Cleveland Zoological Society 2023 Annual Report

Dear Friends —

Thank you for another wonderful year of raising philanthropic support for our Zoo.

Our membership program remains the largest in Northeast Ohio. Annual donors to The Pride program are increasing, and new projects continue to better the lives of animals and guests. It truly brings us joy to lead this organization and work with you all!

We talk often about how when we donate to support the Zoo, we are helping the animals but also improving the experience for 1.3 million people who visit each year and amplifying the work of conservationists around the world. This connection of animals, people and the planet is important.

Susie’s Bear Hollow is a beautiful example of this. This habitat opened in August and replaced spaces that were among the oldest at the Zoo. The living area for bears and working area for their keepers were outdated and provided none of the features of modern husbandry work. Completely renovating the indoor spaces in addition to designing the new outdoor spaces is a benefit for all! The climbing structure for kids is surrounded by messages and images of the Andean Bear Conservation Alliance. So as people in Cleveland watch their children climb like an Andean bear, they can read how the Zoo is helping the species here and in South America.

We also got to see this connectivity first-hand on a trip to Rwanda in September. Leaders from the Zoo Society, Zoo and Metroparks visited the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and experienced a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park. We met students who have worked with the Zoo team, and we walked the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Interpretative Trail at the campus. It was a very powerful reminder that our advocacy and our donations are helping people, animals and our natural world.

With your help we will continue this work in 2024 and beyond – thank you for all you do!

MEMBERSHIP MAKES A DIFFERENCE $5M

For the fourth year in a row, membership broke its own record. With over 44,000 member households, it is evident that membership represents great value to the Northeast Ohio community. Membership revenue topped $5 million for the first time, with 70% of that revenue supporting Zoo operations and conservation efforts. Members had the opportunity to watch new additions to the Zoo grow and flourish –tiger cubs and baby gorillas to name a couple – and enjoyed acclaimed offerings such as Asian Lantern Festival, Wild Winter Lights, Summer Camp, and more.

With PNC’s continued, generous support, Member Appreciation Days were a huge hit, drawing large crowds on giveaway days.

The Zoo Society published 28 ZooNews emails and four issues of Z Magazine for members in 2023. This content connects members more closely to the Zoo’s efforts in animal care, conservation, and education.

With 10% of all membership revenue directly supporting conservation, members helped the Zoo Society give over $500,000 to secure a future for wildlife in 2023.

EXTRAORDINARY EVENTS

Signature events bring together Zoo Society donors and friends for unforgettable experiences, inviting guests to explore the Zoo in new ways, share its unique offerings with friends and family, and build community and philanthropic support along the way. Private Sunset Safari dinners have become a favorite among donors, lending them the Zoo as a backdrop for a memorable evening with their invited guests. These dinners generated $148,000 in philanthropic revenue in 2023.

Special donor opportunities included September’s Planned Giving Breakfast presented by PNC. Guest speakers from

Hawthorn, Barnes Wendling, Calfee, Halter and Griswold LLP, and PNC Private Bank discussed how planned gifts ensure that the Zoo and the community it serves continue to thrive for generations to come.

Tails + Cocktails once again drew large audiences to engage more deeply in the Zoo’s dedicated efforts to advance animal care and conservation. The 2023 series included exclusive insights into the Zoo’s approach to storytelling, its design process for Susie’s Bear Hollow, and its role in supporting population sustainability for key species across North American zoos.

A cocktail party in June hosted by the Zoo Society Board of Directors welcomed donors to preview the construction site of Susie’s Bear Hollow. Guests nibbled on heavy appetizers, sipped bear-themed cocktails and mingled with the architect and design team while viewing the spaces under construction in Wilderness Trek.

And of course, Twilight at the Zoo presented by KeyBank drew a sold-out crowd for an evening of rock music and revelry. This event remains a cornerstone of revenue and visibility for the Zoo Society as it approaches its 30th year, and it has become a beloved summer tradition for thousands of Northeast Ohioans.

UPGRADED SPACES FOR ANIMALS AND HUMANS ALIKE

SUSIE’S BEAR HOLLOW

Susie’s Bear Hollow opened on August 25, replacing some of the oldest habitats at the Zoo with spaces that are triple the previous size and thoughtfully designed to support the health and welfare of the bears that call them home. Highlights include dig pits that encourage sloth bears to hunt for insects, “wobble trees” that allow Andean bears to shake food out

of trees as they would in the wild, and imaginative climbing structures to support these bears’ arboreal nature.

Zoo visitors can now observe the bears in new ways as they explore all that the habitats have to offer, and the bears have more opportunity than ever to just be bears. Humans were not left out of the fun, either. A nature-inspired play

space is the first in Wilderness Trek and lets kids climb like the bears do. While kids play, their caregivers can learn about the Zoo’s Andean Bear Conservation Alliance via eye-catching interpretive signage and linked video. This transformation was made possible in part by the Zoo Society’s contribution of $3.5 million, including a naming level gift from a longtime donor.

“New habitats advance animal care and husbandry goals, celebrate conservation work and our partners in the field, and provide unique play spaces and educational messaging. This brings us joy and reminds us that new spaces are a visible example of all of the work that goes on behind the scenes here every day and makes our zoo one of the best in the nation.”

THE JACK JOSEPH AND MORTON MANDEL AUDITORIUM

The Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Auditorium was completed in March 2023 and became an immediate asset for events, meetings, and programs. The polished, welcoming space is equipped with tech capabilities to make events turnkey and is already driving additional rental revenue.

The project also included two new conference rooms equipped with the latest technology, a patio space that is used for private events, and a new guest lobby and welcome area that features original Andy Warhol screenprints

from his Endangered Species series. These priceless paintings were donated to Cleveland Metroparks more than 30 years ago and are now featured in the new entryway accompanied by educational messaging about each animal.

Pollinator gardens surrounding the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Auditorium were also completed in 2023 and serve as a beautiful reminder of the importance of wild habitat connectivity.

Meetings hosted in Mandel Auditorium and Conference room in 2023/2024. This includes outside organizations, the Zoo Society staff and Board of Directors, and many, many lunches and meetings with donors and friends of the Zoo.

DONORS DRIVE PROGRESS

Growth in donations to The Pride demonstrated promise in cultivating interest and support among our loyal annual donors. These donors provide critical operational support for the Zoo Society, which allows the organization to grow and thrive all with the mission of raising philanthropic funding for the Zoo. The Pride garnered $546,000 in 2023 – an increase of almost $95,000 from 2022 –and members enjoyed morning

walks, special tours, and other perks. The four Pride Walks offered in 2023 were so wellloved that there will be ten of these opportunities in 2024.

Funds raised by the Zoo Society have meaningful impact both across the globe and close to home. With over $645,000 sent to conservation partners in 2023, donors like you strengthened the Zoo’s efforts to secure a future for wildlife in more than

Here in Northeast Ohio, the Zoo reached almost 85,000 people from 34 Ohio counties with its educational programs or discounted education rates. Over 23,000 participants received scholarships, and 556 programs were provided for free because of donations to the Zoo Society. The Zoo’s Department of Education & Engagement continues to respond to the community’s expressed needs and interests, and is currently piloting a workforce development program and a civic action initiative.

A generous donation from STERIS outfitted the Sarah Allison Steffee Center for Zoological Medicine with a new surgical table, endoscopy tools, and surgical lights for the small animal treatment room, large animal treatment room, and necropsy. These valuable items represent a needed upgrade that sets the veterinary team up for success in routine and emergent procedures.

A refreshed “adopt an animal” program, now named Support a Species, garnered excitement and support thanks in part to new, exclusive plush animals from Wild Republic and enamel pins from Peppermint Narwhal. Donations saw a sharp increase following the addition of these items and the program raised over $10,000 for animal care and operations in 2023.

LEADING THE WAY

The Board of Directors welcomed eight new members in 2023, and Sally Messinger became a Director Emeriti. Sally served on the Zoo Society Board for 12 years, and she and her husband Don remain strong advocates and donors. The Don and Sally Messinger Nature Innovation Station, a home for ambassador animals, opened in late 2022 and was a popular place for guests to view new species in 2023.

The Zoo Society Board and staff worked through the year to develop new committees in support of government advocacy and the Primate Forest fundraising campaign, and focused on Board governance including an update of the organization’s bylaws and annual expectations.

Leaders of the Cleveland Zoo Society, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Cleveland Metroparks traveled to Rwanda in October to visit the new campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. The group met interns and students whose education was supported by Zoo and Zoo Society funding, walked the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Interpretative Trails, had a behindthe-scenes tour of the educational spaces on campus and did a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park. The Zoo has partnered with Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund for more than 25 years, and Zoo Society donors have provided generous support of their education programs and operations through the years.
