to the next level. Advanced Level Diplomas take 2 years to complete. What qualification will I get at the end of it? You will get the Foundation, Higher or Advanced Level Diploma depending on which level you start at. You can also gain other recognised qualifications on completion of your chosen Diploma. These qualifications include Functional Skills (Maths, English & ICT) and one other accreditation in another subject of your choice – for example, a student undertaking the advanced Diploma can choose to incorporate an AS Level into their course. Can I get a job or go to university with the Diploma? Employers are very involved in planning and helping us to deliver the Diploma, so the skills and knowledge you will gain are just what employers are looking for. The advanced Diploma is equivalent to 3.5 A Levels which you can use when you apply to university.

BTEC qualifications BTEC qualifications enable you to specialise in particular vocational areas such Business, ICT or Applied Science. BTEC courses are differentiated by various levels: • BTEC Firsts are Level 2 qualifications equivalent to traditional GCSE grades A*– C • BTEC Nationals are Level 3 qualifications which are equivalent to A Levels

Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQs) formerly known as National Vocation Qualifications (NVQs) You get VRQs when you can demonstrate the knowledge and skills required in an occupation such as Hairdressing, Beauty & Nails, Engineering, Sport or Business. Our training courses help you progress step by step through a series of assessments relating to various nationally recognised standards. As your skills build, you will collect units. When you have collected enough units you will qualify for the award of a full VRQ. There is no set length for a course – it is determined by your personal rate of progress. There are a number of different levels of VRQ: • Level 1 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D – G • Level 2 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A – C • Level 3 is equivalent to 2 A Levels or 2 vocational A Levels • Level 4/5 is equivalent to HNC, HND and Degree Level We offer a variety of VRQs including Engineering, Business, Hairdressing and Health & Social Care. We can find a work placement for you or, if you are already in a job, we can help you work through all the stages of your apprenticeship.

Entry Level Studies Don’t let language, literacy, numeracy or learning difficulties or disabilities become a barrier to your learning. We offer the opportunity for you to develop your skills so you can succeed on your chosen programme.

• BTEC National Awards are the same as one A level • BTEC National Certificates are equal to two A levels • BTEC National Diplomas are equal to three A levels All BTEC courses are designed for students with a keen interest in the professions that they want to pursue in the future.

They will give you all the guidance and assistance you will need to complete it with the necessary evidence from your work experience. Your Training Officer will ensure you meet the standards required to achieve your qualifications. 14

www.newham.ac.uk

Key Skills are essential for an apprentice to complete their Apprenticeship. You will study and be assessed at the College in subjects including literacy, numeracy and verbal communication. We Are Here To Listen

Young People’s Academy

You can discuss any academic, personal or social concerns you may have, with the experienced people in our confidential counselling service.

The Academy is the exciting, A Level centre at the Stratford Campus for aspiring students. This sixth form facility helps you enjoy the freedom of being at College within your own special community. Other courses are also available in addition to A Levels.

First Class Childcare It’s essential that your pre-school children have good childcare while you study – without this support it may be hard to concentrate on your course. We are one of the largest providers of nursery places in Newham – 135 places are available to our students across the borough, as well as at our East Ham Campus. Places are limited, so you must apply as soon as you have been accepted on a course.

The Stratford Campus boasts a world class IT and multimedia centre, an extensive library, modern science labs and professional music studios.

At our nurseries:

Student Life’s Enrichment Programme

• Your child’s place is subsidised, all you have to pay is £5 per day (if you receive benefits, if not, contact childcare administration) for full daycare, which includes meals and snacks. This is payable in advance on a weekly basis in the cash offices at East Ham or Stratford. This is an excellent subsidy as the Learner Support Fund will pay for the rest of your childcare place as long as you attend college every day. • We take children from 3 months old at all locations. • Your child is encouraged to learn as well as play. • You will receive regular reports on your child’s progress. • You can apply anytime. Newham College has also teamed up with nursery childcare provider Foundations for Learning to establish a new, high quality nursery in Newham. ‘The Early Years Nursery Academy’ provides subsidised childcare places for students and also offers a practical environment in which to teach and train new nursery staff. The facility also contains a child psychology research unit to help develop new ways of teaching children under the age of 5. Newham College of Further Education is now working with the East London Childcare Institute, they have 3 nurseries and a Children’s Centre available. Please contact: 020 8257 4423 to make enquiries.

You will find lots of ways to develop your talents and fulfil your creative potential at The Academy – the opportunities are endless if you get actively involved!

Student Life’s Enrichment Programme is a series of workshops where you can make friends outside your academic course, share ideas and discover new leisure activities. By attending these workshops you can learn exciting and extraordinary things like becoming a radio or TV broadcaster, taking up a new musical instrument, learning another language or even taking part in a cultural exchange. You can also just chill out and do relaxing things such as watching and talking about your favourite films, getting your head massaged, learning to sing, dance, or join other students for social activities like going to the theatre.

Fresher’s Fayre At Fresher’s Fayre you can find out about the many clubs and societies you can join – as well as how to start your own.

“I enjoy attending Newham College as there are a lot of deaf students and we meet up at break times. My friend is also doing the same course as me and we support each other with our work.” Rubina Begum, 18, Child Care Level 1 Student
