Work hard Be kind Choose wisely

Welcome to Horninglow Primary

We are very proud of our welcoming and friendly school. We have a diverse and harmonious school community where our children feel happy and safe.

This was recognised by Ofsted in 2019: ‘the staff team has worked successfully to create a welcoming and happy school.’ We hope that you find the information in our prospectus useful. We want our children to develop a love of learning which will impact on their success, not only in their time with us, but throughout their lives.

The Trust values ‘Work hard, be kind, choose wisely’ are threaded through all that we do at Horninglow. Our school community aim to live our values which is why:

‘Pupils behave well in and around school. They are attentive in lessons and have positive attitudes to their learning.’

Vision and values

We are proud to share The de Ferrers Trust Vision:

At Horninglow Primary, our focus is not just on learning within and across subject areas, but also the personal development of all learners who attend our school. We strive to inspire all learners to go beyond what they consider possible for themselves, to experience and try new things and to realise all aspects of their potential. We wish to ignite a passion for learning that will remain with our pupils as they move on to their next phase of their learning journey and throughout their lives.

We are an inclusive school and aim to cater for all learners including those with special educational needs or disabilities as well as disadvantaged learners. Alongside this, we welcome children who are new to the UK and support them to successfully access the educational opportunities we offer.

‘ To ensure that all the children and young people in our care have the opportunity to fulfil their potential through achieving highly, regardless of their ability or background.’

The first steps

We are very proud of our safe, stimulating and welcoming Early Years Foundation Stage. Our team of experienced practitioners are expert at supporting children’s learning and development. The Early Years’ Curriculum is designed to include a balance of adult-led activities, alongside child-led learning opportunities.

We are proud of our purpose built Early Years environment where our outdoor area is an extension of our classrooms. We ensure that pupils have access to physical activities, such as using our climbing equipment and ride on toys, as well as the opportunity to practise writing, read books and use our small world resources. Indoors is bright, colourful and welcoming.

Children enjoy a wide range of activities including singing, dancing and craft activities alongside our early skills learning - phonics, reading and number skills.

We are pleased that Ofsted noted the great relationships in Early Years stating that ‘Adults provide high levels of care and attention, ensuring that individual needs are fully met. Warm and trusting relationships exist between staff and children’.

The curriculum

The curriculum programme at Horninglow is knowledge-based and encourages pupils to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of all the subjects incorporated in the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the Key Stage One (KS1) and Key Stage Two (KS2) National Curriculum.

Our curriculum is rich with facts that are progressively taught. We place an emphasis on developing the attributes our pupils need for future learning including resilience and perseverance. The strengths of our curriculum are that we identify and promote subjectspecific vocabulary in a talk-rich curriculum with themes that equip our pupils to build links and enhance their learning across other subjects.

We believe in providing experiences to support children’s learning and development, allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

‘The curriculum is exciting and engaging. Pupils enjoy the wide range of subjects taught.’

We provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including a choir and a variety of sports clubs.

We have a pupil and parent support worker on site who is on hand to help and support families when needed. If we can’t help ourselves, we are usually able to signpost to the service that can.
