THE SIXTH FORM AT

A highly successful mixed Sixth Form in the heart of London.

Harris Academy Bermondsey is an outstanding school offering exceptional teaching and learning for its students leading to some of the highest state school results in the country.

HAB is a school of 900, which means we are able to really get to know each student individually, enabling us to provide exactly the right degree of challenge and support for each and every student. Our outstanding teachers and facilities ensure that every child receives first-class opportunities.

Since its foundation in September 2015, HAB6 provides young women and men the opportunity to achieve academic and leadership success. Our results are a testament to this vision, with 100% of students achieving university or employment places, and over 30% of students achieving Russell Group places, 20% above national average. At the heart of HAB6, our vision ensures that all students spend their time with us engaged in stimulating academic rigour, developing their leadership skills and preparing for future successes in whatever they choose for their post-19 pathways after HAB.

Scholarship – HAB6 students are curious learners who are eager to critique, challenge and test knowledge and application in all subjects. Students are well-supported to do just this; they are taught at HAB6 by highly experienced subject specialist teachers who are passionate about their subject and who know how to inspire students to achieve the highest grades. Many teachers at HAB6 are not only outstanding at teaching existing knowledge in their subject areas, they are also committed life-long learners and academics themselves, contributing to debate and knowledge within their chosen subjects, and respected in their fields for this.

This means HAB6 students are exposed to cuttingedge knowledge and understanding that will enable them to be ahead of peers who study elsewhere. Through discipline, hard work and perseverance, HAB6 students will enjoy the reward of success, and our staff will do everything they can to ensure this.

Subject Enrichment - Alongside the post-16 programme of study, all students participate in enrichment classes to further their understanding of their preferred subjects. Students complete independent research as part of their subject enrichment learning as well as attend Russell Group University seminars and lectures to further enhance their knowledge and understanding of a subject. Further pages in the prospectus outline student’s reflections on how valuable the enrichment opportunities are and how much they value them.

Student Leadership - At HAB6 we recognise that developing students’ ability to communicate and lead effectively is just as important as academic excellence. Through every student participating in a bespoke leadership pathway programme, they develop the necessary skills to leave HAB6 as confident young people ready to take on the challenges of the 21st Century.

Whatever your ambition, HAB6 is the place for you to gain those valuable qualifications, skills and connections to help keep doors open for future success.

We look forward to welcoming you in person.

Gizlé Landman, Principal

Student Leadership Programme

Sixth formers play a significant role in the wider school life equipping them with key leadership skills as well as soft skills highly valued by employers. The skills developed through the programmes listed on the next page are highly useful but are particularly essential if the student is considering a vocational career such as medicine, teaching, healthcare, social work, veterinary science or the police. Students can choose how they contribute to the wider school life in the following ways:

2

Peer Mentoring

As part of this programme, sixth form students mentor a secondary school student who they are matched up with via a personality quiz. The students will meet with their mentees on a weekly basis providing them with advice and academic support. All students who are interested in this strand will need to attend a day of training delivered by Kidscape.

Peer Senior Mentors

Peer senior mentors will be expected to develop their public speaking skills by delivering assemblies to secondary school students on topics such as how to revise effectively. In addition, peer senior mentors will develop their leadership through training their deputies to become peer senior mentors.

Members of the HAB Government

Sixth form students will lead secondary school students in meetings with the principal to discuss key matters arising in the school. They will be in charge of organising events such as fundraising as well supporting secondary school students to bring about change in an effective way.

Subject Mentoring

Sixth form students who are enthusiasts about their A-Level subject can help to revise key stage 4 content by providing subject mentoring to secondary school students.

Model United Nations

Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly where HAB6 students perform an ambassador role while debating topics such as gender equality, climate action, global health and more. HAB6 students have the opportunity of competing both nationally and internationally in live conferences in countries such as Scotland and Switzerland.
