The Clermont County Fairgrounds in Owensville will be filled to capacity the weekend of Sept.

29, 30 and Oct. 1 with classic automobile enthusiasts, their families, and vintage cars and trucks for the region’s premier car show.

The Pumpkin Run Nationals, the largest car show in southwest Ohio, has drawn as many as 4,000 vintage automobiles from the local area, the region, and from as far away as Florida, Colorado, and Canada.

The Pumpkin Run Nationals, now in its 42nd year, is the signature event of the Fastiques Rod and Custom car club, based in Owensville. But while the Pumpkin Run Nationals is the region’s largest car show, it is also a family-friendly event, with something for every member of the family.

On Friday, the show car gate opens at 6:30 a.m. and the show closes at midnight. Some of Friday’s activities will include a dance and costume contest (age 0-12) from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m.. Local D.J. favorite, J.D. Hughes will be spinning vinyl live from 7 - 11 p.m.

On Saturday the show car gate opens at 8 a.m. and the show closes at midnight. Saturday’s activities will include children’s and adult games at noon, and a bean dinner for registered entries.

There will be live music from Slow Burn featuring Bobby Lewis from 7 - 11 p.m.

The show car gate opens at 8 a.m. Sunday with the trophies and give-away car being awarded at 3 p.m. At 9 a.m. Sunday a model car contest will be held. Then at 10 a.m. will be church services with The ‘Original’ Family Tradition and Pastor Bill Frenzer ministering in the B. Gibbons Show Arena.

Admission to the Pumpkin Run Nationals is also family friendly, with adult tickets only $8 and children 12 and under are free.

Fastiques makes donations to three organizations

Fastiques Rod & Custom Car Club held their annual Christmas Party on December 3, 2016. This volunteer appreciation dinner is for those that help make the Pumpkin Run possible and present yearly donations to our charities.

Our 2016 Pumpkin Run participants helped the Fastiques be able to donate $50,000.00 to the Shriners Hospital for Children and $4000.00 each to the Earth Angel Foundation and the Hillbilly Clan.

• Because of space limitations, no trailers or campers are permitted. We regret these restrictions, but in the interest of allowing more cars to participate in the limited space, we must insist.

• All trailered cars must be off trailers before entering the fairgrounds.

• No show cars permitted on the grounds until 6:30 a.m. Friday morning except those belonging to Fastiques members and registred volunteers.

• No pop-up tents may be set up until 6:30 a.m. Friday morning.

• Golf carts or scooters for persons with a handicap, must register at Locust Street gate and present proof of liability insurance.

• No motorcycles, bicycles or scooters are permitted on the fairgrounds during the event for any reason.

Classic cars: Legos for adults

In other words, the classic car scene in Ohio is “good,” Coutant said.

There is, however, much debate about what makes a “classic car” a classic car, he said.

“In general, a classic car is any car that is over 25-years-old. I think that most classic cars have something that stands out (styling, performance, rarity) because they are the ones that get “saved,” Coutant said. “So you see a lot of sports cars, muscle cars, and stylish cars (e.g. the ‘50s for American cars). However I have seen people with their cherished classic car that was just an ordinary car when it was new but it

“I was looking to do a restoration project and after some research, decided to focus on TR2-TR4 as a candidate. For any restoration or activity with a classic car, the best resources in the world are the marquee clubs,” Coutant said. “If you want to restore a ’65 Mustang, there is a club, local and

(MG, Triumph, Austin Healey, Jaguar) but there are active clubs for Italian cars (Alfa, Ferrari , Fiat), German (Porsche), as well as other makes and a growing interest in classic Japanese cars.”

In fact, Coutant said there are a number of smaller foreign classic car events each year, usually focused on one particular marquee while the big events (in attendance) are the British Car Days in Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus.

However, Pumpkin Run is definitely one of the bigger ones for classic car enthusiasts.

And it isn’t just about the cars; it’s also about reconnecting.

Coutant said, as the regional, multi-day event is one many owners look forward to in order to meet old friends and make new ones.

Coutant said what gets him “revved up” about cars – the most passionate – is how unique they are combined with their accessibility.

“I love to work with my hands and these cars are like giant Legos for adults in that you can take them apart and put them back together with simple tools,” he said. “Classic cars always provide a conversation starter. I don’t know how many people I have met that owned or knew someone who had a car like I restored.”

Something people may be surprised to know within the classic car community is its diversity and how communityoriented it actually is.

“There is a diverse representation of men and women in the classic car community that always seem to find ways to give back to the community through support of many different charities,” Coutant said.

Meet a local hot rod pinstriping and hand lettering legend

BY MEGAN ALLEY In a world filled with automation, local hand lettering and sign painting expert Dan Shaw is a rare breed.

Shaw, 67, has been running his shop, Shaw Signs, out of his home on the western side of Clermont County for more than 30 years.

He specializes in pinstriping, which he does by hand, with a brush.

“We don’t do any tape striping at all,” he noted.

Shaw mainly does truck and trailer lettering; a typical job takes him about three hours.

“Vehicles definitely; trucks, trailers, race cars and street rods; stuff like that,” he said, adding, “Oddly enough, I do very few signs.”

Shaw, who is self-taught, started painting back when he was a student at Milford High School.

“I was always the kid that drew hotrods, I was a pretty good artist, and hotrods led me to lettering on race cars, and race cars led to trucks, and when I started on trucks, the light bulb went off and I thought, this beats the heck out of working,” he said.

“So, here I am 50 years later lettering trucks and trailers,

and still enjoy it. It’s still fun.”

Now, Shaw travels all over the tri-state area for jobs.

“I’ve just always been a car guy, always, and honestly the work that I do gets me into some very cool places,” he said. “There are huge, very cool car collections all around Cincinnati that people will never see – private collections. It’s amazing what’s around.”

He added, “I get to see some cool stuff, no doubt. And that fires you up.”

When asked to describe his painting style, Shaw responded, “Boy, that’s a hard one to explain.”

He added, “Pinstripping is like handwriting; it’s all different.

There’s no fonts, you just make it up as you go.”

Shaw has worked on a number of unique jobs, including “big, old locomotives” and carriages.

Some of the most distinctive things he’s been asked to paint are early 1900s steam tractors and private airplanes, and some of the most unique things he’s been asked to write “can’t be printed in the newspaper,” Shaw quipped.

After more than three decades in the business, Shaw still draws inspiration from reading books and magazines on hot rodding.

This year’s Pumpkin Run Nationals marks the first time in more than 25 years that Dan Shaw’s old fashioned gas station display won’t be set up at the car show.

Fairground officials torn down the building Shaw had used for the display to build the new Holman Livestock Complex, which officially opened during the 2017 Clermont County Fair. “[The new building] is great, I’m happy for them, but it doesn’t look like there’s any place to put that display up, so I would say it’s the end of an era,” Shaw said. “It’s gone. We didn’t even know it was going to be gone … that’s just how it went down.”

The display was adored with antique gas pumps and signs that Shaw has been collecting for the past 35 years.

Upon reflection, Shaw thanked his friends who helped haul the gas pumps and signs to the building each year.

“If they didn’t help me, it never would have happened, because they’re incredibly heavy; we’re talking big 1920s gas pumps that weigh about 500 to 600 pounds each,” he said. “It was a job, but that’s all gone.”

Looking ahead, Shaw has mixed feeling about the forced transition.

“I’m a little disappointed, but it ended on a good note,” he said. “We had a good time and gained a lot of [recognition] out of it, so what the heck.”

“You see a design you like and you kind of change it and make it your own,” he said. “You don’t really copy guys; that’d be cheating, and we don’t want to do that.”

When it comes to advertising, Shaw keeps that old school too. He relies on referrals.

“I’m very fortunate to have been in business over 30 years and never been in the phone book or advertised,” he said. “It’s all word of mouth and business cards.”

He added, “When people call me, they’re ready to paint. They’re not shopping price, they want it done, which is good.”

Shaw, who proclaims to love what he does, says he “got very lucky in life.”

TRUCK LETTERING

“If it wasn’t for keeping a schedule, I couldn’t tell you what day it is; every day is Saturday,” he said. “I get to do neat stuff, and it’s fun, and I make a living at it.”

And, he doesn’t plan on giving up his career anytime soon.

“As long as the phone rings, I’ll get out there,” he said. “I may be a drooler, but I’ll come stripe your car.”

A half-century of classic car enthusiasm

Rick Drewry has been a classic car enthusiast, collector, restorer, teacher, regular Pumpkin Run attendee and hobbyist for most of his life. In fact, on the day he interviewed with The Sun, he was celebrating his 50^th birthday.

“I started off working in my dad’s shop when I was 14 and never stopped,” Drewry said.

Drewry, who grew up and lives in Brown County, was in Carlisle, Pennsylvania the day of his birthday for Corvettes at Carlisle, which brings 5,000 Corvettes to one place for an annual event. Working with American Modern Insurance Group as aCollector Car and Motorcycle Sr. Specialist , Drewry travels around for car events and shows like that one.

In other words, Drewry has managed to parlay his passionate enthusiasm and hobby for classic cars into a job that revolves around it.

“Everything I do involves cars,” he said.

He’s trying to teach and train the next generation through AMIG to keep the hobby alive and humming.

“A lot of guys are like their dads,” Drewry said. “It was inevitable that I’d follow in his footsteps. You see a lot of kids getting into it, which I’m happy to see.”

Drewry’s dad is 75-years-old and still plays around with his Hot Rod; it’s a passion that never fades away.

The three things classic cars have that modern, computer-souped-up cars of today just don’t have: attitude, style and performance.

“Cars today are jelly beans,” Drewry said.

Another aspect of the classic car that makes it appealing is its customizability – it can be restored and modified and done so right in the driveway of your own home.

Nowadays, with the computerization of cars, people not only view them differently – as convenience with cup holders, like an appliance, Drewry said – but also outsource maintenance to maintenance men and companies.

“You can build it yourself and make it your own. I don’t care who you are, you can learn this stuff,” Drewry said. “You can’t modify them today. They come out of the box for you.”

It’s that sort of emotional and artistic investment in car that nurtures the nostalgia for classic cars. An especially appealing aspect is to modify a classic car with the trappings of a modern vehicle: air conditioned more horsepower and the like so it has the style of the old mingled with the handle and feel of a new one.

In other words, for classic car enthusiasts, it’s not always about restoring or collecting classic cars merely to sit inside a garage on a pedestal for show: it’s also about being able to drive them and feel the nostalgia in a much more visceral way.

Some classic cars are just meant to go rogue from the purist mindset and have the rules taken off, Drewry said.

He has no problem modifying the “hell out of a car,” he said.

There is also an artistic flavor to restoring a classic car.

“You’re creating your own flavor, but you want other people to look at it,” Drewry said. “You’re creating a rolling art masterpiece. Not everybody’s the same…all of them are cool.”

Everybody is putting some different twist on the car.

Drewry said car guys just love and respect style; it’s not about competition, but the love of the game and craftsmanship.

“I think I’m worse now than I’ve ever been,” he said,

about his enthusiasm over the years.

The favorites among enthusiasts tend to be from the 1950s and 1960s, but Drewry in particular is partial to the Pontiacs, Fords and Chevys.

“I’m a big Pontiac guy,” he said. “That’s my passion and what I spend my most time with.”

Cars in that era were big and bold and not afraid to stand out with big tailfins and 300 pound chrome bumpers. You’d never see that today on a modern car, Drewry said.

“You just can’t match that style,” he said.

And at the end of the day, classic car enthusiasm is nothing without the community.

“The community hasn’t changed: it’s a very familyoriented community,” Drewry said. “It’s like everybody from the 1950s showed up for a picnic.”

There’s a lot of camaraderie you don’t see in other hobbies, he said.

“The big takeaway is pushing the hobby to keep going,” Drewry said. “There’s very few things in the United States like this.”

As for Drewry’s “bucket list” car...Well, there’s over 100, many of which he’s gotten to over the years. One in particular would be the Smokey and the Bandit 1977/1978 Trans Am. “Just like the movie,” he said.

Exploring

the classic/historical car hobby

Car enthusiasts appeared as soon as the automobile was introduced to the general public in the 18th and 19th centuries. Through the years, certain vehicles have proven more desirable to customers than others based on their looks and other attributes.

Auto hobbyists devote substantial time and effort to purchasing, restoring and displaying classic cars. While the hobby of restoring classic cars is not necessarily for everyone, its popularity suggests it’s an activity that’s here to stay.

According to an article in The Economist, in the wake of the recent recession, investors were increasingly pulling their money out of stocks and converting assets into tangible items, such as classic cars. As late as 2013, collector cars were outperforming other tangible investments like art, wine, stamps, and coins by large margins.

Those ready to dip their toes in the classic car waters should understand a few key factors that can affect how much they enjoy this potentially rewarding hobby.

• Environmental regulations. Some collectors face challenges when attempting to restore classic vehicles because the cars do not meet today’s stringent clean air initiatives that govern automobiles. With the increasing number of new, clean cars on the road, vehi-

• Introduction of alternative fuels. As governments increasingly emphasize the importance of clean fuel options, classic car owners may find it challenging to find more traditional fuels or face the added expense of adapting their vehicles to run on alternative fuels.

• Lack of mechanical expertise.

Workers in the automotive trade are trained to manufacture and repair new vehicles.

As a result, classic car owners without much mechanical ability of their own may find it difficult to find mechanics with the skills necessary to repair and restore classic cars.

• Historic requirements should be heeded. Each state has its own requirements governing classic cars. To qualify for historic vehicle registration, vehicles may need to be 25 years or older, owned solely as a collector’s item and used exclusively for exhibition and educational purposes. When driven for personal use, such vehicles may not be allowed to exceed 1,000 miles per year.

Classic cars continue to attract hobbyists from all over the globe. Restoring classic cars can be a rewarding pastime, but one that involves dedication and an investment of both time and money.

Vehicle/aircraft hybrid is poised to reach new heights It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's a flying car! Move over hot rods and luxury sport utility vehicles. The new must-have auto may soon be the one that can take flight.

At the end of the film "Back to the Future," Doc returns to Marty's home to warn him that something happens to Marty's kids in the future. They enter the suped-up Delorean, and Marty says, "Doc, you better back up. We don't have enough road to get up to 88." Doc replies, "Roads? Where we're going we don't need any roads."

The car then hovers off the ground and blasts into the sky.

People have long dreamed about a car that can transition into flight. It may cut down on commuting times or alleviate traffic jams. And let's face it, a flying car might be pretty fun to operate. Now those dreams are getting closer to reality.

The production prototype of the Transition(R) StreetLegal Airplane completed its successful first flight at Plattsburgh International Airport in Plattsburgh, NY on March 23, 2012. The same vehicle has also successfully conducted initial drive and conversion testing, demonstrating the Transition's capability to provide unmatched freedom, flexibility and fun in personal aviation.

Developed by Terrafugia, Inc., a growing aerospace company founded by pilots and engineers from MIT and supported by a world-class network of advisors and private investors, the Transition is a two-seat personal aircraft capable of driving on roads and highways, parking in a single car garage, and flying with unleaded automotive fuel. The prototype was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April 2012. At a price tag of $279,000, it's unlikely the skies will be crowded with them anytime soon, but the arrival of a car/plane hybrid shows promise for future travel.

The Transition can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of automotive fuel and burns five gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.

"The successful first flight of this Production Prototype Transition(R) marks a critical move toward initial production and first delivery," said Terrafugia COO Anna Mracek Dietrich. The company will continue its testing program in preparation for first delivery, which includes meeting stringent automotive crash tests to meet federal standards. The aircraft is expected to be sold within the next year.

The Transition's first flight reached an altitude of 1,400 feet above the ground and lasted eight minutes while staying in the vicinity of Plattsburgh International Airport. Six phases of flight testing are planned to continue

development and demonstrate compliance to the Light Sport Aircraft standards.

The government has already allowed the use of special tires and glass on the craft that are lighter than normal automotive tires to make it easier for the vehicle to fly.

It can travel 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition.

Exploring

the future of connected cars

Fans of the “Back to the Future” movie franchise may be disappointed that the film’s prediction that flying vehicles would be commonplace in the 21st century has not yet come to fruition. However, the modern-day automobile is a remarkably far cry from cars and trucks built as recently as 10 years ago.

Connected cars have become incredibly popular as interest in digital content continues to rise. A connected vehicle is one that is equipped with Internet access and typically a wireless local area network. Connected cars can be viewed as a smartphone on wheels. They perform many of the capabilities of other mobile devices, with the vehicle serving as the media hub.

General Motors was one of the first manufacturers to produce connected cars. In 1996, their premium brands Cadillac DeVille, Seville and Eldorado featured a technology called OnStar.

The primary purpose of OnStar was to get emergency service to a vehicle quickly in the event of an accident. The technology started with only voice, but when cellular systems added data, the system was able to send the GPS location to the call center. OnStar was eventually used for more than just emergency calls, ultimately expanding to perform remote vehicle diagnostics, and then to provide directions and more user-interactive features.

Other manufacturers soon followed suit, and data and voice features became popular add-ons for vehicles. Today’s connected cars are equipped with features such as in-car entertainment units.

Via their dashboards, drivers can use touch

screens to access apps on their smartphones and answer phone calls. Navigation, roadside assistance, voice commands, contextual help/offers, parking apps, engine controls, and car diagnostics also can be accessed via many touchscreens.

While entertainment and safety have led the way with connected cars thus far, the future of connectivity seems to be autonomous vehicles. In the notso distant future, vehicles may be much more hands-off for drivers. Driving may even become a thing of the past. The race has
