WELCO Thank you for considering Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form, a unique new sixth form that opened in September 2018, established to provide an outstanding vocational education and preparation for skills-based work or transition to university for students in Croydon and the surrounding boroughs.


OME Part of the Harris Federation, Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form caters for students who may not suit the traditional pathways at post-16. With small class sizes and strong pastoral support, we offer excellent, focused vocational options as well as the opportunity to take or resit GCSEs that you need to progress further – whether you choose to progress into a career or higher education. Our academy offers a choice of Construction, Business or Media for students choosing a vocational pathway, and a curriculum that will challenge and inspire you to develop the skills and confidence you need to compete successfully for jobs in your chosen vocation. Croydon, like much of London and the South East, is undergoing a huge programme of construction and regeneration with the potential to benefit the area for generations to come. With a focus on hard skills and employability, Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form will help you develop the skills you need to be who you want to be – and be part of that success. HPS6F School Day

The school day commences at 9.20am and finishes at 4.00pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with a 3.15pm finish on Monday and Friday. Lessons are an hour long incorporating a 15 minute morning break and a half hour break for Lunch.

Enrichment

All sixth form students participate in 2 hours of Enrichment a week. These are non-examinable subjects that are designed to broaden horizons and give greater breadth to your experience when completing a CV or application to higher education. We provide an exciting, high-quality and wide ranging programme of sports and activities helping you to develop your interests, support your wellbeing and offer opportunities for skills development. Our programme covers a number of areas including: • Sports • Leadership Programme • Creative Arts • Design & Technology • Construction skills • Music • Programming and coding • Understanding our World • Work experience • Numeracy and Literacy • Community Outreach • Duke of Edinburgh Award


How we support you

One of the key strengths at HPS6F is the great importance that we place on providing high quality support and guidance to help you through your studies. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will help you to settle in to life in the 6th Form and also to make the most of the opportunities available to you. They will meet with you on a regular basis to discuss your progress and to help you adjust to studying at this new level and advise how to maximise your performance. Further pastoral help and support is available on a personal basis from our Inclusion team offering a counselling service and access to a life coach if needed.

Skills For Work and Life

Skills for Work and Life is a bespoke programme of study that is delivered to all students at HPS6F providing a wide ranging toolkit to enable students to learn and develop the skills, both hard and soft, to be successful in looking for employment or moving on to another level of education. The programme is delivered through assemblies and small group workshops covering: • Careers guidance • Applications for work or Higher education • Self-confidence building • Financial Planning • Work experience • Interview techniques • Literacy and Numeracy skills


3 PATHWA Courses we offer We have designed a 6th form curriculum that can be tailored to meet your individual needs and abilities. There are three pathways on offer to suit your career aspirations and give you the best chance of academic success and employment opportunities.

Once you have chosen your desired pathway, you should complete the online application as soon as possible. The online form can be found on the website: www.harrisps6f.org.uk/application Popular courses tend to become oversubscribed very quickly so a prompt application will help to prevent disappointment. Applications before the Christmas holidays are ideal. Applications after this will be considered, with a waiting list formed if appropriate. We look forward to receiving your application. AYS

1: Construction Duration: 2 years

City & Guilds is the leading provider for construction training and courses in the UK and one of the few brands known throughout the rest of the world. Harris Professional Skills offer qualifications in construction at entry level through to Level 3. Students taking these courses will be enabled to pursue a career in the construction Industry after two years and if successful at achieving a level 3, could pursue a variety of construction based qualifications at University. Students have an induction period covering the wide range of specialisms we have on offer and will then be able to choose one of the following to qualify in: • Bricklaying • Plastering • Painting/Decorating

• Plumbing • Joinery

Entry Requirements You do not require any formal qualifications to enter on this pathway but will be required to sit GCSE Maths and/or English in addition if you have not yet achieved a grade 4 or above.


2: CTECH Level 3 Duration: 2 years

The Cambridge Technicals (CTECH) are vocational qualifications offered by Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR) in the United Kingdom, known as CTECH. The CTECH suite ensures that students have the right qualifications to support their lifelong learning journey. They are vocational qualifications at Level 2 and Level 3 for students aged 16+. They’re designed with the workplace in mind and provide a high-quality alternative to A Levels, with a great range of subjects to choose from. HPS6F offer: CTECH: Health and Social Care Health & Social Care provides students with an interest in any of the caring professions with an invaluable and thoughtful perspective on contemporary issues in health and social care. Students are taught the essential skills needed for anyone wishing to work in any kind of people orientated career in the future and considering professions such as nursing, teaching, childcare, social work, policing and counselling. CTECH: Media This qualification offers understanding by empowering students to work with media products, production processes and technologies. This leads to practical and creative skills that transfer into the workplace. Unit choices cover a range of media including print, web, radio, television, film, animation and gaming. CTECH: Business Business is the heart of the economy, encouraging innovation and creating wealth. Cambridge Technicals offers students the opportunity to explore the world of business with over 35 units across two levels. This course was created in collaboration with leading businesses and the qualifications explore all aspects of the business world including practical activities – ideal for a wide range of learning styles.


CTECH Applied Science Applied Science provides students with the knowledge and understanding to perform laboratory techniques required for research and analytical techniques in the development of products used in environmental, food or human science. Students collect experimental data, analyse, evaluate and present primary data. They undertake a ‘Scientific Research Project’ which will bring together all the knowledge and understanding gained in the theoretical units. The Applied Science course is suitable for students who have an interest in scientific and medical research as well as teaching or technical based work.

Entry Requirements Students taking a CTECH pathway will need at least 4 subjects at Grade 4 or above (or equivalent). You will be required to sit GCSE Maths and/or English in addition if you have not yet achieved a grade 4 or above.

3: GCSE pathway Duration: 1 year

HPS6F offer a GCSE (or equivalent) pathway for students wishing to resit their GCSEs or have not yet had the opportunity to sit them. Students take an English Baccalaureate based curriculum for one year. Students who have already achieved a grade 4 or above in any of these subjects can be allocated additional support in other lessons or study time sessions dependent upon need. The subjects on offer are: • English • English Literature • Mathematics • Science • Geography • History
